Quantum communication schemes widely use dielectric four-port devices as basic elements for constructing optical quantum channels. Since for causality reasons the permittivity is necessarily a complex function of frequency, dielectrics are typical examples of noisy quantum channels in which quantum coherence will not be preserved. Basing on quantization of the phenomenological electrodynamics, we construct the transformation relating the output quantum state to the input quantum state without placing frequency restrictions. Knowledge of the full transformed quantum state enables us to compute the entanglement contained in the output quantum state. We apply the formalism to some typical examples in quantum communication.
We consider two dielectric membranes suspended inside a Fabry-Perot-cavity, which are cooled to a steady state via a drive by suitable classical lasers. We show that the vibrations of the membranes can be entangled in this steady state. They thus form two mechanical, macroscopic degrees of freedom that share steady state entanglement.
We demonstrate production of quantum correlated and entangled beams by second harmonic generation in a nonlinear resonator with two output ports. The output beams at wavelength 428.5 nm exhibit 0.9 dB of nonclassical intensity correlations and 0.3 dB of entanglement.
Dielectric four-port devices play an important role in optical quantum information processing. Since for causality reasons the permittivity is a complex function of frequency, dielectrics are typical examples of noisy quantum channels, which cannot preserve quantum coherence. To study the effects of quantum decoherence, we start from the quantized electromagnetic field in an arbitrary Kramers--Kronig dielectric of given complex permittivity and construct the transformation relating the output quantum state to the input quantum state, without placing restrictions on the frequency. We apply the …
We show that non-classical intensity correlations and quadrature entanglement can be generated by frequency doubling in a resonator with two output ports. We predict twin-beam intensity correlations 6 dB below the coherent state limit, and that the product of the inference variances of the quadrature fluctuations gives an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation coefficient of V_EPR = 0.6 < 1. Comparison with an entanglement source based on combining two frequency doublers with a beam splitter shows that the dual ported resonator provides stronger entanglement at lower levels of individual be…
We investigate the generation of entanglement between two quantum emitters through the inverse-design engineering of their photonic environment. By means of a topology-optimization approach acting at the level of the electromagnetic Dyadic Green's function, we generate dielectric cloaks operating at different inter-emitter distances and incoherent pumping strengths. We show that the structures obtained maximize the dissipative coupling between the emitters under extremely different Purcell factor conditions, and yield steady-state concurrence values much larger than those attainable in free sp…
We present a novel approach to the study of entanglement decay, which focuses on collective properties. As an example, we investigate the entanglement decay of a two-qubit system, produced by local identical reservoirs acting on the qubits, for three experimentally and theoretically relevant cases. We study the probability distributions of disentanglement times, a quantity independent of the measure used to quantify entanglement, and the time-dependent probability distribution of concurrence. Analytical results are obtained for initially uniformly distributed pure states. The calculation of th…

We show how an idealised measurement procedure can condense photons from two modes into one, and how, by feeding forward the results of the measurement, it is possible to generate efficiently superpositions of components for which only one mode is populated, commonly called ``N00N states''. For the basic procedure, sources of number states leak onto a beam splitter, and the output ports are monitored by photodetectors. We find that detecting a fixed fraction of the input at one output port suffices to direct the remainder to the same port with high probability, however large the initial state.…
Normalized quantum Stokes operators introduced in [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 95}, 042113 (2017)] enable one to better observe non-classical correlations of entangled states of optical fields with undefined photon numbers. For a given run of an experiment the new quantum Stokes operators are defined by the differences of the measured intensities (or photon numbers) at the exits of a polarizer divided by their sum. It is this ratio that is to be averaged, and not the numerator and the denominator separately, as it is in the conventional approach. The new approach allows to construct more robust entangle…
