In order to better understand energy estimation of electromagnetic showers in segmented calorimeters, detailed Geant4 simulation studies of electromagnetic showers in the energy range 1--100 GeV in CsI have been performed. When sampled in layers of 1.99 cm thickness, corresponding to 1.08 radiation lengths, the energy fluctuations in the samples show distributions that vary significantly with depth. The energy distributions are similar for incident electrons and photons and were found to change systematically along the shower, varying little with the initial energy. Three probability distributions have been fitted to the data: negative binomial, log-normal and Gaussian distributions, none of which gives a good fit over the full shower length. The obtained parameterizations might be useful in the use of the maximum likelihood method for estimating the energy. Two methods for estimating the energy have also been studied. One method is based on fitting individual longitudinal shower profiles with a $Γ$-function, the other one corrects the measured energy for leakage by utilizing the energy deposited in the last layer. Our simulations indicate that the last-layer correction method applied to photons and electrons of 1 and 10 GeV gives about a factor of 2 improvement in the energy resolution.
The spatial resolution of laterally segmented electromagnetic calorimeters is studied on the basis of Monte-Carlo simulations worked-out for lead fluoride material. Parametrization of the relative resolution is proposed and optimized in terms of the energy of incoming particles and the elementary size of the calorimeter blocks. A new fit algorithm method is proposed that improves spatial resolution at high energies, and provides guidance for the design optimization of electromagnetic calorimeters.
In the reconstruction of physics events at future e$^+$e$^-$ colliders the calorimeter design has a crucial role in the overall detector performance. The reconstruction of events with many jets in their final state sets stringent requirements on the jet energy and angular resolutions. The energy resolution for jets with energy of about 45 GeV is required to be at the 4-5\% level to enable an efficient separation of the W and Z boson invariant masses. We demonstrate in this paper how such a performance can be achieved by exploiting a particle flow algorithm tailored for a hybrid dual-readout ca…
The longitudinal segmentation of shashlik calorimeters is challenged by dead zones and non-uniformities introduced by the light collection and readout system. This limitation can be overcome by direct fiber-photosensor coupling, avoiding routing and bundling of the wavelength shifter fibers and embedding ultra-compact photosensors (SiPMs) in the bulk of the calorimeter. We present the first experimental test of this readout scheme performed at the CERN PS-T9 beamline in 2015 with negative particles in the 1-5~GeV energy range. In this paper, we demonstrate that the scheme does not compromise t…
Crystal calorimeters have a long history of pushing the frontier on high-resolution electromagnetic (EM) calorimetry. We explore in this paper major innovations in collider detector performance that can be achieved with crystal calorimetry when longitudinal segmentation and dual-readout capabilities are combined with a new high EM resolution approach to PFA in multi-jet events, such as $e^+e^+\rightarrow HZ$ events in all-hadronic final-states at Higgs factories. We demonstrate a new technique for pre-processing $π^0$ momenta through combinatoric di-photon pairing in advance of applying jet al…

The resolution and the linearity of time measurements made with the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter are studied with samples of data from test beam electrons, cosmic rays, and beam-produced muons. The resulting time resolution measured by lead tungstate crystals is better than 100 ps for energy deposits larger than 10 GeV. Crystal-to-crystal synchronization with a precision of 500 ps is performed using muons produced with the first LHC beams in 2008.
