We present the results of experimental studies of photon-negative ion interactions involving the dynamics of two electrons. Resonances associated with doubly excited states of Li^- and He^- have been observed using laser photodetachment spectroscopy. Total and partial photodetachment cross sections have been investigated. In the former case, the residual atoms are detected irrespective of their excitation state, while in the latter case only those atoms in specific states are detected. This was achieved by the use of a state selective detection scheme based on the resonant ionization of the residual atoms. In addition, in the case of Li^- photodetachment, the threshold behavior of the Li(2 ^2P)+e^-(ks) partial cross section has been used to accurately measure the electron affinity of Li.
We present ab initio studies of photoelectron spectra for above threshold detachment (ATD) of F$^-$ anions in short, 1300 nm and 1800 nm laser pulses. We identify and assess the importance of electron rescattering in strong-field photodetachment of a negative ion through comparison with an analytic, Keldysh-type approach, demonstrating the capability of ab-initio computation in the challenging near-IR regime. We further assess the influence of the strong electron correlation on the photodetachment.
We propose to use the near-threshold electron scattering data for atoms to guide the reliable experimental determination of their electron affinities (EAs), extracted using the Wigner Threshold Law, from laser photodetachment threshold spectroscopy measurements. Data from the near-threshold electron elastic scattering from W, Te, Rh, Sb and Sn atoms calculated using our complex angular momentum method, wherein is embedded the electron-electron correlations and core polarization interaction, are used as illustrations. We conclude with a remark on the relativistic effects on the EA calculation f…
The first theoretical investigation on the inner-shell single-photodetachment from the Si- negative ion is presented. The partial and total cross sections, the photoelectron phaseshifts, and the parameters of angular anisotropy are calculated in the framework of Many-Body Theory for L-shell photodetachment from Si- ion in the experimentally accessible range of photon energies (7.5-14 Ry). Comparison is made between the calculations of the response of the ionic many-electron system Si- to an electromagnetic field at the different levels of approximation: the "frozen-field" Random Phase Approxim…
This article studies the photodetachment of a single electron anion near an attractive center. Both the differential and total photodetachment cross section are analysed. We obtain the electron flux crossing through a spherical detector centered at the force center using the semiclassical approximation. The closed-orbit theory gives the total cross section which contains a smooth background and an oscillatory part. Concrete calculations and discussions are carried out for two types of wave source: the $s$- and $p_z$-wave source. Photodetachment processes for three conditions are compared: an a…
Photodetachment of the outer-most electrons in few- and many-electron atomic systems is studied in the non-relativistic dipole approximation. Such a photodetachment is analyzed for the neutral atoms and positively charged atomic ions. We also investigate photodetachment of the outer-most electrons in the negatively charged atomic ions, including the negatively charged hydrogen ion. In all these cases we have derived the closed analytical formulas for the photodetachemnt cross-section(s) of the outer-most electrons.
We show the photodetachment cross sections of H near a metal surface can be modified using a weak static electric field. The modification is possible because the oscillatory part of the cross section near a metal surface is directly connected with the transit-time and the action of the detached-electron closed-orbit which can be changed systematically by varying the static electric field strength. Photodetachment cross sections for various photon energies and electric field values are calculated and displayed.