Quantum Spin Liquids (QSLs) are phases of interacting spins that do not order even at the absolute zero temperature, making it impossible to characterize them by a local order parameter. In this article, we review the unique view provided by the quantum entanglement on QSLs. We illustrate the crucial role of Topological Entanglement Entropy in diagnosing the non-local order in QSLs, using specific examples such as the Chiral Spin Liquid. We also demonstrate the detection of anyonic quasiparticles and their braiding statistics using quantum entanglement. In the context of gapless QSLs, we discu…
The influence of losses in the interferometric generation and the transmission of continuous-variable entangled light is studied, with special emphasis on Gaussian states. Based on the theory of quantum-state transformation at absorbing dielectric devices, the amount of entanglement is quantified by means of the relative-entropy measure. Upper bounds of entanglement and the distance to the set of separable Gaussian states are calculated. Compared with the distance measure, the bounds can substantially overestimate the entanglement. In particular, they do not show the drastic decrease of entang…
In this Letter we study the entanglement of a quantum radiation field interacting with a dielectric medium. In particular, we describe the quantum mixed state of a field interacting with a dielectric through plasma and Drude models and show that these generate very different entanglement behavior, as manifested in the entanglement entropy of the field. We also present a formula for a "Casimir" entanglement entropy, i.e., the distance dependence of the field entropy. Finally, we study a toy model of the interaction between two plates. In this model, the field entanglement entropy is divergent; …
We show that current correlations at the exit ports of a beam splitter can be used to detect electronic entanglement for a fairly general input state. This includes the situation where electron pairs can enter the beam splitter from the same port or be separated due to backscattering. The proposed scheme allows to discriminate between occupation-number and degree-of-freedom entanglement.
Port-based teleportation (PBT) is a teleportation scheme such that the teleported state appears in one of receiver's multiple output ports without any correcting operation on the output port. In this paper, we make some remarks on PBT. Those include the possibility of recoverable PBT (a hybrid protocol between PBT and the standard teleportation scheme), the possibility of port-based superdense coding (a dual protocol to PBT), and the fidelily upper bound expected from the entanglement monogamy relation in asymmetric universal cloning.
Quantum Beam Splitter as a Deterministic Entanglement Source: Exact Photon-Number Statistics, Hong-Ou-Mandel Interference, and von Neumann Entropy Scaling from Balanced Inputs
Quantum metrology and quantum communications are typically considered as distinct applications in the broader portfolio of quantum technologies. However, there are cases where we might want to combine the two and recent proposals have shown how this might be achieved in entanglement-based systems. Here we present an entanglement-free alternative that has advantages in terms of simplicity and practicality, requiring only individual qubits to be transmitted. We demonstrate the performance of the scheme in both the low and high data limits, showing quantum advantages both in terms of measurement …
We show that the generation of entanglement of two heavily macroscopic mirrors with masses of up to several kilograms are feasible with state of the art techniques of high-precision laser interferometry. The basis of such a demonstration would be a Michelson interferometer with suspended mirrors and simultaneous homodyne detections at both interferometer output ports. We present the connection between the generation of entanglement and the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) for a free mass. The SQL is a well-known reference limit in operating interferometers for gravitational-wave detection and prov…
We report on a scheme for the creation of time-bin entangled states out of two subsequent single photons. Both photons arrive on the same input port of a beamsplitter and the situation in which the photons leave the beamsplitter on different output ports is post-selected. We derive a full quantum mechanical analysis of such time-bin entanglement for emitters subject to uncorrelated dephasing processes and apply this model to sequential single photons emerging from a single semiconductor quantum dot. Our results indicate that the visibility of entanglement is degraded by decoherence effects in …
The state of a two-particle system is called entangled when its quantum mechanical wave function cannot be factorized in two single-particle wave functions. Entanglement leads to the strongest counter-intuitive feature of quantum mechanics, namely nonlocality. Experimental realization of quantum entanglement is relatively easy for the case of photons; a pump photon can spontaneously split into a pair of entangled photons inside a nonlinear crystal. In this paper we combine quantum entanglement with nanostructured metal optics in the form of optically thick metal films perforated with a periodi…
