Modifying the photodetachment near a metal surface by a weak electric field

We show the photodetachment cross sections of H near a metal surface can be modified using a weak static electric field. The modification is possible because the oscillatory part of the cross section near a metal surface is directly connected with the transit-time and the action of the detached-electron closed-orbit which can be changed systematically by varying the static electric field strength. Photodetachment cross sections for various photon energies and electric field values are calculated and displayed.

Closed-orbit theory for photodetachment in a time-dependent electric field

The standard closed-orbit theory is extended for the photodetachment of negative ions in a time-dependent electric field. The time-dependent photodetachment rate is specifically studied in the presence of a single-cycle terahertz pulse, based on exact quantum simulations and semiclassical analysis. We find that the photodetachment rate is unaffected by a weak terahertz field, but oscillates complicatedly when the terahertz pulse gets strong enough. Observed photodetachment in parallel electric and magnetic fields

We investigate photodetachment from negative ions in a homogeneous 1.0-T magnetic field and a parallel electric field of approximately 10 V/cm. A theoretical model for detachment in combined fields is presented. Calculations show that a field of 10 V/cm or more should considerably diminish the Landau structure in the detachment cross section. The ions are produced and stored in a Penning ion trap and illuminated by a single-mode dye laser. We present preliminary results for detachment from S- showing qualitative agreement with the model. Future directions of the work are also discussed.

Photodetachment near a repulsive center

We study the total photodetachment cross section of H$^-$ near a repulsive center. An analytical formula for the photodetachment cross section is obtained using the standard closed-orbit theory and extending it to the energy range below the zero-field threshold. The formula is found to be accurate by comparing with an exact quantum calculation. A comparison with the photodetachment cross section in an effective homogeneous electric field is made, and we discuss the similarities and differences of the two systems.

What is the difference in the p-wave and s-wave photodetachment in an electric field?

By applying closed-orbit theory to an existing model, a simple formula is derived for the modulation function of s-wave photo-detachment in the presence of a static electric field. We then compare the s-wave modulation function with the p-wave modulation function. We show the maximums (minimums) in the s-wave modulation function correspond to the minimums (maximums) in the p-wave modulation function because of a phase difference of $π$ in their oscillations. Photodetachment near an attractive force center

This article studies the photodetachment of a single electron anion near an attractive center. Both the differential and total photodetachment cross section are analysed. We obtain the electron flux crossing through a spherical detector centered at the force center using the semiclassical approximation. The closed-orbit theory gives the total cross section which contains a smooth background and an oscillatory part. We present a detailed quantum mechanical treatment of the photodetachment of H$^{-}$ by a short laser pulse in the presence of crossed static electric and magnetic fields. Quantum over-barrier reflection effects manifested in the photodetachment cross sections

Photodetachment of H$^-$ near a potential barrier is studied. A new formula is presented for the cross sections induced by a barrier. The new formula describes two quantum effects near barrier tops. Modulation of Field Emission Resonance on photodetachment of negative ions on surface

The interaction between the field emission resonance states and the photodetached electron in an electric field is studied by semiclassical theory. An analytical expression of the photodetachment cross section is derived in the framework. Extreme correlation and repulsive interactions in highly excited atomic anions

At high energies, single-photon photodetachment of alkali negative ions populates final states where both the ejected electron and the residual valence electron possess high angular momenta. Dipole-Magnetic Photo-Recombination in Ultracold Hydrogen Plasma

The cross section of dipole-magnetic photodisintegration of the negative hydrogen ion has been calculated within the framework of an effective-range theory. The dipole-magnetic cross section of photodetachment within the very narrow range of energy near the process threshold dominates over the dipole-electric one. It has been shown that in ultracold hydrogen plasma at temperatures below kT=3.29.10-4 K the dipole-magnetic photo-recombination becomes a main mechanism of electron capture by hydrogen atoms.
