It is shown that the interference between spontaneous emission into the non-lasing supermode and the laser field of a semiconductor laser array causes spatial holeburning which couples the dynamics of the spontaneous emission with the laser field. In particular, phase locking between the spontaneous emission and the lasing mode leads to the formation of a spectral triplet composed of in-phase relaxation oscillation sidebands and an out-of-phase line at the lasing frequency.
The amplified spontaneous emission spectrum of the light field in the non-lasing supermode of two coupled semiconductor lasers is analyzed using linearized Langevin equations. It is shown that the interference betweeen the laser mode and the fluctuating light field in the non-lasing mode causes spatial holeburning. This effect introduces a phase sensitive coupling between the laser field and the fluctuations in the non-lasing mode. For high laser fields, this coupling splits the spectrum of the non-lasing mode into a triplet consisting of two relaxation oscillation sidebands which are in phase…
We investigate the lasing action in coupled multi-row nanopillar waveguides of periodic or fractal structure using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, coupled to the laser rate equations. Such devices exhibit band splitting with distinct and controllable supermode formation. We demonstrate that selective lasing into each of the supermodes is possible. The structure acts as a microlaser with selectable wavelength. Lasing mode selection is achieved by means of coaxial injection seeding with a Gaussian signal of appropriate transverse amplitude and phase profiles. Based on this we pr…
Flatband photonic lattices, i.e. arrays of waveguides or resonators displaying a flat Bloch band, offer new routes for light trapping and distortion-free imaging. Here it is shown that flatland lattices can show stable and cooperative laser emission when optical gain is supplied to the system, despite the large degree of degeneracy of flatland supermodes. By considering a quasi one-dimensional rhombic lattice of coupled semiconductor microrings, selective pumping of the outer sublattices can induce cooperative lasing in a supermode of the flat band
Spatial coherence quantifies spatial field correlations over time, and is one of the fundamental properties of light. Here we investigate the spatial coherence of highly multimode lasers in the regime of short time scales. Counter intuitively, we show that in this regime, the temporal (longitudinal) modes play a crucial role in spatial coherence reduction. To evaluate the spatial coherence we measured the temporal dynamics of speckle fields generated by a highly multimode laser with over $10^5$ lasing spatial (transverse) modes, and examined the dependence of speckle contrast on the exposure t…
We have measured the spectral correlations and intensity statistics of random lasing modes in weakly scattering systems, and compared them to those of the amplified spontaneous emission spikes. Their dramatic differences revealed the distinct physical mechanisms. We find that local excitation of a weakly scattering system may greatly reduce the number of lasing modes even without absorption outside the pumped region. The lasing modes can be very different from the quasimodes of the passive system due to selective amplification of the feedback from the scatterers within the local gain region.
The first continuous-wave two-photon absorption laser-induced stimulated emission (CTALISE) is demonstrated. The 7^1S-6^1P transition in mercury at 1014nm wavelength is used and selective lasing of different isotopes is observed.
