We present a \emph{Mathematica} notebook allowing for the symbolic calculation of the $3\times3$ dielectric tensor of a electron-beam plasma system in the fluid approximation. Calculation is detailed for a cold relativistic electron beam entering a cold magnetized plasma, and for arbitrarily oriented wave vectors. We show how one can elaborate on this example to account for temperatures, arbitrarily oriented magnetic field or a different kind of plasma.
The dielectric permeability tensor for spin polarized plasmas is derived in terms of the spin-1/2 quantum kinetic model in six-dimensional phase space. Expressions for the distribution function and spin distribution function are derived in linear approximations on the path of dielectric permeability tensor derivation. The dielectric permeability tensor is derived the spin-polarized degenerate electron gas. It is also discussed at the finite temperature regime, where the equilibrium distribution function is presented by the spin-polarized Fermi-Dirac distribution. Consideration of the spin-pola…
In the present work, the significance of various components (ground electrode material and its surface (knurling pitch size), power electrode material and type, and dielectric material) of dielectric barrier discharge plasma device (DBD-PD) on plasma and plasma-activated water (PAW) properties are studied. The characterization of plasma is performed by studying voltage-current waveform and plasma discharge power. In addition, the characterization of PAW is performed by studying the physicochemical properties (PP) and reactive oxygennitrogen species (RONS) concentration. The results of plasma c…
A microphysics model to describe the photoionization and impact ionization processes in dielectric ablator materials like plastic has been implemented into the one-dimensional hydrodynamic code LILAC for planar and spherical targets. At present, the initial plasma formation during the early stages of a laser drive is modeled in an ad hoc manner, until the formation of a critical surface. Implementation of the physics-based models predicts higher values of electron temperature and pressure than the ad hoc model. Moreover, the numerical predictions are consistent with previous experimental obser…

Transverse electric conductivity and dielectric permeability in quantum degenerate collisional plasma with variable collision frequency in Mermin's approach
Second-harmonic emission at a frequency that is twice the laser frequency is an important diagnostic for nonlinear laser-plasma interaction. It is forbidden for centrosymmetric materials such as the bulk of sapphire. The symmetry, however, can be broken by dielectric discontinuities as a result of plasma generation inside a solid dielectric. In the present work, we explore the basic characteristics of experimentally observed second-harmonic emission during focusing a femtosecond Bessel beam inside sapphire. We employ three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and the Helmholtz wave equatio…
Transverse electric conductivity and dielectric permeability in quantum non-degenerate and maxwellian collisional plasma with variable collision frequency in Mermin's approach
Electromagnetic radiation within the terahertz (THz) frequency range is of great interest for applications in remote sensing and time-domain spectroscopy. The laser-induced plasmas are promising mediums for generating THz radiation. It has been recently reported that focusing femtosecond Bessel pulses inside dielectrics induces a high aspect ratio over-critical plasmas. Here we show that the intense resonantly driven electrostatic fields at the so-called critical surface lead to THz radiation emission. Through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation and analytical derivation, we have inv…
We develop a universal framework which allows quickly solve a wide class of problems for longitudinal space charge effects in beams and plasmas in cylindrical geometry. We introduce the longitudinal dielectric permittivity for the beam of charged particles, which describes its collective space charge response. The analyis yields an effective plasma frequency, which depends on the transverse geometry of the system. This dielectric permittivity mirrors the dielectric permittivity of plasma and matches the one dimensional (1D) expression once the transverse size of the beam is large. Several part…
A linear theory of a wakefield excitation in a plasma-dielectric accelerating structure by a drive electron bunch in the case of an off-axis bunch injection has been constructed. The structure under investigation is a round dielectric-loaded metal waveguide with a channel for the charged particles, filled with homogeneous cold plasma. Derived theory was used to investigate numerically the spatial distribution of the bunch-excited wakefield components, which act on both the drive and witness bunches.
For a collisionless plasma in contact with a dielectric surface, where with unit probability electrons and ions are, respectively, absorbed and neutralized, thereby injecting electrons and holes into the conduction and valence band, we study the kinetics of plasma loss by nonradiative electron-hole recombination inside the dielectric. We obtain a self-consistently embedded electric double layer, merging with the quasi-neutral, field-free regions inside the plasma and the solid. After a description of the numerical scheme for solving the two sets of Boltzmann equations, one for the electrons an…
When propagating inside dielectrics, an ultrafast Bessel beam creates a high aspect-ratio cylinder of plasma with nanometric diameter that extends over several tens of micrometers to centimeters. We analyze the interaction between the intense ultrafast laser pulse and the plasma rod using particle-in-cell simulations. We show that electrons are heated and accelerated up to keV energies via transit acceleration inside the resonance lobes in the vicinity of the critical surface and compute their radiation pattern.
