We have recently demonstrated the creation of regular strings of neutral caesium atoms in a standing wave optical dipole trap using optical tweezers [Y. Miroshnychenko et al., Nature, in press (2006)]. The rearrangement is realized atom-by-atom, extracting an atom and re-inserting it at the desired position with sub-micrometer resolution. We describe our experimental setup and present detailed measurements as well as simple analytical models for the resolution of the extraction process, for the precision of the insertion, and for heating processes. We compare two different methods of insertion, one of which permits the placement of two atoms into one optical micropotential. The theoretical models largely explain our experimental results and allow us to identify the main limiting factors for the precision and efficiency of the manipulations. Strategies for future improvements are discussed.
We present protocols for dissipative entanglement of three trapped-ion qubits and discuss a scheme that uses sympathetic cooling as the dissipation mechanism. This scheme relies on tailored destructive interference to generate any one of six entangled W states in a three-ion qubit space. Using a beryllium-magnesium ion crystal as an example system, we theoretically investigate the protocol's performance and the effects of likely error sources, including thermal secular motion of the ion crystal, calibration imperfections, and spontaneous photon scattering. We estimate that a fidelity of $\sim$…
The Zeeman hyperfine state dependent force in a Stern-Gerlach (SG) experiment has been exploited to separate and detect atoms having different Zeeman hyperfine states in a cold atom cloud. Utilizing this SG technique, we have made the quantitative estimate of atoms in different Zeeman hyperfine states in an atom cloud, which has been helpful in optimizing the optical pumping of atoms for efficient preparation of atomic state. Employing an optimized optical pumping, nearly $92 \% $ of cold $^{87}Rb$ atoms from a grey magneto-optical trap (G-MOT) on atom-chip have been optically pumped to the tr…
We observe a sixfold Purcell broadening of the D$_2$ line of an optically trapped $^{87}\text{Rb}$ atom strongly coupled to a fiber cavity. Under external illumination by a near-resonant laser, up to $90\%$ of the atom's fluorescence is emitted into the resonant cavity mode. The sub-Poissonian statistics of the cavity output and the Purcell enhancement of the atomic decay rate are confirmed by the observation of a strongly narrowed antibunching dip in the photon autocorrelation function. The photon leakage through the higher-transmission mirror of the single-sided resonator is the dominant con…
We study quantum vortex states consisting of a ring of vortices with alternating sign, in a homogeneous superfluid confined to a circular domain. We find an exact stationary solution of the point vortex model for the neutral vortex necklace. We investigate the stability of the necklace state within both the point-vortex model and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate at low temperature. The point-vortex stationary states are found to also be stationary states of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation provided the finite thickness of the outer fluid boundary …
We achieve fast, nondestructive quantum-state readout via fluorescence detection of a single $^{87}$Rb atom in the 5$S_{1/2}$ ($F=2$) ground state held in an optical dipole trap. The atom is driven by linearly-polarized readout laser beams, making the scheme insensitive to the distribution of atomic population in the magnetic sub-levels. We demonstrate a readout fidelity of $97.6\pm0.2\%$ in a readout time of $160\pm20$ $μ$s with the atom retained in $>97\%$ of the trials, representing an advancement over other magnetic-state-insensitive techniques. We demonstrate that the $F=2$ state is parti…
We report the preparation of exactly one $^{87}$Rb atom and one $^{133}$Cs atom in the same optical tweezer as the essential first step towards the construction of a tweezer array of individually trapped $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules. Through careful selection of the tweezer wavelengths, we show how to engineer species-selective trapping potentials suitable for high-fidelity preparation of Rb $+$ Cs atom pairs. Using a wavelength of 814~nm to trap Rb and 938~nm to trap Cs, we achieve loading probabilities of $0.508(6)$ for Rb and $0.547(6)$ for Cs using standard red-detuned molasses cooling. L…

We propose a novel cooling scheme for realising single photon sideband cooling on particles trapped in a state-dependent optical potential. We develop a master rate equation from an ab-initio model and find that in experimentally feasible conditions it is possible to drastically reduce the average occupation number of the vibrational levels by applying a frequency sweep on the cooling laser that sequentially cools all the motional states. Notably, this cooling scheme works also when a particle experiences a deeper trap in its internal ground state than in its excited state, a condition for whi…
High-fidelity two-qubit quantum logic gates using trapped calcium-43 ions
Quantum networks consisting of quantum memories and photonic interconnects can be used for entanglement distribution (L.-M.Duan and H. J. Kimble, PRL 90, 253601 (2003), H. J. Kimble, Nat. 453, 1023 EP (2008)), quantum teleportation (S.Pirandola et.al, Nat. Photon. 9, 641 (2015)), and distributed quantum computing (T.Spiller, et.al., New J. Phys. 8, 30 (2006). In order to study interactions of atomic ions with ultracold neutral atoms, it is important to have sub-$μ$m control over positioning ion crystals. Serving for this purpose, we introduce a microfabricated planar ion trap featuring 21 DC electrodes. The ion trap is controlled by a home-made FPGA voltage source providing independently variable voltages to each of the DC electrodes. To assure stable positioning of ion crystals with respect to trapped neutral atoms, we integrate into the overall design a compact mirror magneto optical chip trap (mMOT) for cooling and confining neutral $^{87}$Rb at…
Gate model quantum computers promise to solve currently intractable computational problems if they can be operated at scale with long coherence times and high fidelity logic. Neutral atom hyperfine qubits provide inherent scalability due to their identical characteristics, long coherence times, and ability to be trapped in dense multi-dimensional arrays\cite{Saffman2010}. Combined with the strong entangling interactions provided by Rydberg states\cite{Jaksch2000,Gaetan2009,Urban2009}, all the necessary characteristics for quantum computation are available. Here we demonstrate several quantum a…