We measured the ensemble-averaged spectral correlation functions and statistical distributions of spectral spacing and intensity for lasing modes in weakly scattering systems, and compared them to those of the amplified spontaneous emission spikes. Their dramatic differences illustrated the distinct physical mechanisms. Our numerical simulation revealed that even without reabsorption the number of potential lasing modes might be greatly reduced by local excitation of a weakly scattering system. The lasing modes could be drastically different from the quasimodes of the passive system due to sel…
Coherent combination of emission power from an array of coupled semiconductor lasers operating on the same chip is of fundamental and technological importance. In general, the nonlinear competition among the array supermodes can entail incoherence and spectral broadening, leading to spatiotemporally unstable and multimode emission pattern and thus poor beam quality. Here, by harnessing notions from supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics, we report that the strategic coupling between a class III-V semiconductor microring laser array with its dissipative superpartner can be used to limit the nu…

We simulate the transition from amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) to lasing in random systems with varying degrees of mode overlap. This is accomplished by solving the stochastic Maxwell-Bloch equations with the finite-difference time-domain method. Below lasing threshold, the continuous emission spectra are narrowed by frequency-dependent amplification. Our simulations reproduce the stochastic emission spikes in the spectra. Well-defined peaks, corresponding to the system resonances, emerge at higher pumping and are narrowed by stimulated emission before lasing takes place. Noise tends to …
We study the effect of spontaneous emission and incoherent atomic pumping on the nonlinear semiclassical dynamics of the unbalanced Dicke model -- a generalization of the Dicke model that features independent coupling strengths for the co- and counter-rotating interaction terms. As well as the ubiquitous superradiant behavior the Dicke model is well-known for, the addition of spontaneous emission combined with the presence of strong counter-rotating terms creates laser-like behavior termed counter-lasing. These states appear in the semiclassical model as stable periodic orbits. We perform a co…
In this report we study the Vernier effect in coupled laser systems consisting of two cavities. We show that depending on the nature of their coupling, not only can the "supermodes" formed at the overlapping resonances of the coupled cavities have the lowest thresholds and lase first as previously suggested, leading to a manifestation of the typical Vernier effect now in an active system; these supermodes can also have increased thresholds and are hence suppressed, which can be viewed as an inverse Vernier effect. We attribute this effect to detuning-dependent Q-spoiling, and it can lead to an…

A long existing issue for microdisk lasers is the small spontaneous emission coupling rate (β) in microdisk,. We found that it is due to the coupling of emitter spontaneous emission into competing Fabry-Perot (FP) modes in the microdisk cavity. Based on this analysis, we propose a new type of photonic crystal microdisk (PCM) laser to drastically suppress the photonic density of states in the vertical FP modes. As a result, we obtained a three fold increase of β than previously reported highest β of 0.15 at room temperature. The spontaneous emission control in truncated photonic crystals become…

Periodic arrays of air nanoholes in thin metal films that support surface plasmon resonances can provide an alternative approach for boosting the light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Indeed, nanohole arrays have garnered great interest in recent years for their use in biosensing, light emission enhancement and spectroscopy. However, the large-scale use of nanohole arrays in emerging technology requires new low-cost fabrication techniques. Here, we demonstrate a simple technique to fabricate nanohole arrays and examine their photonic applications. In contrast to the complicated and most …
Measured and calculated results are presented on the emission properties of a new class of emitters operating in the cavity quantum electrodynamics regime. The structures are based on high-finesse GaAs/AlAs micropillar cavities, each with an active medium consisting of a layer of InGaAs quantum dots and distinguishing feature of having substantial fraction of spontaneous emission channeled into one cavity mode (high-beta factor). This paper shows that the usual criterion for lasing with a conventional (low-beta factor) cavity, a sharp nonlinearity in an input-output curve accompanied by notice…
We present a time-domain model for the simulation of light-matter interaction in semiconductors in arbitrary geometries and across a wide range of excitation conditions. The electromagnetic field is treated classically using the finite-difference time-domain method. The polarization and occupation numbers of the semiconductor material are described using the semiconductor Bloch equations including many-body effects in the screened Hartree-Fock approximation. Spontaneous emission noise is introduced using stochastic driving terms. As an application of the model, we present simulations of the dy…
We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order parameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization…
Steady-state plasmonic lasing is studied theoretically for a system consisting of many dye molecules arranged regularly around a gold nano-sphere. A three-level model with realistic molecular dissipation is employed to analyze the performance as function of the pump field amplitude and number of molecules. Few molecules and moderate pumping produce a single narrow emission peak because the excited molecules transfer energy to a single dipole plasmon mode by amplified spontaneous emission. Under strong pumping, the single peak splits into broader and weaker emission peaks because two molecular …