In the years between 2000 and 2002 several pre-series and series modules of the ATLAS EM barrel and end-cap calorimeter were exposed to electron, photon and pion beams. The performance of the calorimeter with respect to its finely segmented first sampling has been studied. The polar angle resolution has been found to be in the range 50-60 mrad/sqrt(E (GeV)). The neutral pion rejection has been measured to be about 3.5 for 90% photon selection efficiency at pT=50 GeV/c. Electron-pion separation studies have indicated that a pion fake rate of (0.07-0.5)% can be achieved while maintaining 90% ele…
The CALICE collaboration is currently developing an engineering prototype of an analog hadron calorimeter for a future linear collider like the ILC. One main task of this prototype is to demonstrate the feasibility of building a realistic detector with fully integrated front-end electronics. To reach the required high jet energy resolution the detector is based on highly segmented read out layers. The signals are sampled by scintillating tiles that are individually read out by silicon photomultipliers. The readout chips are integrated into the calorimeter layers and are optimized for minimal p…
The Optimal Filtering (OF) reconstruction of the sampled signals from a particle detector such as a liquid ionization calorimeter relies on the knowledge of the normalized pulse shapes. This knowledge is always imprecise, since there are residual differences between the true ionization pulse shapes and the predicted ones, whatever the method used to model or fit the particle--induced signals. The systematic error introduced by the residuals on the signal amplitude estimate is analyzed, as well as the effect on the quality factor provided by the OF reconstruction. An analysis method to evaluate…
The CALICE collaboration has constructed highly granular electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter prototypes to evaluate technologies for the use in detector systems at the future International Linear Collider. These calorimeters have been tested extensively in particle beams at CERN and at Fermilab. We present analysis results for hadronic events recorded at CERN with a SiW ECAL, a scintillator tile HCAL and a scintillator strip tail catcher, the latter two with SiPM readout, focusing both on the HCAL alone and on the complete calorimeter setup. Particular emphasis is placed on the study of t…
The high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC will come with unprecedented physics and computing challenges. One of these challenges is the accurate reconstruction of particles in events with up to 200 simultaneous proton-proton interactions. The planned CMS High Granularity Calorimeter offers fine spatial resolution for this purpose, with more than 6 million channels, but also poses unique challenges to reconstruction algorithms aiming to reconstruct individual particle showers. In this contribution, we propose an end-to-end machine-learning method that performs clustering, classification, and energ…
Segmented electromagnetic calorimeters are used to determine both the total energy and direction (momentum components) of charged particles and photons. A trade off is involved in selecting the degree of segmentation of the calorimeter as the spatial and energy resolutions are affected differently. Increased number of individual detectors reduces accidental particle pile-up per detector but introduces complications related to ADC pedestals and pedestal variations, exacerbates the effects of electronic noise and ground loops, and requires summing and discrimination of multiple analog signals. M…
A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed. It is based on a principal component analysis of the calorimeter layer energy deposits, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the ATLAS calorimeters were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion…
In this talk recent simulation results on the single high energy electron reconstruction with the Beam Calorimeter for the ILD detector are presented. Guinea Pig is used to generate the e+e- pair background and GEANT4 for the simulation of electron showers in the calorimeter. An algorithm was developed for the sHEe reconstruction on top of the large e+e- background. The efficiency of the sHEe reconstruction is estimated for the nominal and SB-2009 ILC beam parameters.
This paper presents the design, implementation and validation of the software alignment procedure used to perform geometric calibration of the electromagnetic calorimeter with respect to the tracking system of the SND detector which is taking data at the VEPP-2000 e^{+}e^{-}collider (BINP, Novosibirsk). This procedure is based on the mathematical model describing the relative calorimeter position. The parameter values are determined by minimizing a χ^{2} function using the difference between particle directions reconstructed in these two subdetectors for e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-} scatte…

These systems were operated in hadron beams at CERN and FNAL, permitting the study of the performance in combined ECAL and HCAL systems. Two techniques for the energy reconstruction are used, a standard reconstructi…
The CALICE collaboration is currently developing engineering prototypes of electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for a future linear collider detector. This detector is designed to be used in particle-flow based event reconstruction. In particular, the calorimeters are optimized for the individual reconstruction and separation of electromagnetic and hadronic showers. They are conceived as sampling calorimeters with tungsten and steel absorbers, respectively. Two electromagnetic calorimeters are being developed, one with silicon-based active layers and one based on scintillator strips that …
A method for reconstructing the direction of a fast neutron source using a segmented organic scintillator-based detector and deep learning model is proposed and analyzed. The model is based on recurrent neural network, which can be trained by a sequence of data obtained from an event recorded in the detector and suitably pre-processed. The performance of deep learning-based model is compared with the conventional double-scatter detection algorithm in reconstructing the direction of a fast neutron source. With the deep learning model, the uncertainty in source direction of 0.301 rad is achieved…
The separation and reconstructions of charged hadron and neutral hadron from their overlapped showers in electromagnetic calorimeter is very important for the reconstructions of some particles with hadronic decays, for example the tau reconstruction in the searches for the Standard Model and supersymmetric Higgs bosons at the LHC. In this paper, a method combining the shower cluster in electromagnetic calorimeter and the parametric formula for hadron showers, was developed to separate the overlapped showers between charged hadron and neutral hadron. Taking the hadronic decay containing one cha…
