Random lasing occurs as the result of a coherent optical feedback from multiple scattering centers. Here, we demonstrate that plasmonic gold nanostars are efficient light scattering centers, exhibiting strong field enhancement at their nanotips, which assists a very narrow bandwidth and highly amplified coherent random lasing with a low lasing threshold. First, by embedding plasmonic gold nanostars in a rhodamine 6G dye gain medium, we observe a series of very narrow random lasing peaks with full-width at half-maximum ~ 0.8 nm. In contrast, free rhodamine 6G dye molecules exhibit only a single amplified spontaneous emission peak with a broader linewidth of 6 nm. The lasing threshold for the dye with gold nanostars is two times lower than that for a free dye. Furthermore, by coating the tip of a single-mode optical fiber with gold nanostars, we demonstrate a collection of random lasing signal through the fiber that can be easily guided and analyzed. Time-resolved measurements show a significant increase in the emission rate above the lasing threshold, indicating a stimulated emission process. Our study provides a method for generating random lasing in the nanoscale with low threshold values that can be easily collected and guided, which promise a range of potential applications in remote sensing, information processing, and on-chip coherent light sources.
Structured metallic tips are increasingly important for optical spectroscopies such as tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), with plasmonic resonances frequently cited as a mechanism for electric field enhancement. We probe the local optical response of sharp and spherical-tipped atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips using a scanning hyperspectral imaging technique to identify plasmonic behaviour. Localised surface plasmon resonances which radiatively couple with far-field light are found only for spherical AFM tips, with little response for sharp AFM tips, in agreement with numerical simulatio…
This paper reports on the excitation of surface plasmons on gold-coated nanofibre tips by side-illumination with a laser beam and the coupling of the surface plasmons to the optical fiber. The measurements show a strong dependence of the coupling efficiency on the incidence angle with a maximum coupling efficiency on the order of few percent. Moreover, the fibre tip was used as scanning probe device for measuring the beam waist of a focussed laser beam. This work is motivated by the goal to use such plasmonic nanofibre tips in quantum optics experiments with cold atoms.
The concepts of spoof surface plasmon polaritons and adiabatic field compression are employed to design metallic near-field probes that allow guiding and focusing of mid-infrared wavelength electromagnetic radiation and provides subwavelength field confinements and a lateral optical resolution of about 10 nm.
Lateral two-dimensional (2D) transitional metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures have recently attracted a wide attention as promising materials for optoelectronic nanodevices. Due to the nanoscale width of lateral heterojunctions, the study of their optical properties is challenging and requires using subwavelength optical characterization techniques. We investigated the photoresponse of a lateral 2D WSe2/MoSe2 heterostructure using tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) with nanoscale spatial resolution and with picoscale tip-sample distance dependence. We demonstrate the observation of …
Metafibers expand the functionalities of conventional optical fibers to unprecedented nanoscale light manipulations by integrating metasurfaces on the fiber tips, becoming an emerging light-coupling platform for both nanoscience and fiber optics communities. Mostly exploring the isolated bare fibers, current metafibers remain as proof-of-concept demonstrations due to a lack of standard interfaces with the universal fiber networks. Here, we develop new methodologies to fabricate well-defined plasmonic metasurfaces directly on the end facets of commercial single mode fiber jumpers using standard…
Optical field localization at plasmonic tip-sample nanojunctions has enabled high spatial resolution chemical analysis through tip-enhanced linear optical spectroscopies, including Raman scattering and photoluminescence. Here, we illustrate that nonlinear optical processes, including parametric four-wave mixing (4WM), second harmonic/sum-frequency generation (SHG and SFG), and two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL), can be enhanced at plasmonic junctions and spatio-spectrally resolved simultaneously with few-nm spatial resolution under ambient conditions. More importantly, through a detailed anal…
A novel plasmonic THz fiber featuring two metallic wires in a porous dielectric cladding is studied for resonant sensing applications. In our design, introduction of even lossless analytes into the fiber core leads to significant changes in the modal losses, which is used as a transduction mechanism.