In this paper we derive the dielectric tensor for a plasma containing particles described by an anisotropic superthermal (bi-kappa) velocity distribution function. The tensor components are written in terms of the two-variables kappa plasma special functions, recently defined by Gaelzer and Ziebell [Phys. Plasmas 23, 022110 (2016)]. We also obtain various new mathematical properties for these functions, which are useful for the analytical treatment, numerical implementation and evaluation of the functions and, consequently, of the dielectric tensor. The formalism developed here and in the prev…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of positron bunch focusing when acceleration in a plasma dielectric wakefield accelerator. The wakefield was excited by drive electron bunch in quartz dielectric tube, embedded in cylindrical metal waveguide. The internal area of dielectric tube has been filled with radially homogeneous plasma having in general case the vacuum channel along waveguide axis. Results of numerical PIC simulation have shown that it is possible a simultaneous acceleration and focusing of test positron bunch in the wakefield. The dependence of transport and a…
The use of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas has become a practical way to carry out surface treatment and one seeks to do it in a more efficient way, which requires to have control of the plasma parameters like rotational and vibrational temperatures (T_rot and T_vib). Since the T_vib of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet is an important parameter related to improvement of surface treatments, in this work it was analyzed two methods to increase the values of T_vib in the DBD plasma. One of the methods is to reduce the exit size of the DBD reactor, and the other is to change the gas f…
In this work we studied processing of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in two different assemblies, one using the primary plasma jet obtained from a conventional DBD and the other using a DBD plasma jet transfer. The evolution of water contact angle (WCA) in function of plasma processing time and in function of aging time as well as the changes in the surface roughness of PDMS samples for both plasma treatments have been studied. We also compared vibrational and rotational temperatures for both plasmas and for the first time the vibrational…
The resolution of the Green's function for obtaining the electrostatic potential generated by the charges located in the dielectric layer of a rectangular waveguide requires efficient integration techniques. Due to the characteristics and the oscillatory nature of the function to be integrated, the use of the Filon's method together with a convergence analysis is adequate. However, the application of this numerical integration technique can lead to numerical instabilities in the result. For this reason, in this research work we have presented two different methods to deal with these numerical …
Packed bed plasma reactors (PBPRs) inherently have complex geometries where the volume between the electrodes is filled with dielectric/catalytic pellets to form an array of voids and cavities. This design generates multiple length scales i.e. the dimension of the plasma region (of the order of centimeters), of the dielectric/catalytic pellets (of the order of millimeters) and of the void between the dielectrics (or cavities) and/or surface pores that can reach micrometer dimensions. The plasma is formed as an array of connected or segmented microdischarges. The understanding of plasma propaga…
We propose to measure the surface charge accumulating at the interface between a plasma and a dielectric by infrared spectroscopy using the dielectric as a multi-internal reflection element. The surplus charge leads to an attenuation of the transmitted signal from which the magnitude of the charge can be inferred. Calculating the optical response perturbatively in first order from the Boltzmann equation for the electron-hole plasma inside the solid, we can show that in the parameter range of interest a classical Drude term results. Only the integrated surface charge enters, opening up thereby …
The plasma-liquid interaction is an important issue in plasma technology. The simulation of discharge in spherical bubbles in the water that produced plasma-activated water (PAW) is investigated using finite element methods (FEM) for a simulated 2D dielectric barrier discharge in three different geometries. The electron density changes with voltage, frequency, dielectric thickness, and bubble radius are investigated in different time duration. The results show that electron density increases linearly by increasing voltage, frequency and bubble radius, while it is vice versa for dielectric thic…
We present a self-consistent kinetic theory for the electronic response of a plasma-facing dielectric solid. Based on the Poisson equation and two sets of spatially separated Boltzmann equations, one for electrons and ions in the plasma and one for conduction band electrons and valence band holes in the dielectric, the approach gives the quasi-stationary density and potential profiles of the electric double layer forming at the interface due to the permanent influx of electrons and ions from the plasma. The two sets of Boltzmann equations are connected by quantum-mechanical matching conditions…