The current developments for future electron-positron colliders are driven by the Particle Flow concept. In these developments, high granularity calorimeters play a central role. This presentation will focus on a new Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) developed for high granularity calorimeters, and especially for the Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL) option of the International Large Detector (ILD) project. The first PFA for ILD was PandoraPFA. This new PFA (APRIL) is based on the PandoraPFA Software Development Kit, but implements a different clustering inspired from the ARBOR PFA approa…
Prototypes of electromagnetic and hadronic imaging calorimeters developed and operated by the CALICE collaboration provide an unprecedented wealth of highly granular data of hadronic showers for a variety of active sensor elements and different absorber materials. In this presentation, we discuss detailed measurements of the spatial and the time structure of hadronic showers to characterise the different stages of hadronic cascades in the calorimeters, which are then confronted with GEANT4-based simulations using different hadronic physics models. These studies also extend to the two different…
We present a study which shows encouraging stability of the response linearity for a simulated high granularity calorimeter module reconstructed by a CNN model to miscalibration, bias, and noise effects. Our results also show an intuitive, quantifiable relationship between these factors and the calibration parameters. We trained a CNN model to reconstruct energy in the calorimeter module using simulated single-pion events; we then observed the response of the model under various miscalibration, bias, and noise conditions that affected the model input. From these data, we estimated linear respo…
The software compensation algorithms developed for the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter are extended to incorporate time information on the cell level, and the performance is studied in GEANT4 simulations with a detector model of a highly-granular SiPM-on-tile calorimeter. The addition of nanosecond-level time resolution is found to result in significant improvement of the energy resolution by approximately 3% to 4% for local software compensation compared to the software compensation based on local energy density alone, with further improvement possible with better timing resolution. The high…
The liquid argon ionization current in a sampling calorimeter cell can be analyzed to determine the energy of detected particles. In practice, experimental artifacts such as pileup and electronic noise make the inference of energy from current a difficult process. The beam intensity of the Large Hadron Collider will be significantly increased during the Phase-II long shut down of 2025-2027. Signal processing techniques that are used to extract the energy of detected particles in the ATLAS detector will suffer a significant loss in performance under these conditions. This paper compares the pre…
The CMS endcap calorimeter upgrade for the High Luminosity LHC in 2027 uses silicon sensors to achieve radiation tolerance, with the further benefit of a very high readout granularity. Small scintillator tiles with individual SiPM readout are used in regions permitted by the radiation levels. A reconstruction framework is being developed to fully exploit the granularity and other significant features of the detector like precision timing, especially in the high pileup environment of HL-LHC. An iterative clustering framework (TICL) has been put in place, and is being actively developed. The fra…
The performance demands of future particle-physics experiments investigating the high-energy frontier pose a number of new challenges, forcing us to find new solutions for the detection, identification, and measurement of final-state particles in subnuclear collisions. One such challenge is the precise measurement of muon momenta at very high energy, where the curvature provided by conceivable magnetic fields in realistic detectors proves insufficient to achieve the desired resolution. In this work we show the feasibility of an entirely new avenue for the measurement of the energy of muons bas…
A template fitting technique for reconstructing the amplitude of signals produced by the lead tungstate crystals of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter is described. This novel approach is designed to suppress the increased out-of-time pileup contribution to the signal following the reduction of the accelerator bunch spacing from 50 to 25 ns at the start of Run 2 of the LHC. Execution of the algorithm is sufficiently fast for it to be employed in the CMS high-level trigger. It is also used in the offline event reconstruction. Results obtained from simulations and from Run 2 collision data (201…
The PADME experiment, hosted at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati in Italy, is dedicated to the dark photon search. It looks for the reaction $e^{+}\,e^{-}\rightarrow A'\,γ$, where $A'$ indicates the dark photon. The $550\,\text{MeV}$ positrons beam that impinges on electrons, coming from an active diamond target, allows to scan $A'$ masses up to $23.7\,\text{MeV}$. In this context, the segmented electromagnetic calorimeter plays a fundamental role, since it measures the final photon four-momentum. It consists of $616$ BGO crystals displaced in a cylindrical shape of $\approx29\,\text{cm}$ …
The PADME apparatus was built at the Frascati National Laboratory of INFN to search for a dark photon ($A'$) produced via the process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow A' γ$. The central component of the PADME detector is an electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 616 BGO crystals dedicated to the measurement of the energy and position of the final state photons. The high beam particle multiplicity over a short bunch duration requires reliable identification and measurement of overlapping signals. A regression machine-learning-based algorithm has been developed to disentangle with high efficiency close-in-…
A new method called Neighbor Cell Deposited Energy Ratio (NCDER) is proposed to reconstruct incidence position in a single layer for a 3-dimensional imaging electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL).This method was applied to reconstruct the ECAL test beam data for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02). The results show that this method can achieve an angular resolution of 7.36\pm 0.08 / \sqrt(E) \oplus 0.28 \pm 0.02 degree in the determination of the photons direction, which is much more precise than that obtained with the commonly-adopted Center of Gravity(COG) method (8.4 \pm 0.1 /sqrt(E) \o…