The photon-ion merged-beams technique was used at a synchrotron light source for measuring absolute cross sections of double and triple photodetachment of O$^{-}$ ions. The experimental photon energy range of 524-543 eV comprised the threshold for K-shell ionization. Using resolving powers of up to 13,000, the position, strength and width of the below-threshold 1s 2s2 2p6 2S resonance as well as the positions of the 1s 2s2 2p5 3P and 1s 2s2 2p5 1P thresholds for K-shell ionization were determined with high precision. In addition, systematically enlarged multi-configuration Dirac-Fock calculati…

We use the $R$-matrix with time-dependence method to study detachment from F$^-$ in circularly-polarized laser fields of infrared wavelength. By decomposing the photoelectron momentum distribution into separate contributions from detached $2p_1$ and $2p_{-1}$ electrons, we demonstrate that the detachment yield is distributed asymmetrically with respect to these initial orbitals. We observe the well-known preference for strong-field detachment of electrons that are initially counter-rotating relative to the field, and calculate the variation in this preference as a function of photoelectron ene…
We report on the first experimental observation of a new threshold behavior observed in the 5g partial channel in photodetachment of K-. It arises from the repulsive polarization interaction between the detached electron and the residual K(5g) atom, which has a large negative dipole polarizability. In order to account for the observation in the K(5g) channel, we have developed a semiclassical model that predicts an exponential energy dependence for the cross section. The measurements were made with collinear laser-ion beams and a resonance ionization detection scheme.
The interaction between the field emission resonance states and the photodetached electron in an electric field is studied by semiclassical theory. An analytical expression of the photodetachment cross section is derived in the framework. It is found that the Stark shifted image state modulates the photodetachment cross section by adding irregular staircase or smooth oscillation in the spectrum. When the photodetached electron is trapped in Stark shifted image potential well, the detachment spectrum displays an irregular staircase structure which corresponds to the modified Rydberg series. Whi…
Formation of electron vortices and momentum spirals in photodetachment of the H$^-$ anion driven by isolated ultrashort laser pulses of circular polarization or by pairs of such pulses (of either corotating or counterrotating polarizations) are analyzed under the scope of the strong-field approximation. It is demonstrated that the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) and helicity of each individual pulse can be used to actively manipulate and control the vortical pattern in the probability amplitude of photodetachment. Specifically, the two-dimensional mappings of probability amplitude can be rotated …
New approach to highly accurate calculations of the photodetachment cross-sections of the negatively charged hydrogen ions is developed. This effective, fast and numerically stable method is based on the use of the Rayleigh's formula for the spherical Bessel functions. Photodetachment cross-sections of the negatively charged hydrogen ion(s) ${}^{\infty}$H$^{-}$, ${}^{1}$H$^{-}$ (protium), ${}^{2}$H$^{-}$ (deuterium D$^{-}$) and ${}^{3}$H$^{-}$ (tritium T$^{-}$) are determined with the use of highly accurate, truly correlated, variational wave functions constructed for these ions. Our method al…
We analyse the experiment by Hultgren et al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 87}, 031404 (2013)] on orbital alignment and quantum beats in coherently excited atomic fine-structure manifolds produced by short-pulse laser photodetachment of C$^-$, Si$^-$ and Ge$^-$ negative ions, and derive a formula that describes the beats. Analysis of the experimental data enables us to extract the non-coherent background contribution for each species, and indicates the need for a full density matrix treatment of the problem.
Photodetachment cross-section $σ_{ph}(p_e)$ of the negatively charged hydrogen ion H$^{-}$ is determined with the use of highly accurate variational wave functions constructed for this ion. Photodetachment cross-sections of the H$^{-}$ ion are also studied for very small and very large values of the photo-electron momentum $p_e$. Maximum of this cross-section and its location have been evaluated to high accuracy. In particular, we have found that $[σ_{ph}(p_e)]_{\max} \approx$ 3.8627035742 $\cdot 10^{-17}$ $cm^2$ at $p_e \approx$ 0.113206(1) $a.u.$ Our method is based upon the Rayleigh's formu…
