We demonstrate the guiding of neutral atoms by the magnetic fields due to microfabricated current-carrying wires on a chip. Atoms are guided along a magnetic field minimum parallel to and above the current-carrying wires. Two waveguide configurations are demonstrated: one using two wires with an external magnetic field, and a second using four wires without an external field. These waveguide geometries can be extended to integrated atom optics circuits, including beamsplitters.
Guiding of Rydberg atoms in a high-gradient magnetic guide
We demonstrate an efficient optical guiding technique for coupling cold atoms in the near field of a planar nanophotonic circuit, and realize large atom-photon coupling to a whispering-gallery mode in a microring resonator with a single-atom cooperativity $C\gtrsim 8$. The guiding potential is created by diffracted light on a nanophotonic waveguide that smoothly connects to a dipole trap in the far field for atom guiding with subwavelength precision. We observe atom-induced transparency for light coupled to a microring, characterize the atom-photon coupling rate, extract guided atom flux, and …
We explore a scheme for guiding cold atoms through a hollow Bessel beam generated by a single axicon and a lens from a 2D magneto-optical trap toward a science chamber. We compare the Bessel beam profiles measured along the optical axis to a numerical propagation of the beam's wavefront, and we show how it is affected by diffraction during the passage through a long narrow funnel serving as a differential pumping tube between the chambers. We derive an approximate analytic expression for the intensity distribution of the Bessel beam and the dipolar optical force acting on the atoms. By a Monte…
We have developed a unique neutralizer device that uses an yttrium target surrounded by a platinum wall to magneto-optically trap radioactive atoms. In general, the radioactive nucleus produced in a nuclear reaction is extracted and transported in ion form. For the magneto-optical trap, thermal neutralization must occur on the surface of a metal with a small work function. The converter can produce a neutral atomic beam with small angular divergence that, given the recycling of atoms and ions, converts ions into neutral atoms with remarkable efficiency. We demonstrated the ion neutralization p…
Predicted twenty years ago, positron binding to neutral atoms has not yet been observed experimentally. A new scheme is proposed to detect positron-atom bound states by colliding Rydberg positronium (Ps) with neutral atoms. Estimates of the charge-transfer reaction cross section are obtained using the first Born approximation for a selection of neutral atom targets and a wide range of incident Ps energies and principal quantum numbers. We also estimate the corresponding Ps ionization cross section. The accuracy of the calculations is tested by comparison with earlier predictions for Ps charge …
We demonstrate the parallel and non-destructive readout of the hyperfine state for optically trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms. The scheme is based on state-selective fluorescence imaging and achieves detection fidelities $>$98% within 10$\,$ms, while keeping 99% of the atoms trapped. For the read-out of dense arrays of neutral atoms in optical lattices, where the fluorescence images of neighboring atoms overlap, we apply a novel image analysis technique using Bayesian inference to determine the internal state of multiple atoms. Our method is scalable to large neutral atom registers relevant for future …
We present a method for generating cold neutral atoms via charge exchange reactions between trapped ions and Rydberg positronium. The high charge exchange reaction cross section leads to efficient neutralisation of the ions and since the positronium-ion mass ratio is small, the neutrals do not gain appreciable kinetic energy in the process. When the original ions are cold the reaction produces neutrals that can be trapped or further manipulated with electromagnetic fields. Because a wide range of species can be targeted we envisage that our scheme may enable experiments at low temperature that…
Photoelectron angular distributions following the non-resonant two-photon K-shell ionization of neutral atoms are studied theoretically. Using the independent particle approximation and relativistic second-order perturbation theory, the contributions of screening and relativistic effects to the photoelectron angular distribution are evaluated. A simple nonrelativistic expression is presented for the angle-differential cross section in dipole approximation for two-photon ionization by elliptically polarized photons, and its limitations are analyzed numerically. Moreover, we show that screening …
We demonstrate qubit state measurement for ~160 Cesium atoms in a 3D optical lattice based on coherent spatial splitting of the atoms' wavefunctions. The measurement fidelity is 0.9994, essentially independent of the number of qubits measured. The detection scheme is reminiscent of the Stern-Gerlach experiment, but carried out in light traps. The measurement causes no loss, which allows us to demonstrate re-initialization of the 3D qubit array after state measurement, including the replacement of an atom lost to a background gas collision.
Total ionization cross sections of H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, P, S and Ar neutral atoms by impact of antiprotons, H^{+}, He^{2+}, Be^{4+}, % C^{6+} and O^{8+}. were calculated using the CDWEIS (continuum distorted wave -Eikonal Initial state) theoretical method. Cross section depending on of initial the quantum numbers n and l are reported in Tables for a range of impact energies covering from 100 keV/amu to 10 MeV/amu
Integrated photonic circuits based on suspended photonic rib waveguides, which can be used for coherent trapping, guiding, and splitting of ultra-cold neutral atoms in two-colour evanescent light fields near their surfaces, are described. Configurations of quantum inertial sensors based on such integrated atomo-photonic waveguides, which are simultaneously guiding photons and atoms along the same paths, are presented. The difference between free-space and guided atom interferometers in the presence of external forces is explained. The theoretical and technological challenges, to be overcome on…
Photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs) from atoms and molecules undergo qualitative changes as laser parameters are varied. We present a model to interpret the shape of the PMDs. The electron's motion is guided by a fictitious particle in our model, clearly characterizing two distinct dynamical behaviors: direct ionization and rescattering. As laser ellipticity is varied, our model reproduces the bifurcation in the PMDs seen in experiments.
