We study the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) dynamics of an effective spectroscopic Hamiltonian describing the four coupled high frequency modes of CDBrClF. The IVR dynamics ensuing from nearly isoenergetic zeroth-order states, an edge (overtone) and an interior (combination) state, is studied from a state space diffusion perspective. A wavelet based time-frequency analysis reveals an inhomogeneous phase space due to the trapping of classical trajectories. Consequently the interior state has a smaller effective IVR dimension as compared to the edge state.
Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution from a high frequency mode in the presence of an internal rotor: Classical thick-layer diffusion and quantum localization
Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) impacts the dynamics of reactions in a profound way. Theoretical and experimental studies are increasingly indicating that accounting for the finite rate of energy flow is critical for uncovering the correct reaction mechanisms and calculating accurate rates. This requires an explicit understanding of the influence and interplay of the various anharmonic (Fermi) resonances that lead to the coupling of the vibrational modes. In this regard, the local random matrix theory (LRMT) and the related Bose-statistics triangle rule (BSTR) model have…
Vibrational coupling is relevant not only for dissipation of excess energy after chemical reactions but also for elucidating molecular structure and dynamics. It is particularly important for OH stretch vibrational spectra of water, for which it is known that in bulk both intra- and intermolecular coupling alter the intensity and line shape of the spectra. In contrast with bulk, the unified picture of the inter/intra-molecular coupling of OH groups at the water-air interface has been lacking. Here, combining sum-frequency generation experiments and simulation for isotopically diluted water and…
The intramolecular vibrational relaxation dynamics of formic acid and its deuterated isotopologues is simulated on the full-dimensional potential energy surface of Richter and Carbonniere [F. Richter and P. Carbonniere, J. Chem. Phys., 148, 064303 (2018)] using the Heidelberg MCTDH package. Mode couplings with the torsion coordinate capturing most of the trans-cis isomerisation are identified in the dynamics of artificially excited vibrational mode overtones. The C-O stretch bright vibrational mode is coupled to the out-of-the plane torsion mode in HCOOH, where this coupling could be exploited…
While the emerging field of vibrational polariton chemistry has the potential to overcome traditional limitations of synthetic chemistry, the underlying mechanism is not yet well understood. Here, we explore how the dynamics of unimolecular dissociation reactions that are rate-limited by intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) can be modified inside an infrared optical cavity. We study a classical model of a bent triatomic molecule, where the two outer atoms are bound by anharmonic Morse potentials to the center atom coupled to a harmonic bending mode. We show that an optical ca…

We report a fully quantum-dynamical study of the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) in the electronic ground state of carbonyl sulfide (OCS), which is a prototype of an isolated many-body quantum system with strong internal couplings and non-Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) behavior. We pay particular attention to the role of many-body localization and the approach to thermalization, which currently are topics of considerable interest, as they pertain to the very foundations of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. We employ local-mode (valence) coordinates and cons…

The vibrational motion of molecules in dissipative environments, such as solvation and protein molecules, is composed of contributions from both intermolecular and intramolecular modes. The existence of these collective modes introduces difficulty into quantum simulations of chemical and biological processes. In order to describe the complex molecular motion of the environment in a simple manner, we introduce a system-bath model in which the intramolecular modes with anharmonic mode-mode couplings are described by a system Hamiltonian, while the other degrees of freedom, arising from the envir…
We report the first coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrational modes via the nonlinear interaction of a TeraHertz (THz) light field with molecular liquids. A terahertz-terahertz-Raman pulse sequence prepares the coherences with a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond terahertz pulse, that are then measured in a terahertz Kerr effect spectrometer via phase-sensitive, heterodyne detection with an optical pulse. The spectrometer reported here has broader terahertz frequency coverage, and an increased sensitivity relative to previously reported terahertz Kerr effect experiments. Vibration…
Intermolecular vibrational energy redistribution in DCO (X^2A'): Classical-Quantum correspondence, dynamical assignments of highly excited states, and phase space transport
Recent experiments and theory demonstrate that the the ground state properties and chemical reactivity of molecules can be modified inside an optical cavity. The vibrational strong or ultrastrong coupling results in the formation of vibrational polaritons which are usually observed through infrared spectra (IR). Here, we provide a theoretical framework to conduct multidimensional quantum simulations of the infrared spectra when the molecule is interacting with cavity modes. Taking single water molecule as an example, combing with accurate potential energy and dipole moment surfaces, our implem…
Statistical models provide a powerful and useful class of approximations for calculating reaction rates by bypassing the need for detailed, and often difficult, dynamical considerations. Such approaches invariably invoke specific assumptions about the extent of intramolecular vibrational energy flow in the system. However, the nature of the transition to the statistical regime as a function of the molecular parameters is far from being completely understood. Here, we use tools from nonlinear dynamics to study the transition to statisticality in a model unimolecular reaction by explicitly visul…
Molecular polaritons have become an emerging platform for remotely controlling molecular properties through strong light-matter interactions. Herein, a semiclassical approach is developed for describing molecular polaritons by self-consistently propagating the real-time dynamics of classical cavity modes and a quantum molecular subsystem described by the nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) method, where electrons and specified nuclei are treated quantum mechanically on the same level. This semiclassical real-time NEO approach provides a unified description of electronic and vibrational strong cou…
Representation of molecular vibrational degrees of freedom by independent harmonic oscillators, when describing electronic spectra or electronic excitation energy transport, raises unfavourable effects as vibrational energy relaxation becomes inaccessible. A standard theoretical description is extended in this paper by including both electronic-phonon and vibrational-phonon couplings. Using this approach we have simulated a model pigment-protein system and have shown that intermode coupling leads to the quenching of pigment vibrational modes, and to the redistribution of fluctuation spectral d…