We provide the initial insight into the angle-differential photodetachment spectra of fullerene anions beyond the dipole approximation by utilizing a broadly used modelling of C$_{n}$. In the model, the C$_{n}$ cage is approximated by a spherical attractive potential of a certain inner radius, thickness and depth which binds an external electron, thereby turning into a C$_{n}^{-}$ anion. It is demonstrated in the framework of the utilized model, which a single-electron model in its essence, that the dipole and dipole-quadrupole approximations might get broken down in the angle-differential pho…

Experimental cross sections for $m$-fold photodetachment ($m=3-6$) of silicon anions via $K$-shell excitation and ionization were measured in the photon-energy range of 1830-1900 eV using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. All cross sections exhibit a threshold behavior that is masked by pre-threshold resonances associated with the excitation of a $1s$ electron to higher, either partly occupied or unoccupied atomic subshells. Results from multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations agree with the experimentally derived cross sections for photo-absorptio…
We study laser-assisted photodetachment time delays by attosecond pulse trains from the closed-shell negative ions F- and Cl-. We investigate the separability of the delay into two contributions: (i) the Wigner-like delay associated with one-photon ionization by the attosecond pulse train and (ii) the delay associated with exchange of an additional laser photon in the presence of the potential of the remaining target. Based on the asymptotic form of the wave packet, the latter term is expected to be negligible because the ion is neutralized leading to a vanishing laser-ion interaction with inc…
Within the Dirac- and Lorentz-bubble potential models an electronic structure of the doubly-charged negative ion has been studied by a variational method. It is shown that even in the first approximation of this method when a trial wave function of the two electrons is represented as a product of one-electron functions the total energy of the system is negative, a manifestation of the existence of a stable state of the doubly-charged negative ion in these models. The second electron affinity of C60 according to estimation is about 1 eV. The photodetachment cross sections of this ion have been …
We investigate orbital alignment dynamics within the valence shell of atoms in coherently excited $j=3/2,1/2$ fine-structure manifolds generated by short-pulse photodetachment of F$^-$, Cl$^-$ and Br$^-$ anions. Using Keldysh-type theory, we calculate the density matrix of the residual atoms generated by few-cycle pulses, whose elements determine the populations and coherence among the electronic states. Our calculations demonstrate that the degree of atomic coherence can be represented by a near universal function of the ratio between the pulse duration $\tildeτ_p$ and the beat period $τ_{j'j…
At high energies, single-photon photodetachment of alkali negative ions populates final states where both the ejected electron and the residual valence electron possess high angular momenta. The photodetached electron interacts strongly with the anisotropic core, and thus the partial cross sections for these channels display non-Wigner threshold behavior reflecting these large, and occasionally repulsive, interactions. Our fully quantum mechanical theoretical study enables a deeper interpretation of these partial cross sections. Comparisons of the behavior in different channels and between dif…
We apply the convergent close-coupling (CCC) formalism to analyse the processes of laser assisted electron impact ionisation of He, and the attosecond time delay in the photodetachment of the H^{-} ion and the photoionisation of He. Such time dependent atomic collision processes are of considerable interest as experimental measurements on the relevant timescale (attoseconds 10^{-18} s) are now possible utilising ultrafast and intense laser pulses. These processes in particular are furthermore of interest as they are strongly influenced by many-electron correlations. In such cases their theoret…
Absorption of infrared and visible radiation from stellar emission spectra by the negatively charged hydrogen ions H$^{-}$ is considered. The explicit formula for the photodetachment cross-section of the negatively charged hydrogen ion(s) is derived. Photodetachemnt cross-sections of the ${}^{\infty}$H$^{-}$, ${}^{3}$H$^{-}$ (or T$^{-}$), ${}^{2}$H$^{-}$ (or D$^{-}$) and ${}^{1}$H$^{-}$ ions are determined to high accuracy and for a large number of photo-electron momenta/energies. We introduce criteria which can be used to evaluate the overall quality of highly accurate wave functions of the h…
The cross section of dipole-magnetic photodisintegration of the negative hydrogen ion has been calculated within the framework of an effective-range theory. The dipole-magnetic cross section of photodetachment within the very narrow range of energy near the process threshold dominates over the dipole-electric one. It has been shown that in ultracold hydrogen plasma at temperatures below kT=3.29.10-4 K the dipole-magnetic photo-recombination becomes a main mechanism of electron capture by hydrogen atoms.