Nonlinear Heisenberg-Langevin equations are solved analytically by operator Fourier-expansion for the laser in the LED regime. Fluctuations of populations of lasing levels are taken into account as perturbations. Spectra of operator products are calculated as convolutions, preserving Bose commutations for the lasing field operators. It is found that fluctuations of population significantly affect spontaneous and stimulated emissions into the lasing mode, increase the radiation rate, the number of lasing photons and broad the spectrum of a bad cavity thresholdless and the superradiant lasers. T…
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 063902 (2021)], M. A. Carroll et al. derived a model to analytically determine regimes of thermal, collective anti-bunching, and laser emission for emitters in a cavity. According to their model, nanolasers exhibit a distinct threshold at which the coherent laser field emerges from a bifurcation at a finite pump rate. The amplitude of this coherent field increases with a further increase in the pump rate. Such a behavior contrasts the usual view of the transition to lasing in single-mode high-$β$ nanolasers, according to which strong spontaneous emissi…
We report on lasing at visible wavelengths in arrays of ferromagnetic Ni nanodisks overlaid with an organic gain medium. We demonstrate that by placing an organic gain material within the mode volume of the plasmonic nanoparticles both the radiative and, in particular, the high ohmic losses of Ni nanodisk resonances can be compensated. Under increasing pump fluence, the systems exhibit a transition from lattice-modified spontaneous emission to lasing, the latter being characterized by highly directional and sub-nanometer linewidth emission. By breaking the symmetry of the array, we observe tun…
Spontaneous photon bursts are observed in the output collected from a mesoscale semiconductor-based laser near the lasing threshold. Their appearence is compared to predictions obtained from Laser Rate Equations and from a Stochastic Laser Simulator. While the latter is capable of predicting the observed large photon bursts, the photon numbers computed by the former produces a noisy trace well below the experimentally detectable limit. We explain the discrepancy between the two approaches on the basis of an incorrect accounting of the onset of stimulated emission by the Rate Equations, which i…
The random lasing (RL) emission of dyed vesicular polymeric films in diffusive regime of light propagation was investigated under helium temperature. It represents itself the coupling effect of stimulated emission and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Due to the effect a set of Raman lines reveal in RL spectrum. Distinguishing feature of the effect is the stimulated emission promotes the Raman lines revealing. Intensity of Raman lines have quadratic trend on pump intensity. Furthermore SRS in this condition has the more structured spectrum than spontaneous Raman one. It makes enable detection…
We report on a metasurface laser emitting at the valley extremum of a multivalley energy-momentum dispersion. Such peculiar dispersion shape is obtained by hybridizing high quality factor photonic modes of different symmetry and opposite effective mass. The lasing effect takes place at high oblique angle ($\sim$20 degrees), in the telecom wavelength range ($\sim$1580 nm), on silicon substrate and operating at room temperature. Our results show the potential of multivalley dispersion for micro-laser in integrated photonic and beam-steering applications. It also opens the way to study various fe…
The interaction of laser cooled and trapped atoms with resonant light is limited by the linewidth of the excited state of the atom. Another precise optical oscillator is an optical Fabry-Pérot cavity. The combining of cold atoms with optical oscillators is emerging as an area with great potential for precision measurements and the creation of versatile quantum optics systems. Here we show that when driven atoms are in the collectively strongly coupled regime with the cavity, exhibiting vacuum Rabi splitting (VRS), lasing is observed for the emitted light, red detuned from atomic transition. Th…
Amplified spontaneous emission is a source of broadband noise that parasitically limits the achievable gain in laser amplifiers. While optical bandpass filtering elements can suppress these broadband noise contributions, such filters are typically designed around specific frequencies or require manual tuning, rendering them less compatible with tunable laser systems. Here, we introduce a nonlinear self-adaptive filter and demonstrate the suppression of amplified spontaneous emission surrounding the lasing mode of a tunable 780 nm external cavity diode laser, using the two-beam coupling interac…
We present a generic classical light condensation (LC) phenomenon in linear photonic mode systems, such as cw laser cavities, in a noisy environment (spontaneous emission, etc.), based on weighting the modes in a loss-gain scale rather than in photon energy. It is characterized by a sharp transition from multi- to single-mode oscillation. The study uses a linear multivariate Langevin formulation which gives a mode occupation hierarchy that functions like Bose-Einstein statistics. We find that condensation occurs when the spectral filtering has near the lowest loss mode a power law dependence w…
We consider the fundamental problem of high temperature phase transitions in the system of high density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of atomic DSs thermalization pr…
Formation, emission and lasing properties of strain-free InP(As)/AlInAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in AlInAs microdisk (MD) cavity were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. In MD structures, the QDs having nano-pan-cake shape have height of ~2 nm, lateral size of 20-50 nm and density of ~5x109 cm-2. Their emission observed at ~940 nm revealed strong temperature quenching, which points to exciton decomposition. It also showed unexpected type-I character indicating In-As intermixing, as confirmed by band structure calculations. We observed l…
The role of coherent population oscillations is evidenced in the noise spectrum of an ultra-low noise lasers. This effect is isolated in the intensity noise spectrum of an optimized single-frequency vertical external cavity surface emitting laser. The coherent population oscillations induced by the lasing mode manifest themselves through their associated dispersion that leads to slow light effects probed by the spontaneous emission present in the non-lasing side modes.