Controlling the propagation and polarization vectors in linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy enables to probe the anisotropy of optical responses providing structural symmetry selective contrast in optical imaging. Here we present a novel tilted antenna-tip approach to control the optical vector-field by breaking the axial symmetry of the nano-probe in tip-enhanced near-field microscopy. This gives rise to a localized plasmonic antenna effect with significantly enhanced optical field vectors with control of both \textit{in-plane} and \textit{out-of-plane} components. We use the resulting …
We demonstrate the key role of the laser injection into a multimode fiber to obtain a photonic jet (PJ). PJ, a high concentrated propagating beam with a full width at half maximum smaller than the diffraction limit, is here generated with a shaped optical fiber tip using a pulsed laser source (1064~nm, 100~ns, 35~kHz). Three optical injection systems of light are compared. For similar etched marks on silicon with diameters around 1~$μ$m, we show that the required ablation energy is minimum when the injected light beam is close to the fundamental mode diameter of the fiber. Thus, we confirm exp…
We investigate surface modes in plasmonic Bragg fibers composed of nanostructured coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers. We demonstrate that the existence of surface modes is determined by the sign of the spatially averaged permittivity of the plasmonic Bragg fiber, $\bar{% \varepsilon}$. Specifically, localized surface modes occur at the interface between the cylindrical core with $\bar{\varepsilon}<0$ and the outermost uniform dielectric medium, which is similar to the topologically protected plasmonic surface modes at the interface between two different one-dimensional planar met…
A waveguide structure consisting of a tapered nanofiber on a metal film is proposed and analyzed to support highly localized hybrid plasmonic modes. The hybrid plasmonic mode can be efficiently excited through the in-line tapered fiber based on adiabatic conversion and collected by the same fiber, which is very convenient in the experiment. Due to the ultrasmall mode area of plasmonic mode, the local electromagnetic field is greatly enhanced in this movable waveguide, which is potential for enhanced coherence light emitter interactions, such as waveguide quantum electrodynamics, single emitter…
In atomically thin semiconductors, localized exciton (X$_L$) coupled to light shows single quantum emitting behaviors through radiative relaxation processes providing a new class of optical sources for potential applications in quantum communication. In most studies, however, X$_L$ photoluminescence (PL) from crystal defects has mainly been observed in cryogenic conditions because of their sub-wavelength emission region and low quantum yield at room temperature. Furthermore, engineering the radiative relaxation properties, e.g., emission region, intensity, and energy, remained challenging. Her…
We demonstrate the digital electric field induced switching of plasmonic nanorods between 1 and 0 orthogonal aligned states using an electro-optic fluid fiber component. We show by digitally switching the nanorods, that thermal rotational diffusion of the nanorods can be circumvented, demonstrating an approach to achieve submicrosecond switching times. We also show, from an initial unaligned state, that the nanorods can be aligned into the applied electric field direction in 110 nanoseconds. The high-speed digital switching of plasmonic nanorods integrated into an all-fiber optical component m…
The optical transmission and reflection in between two metalized optical fiber tips is studied in the optical near-field and far-field domains. Besides aluminum-coated tips for near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), specifically developed gold-coated fiber tips cut by focused ion beam (FIB) are investigated. Transverse transmission maps of sub-wavelength width clearly evidence optical near-field coupling between the tips for short tip distances and becomes essentially Gaussian-shaped for larger distances in the far-field regime. Moreover concentric reflection fringes observed for NSOM-…
Strong light-matter interaction and high-efficiency optical collection of fluorescence from quantum emitters are crucial topics in quantum and nanophotonic fields. High-quality cavities, dispersive photonic crystal waveguides and even plasmonic structures have been used to enhance the interaction with quantum emitters, thus realize efficient collection of the fluorescence. In this work, a new method is proposed to collect the fluorescence of quantum dots (QDs) with a fiber-integrated multimode silver nanowire (AgNW) waveguide. Fluorescence lifetime measurement is performed to investigate the c…
An original optical tweezers using one or two chemically etched fiber nano-tips is developed. We demonstrate optical trapping of 1 micrometer polystyrene spheres at optical powers down to 2 mW. Harmonic trap potentials were found in the case of dual fiber tweezers by analyzing the trapped particle position fluctuations. The trap stiffness was deduced using three different models. Consistent values of up to 1 fN/nm were found. The stiffness linearly decreases with decreasing light intensity and increasing fiber tip-to-tip distance.