We investigate the role of the Coulomb interaction in strong field processes. We find that the Coulomb field of the ion makes its presence known even in highly intense laser fields, in contrast to the assumptions of the strong field approximation. The dynamics of the electron after ionization is analyzed with four models for an arbitrary laser polarization: the Hamiltonian model in the dipole approximation, the strong field approximation, the Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation and the guiding center. These models illustrate clearly the Coulomb effects, in particular Coulomb focusing …
We demonstrate arbitrary coherent addressing of individual neutral atoms in a $5\times 5\times 5$ array formed by an optical lattice. Addressing is accomplished using rapidly reconfigurable crossed laser beams to selectively ac Stark shift target atoms, so that only target atoms are resonant with state-changing microwaves. The effect of these targeted single qubit gates on the quantum information stored in non-targeted atoms is smaller than $3\times 10^{-3}$ in state fidelity. This is an important step along the path of converting the scalability promise of neutral atoms into reality.
We report on the state of the art of quantum walk experiments with neutral atoms in state-dependent optical lattices. We demonstrate a novel state-dependent transport technique enabling the control of two spin-selective sublattices in a fully independent fashion. This transport technique allowed us to carry out a test of single-particle quantum interference based on the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality and, more recently, to probe two-particle quantum interference effects with neutral atoms cooled into the motional ground state. These experiments lay the groundwork for the study of dis…
A classical approach based on hyperspherical coordinates is used to derive a first principle formulation of the the ion-neutral-neutral three-body recombination rate, A$^+$ + A + A $\rightarrow$ $\text{A}_2^+$ + A, in terms of the mass of the atom and its polarizability. The robustness and predictive power of our approach have been checked in comparison with experimental data of rare gas three-body recombination as well as previous theoretical frameworks, which need one or two atom-dependent fitting parameters. Thus, our approach is general and applicable to any ion-atom-atom system.
Conditions to achieve an unusually strong Rydberg spin-exchange interaction are investigated and proposed as a means to generate pairwise entanglement and realize a SWAP-like quantum gate for neutral atoms. Ground-state entanglement is created by mapping entangled Rydberg states to ground states using optical techniques. A protocol involving SWAP gate and pairwise entanglement operations is predicted to create global entanglement of a chain of $N$ atoms in a time that is independent of $N$.
The performance of many control tasks with Rydberg atoms can be improved via suppression of the motion-induced dephasing between ground and Rydberg states of neutral atoms. The dephasing often occurs during the {\it gap} time when the atom is shelved in a Rydberg state before its deexcitation. By using laser fields to induce specific extra phase change to the Rydberg state during the gap time, it is possible to faithfully transfer the Rydberg state back to the ground state after the gap. Although the Rydberg state transitions back and forth between different eigenstates during the gap time, it…
Imaging surfaces using low energy neutral atom scattering is a relatively recent development in the field of microscopy. In this work we demonstrate that this technique is sensitive enough to distinguish films as thin as a single monolayer from the underlying substrate. Using collimated beams of He and Kr atoms as an incident probe on MoS$_2$ films grown on SiO$_2$/Si substrate, we observe systematic changes in the scattered atom flux which allows us to map the thin MoS$_2$ films. Measurements carried out by varying incidence energy using both He and Kr provides insights into the details of at…
We report the trapping of ultracold neutral $ \text{Rb}$ atoms and $ \text{Ba}^+ $ ions in a common optical potential in absence of any radiofrequency (RF) fields. We prepare $ \text{Ba}^+ $ at $ 370 ~ μK $ and demonstrate efficient sympathetic cooling by $100 ~ μK $ after one collision. Our approach is currently limited by the $ \text{Rb}$ density and related three-body losses, but it overcomes the fundamental limitation in RF traps set by RF-driven, micromotion-induced heating. It is applicable to a wide range of ion-atom species, and may enable novel ultracold chemistry experiments and comp…
Neutral atoms are building blocks of ground-up quantum many-body systems. Well-controlled and high-fidelity entangling gates are an essential component for realizing complex neutral atom architectures for quantum computing, quantum simulation, and measurement with precision better than the standard quantum limit. In this Letter we report the realization of a Mølmer-Sørensen unitary between two neutral atoms, based on adiabatic single-photon dressing to Rydberg levels. We show that this technique is highly robust to noise sources and experimental imperfections that have limited the fidelity of …
