The forms of the invariant primitive tensors for the simple Lie algebras A_l, B_l, C_l and D_l are investigated. A new family of symmetric invariant tensors is introduced using the non-trivial cocycles for the Lie algebra cohomology. For the A_l algebra it is explicitly shown that the generic forms of these tensors become zero except for the l primitive ones and that they give rise to the l primitive Casimir operators. Some recurrence and duality relations are given for the Lie algebra cocycles. Tables for the 3- and 5-cocycles for su(3) and su(4) are also provided. Finally, new relations involving the d and f su(n) tensors are given.
We develop a method for finding the independent invariant tensors of a gauge theory. Our method uses a theorem relating invariant tensors and constant configurations in field space. We apply our method to an $SU(3)$ gauge theory with matter in the adjoint representation, and find the independent invariant tensors of this theory.
We outline an algorithm for construction of functional bases of absolute invariants under the rotation group for sets of rank 2 tensors and vectors in the Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. We will use our earlier results for symmetric tensors and add results for sets including antisymmetric tensors of rank 2. That allowed, in particular, constructing of functional bases of differential invariants for vector functions, in particular, of first-order invariants of Poincaré algebra (invariance algebra of Maxwell equations for vector potential).
The invariant theory of Killing tensors (ITKT) is extended by introducing the new concepts of covariants and joint invariants of (product) vector spaces of Killing tensors defined in pseudo-Riemannian spaces of constant curvature. The covariants are employed to solve the problem of classification of the orthogonal coordinate webs generated by non-trivial Killing tensors of valence two defined in the Euclidean and Minkowski planes. Illustrative examples are provided.
We prove a generalisation of the $ε$-property, namely that for any dimension and signature, a metric which is not characterised by its polynomial scalar curvature invariants, there is a frame such that the components of the curvature tensors can be arbitrary close to a certain "background". This "background" is defined by its curvature tensors: it is characterised by its curvature tensors and has the same polynomial curvature invariants as the original metric.
The Hall tensor emerges from the study of the Hall effect, an important magnetic effect observed in electric conductors and semiconductors. The Hall tensor is third order and three dimensional, whose first two indices are skew-symmetric. In this paper, we investigate the isotropic polynomial invariants of the Hall tensor by connecting it with a second order tensor via the third order Levi-Civita tensor. We propose a minimal isotropic integrity basis with 10 invariants for the Hall tensor. Furthermore, we prove that this minimal integrity basis is also an irreducible isotropic function basis of…
For piezoelectric tensors, Olive (2014) proposed a minimal integrity basis of 495 hemitropic invariants, which is also a functional basis. In this article, we construct a new functional basis of hemitropic invariants of piezoelectric tensors, using the approach of Smith and Zheng. By eliminating invariants that are polynomials in other invariants, we obtain a new functional basis with 260 polynomially irreducible hemitropic invariants. Thus, the number of hemitropic invariants in the new functional basis is substantially smaller than the number of invariants in a minimal integrity basis.
The Casimir operators of a Lie algebra are in one-to-one correspondence with the symmetric invariant tensors of the algebra. There is an infinite family of Casimir operators whose members are expressible in terms of a number of primitive Casimirs equal to the rank of the underlying group. A systematic derivation is presented of a complete set of identities expressing non-primitive symmetric tensors in terms of primitive tensors. Several examples are given including an application to an exceptional Lie algebra.
Third order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensors play an important role in physics and tensor representation theory. A minimal integrity basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensor has four invariants with degrees two, four, six and ten respectively. In this paper, we show that any minimal integrity basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensor is also an irreducible function basis of that tensor, and there is no polynomial syzygy relation among the four invariants of that basis, i.e., these four invariants are algebraically in…
In this paper, we present an eleven invariant isotropic irreducible function basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric tensor. This irreducible function basis is a proper subset of the Olive-Auffray minimal isotropic integrity basis of that tensor. The octic invariant and a sextic invariant in the Olive-Auffray integrity basis are dropped out. This result is of significance to the further research of irreducible function bases of higher order tensors.
In this paper, we study invariants of second order tensors in an $n$-dimensional flat Riemannian space. We define eigenvalues, eigenvectors and characteristic polynomials for second order tensors in such an $n$-dimensional Riemannian space and show that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials are real polynomial invariants of that tensor. Then we give minimal integrity bases for second order symmetric and antisymmetric tensors, respectively, and study their special cases in the Minkowski space and applications in electrodynamics, etc.