We report the possibility of completely destructive interference of three indistinguishable photons on a three port device providing a generalisation of the well known Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of two indistinguishable photons on a two port device. Our analysis is based on the underlying mathematical framework of SU(3) transformations rather than SU(2) transformations. We show the completely destructive three photon interference for a large range of parameters of the three port device and point out the physical origin of such interference in terms of the contributions from different quantum …
The scheme of quantum teleportation, where Bob has multiple (N) output ports and obtains the teleported state by simply selecting one of the N ports, is thoroughly studied. We consider both deterministic version and probabilistic version of the teleportation scheme aiming to teleport an unknown state of a qubit. Moreover, we consider two cases for each version: (i) the state employed for the teleportation is fixed to a maximally entangled state, and (ii) the state is also optimized as well as Alice's measurement. We analytically determine the optimal protocols for all the four cases, and show …
The entanglement phenomenon on example of Smolin state of four qubits is discussed. This state is known as bound entangled state and the spin tomogram of the state is found in explicit form. The qubit portrait method is used the Bell inequality violation which provides another tool to prove the property of entanglement of the four-qubit state under consideration.
We present a quantum key distribution (QKD) system based on polarisation entanglement for use in telecom fibers. A QKD exchange up to 50km was demonstrated in the laboratory with a secure key rate of 550 bit/s. The system is compact, portable with a fully automated start-up and stabilisation modules for polarisation, synchronisation and photon coupling allow a hands-off operation. Stable and reliable key exchange in a deployed optical fiber of 16km length was demonstrated. In this fiber network we achieved over two weeks an automatic key generation with an average key rate of 2000 bit/s withou…
Applying the recently developed formalism of quantum-state transformation at absorbing dielectric four-port devices [L.~Knöll, S.~Scheel, E.~Schmidt, D.-G.~Welsch, and A.V.~Chizhov, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 59}, 4716 (1999)], we calculate the quantum state of the outgoing modes of a two-mode squeezed vacuum transmitted through optical fibers of given extinction coefficients. Using the Peres--Horodecki separability criterion for continuous variable systems [R.~Simon, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 2726 (2000)], we compute the maximal length of transmission of a two-mode squeezed vacuum through an absorbin…

The polarization analysis of quantized probe light transmitted through an atomic ensemble has been used to prepare entangled collective atomic states. In a "balanced" detection configuration, where the difference signal from two detection ports is analyzed, the continuous monitoring of a component of the Stokes field vector provides a means for conditional projective measurements on the atomic system. Here, we make use of classical driving fields, in the pulsed regime, and of an "unbalanced" detection setup (single detector) where the effective photon number of scattered photons is the detecte…
As a variant of the original quantum teleportation, the port-based teleportation has been proposed, and its various kinds of useful applications in quantum information processing have been explored. Two users in the port-based teleportation initially share an arbitrary pure state, which can be represented by applying one user's local operation to a bipartite maximally entangled state. If the maximally entangled state is a $2M$-qudit state, then it can be expressed as $M$ copies of a two-qudit maximally entangled state, where $M$ is the number of the ports. We here consider a generalization of …
The Ullersma model for the damped harmonic oscillator is coupled to the quantised electromagnetic field. All material parameters and interaction strengths are allowed to depend on position. The ensuing Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of canonical fields, and diagonalised by performing a normal-mode expansion. The commutation relations of the diagonalising operators are in agreement with the canonical commutation relations. For the proof we replace all sums of normal modes by complex integrals with the help of the residue theorem. The same technique helps us to explicitly calculate the quantu…
We study the dynamical Casimir effect in a double superconducting cavity in a circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture. Parameters in the quantum circuit are chosen in such a way the superconducting cavity can mimic a double cavity, formed by two perfectly conducting outer walls and a dielectric one, with arbitrary permittivity separating both halves. We undertake a spectral analysis of the cavity, showing that the spectrum varies significantly depending on the values of the susceptibility of the dielectric mirror and the relative lengths of both cavities. We study the creation of photons …
