Understanding how the effectiveness of natural photosynthetic energy harvesting systems arises from the interplay between quantum coherence and environmental noise represents a significant challenge for quantum theory. Recently it has begun to be appreciated that discrete molecular vibrational modes may play an important role in the dynamics of such systems. As an alternative to computationally demanding numerical approaches, we present a microscopic mechanism by which intramolecular vibrations contribute to the efficiency and directionality of energy transfer. Excited vibrational states create resonant pathways through the system, supporting fast and efficient energy transport. Vibrational damping together with the natural downhill arrangement of molecular energy levels gives intrinsic directionality to the energy flow. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate a significant enhancement of the efficiency and directionality of energy transport that can be directly related to the existence of resonances between vibrational and excitonic levels.
Vibrational-electronic (vibronic) resonance and its role in energy and charge transfer has been experimentally and theoretically investigated in several photosynthetic proteins. Using a dimer modeled on a typical photosynthetic protein, we contrast the description of such excitons provided by an exact basis set description, as opposed to a basis set with reduced vibrational dimensionality. Using a reduced analytical description of the full Hamiltonian, we show that in the presence of vibrational excitation both on electronically excited as well as unexcited sites, constructive interference bet…

Environment-Assisted Quantum Walks in Photosynthetic Energy Transfer
Photosynthesis has been a long-standing research interest due to its fundamental importance. Recently, studies on photosynthesis processes also have inspired attention from a thermodynamical aspect when considering photosynthetic apparatuses as biological quantum heat engines. Quantum coherence is shown to play a crucial role in enhancing the performance of these quantum heat engines. Based on the experimentally reported structure, we propose a quantum heat engine model with a non-Markovian vibrational mode. We show that one can obtain a performance enhancement easily for a wide range of param…
Dependence of energy relaxation and vibrational coherence on the location of light-harvesting chromoproteins in photosynthetic antenna protein complexes
Photosynthetic organisms use networks of chromophores to absorb sunlight and deliver the energy to reaction centres, where charge separation triggers a cascade of chemical steps to store the energy. We present a detailed model of the light-harvesting complexes in purple bacteria, including explicit interaction with sunlight; energy loss through radiative and non-radiative processes; and dephasing and thermalizing effects of coupling to a vibrational bath. An important feature of the model is that we capture the effect of slow vibrational modes by introducing time-dependent disorder. Our model …
Oscillations in time-dependent 2D electronic spectra appear as evidence of quantum coherence in light-harvesting systems related to electronic-vibrational resonant interactions. Nature, however, takes place in a non-equilibrium steady-state, so the relevance of these arguments to the natural process is unclear. Here we examine the role of intramolecular vibrations in the non-equilibrium steady-state of photosynthetic dimers in the natural scenario of incoherent light excitation. It is found that vibrations resonant with the energy difference between exciton states do not increase the quantum y…
We study the interplay between two environmental influences on excited state energy transfer in photosynthetic light harvesting complexes, namely, vibrationally assisted energy transfer (VAET) and environment-assisted quantum transport (ENAQT), considering a dimeric chromophore donor-acceptor model as a prototype for larger systems. We demonstrate how the basic features of the excitonic energy transfer are influenced by these two environments, both separately and together, with the environment being fully quantum in the case of VAET and treated in the Haken-Strobl-Reineker classical limit in t…
We investigate how collective behaviors of vibrations such as cooperativity and interference can enhance energy transfer in a nontrivial way, focusing on an example of a donor-bridge-acceptor trimeric chromophore system coupled to two vibrational degrees of freedom. Employing parameters selected to provide an overall uphill energy transfer from donor to acceptor, we use numerical calculations of dynamics in a coupled exciton-vibration basis, together with perturbation-based analytics and calculation of vibronic spectra, we identify clear spectral features of single- and multi-phonon vibrationa…
We report two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) experiments on the bacterial reaction center (BRC) from purple bacteria, revealing hidden excitonic and vibronic structure. Through analysis of the coherent dynamics of the BRC we resolve specific coherent signatures that allow us to definitively assign the upper exciton energy of the "special pair." This assignment is supported by simulations of coherent dynamics of a reduced excitonic model of the BRC. The simulations also identify nonsecular vibronic coherence transfer processes neglected in standard models of photosynthetic energy tr…
Answering the titular question has become a central motivation in the field of quantum biology, ever since the idea was raised following a series of experiments demonstrating wave-like behavior in photosynthetic complexes. Here, we report a direct evaluation of the effect of quantum coherence on the efficiency of three natural complexes. An open quantum systems approach allows us to simultaneously identify their level of "quantumness" and efficiency, under natural physiological conditions. We show that these systems reside in a mixed quantum-classical regime, characterized by dephasing-assiste…
We present a detailed study of the conduction properties of a molecular wire where hopping processes between electronic sites are coupled to a vibrational mode of the molecule. The latter is sandwiched between two electronic leads at finite temperatures. We show that the electro-mechanical coupling can lead to a strong enhancement of the lead-to-lead conduction. Moreover, under suitable driving of the molecular vibrational mode, the device can act as a transistor passing sharply from enhanced conduction to short-circuit configuration.
Efficiency of energy funneling in the photosystem II supercomplex of higher plants
Transport of excitons through transfer networks is a unique example where the interplay between quantum coherence and environment-induced dephasing leads to non-trivial effects. One exciting example is the "environment-assisted quantum transport", (ENAQT), where, counter intuitively, the environment interrupts quantum transport in a way that enhances the transfer efficiency. Here we show that the interplay between dephasing and quantum coherence can lead to an additional function in exciton transport - photo-protection, that is the reduction of current upon increased excitation. We start by de…
It is shown that quantum sustainability is a universal phenomenon which emerges during environment-assisted electronic excitation energy transfer (EET) in photobiological complexes (PBCs), such as photosynthetic reaction centers and centers of melanogenesis. We demonstrate that quantum photobiological systems must be sustainable for them to simultaneously endure continuous energy transfer and keep their internal structure from destruction or critical instability. These quantum effects occur due to the interaction of PBCs with their environment which can be described by means of the reduced den…