Light-matter interactions are often considered governed by the electric optical field only, leaving aside the magnetic component of light. However, the magnetic part plays a determining role in many optical processes from light and chiral-matter interactions, photon-avalanching to forbidden photochemistry, making the manipulation of magnetic processes extremely relevant. Here, by creating a standing wave using a plasmonic nanomirror we manipulate the spatial distributions of the electric and magnetic fields and their associated local density of states, allowing the selective control of the exc…
All surface plasmon resonance (SPR) devices on single-mode optical fibers' (SMF) end facets, as reported up to date, are limited by severely broad and shallow resonance spectra. The consequent poor performance when they are used as refractive index sensors, together with the challenge of nanofabrication on fiber end facets, has prohibited the development of such devices for label-free biosensing. Meanwhile, the planewave coupled, multimode fiber and fiber sidewall SPR counterparts are extensively employed for label-free biosensing. In this paper, we report the design, fabrication and character…
Structured light have made deep impacts on modern biotechnology and clinical practice, with numerous optical systems and lasers currently being used in medicine to treat disease. We demonstrate a new concept of fiber-based optical hook scalpel. The subwavelength photonic hook is obtained in the vicinity of a shaped fiber tip with asymmetric radiation. A 1550 nm continuous-wave source, commonly used for medical imaging, has been required. Photonic hook with a lateral feature size less than the half-wavelength is achieved using a hemispherical shaped fiber tip with metallic mask. This breakthrou…
We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that in fiber tips as they are used in NSOMs azimuthally polarized electrical fields (|E$_{\text{azi}}$|$^2$/|E$_{\text{tot}}$|$^2$ $\approx$ 55% $\pm $ 5% for 1.4μm tip aperture diameter and λ$_0$ = 1550nm), respectively subwavelength confined (FWHM $\approx$ 450nm $\approx$ λ$_0$/3.5) magnetic fields, are generated for a certain tip aperture diameter (d = 1.4μm). We attribute the generation of this field distribution in metal-coated fiber tips to symmetry breaking in the bend and subsequent plasmonic mode filtering in the truncated conical taper.
We present a sensor capable of detecting solution-based nanoparticles using an optical fiber tip functionalized with a photonic crystal cavity. When sensor tips are retracted from a nanoparticle solution after being submerged, we find that a combination of convective fluid forces and optically-induced trapping cause an aggregation of nanoparticles to form directly on cavity surfaces. A simple readout of quantum dot photoluminescence coupled to the optical fiber shows that nanoparticle presence and concentration can be detected through modified cavity properties. Our sensor can detect both gold…
We demonstrate a simple and rapid epoxy-based method for transferring photonic crystal cavities to the facets of optical fibers. Passive Si cavities were measured via fiber taper coupling as well as direct transmission from the fiber facet. Active quantum dot containing GaAs cavities showed photoluminescence that was collected both in free space and back through the original fiber. Cavities maintain a high quality factor (2000-4000) in both material systems. This new design architecture provides a practical mechanically stable platform for the integration of photonic crystal cavities with macr…
We design a plasmonic fiber waveguide (PFW) composed of coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers in nanoscale, and constitute the corresponding dynamical equations describing the modes of propagation in the PFW with the Kerr nonlinearity in the dielectric layers. The physics is connected to the discrete matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equations, from which the highly confined ring-like solitons in scale of subwavelength are found both for the visible light and the near-infrared light in the self-defocusing condition. Moreover, the confinement could be further improved when increasing the …
Benefitting from the excellent characteristics such as low cytotoxicity, functionalization versatility, and tunable fluorescence, nanodiamonds (NDs) have shown enormous application potentials in the biomedical field. Herein, we proposed, for the first time to our best knowledge, to integrate NDs on a plasmonic interface constructed on a side-polished fiber using drop-casting method. The added NDs engineers the plasmonic interface towards improving the sensing field, thus enhancing the sensitivity, which, moreover, is significantly dependent on the number of drop-casting cycles (DCs) and the us…
Ultrafast lasers generating high repetition rate ultrashort pulses through various mode-locking methods can benefit many important applications including communication, materials processing, astronomical observation, etc. For decades, mode-locking based on dissipative four-wave-mixing (DFWM) has been fundamental in producing pulses with repetition rates on the order of gigahertz (GHz), where multiwavelength comb filters and long nonlinear components are elemental. Recently, this method has been improved using filter-driven DFWM, which exploits both the filtering and nonlinear features of silic…