We have constructed an efficient source of photon pairs using a waveguide-type nonlinear device and performed a two-photon interference experiment with an unbalanced Michelson interferometer. Parametric down-converted photons from the nonlinear device are detected by two detectors located at the output ports of the interferometer. Because the interferometer is constructed with two optical paths of different length, photons from the shorter path arrive at the detector earlier than those from the longer path. We find that the difference of arrival time and the time window of the coincidence coun…
Rydberg atom arrays constitute a promising quantum information platform, where control over several hundred qubits has been demonstrated. Further scaling could significantly benefit from coupling to integrated optical or electronic devices, enabling quantum networking and new control tools, but this integration is challenging due to Rydberg sensitivity to the electric field noise from surfaces. We demonstrate that Rydberg coherence and two-atom entanglement can be generated and maintained at distances of 100 microns from a nanoscale dielectric device. Using coherent manipulation of individual …
The modification of initially entangled light pulses passing through dispersive and absorbing four-port devices is studied, using recently obtained results on quantum state transformations [Phys. Rev. A 59, 4716 (1999)]. The fidelity and indices of quantum correlations based on the von Neumann entropy are calculated. Their dependence on both the pulse shape and the four-port device parameters is studied. It is shown, that due to dispersion and absorption the quantum correlations are reduced substantially for large initial entanglement.
We investigate a class of one-dimensional, exactly solvable anisotropic XY spin-1/2 models in an alternating transverse magnetic field from an entanglement perspective. We find that a physically motivated Lie-algebraic generalized entanglement measure faithfully portraits the static phase diagram -- including second- and fourth-order quantum phase transitions belonging to distinct universality classes. In the simplest time-dependent scenario of a slow quench across a quantum critical point, we identify parameter regimes where entanglement exhibits universal dynamical scaling relative to the st…
In this paper, we argue that quantum coherence in a bipartite system can be contained either locally or in the correlations between the subsystems. The portion of quantum coherence contained within correlations can be viewed as a kind quantum correlation which we call correlated coherence. We demonstrate that the framework provided by correlated coherence allows us retrieve the same concepts of quantum correlations as defined by the asymmetric and symmetrized versions of quantum discord as well as quantum entanglement, thus providing a unified view of these correlations. We also prove that cor…
Near-term quantum computers can hold only a small number of qubits. One way to facilitate large-scale quantum computations is through a distributed network of quantum computers. In this work, we consider the problem of distributing quantum programs represented as quantum circuits across a quantum network of heterogeneous quantum computers, in a way that minimizes the overall communication cost required to execute the distributed circuit. We consider two ways of communicating: cat-entanglement that creates linked copies of qubits across pairs of computers, and teleportation. The heterogeneous c…
We analyse the problem of transmitting a number of unknown quantum states or one composite system in one go. We derive a lower bound on the performance of such process, measured in the entanglement fidelity. The obtained bound is effectively computable and outperforms the explicit values of the entanglement fidelity calculated for the pre-existing variants of the port-based protocols, allowing for teleportation of a much larger amount of quantum information. The comparison with the exact formulas and similar analysis for the probabilistic scheme is also discussed. In particular, we present the…
A scheme for suppressing the correlated noise in signals transmitted over the bosonic Gaussian memory channels is proposed. This is a compromise solution rather than removing the noise completely. The scheme is based on linear optical elements, two $N$-port splitters and $N$ number of phase flips. The proposed scheme has the advantages that the correlated noise of the memory channels are greatly suppressed, and the input signal states can be protected excellently when transmitting over the noise channels. We examine the suppressing efficiency of the scheme for the correlated noise, both from q…