Closed analytical formulas are derived for the differential and total cross sections of the non-relativistic photoelectric effect in the three main classes of few-electron atomic systems: (1) neutral atoms and positively charged atomic ions which contain more than one bound electron, (2) negatively charged atomic ions, and (3) one-electron atoms and ions. Our procedure developed in this study is a combination of QED methods and results of the density functional theory obtained for atoms and ions. In all these systems the photoelectric effect is considered as photodetachment of the outer-most e…
One of the most important properties influencing the chemical behavior of an element is the energy released with the addition of an extra electron to the neutral atom, referred to as the electron affinity (EA). Among the remaining elements with unknown EA is astatine, the purely radioactive element 85. Astatine is the heaviest naturally occurring halogen and its isotope $^{211}$At is remarkably well suited for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. With the At$^-$ anion being involved in many aspects of current astatine labelling protocols, the knowledge of the electron affinity of this elem…
We present a novel ab-initio single-electron approach to correlated electron dynamics in strong laser fields. By writing the electronic wavefunction as a product of a marginal one-electron wavefunction and a conditional wavefunction, we show that the exact harmonic spectrum can be obtained from a single-electron Schrödinger equation. To obtain the one-electron potential in practice, we propose an adiabatic approximation, i.e. a potential is generated that depends only on the position of one electron. This potential, together with the laser interaction, is then used to obtain the dynamics of th…
We explore the escape geometry of four electrons a few eV above threshold following single-photon absorption from the ground state of Be. We find that the four electrons leave the atom on the vertices of a pyramid instead of a previously-predicted tetrahedron. To illustrate the physical mechanisms of quadruple ionization we use a momentum transferring attosecond collision scheme which we show to be in accord with the pyramid break-up pattern.
We generalize the one electron attosecond streaking camera to time-resolve the correlated two-electron escape dynamics during a collision process involving a deep core electron. The collision process is triggered by an XUV attosecond pulse and probed by a weak infrared field. The principle of our two-electron streak camera is that by placing the maximum of the vector potential of the probing field at the time of collision we get the maximum splitting of the inter-electronic angle of escape. We thus identify the time of collision.

And recent experimental advances in preparing ultrafast laser and electron pulses equipped molecular imaging with femtosecond time resolution. This Perspectives present an overview of versatile imaging methods of molecular dynamics. High-order harmonic generation imaging and photoelectron dif…
The importance of multi-electron dynamics during the tunnel ionization of a correlated quantum system is investigated. By comparison of the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) with the time-dependent configuration interaction singles approach (TDCIS), we demonstrate the importance of a multi-electron description of the tunnel ionization process especially for weakly confined quantum systems. Within this context, we observe that adiabatic driving by an intense light field can even enhance the correlations between still trapped electrons.
The attosecond ultrafast ionization dynamics of correlated two- or many-electron systems have, so far, been mainly addressed investigating atomic systems. In the case of single ionization, it is well known that electron-electron correlation modifies the ionization dynamics and observables beyond the single active electron picture, resulting in effects such as the Auger effect or shake-up/down and knock-up/down processes. Here, we extend these works by investigating the attosecond ionization of a molecular system involving correlated two-electron dynamics, as well as non-adiabatic nuclear dynam…
We theoretically study how time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy can be applied for imaging coherent electron dynamics in molecules. We consider a process in which a pump pulse triggers coherent electronic dynamics in a molecule by creating a valence electron hole. An ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) probe pulse creates a second electron hole in the molecule. Information about the electron dynamics is accessed by analyzing angular distributions of photoemission probabilities at a fixed photoelectron energy. We demonstrate that a rigorous theoretical analysis, which takes into…
The influence of inner electrons on the ionization dynamics in strong laser fields is investigated in a wavelength regime where the inner electron dynamics is usually assumed to be negligible. The role of inner electrons is of particular interest for the application of frozen-core approximations and pseudopotentials in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the single-active-electron (SAE) approximation in strong-field laser physics. Results of TDDFT and SAE calculations are compared with exact ones obtained by the numerical ab initio solution of the three-electron time-dependent…