Applications of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) based atmospheric pressure plasma jets are often limited by the relatively small area of treatment due to their 1D configuration. This letter describes the first results demonstrating generation of 2D plasma bullets and 2D plasma jets permitting fast treatment of large targets. Imaging of pulsed DBD in He and ionization wave propagation along the dielectric surface show that DBD evolution starts with formation of transient anode glow, and only then continues with development of cathode-directed streamers. The anode glow can propagate as an ion…
New integral kernels describing the full-wave dielectric response of Maxwellian tokamak plasmas are presented. They realistically account for the rotational transform and for wave dispersion in presence of equilibrium magnetic field parallel gradients. These kernels rely on special functions of three variables that generalize the standard plasma dispersion function; their main analytical properties are given, leading to efficient evaluation. This approach is free from the poloidal Fourier mode expansion of the HF fields which appears in earlier formulations and gives complete freedom for the n…
The creation of high energy density ($\gtrsim10^6$ joules per cm$^3$) over-critical plasmas in a large volume has essential applications in the study of warm dense matter, being present in the hot cores of stars and planets. It was recently shown that femtosecond Bessel beams enable creating over-critical plasmas inside sapphire with sub-wavelength radius and several tens of micrometers in length. Here, the dependence of field structure and absorption mechanism on the plasma density transverse profile are investigated by performing self-consistent Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. Two { limi…
Dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) are commonly used to generate cold plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Whatever their configuration (tubular or planar), the presence of a dielectric barrier is mandatory to prevent too much charge build up in the plasma and the formation of a thermal arc. In this article, the role of the barrier thickness (2.0, 2.4 and 2.8 mm) and of the kind of dielectric material (alumina, mullite, pyrex, quartz) is investigated on the filamentary behavior in the plasma and on the CO2 conversion in a tubular flowing DBD, by means of mass spectrometry measurements correlated…
The spatiotemporal evolution of the field and plasma in the optical breakdown induced in the volume of transparent dielectric (fused silica) by the focused fs laser pulse is studied under condition of the so-called plasma-resonance-induced ionization instability that results in the deep small-scale periodic modulation of the breakdown plasma parameters in the direction of the laser polarization. In the framework of the model used, the optical electric field was calculated with allowance for the effects influencing both its long-scale structure (the beam focusing accounted for in the given-ray-…
A one dimensional Vlasov Poisson simulation code is employed to investigate the plasma sheath considering electron induced secondary electron emission (SEE) and backscattering. The SEE coefficient is commonly treated as constant in a range of plasma simulations, here improved SEE model of a charged dielectric wall is constructed which includes the wall charging effect on SEE coefficient and the energy dependency of SEE coefficient. Pertinent algorithms to implement above SEE model in plasma simulation are studied in detail. It is found that the SEE coefficient increases with the amount of nega…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of accelerated and drive bunches dynamics in a dielectric waveguide filled with radially inhomogeneous plasma. The wakefield was excited by the electron bunch in a quartz (permittivity 3.75) dielectric tube with outer and inner diameters of 1.2 mm and 1.0 mm, respectively, which was nested into a cylindrical metallic waveguide. The drive bunch characteristics were chosen to be: 5 GeV for electron energy, 3 nC for the charge, 0.2 mm - the bunch length, 0.9 mm - the bunch diameter. The accelerated bunch had the same parameters, except fo…
The influence of charge trap states in the dielectric boundary material on capacitively coupled radio frequency plasma discharge is investigated with theory and Particle in cell/Monte Carlo Collision simulation. It is found that the trap states of the wall material manipulated discharge properties mainly through the varying ion induced secondary electron emission (SEE) coefficient in response to dynamic surface charges accumulated within solid boundary. A comprehensive SEE model considering surface charging is established first, which incorporates the valence band electron distribution, electr…
The characteristics of the surface waves along the interface between a plasma and a dielectric material have been investigated using kinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. A microwave source of GHz frequency has been used to trigger the surface wave in the system. The outcome indicates that the surface wave gets excited along the interface of plasma and the dielectric tube and appears as light and dark patterns in the electric field profiles. The dependency of radiation pressure on the dielectric permittivity and supplied input frequency has been investigated. Further, we assessed the cap…