In this work, we proposed a high resolution D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on gold grating. Gold grating is introduced to modulate the resonance wavelength and enhance the refractive index (RI) sensitivity. Structure parameters of PCF and gold grating are analyzed by finite element method (FEM) for optimizing the SPR sensor. The simulation results indicate that air hole pitch, air hole diameter and gold thickness and grating constant have little influence on the sensitivity of refractive index, which reduces the requirement of precise process…
We demonstrate spatially-resolved measurements of spontaneous and stimulated electron-photon interactions in nanoscale optical near fields using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CL), and photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). Specifically, we study resonant surface plasmon modes that are tightly confined to the tip apexes of an Au nanostar, enabling a direct correlation of EELS, CL, and PINEM on the same physical structure at the nanometer length scale. Complemented by numerical electromagnetic boundary-element method calculations, we …
We develop a theory for spontaneous decay of a quantum emitter (QE) situated near metal-dielectric structure supporting localized surface plasmons. If plasmon resonance is tuned close to the QE emission frequency, the emission is enhanced due to energy transfer from the QE to a localized plasmon mode followed by photon emission by plasmonic antenna. The emission rate is determined by intimate interplay between the plasmon coupling to radiation field and the Ohmic losses in metal. Here we develop plasmon Green's function approach that includes plasmon's interaction with radiation to obtain expl…
Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75 % from a tapered optical fiber to a carefully designed metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic …
A nanodiamond (ND) hosting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers is attached on the apex of an optical tip for near-field microscopy. Its fluorescence is used to launch surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in a thin polycrystalline gold film. It is shown that the quantum nature of the initial source of light is preserved after conversion to SPPs. This opens the way to a deterministic quantum plasmonics, where single SPPs can be injected at well-defined positions in a plasmonic device produced by top-down approaches.
Manufacturing end-of-fiber optical components able to realize optical functions ranging from a simple lens to more complex functions such as mode selective components is a decisive but \emph{a priori} complex task owing to the fiber core dimensions. Effective low cost methods allowing to grow polymer components by free-radical photopolymerization using the light coming out of the fiber have recently been reported. A novel phenomenological model of the photopolymerization process underlying is here given and used to simulate the polymer component growth in a three dimensional time-resolved mann…
Future wireless communication networks have to handle data rates of tens or even hundreds of Gbit/s per link, requiring carrier frequencies in the unallocated terahertz (THz) spectrum. In this context, seamless integration of THz links into existing fiber-optic infrastructures is of great importance to complement the inherent portability and flexibility advantages of wireless networks by the reliable and virtually unlimited capacity of optical transmission systems. On the technological level, this requires novel device and signal processing concepts for direct conversion of data streams betwee…
We demonstrate the generation of far-field propagating optical beams with a desired orbital angular momentum by using a smooth optical mode transformation between a plasmonic vortex and free space Laguerre-Gaussian modes. This is obtained by means of an adiabatically tapered gold tip surrounded by a spiral slit. The proposed physical model, backed up by the numerical study, brings about an optimized structure which is fabricated by using highly reproducible secondary electron lithography technique. Optical measurements of the structure excellently agree with the theoretically predicted far-fie…
We report high efficiency, miniaturized, ultra-fast coherent beam combining with 3D printed micro-optics directly on the tip of a multicore fiber bundle. The highly compact device foot-print (180 micron diameter) facilitates its incorporation into a minimally invasive ultra-thin nonlinear endoscope to perform two-photon imaging
We investigate the direct thermal emission spectrum of a plasmonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain of InSb nanoparticles as well as its far-field emission due to near-field scattering by a sharp tip as it is used in scattering type thermal microscopes. We discuss the measurability of the topological phase transition in such far-field and near-field experiments and highlight the signatures of the topological edge modes. We further discuss the impact of a substrate.