We have developed a non-Markovian theory of the polariton luminescence taking the molecular vibrations into account. The calculations were made in the polariton basis. We have shown that the frequency shift and the polariton spectral lines broadening strongly depend on the frequency-dependent exciton contribution to the polariton. In the single-mode microcavity our non-Markovian theory predicts the Fano resonances in the polariton luminescence, and also narrowing of the spectral lines with the increase of the total number of molecules in the case of the intramolecular nature of the low frequen…
Thermal transport through nanosystems is central to numerous processes in chemistry, material sciences, electrical and mechanical engineering, with classical molecular dynamics as the key simulation tool. Here we focus on thermal junctions with a molecule bridging two solids that are maintained at different temperatures. The classical steady state heat current in this system can be simulated in different ways, either at the interfaces with the solids, which are represented by thermostats, or between atoms within the conducting molecule. We show that while the latter, intramolecular definition …
We address the double hydrogen transfer (DHT) dynamics of the porphycene molecule: A complex paradigmatic system where the making and breaking of H-bonds in a highly anharmonic potential energy surface requires a quantum mechanical treatment not only of the electrons, but also of the nuclei. We combine density-functional theory calculations, employing hybrid functionals and van der Waals corrections, with recently proposed and optimized path-integral ring-polymer methods for the approximation of quantum vibrational spectra and reaction rates. Our full-dimensional ring-polymer instanton simulat…
Time-resolved XUV-IR photoion mass spectroscopy of naphthalene conducted with broadband, as well as with wavelength-selected narrowband XUV pulses reveals a rising probability of fragmentation characterized by a lifetime of $92\pm4$~fs. This lifetime is independent of the XUV excitation wavelength and is the same for all low appearance energy fragments recorded in the experiment. Analysis of the experimental data in conjunction with a statistical multi-state vibronic model suggests that the experimental signals track vibrational energy redistribution on the potential energy surface of the grou…
Frequency-domain two-dimensional Raman signals, which are equivalent to coherent two-dimensional Raman scattering (COTRAS) signals, for liquid water and carbon tetrachloride were calculated using an equilibrium-nonequilibrium hybrid MD simulation algorithm. We elucidate mechanisms governing the 2D signal profiles involving anharmonic mode-mode coupling and the nonlinearities of the polarizability for the intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes. The predicted signal profiles and intensities can be utilized to analyze recently developed single-beam 2D spectra, whose signals are gener…
In this work we study the competition and correspondence between the classical and quantum routes to intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) in a three degrees of freedom model effective Hamiltonian. Specifically, we focus on the classical and the quantum dynamics near the resonance junctions on the Arnold web that are formed by intersection of independent resonances. The regime of interest models the IVR dynamics from highly excited initial states near dissociation thresholds of molecular systems wherein both classical and purely quantum, involving dynamical tunneling, routes t…
We present a novel {\em ab initio} approach for computing intramolecular charge and energy transfer rates based upon a projection operator scheme that parses out specific internal nuclear motions that accompany the electronic transition. Our approach concentrates the coupling between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom into a small number of reduced harmonic modes that can be written as linear combinations of the vibrational normal modes of the molecular system about a given electronic minima. Using a time-convolutionless master-equation approach, parameterized by accurate quantum-ch…
The structure and vibrational density of states (VDOS) of polymer glasses are investigated using numerical simulations based on the classical Kremer-Grest bead-spring model. We focus on the roles of chain length and bending stiffness, the latter being set by imposing three-body angular potentials along chain backbones. Upon increasing the chain length and bending stiffness, structural reorganisation leads to volumetric expansion of the material and build-up of internal stresses. The VDOS has two dominant bands: a low frequency one corresponding to inter- and intra-chain non-bonding interaction…
We report two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) experiments on the bacterial reaction center (BRC) from purple bacteria, revealing hidden excitonic and vibronic structure. Through analysis of the coherent dynamics of the BRC we resolve specific coherent signatures that allow us to definitively assign the upper exciton energy of the "special pair." This assignment is supported by simulations of coherent dynamics of a reduced excitonic model of the BRC. The simulations also identify nonsecular vibronic coherence transfer processes neglected in standard models of photosynthetic energy tr…
Selected resonance states of the deuterated formyl radical in the electronic ground state ($\widetilde{X}\,{}^2A'$) are computed using our recently introduced dynamically pruned discrete variable representation (DP-DVR) [H. R. Larsson, B. Hartke and D. J. Tannor, J. Chem. Phys., 145, 204108 (2016)]. Their decay and asymptotic distributions are analyzed and, for selected resonances, compared to experimental results obtained by a combination of stimulated emission pumping (SEP) and velocity-map imaging of the product D atoms. The theoretical results show good agreement with the experimental kine…