Representation theory provides a suitable framework to count and classify invariants in tensor models. We show that there are two natural ways of counting invariants, one for arbitrary rank of the gauge group and a second, which is only valid for large N. We construct bases of invariant operators based on the counting, and compute correlators of their elements. The basis associated with finite N diagonalizes the two-point function of the theory and it is analogous to the restricted Schur basis used in matrix models. We comment on future lines of investigation.
We argue that the invariant tensor field introduced in [1] is unique under the condition that the invariant spin field is unique, and thereby complete that part of the discussion in that paper.
Invariant tensors are states in the SU(2) tensor product representation that are invariant under the SU(2) action. They play an important role in the study of loop quantum gravity. On the other hand, perfect tensors are highly entangled many-body quantum states with local density matrices maximally mixed. Recently, the notion of perfect tensors recently has attracted a lot of attention in the fields of quantum information theory, condensed matter theory, and quantum gravity. In this work, we introduce the concept of an invariant perfect tensor (IPT), which is a $n$-valent tensor that is both i…
Third order tensors have wide applications in mechanics, physics and engineering. The most famous and useful third order tensor is the piezoelectric tensor, which plays a key role in the piezoelectric effect, first discovered by Curie brothers. On the other hand, the Levi-Civita tensor is famous in tensor calculus. In this paper, we study third order tensors and (third order) hypermatrices systematically, by regarding a third order tensor as a linear operator which transforms a second order tensor into a first order tensor, or a first order tensor into a second order tensor. For a third order …
The elasticity tensor is one of the most important fourth order tensors in mechanics. Fourth order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensors play a crucial role in the study of the elasticity tensors. In this paper, we present two isotropic irreducible functional bases of a fourth order three-dimensional symmetric and traceless tensor. One of them is the minimal integrity basis introduced by Smith and Bao in 1997. It has nine homogeneous polynomial invariants of degrees two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten, respectively. We prove that it is also an irreducible functi…
In this article we shall consider the tensor gauge fields which are possible to embed into the existing framework of generalized YM theory and therefore allows to construct the gauge invariant and metric independent forms in 2n+4 and 2n+2 dimensions. These new forms are analogous to the Pontryagin-Chern-Simons densities in YM gauge theory and to the corresponding series of densities in 2n+3 dimensions constructed recently in arXiv:1205.0027.
Real or complex tensor model observables, the backbone of the tensor theory space, are classical (unitary, orthogonal, symplectic) Lie group invariants. These observables represent as colored graphs, and that representation gives an handle to study their combinatorial, topological and algebraic properties. We give here an overview of the symmetric group-theoretic formulation of the enumeration of unitary and orthogonal invariant observables which turns out to bear a rich structure. From their counting formulae, one finds a correspondence with topological field theory on 2-cellular complexes th…
Vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy-momentum tensor for scalar and spinor fields is obtainted on the homogeneous space with $G$-invariant metrics using the orbits of coadjoint representation of Lie group and the generalized harmonic analysis.
Proceeding in analogy with su(n) work on lambda matrices and f- and d-tensors, this paper develops the technology of the Lie algebra g2, its seven dimensional defining representation gamma and the full set of invariant tensors that arise in relation thereto. A comprehensive listing of identities involving these tensors is given. This includes identities that depend on use of characteristic equations, especially for gamma, and a good body of results involving the quadratic, sextic and (the non-primitivity of) other Casimir operators of g2.
We build the general conformally invariant linear wave operator for a free, symmetric, second-rank tensor field in a d-dimensional ($d\geqslant 2$) metric manifold, and explicit the special case of maximally symmetric spaces. Under the assumptions made, this conformally invariant wave operator is unique. The corresponding conformally invariant wave equation can be obtained from a Lagrangian which is explicitly given. We discuss how our result compares to previous works, in particular we hope to clarify the situation between conflicting results.
The structure of r-fold tensor products of irreducible tame representations of the inductive limit U(\infty) of unitary groups U(n) are are described, versions of contragredient representations and invariants are realized on Bargmann-Segal-Fock spaces.