The CPA-laser is a coexisting state of coherent perfect absorption and lasing that was proposed in parity-time ($\cal PT$) symmetric photonic systems. In this work we show that the spectral signature of a CPA-laser displayed by the singular value spectrum of the scattering matrix ($S$) can be orders of magnitude wider than that displayed by the eigenvalue spectrum of $S$. Since the former reflects how strongly light can be absorbed or amplified and the latter announces the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $S$, these contrasting spectral signatures indicate that near perfect absorption and extr…
Photonic Time Crystals (PTCs) - dielectric media with their refractive index modulated periodically in time, offer new opportunities in photonics arising from time reflections and momentum bandgaps. Here, we study the emission of light from a radiation source inside a PTC. We solve the general classical and quantum mechanical models of emission in a temporally-varying medium, and find that radiation is always exponentially amplified when associated with the momentum gap, whether initiated by a macroscopic source, an atom, or by vacuum fluctuations, drawing the amplification energy from the mod…
Random lasing occurs as the result of a coherent optical feedback from multiple scattering centers. Here, we demonstrate that plasmonic gold nanostars are efficient light scattering centers, exhibiting strong field enhancement at their nanotips, which assists a very narrow bandwidth and highly amplified coherent random lasing with a low lasing threshold. First, by embedding plasmonic gold nanostars in a rhodamine 6G dye gain medium, we observe a series of very narrow random lasing peaks with full-width at half-maximum ~ 0.8 nm. In contrast, free rhodamine 6G dye molecules exhibit only a single…
We report on lasing at room temperature and at telecommunications wavelength from photonic crystal nanocavities based on InAsP/InP quantum dots. Such laser cavities with a small modal volume and high quality factor display a high spontaneous emission coupling factor beta. Lasing is confirmed by measuring the second order autocorrelation function. A smooth transition from chaotic to coherent emission is observed, and coherent emission is obtained at 8 times the threshold power.
Laser diodes based on solution-processable materials could benefit numerous technologies including integrated electronics and photonics, telecommunication, and medical diagnostics. An attractive system for implementing these devices is colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The primary challenge that hampered progress towards a QD laser diode (QLD) has been fast nonradiative Auger decay of optical-gain-active multicarrier states. Recently, this problem has been resolved by employing continuously graded QDs (cg-QDs) wherein Auger recombination is strongly suppressed. The use of these struc…
We studied complex lasing pattern formations in a thin-slice solid-state laser with wide-aperture laser-diode end-pumping. Radial and rectangular vortex arrays were found to be formed in a controlled fashion with symmetric and asymmetric pump beam profiles, respectively. Most of these vortices exhibited single-frequency oscillations arising from a spontaneous process of transverse mode locking of nearly degenerate modes assisted by the laser nonlinearity. Single-frequency rectangular array beams consisting of a large number of vortices, e.g., closely packed 36 or 46 vortex pixels, were generat…
High quality CdS nanowires suspended in air were optically pumped both below and above the lasing threshold. The polarization of the pump laser was varied while emission out of the end facet of the nanowire was monitored in a 'head-on' measurement geometry. Highest pump-efficiency and most efficient absorption of the pump radiation are demonstrated for an incident electric field being polarized parallel to the nanowire axis. This polarization dependence, which was observed both above the lasing threshold and in the regime of amplified spontaneous emission, is caused by an enhanced absorption f…

We present an experimental and theoretical study on the gain mechanism in a photonic-crystal-cavity nanolaser with embedded quantum dots. From time-resolved measurements at low excitation power we find that four excitons are coupled to the cavity. At high excitation power we observe a smooth low-threshold transition from spontaneous emission to lasing. Before lasing emission sets in, however, the excitons are observed to saturate, and the gain required for lasing originates rather from multi-electronic transitions, which give rise to a broad emission background. We compare the experiment to a …
The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nano-lasers. Whilst non-resonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-sta…