The theory of phase control of coherence, entanglement and quantum steering is developed for an optomechanical system composed of a single mode cavity containing a partially transmitting dielectric membrane and driven by short laser pulses. The closed loop in the coupling creates interfering channels which depend on the relative phase of the coupling strengths of the field modes to the mechanical mode. We show several interesting phase dependent effects such as reversible population transfer from one field mode to the other, creation of collective modes, and induced coherence without induced e…
The task of non-local quantum computation requires implementation of a unitary on $n$ qubits between two parties with only one round of communication, ideally with minimal pre-shared entanglement. We introduce a new protocol that makes use of the fact that port-based teleportation costs much less entanglement when done only on a small number of qubits at a time. Whereas previous protocols have entanglement cost independent of the unitary or scaling with its complexity, the cost of the new protocol scales with the non-locality of the unitary. Specifically, it takes the form $\sim n^{4V}$ with $…
Effective state transfer is one of the most important problems in quantum information processing. Typically, a quantum information device is composed of many subsystems with multi-input ports. In this paper, we develop a general theory describing the condition for perfect state transfer from the multi-input ports to the internal system components, for general passive linear quantum systems. The key notion used is the zero of the transfer function matrix. Application to entanglement generation and distribution in a quantum network is also discussed.
Photons are the elementary quantum excitations of the electromagnetic field. Quantization is usually constructed on the basis of an expansion in eigenmodes, in the form of plane waves. Since they form a basis, other electromagnetic configurations can be constructed by linear combinations. In this presentation we discuss a formulation constructed in the general formalism of bosonic Fock space, in which the quantum excitation can be constructed directly on localized pulses of arbitrary shape. Although the two formulations are essentially equivalent, the direct formulation in terms of pulses has …
We utilize quantum discord to charecterize the correlation present in Buzek-Hillery quantum copying machine \cite{bh} (not necessarily universal quantum cloning machine). In other words we quantify the correlation present beetween the original and the replicated copy of the quantum state obtained at the outport port, Interestingly, we find some domain of the machine parameter, for which the quantum disord is non negative even in the mere absence of entanglement. These non zero values of the quantum discord is a strong signature for the presence of non classical correlations. This is one step f…
Preservation of the entangled state of a quantum system is relevant in quantum applications. However, the preservation of entangled states is constrained due to the energy dissipation of the quantum system arising from the environment. As a result, the design of the environment seen by quantum bits is relevant due to its relation to the final state of the quantum system. This work presents the concurrence measure of entanglement between two qubits coupled to a rolled-up epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) waveguide reservoir consisting of an alternating layer of metal and dielectric. Our numerical calcula…
Birefringent materials or nanostructures that introduce phase differences between two linear polarizations underpin the operation of wave plates for polarization control of light. Here we develop metasurfaces realizing a distinct class of complex-birefringent wave plates, which combine polarization transformation with a judiciously tailored polarization-dependent phase retardance and amplitude filtering via diffraction. We prove that the presence of loss enables the mapping from any chosen generally non-orthogonal pair of polarizations to any other pair at the output. We establish an optimal t…
Metamaterials have been a major research area for more than two decades now, involving artificial structures with predesigned electromagnetic properties constructed from deep subwavelength building blocks. They have been used to demonstrate a wealth of fascinating phenomena ranging from negative refractive index and epsilon-near-zero to cloaking, emulations of general relativity effects, and super-resolution imaging, to name a few. In the past few years, metamaterials have been suggested as a new platform for quantum optics, and several pioneering experiments have already been carried out with…
In this paper, after some recalls about connectivity structures and about the formalisms of quantum mechanics, we associate some families of connectivity structures with any entangled quantum state, and with any "measurement device" on such states. This finally allows us to define a new classification tool for quantum entanglement: the connectivity order. --- Dans ce texte, après des rappels d'une part sur la notion de structure connective et d'autre part sur les formalismes de la mécanique quantique, nous associons certaines familles de structures connectives à tout état quantique intriquant …