Tensor function representation theory is an essential topic in both theoretical and applied mechanics. For the elasticity tensor, Olive, Kolev and Auffray (2017) proposed a minimal integrity basis of 297 isotropic invariants, which is also a functional basis. Inspired by Smith's and Zheng's works, we use a novel method in this article to seek a functional basis of the elasticity tensor, that contains less number of isotropic invariants. We achieve this goal by constructing 22 intermediate tensors consisting of 11 second order symmetrical tensors and 11 scalars via the irreducible decomposition…
Invariant theory is concerned with functions that do not change under the action of a given group. Here we communicate an approach based on tensor networks to represent polynomial local unitary invariants of quantum states. This graphical approach provides an alternative to the polynomial equations that describe invariants, which often contain a large number of terms with coefficients raised to high powers. This approach also enables one to use known methods from tensor network theory (such as the matrix product state factorization) when studying polynomial invariants. As our main example, we …
We discuss the diagonalization problem of the Nijenhuis tensor in a class of Poisson-Nijenhuis structures defined on compact hermitian symmetric spaces. We study its action on the ring of invariant polynomials of a Thimm chain of subalgebras. The existence of $ϕ$-minimal representations defines a suitable basis of invariant polynomials that completely solves the diagonalization problem. We prove that such representations exist in the classical cases AIII, BDI, DIII and CI, and do not exist in the exceptional cases EIII and EVII. We discuss a second general construction that in these two cases …
We definitively solve the old problem of finding a minimal integrity basis of polynomial invariants of the fourth-order elasticity tensor C. Decomposing C into its SO(3)-irreducible components we reduce this problem to finding joint invariants of a triplet (a, b, D), where a and b are second-order harmonic tensors, and D is a fourth-order harmonic tensor. Combining theorems of classical invariant theory and formal computations, a minimal integrity basis of 297 polynomial invariants for the elasticity tensor is obtained for the first time.
We study invariant Nijenhuis $(1,1)$-tensors on a homogeneous space $G/K$ of a reductive Lie group $G$ from the point of view of integrability of a Hamiltonian system of differential equations with the $G$-invariant Hamiltonian function on the cotangent bundle $T^*(G/K)$. Such a tensor induces an invariant Poisson tensor $Π_1$ on $T^*(G/K)$, which is Poisson compatible with the canonical Poisson tensor $Π_{T^*(G/K)}$. This Poisson pair can be reduced to the space of $G$-invariant functions on $T^*(G/K)$ and produces a family of Poisson commuting $G$-invariant functions. We give, in Lie algebra…
Various tensor models have been recently shown to have the same properties as the celebrated Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. In this paper we study in detail the diagrammatics of two such SYK-like tensor models: the multi-orientable (MO) model which has an $U(N) \times O(N) \times U(N)$ symmetry and a quartic $O(N)^3$-invariant model whose interaction has the tetrahedral pattern. We show that the Feynman graphs of the MO model can be seen as the Feynman graphs of the $O(N)^3$-invariant model which have an orientable jacket. We then present a diagrammatic toolbox to analyze the $O(N)^3$-invarian…
Gauge-invariant treatments of the second-order cosmological perturbation in a four dimensional homogeneous isotropic universe are formulated without any gauge fixing. We have derived the Einstein equations in the case of the single perfect fluid without ignoring any modes. These equations imply that any types of mode-coupling arise due to the second-order effects of the Einstein equations.
We study the quadratic invariants of the elasticity tensor in the framework of its unique irreducible decomposition. The key point is that this decomposition generates the direct sum reduction of the elasticity tensor space. The corresponding subspaces are completely independent and even orthogonal relative to the Euclidean (Frobenius) scalar product. We construct a basis set of seven quadratic invariants that emerge in a natural and systematic way. Moreover, the completeness of this basis and the independence of the basis tensors follow immediately from the direct sum representation of the el…
$O(N)$ invariants are the observables of real tensor models. We use regular colored graphs to represent these invariants, the valence of the vertices of the graphs relates to the tensor rank. We enumerate $O(N)$ invariants as $d$-regular graphs, using permutation group techniques. We also list their generating functions and give (software) algorithms computing their number at an arbitrary rank and an arbitrary number of vertices. As an interesting property, we reveal that the algebraic structure which organizes these invariants differs from that of the unitary invariants. The underlying topolo…
We define what is a generic separating set of invariant functions (a.k.a. a weak functional basis) for tensors. We produce then two generic separating sets of polynomial invariants for 3D elasticity tensors, one made of 19 polynomials and one made of 21 polynomials (but easier to compute) and a generic separating set of 18 rational invariants. As a byproduct, a new integrity basis for the fourth-order harmonic tensor is provided.

In this paper, the problem of the identification of the symmetry class of a given tensor is asked. Contrary to classical approaches which are based on the spectral properties of the linear operator describing the elasticity, our setting is based on the invariants of the irreducible tensors appearing in the harmonic decomposition of the elasticity tensor [Forte-Vianello, 1996]. To that aim we first introduce a geometrical description of the space of elasticity tensors. This framework is used to derive invariant-based conditions that characterize symmetry classes. For low order symmetry classes,…