We describe a superconducting device capable of producing laser light in the visible range at half the Josephson generation frequency, with the optical phase of the light locked to the superconducting phase difference. An earlier proposed device, the so called "half-Josephson laser" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 073901 (2011)], cannot provide long coherence times, because of spontaneous switchings between the emitter states. To circumvent this we consider N >> 1 emitters driving an optical resonator mode. We derive a general model that captures essential physics of such devices while not depending on…
Formation of a peculiar lasing pattern leading to a TEM00-like mode accompanied by a nonzero bright outer-ring emission (namely, a modified TEM00 mode) was observed in a 300-μm-thick LiNdP4O12 (LNP) laser with reflective flat end mirrors that was pumped with a laser diode whose focused spot size was larger than the lasing beam spot size determined by the thermal lens effect. The photon lifetimes of the laser oscillations were found to be greatly shortened to τ_{p} = 6.74 ps as compared with those in pure TEM00 mode operation, while the fluorescence lifetime was τ= 130 μs. The formation of the …
A pulsed regime of short-cavity, heavily erbium-doped fiber lasers is of high interest for its possible applications in telecommunications and sensorics. Here, we demonstrate these lasers in two configurations, distributed feedback laser and compare it with a classic Fabry-Perot type laser. We have managed to create lasers that function stably with cavities as small as 50 mm. Pulse properties such as amplitude, frequency and duration, are in a good agreement with our theoretical analysis, which takes into account spontaneous emission. We report the observation of the thermal switching effect, …
A disordered mean field model for multimode laser in open and irregular cavities is proposed and discussed within the replica analysis. The model includes the dynamics of the mode intensity and accounts also for the possible presence of a linear coupling between the modes, due, e.g., to the leakages from an open cavity. The complete phase diagram, in terms of disorder strength, source pumping and non-linearity, consists of four different optical regimes: incoherent fluorescence, standard mode locking, random lasing and the novel spontaneous phase locking. A replica symmetry breaking phase tran…
A hallmark of spin-lasers, injected with spin-polarized carriers, is their threshold behavior with the onset of stimulated emission. Unlike the single threshold in conventional lasers with unpolarized carriers, two thresholds are expected in spin lasers. With the progress in scaled-down lasers and the use of novel two-dimensional materials it is unclear if the common description of spin lasers assuming a negligible spontaneous emission and linear optical gain remains relevant or even how to identify the lasing thresholds. Our rate-equation description addresses these questions by considering a…
Metallic nanocavity lasers provide important technological advancement towards even smaller integrable light sources. They give access to widely unexplored lasing physics in which the distinction between different operational regimes, like those of thermal or a coherent light emission, becomes increasingly challenging upon approaching a device with a near-perfect spontaneous-emission coupling factor $β$. In fact, quantum-optical studies have to be employed to reveal a transition to coherent emission in the intensity fluctuation behavior of nanolasers when the input-output characteristic appear…
Plasmonic nanolasers have received a substantial interest for their promising applications in integrated photonics, optical sensing, and biomedical imaging. To date, a room-temperature plasmonic nanolaser, submicron in all dimensions, remains elusive in the visible regime due to high metallic losses. Here, we demonstrate single-particle lasing around 2.3 eV with full-submicron, cesium lead bromide perovskite (CsPbBr3) crystals atop polymer-coated gold substrates at room temperature. With a large number (~100) of devices in total, we systematically study the lasing action of plasmonic test and …
Pb-chalcogenide colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are attractive materials to be used as tuneable laser media across the infrared spectrum. However, excessive nonradiative Auger recombination due to the presence of trap states outcompetes light amplification by rapidly annihilating the exciton population, leading to high gain thresholds. Here, we employ a binary blend of CQDs and ZnO nanocrystals in order to passivate the in-gap trap states of PbS-CQD gain medium. Using transient absorption, we measure a five-fold increase in Auger lifetime demonstrating the suppression of trap-assisted Auger reco…