Confining light in extreme subwavelength scales is a tantalizing task. In this work, we report a study of individual plasmonic film-coupled nanostar resonators where plasmonic optical modes are trapped in ultrasmall volumes. Individual gold nanostars, separated from a flat gold film by a thin dielectric spacer layer, exhibit a strong light confinement within the sub-10 nm volume of the nanostar's tips and the film. Through dark field scattering measurements of many individual nanostars, a statistical observation of the scattered spectra is obtained and compared with extensive simulation data t…
We theoretically investigate equilibrium behaviors and photothermal effects of a flexible plasmonic metamaterial composed of aramid nanofibers and gold nanoparticles. The fiber matrix is considered as an external field to reconfigure a nanoparticle assembly. We find that the heating process tunes particle-particle and fiber-particle interactions, which alter adsorption of nanoparticles on fiber surfaces or clustering in pore spaces. Thus, it is possible to control the nanoparticle self-assembly by laser illumination. Gold nanoparticles strongly absorb radiations and efficiently dissipate absor…
We present an ultra-thin hybrid imaging system based on an optical multimode fiber (MMF) and an optical fiber hydrophone that combines optical resolution photoacoustic and fluorescence microscopy. To control the illumination at the distal tip of the MMF, a digital micromirror device modulates the amplitude of the optical wavefront which is coupled into the MMF. A set of pre-calibrated speckle illuminations combined with a reconstruction algorithm enables photoacoustic and fluorescence imaging of samples located at the distal tip of the fiber with optical resolution determined by the numerical …
We present a novel design that exploits the focusing properties of scattering media to increase the resolution and the working distance of multimode fiber based imaging devices. Placing a highly scattering medium in front of the distal tip of the multimode fiber enables the formation of smaller sized foci at increased working distances away from the fiber tip. We perform a parametric study of the effect of the working distance and the separation between the fiber and the scattering medium on the focus size. We experimentally demonstrate submicron focused spots as far away as 800μm with 532nm l…
Plasmonic nano-antennas have proven the outstanding ability of sensing chemical and physical processes down to the nano-meter scale. Sensing is usually achieved within the highly confined optical fields generated resonantly by the nano-antennas, i.e. in contact to the nano-structures. In these paper, We demonstrate the sensing capability of nano-antennas to their larger scale environment, well beyond their plasmonic confinement volume, leading to the concept of 'remote' (non contact) sensing on the nano-meter scale. On the basis of a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) integrated at the apex of…
We present a robust, fiber based endoscope with a silver direct-laser-written (DLW) structure for radio frequency (RF) emission next to the optical fiber facet. Thereby, we are able to excite and probe a sample, such as nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, with RF and optical signals simultaneously and specifically measure the fluorescence of the sample fully through the fiber. At our targeted frequency-range around 2.9 GHz the facet of the fiber-core is in the near-field of the RF-guiding silver-structure, which comes with the advantage of an optimal RF-intensity decreasing rapidly with …
A wavelength-tunable Optical Fiber Tweezer (OFT) based on a Graded Index Multimode Fiber (GIMF) with a flat endface is proposed. It is shown that the design can support a trapping position which is far from the tip of the GIMF compared with other common optical tweezing methods, hence reducing the possibility of a contact between the trapped particle and the fiber tip. Moreover, because of the wavelength dependence of the GIMF design parameters such the Numerical Aperture (NA), the trapping position can become wavelength-dependent. Therefore, the trapping position can be tuned over a long rang…
Leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin gold film demonstrates the ability of an ensemble of fluorescent diamond nanoparticles attached onto the apex of an optical tip to serve as an efficient near-field surface-plasmon polariton launcher. The implementation of the nanodiamond-based tip in a near-field scanning optical microscope will allow for an accurate control on the launching position, thereby opening the way to scanning plasmonics.
We demonstrate a simple scheme for high-resolution imaging of nanoplasmonic structures that basically removes most of the resolution limiting allowed light usually transmitted to the far field. This is achieved by implementing a Fourier lens in a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) operating in the leakage-radiation microscopy (LRM) mode. The method consists of reconstructing optical images solely from the plasmonic `forbidden' light collected in the Fourier space. It is demonstrated by using a point-like nanodiamond-based tip that illuminates a thin gold film patterned with a sub-wa…
Optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) provides an additional dimension for photons to carry information in high-capacity optical communication. Although the practical needs have intrigued the generations of miniaturized devices to manipulate the OAM modes in various integrated platforms, the on-chip OAM detection is still challenging to match the newly-developed compact OAM emitter and OAM transmission fiber. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-compact device, i.e., a single plasmonic nanohole, to efficiently measure an optical beam's OAM state in a nondestructive way. The device size is reduced do…
Highly nonlinear optical processes, such as multiphoton photoemission, require high intensities, typically achieved with ultrashort laser pulses and, hence, were first observed with the advent of picosecond laser technology. An alternative approach for reaching the required field intensities is offered by localized optical resonances such as plasmons. Here, we demonstrate localized multiphoton photoemission from plasmonic nanostructures under continuous-wave illumination. We use synthesized plasmonic gold nanostars, which exhibit sharp tips with structural features smaller than 5 nm, leading t…