The magnetised Iron CALorimeter detector (ICAL), proposed to be built at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO), is designed to study atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The ICAL detector is optimized to measure the muon momentum, its direction and charge. A GEANT4-based package has been developed by the INO collaboration to simulate the ICAL geometry and propagation of particles through the detector. We present the current stage of research progress towards a one-pass, completely Machine Learning (ML) based imaging calorimeter reconstruction. The model used is based on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and directly analyzes the hits in each HGCAL endcap. The ML algorithm is trained to predict clusters of hits originating from the same incident particle by labeling the hits with the same cluster index. We impose simple criteria to assess whether the hits associated as a cluster by the prediction are matched to those hits resulting from any particular individual incident particles. The algorithm …

These technologies also find applications elsewhere, such as detector upgrades for the LHC. Meanwhile, the large data sets collected in an extensive series of beam tests have enabled detailed studies of the properties of hadronic showers in calorimeter systems, resulting in improved simulation models and development of sophisticated reconstruction techniques. We contrasted the performance of deep neural networks - Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Graph Neural Network (GNN) - to current state of the art energy regression methods in a finely 3D-segmented calorimeter simulated by GEANT4. This comparative benchmark gives us some insight to assess the particular latent signals neural network methods exploit to achieve superior resolution. A CNN trained solely on a pure sample of pions achieved substantial improvement in the energy resolution for both single pions and jets over the conventional approaches. It maintained good performance for electro…
Recent advances in segmented solid-state detector arrays for rare-event searches have allowed the technology to approach the ton-scale in detector mass and the scale of meters in size. Often focused around searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay or direct dark matter detection, such experiments also have the capability to search for exotic particles that leave track-like signatures across their volume. However, the segmented nature of such detector arrays often sets the spatial resolution and makes the problem of reconstructing track-like paths non-trivial. In this paper, we present an alg…
The recent upgrade of the LHCb experiment pushes data processing rates up to 40 Tbit/s. Out of the whole reconstruction sequence, one of the most time consuming algorithms is the calorimeter reconstruction. It aims at performing a clustering of the readout cells from the detector that belong to the same particle in order to measure its energy and position. This article presents a new algorithm for the calorimeter reconstruction that makes use of graph data structures to optimise the clustering process, that will be denoted Graph Clustering. It outperforms the previously used method by $65.4\%$…

We present an end-to-end reconstruction algorithm to build particle candidates from detector hits in next-generation granular calorimeters similar to that foreseen for the high-luminosity upgrade of the CMS detector. The algorithm exploits a distance-weighted graph neural network, trained with object condensation, a graph segmentation technique. Through a single-shot approach, the reconstruction task is paired with energy regression. We describe the reconstruction performance in terms of efficiency as well as in terms of energy resolution. In addition, we show the jet reconstruction performanc…

We investigate the effect of longitudinal and transverse calorimeter segmentation on event-by-event software compensation for hadronic showers. To factorize out sampling and electronics effects, events are simulated in which a single charged pion is shot at a homogenous lead glass calorimeter, split into longitudinal and transverse segments of varying size. As an approximation of an optimal reconstruction, a neural network-based energy regression is trained. The architecture is based on blocks of convolutional kernels customized for shower energy regression using local energy densities; biases…
Jet substructure variables for hadronic jets with transverse momenta in the range from 2.5 TeV to 20 TeV were studied using several designs for the spatial size of calorimeter cells. The studies used the full Geant4 simulation of calorimeter response combined with realistic reconstruction of calorimeter clusters. In most cases, the results indicate that the performance of jet-substructure reconstruction improves with reducing cell size of a hadronic calorimeter from $Δη\times Δϕ= 0.087\times0.087$, which are similar to the cell sizes of the calorimeters of LHC experiments, by a factor of four,…
Energy reconstruction in calorimeters operating in high luminosity particle colliders has become a remarkable challenge. In this scenario, pulses from a calorimeter front-end output overlap each other (pile-up effect), compromising the energy estimation procedure when no preprocessing for signal disentanglement is accomplished. Recently, methods based on signal deconvolution have been proposed for both online and offline reconstructions. For online processing, constraints concerning fast processing, memory requirements, and cost implementation limit the overall performance. Offline reconstruct…
The CALICE collaboration has constructed highly granular hadronic and electromagnetic calorimeter prototypes to evaluate technologies for the use in detector systems at a future Linear Collider. The hadron calorimeter uses 7608 small scintillator cells individually read out with silicon photomultipliers. This high granularity opens up the possibility for precise three dimensional shower reconstruction and for software compensation techniques to improve the energy resolution of the detector. We discuss the calibration procedure for the analog hadronic calorimeter and present two software compen…
The topic of the paper is the position reconstruction from signals of segmented detectors. With the help of a simple simulation, it is shown that the position reconstruction using the centre-of-gravity method is strongly biased, if the width of the charge (or e.g. light) distribution at the electrodes (or photo detectors) is less than the read-out pitch. A method is proposed which removes this bias for events with signals in two or more read-out channels and thereby improves the position resolution. The method also provides an estimate of the position-response function for every event. Example…
