In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) multi-relaxation time (MRT) lattice-Boltzmann (LB) models for multiphase flow are presented. In contrast to the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model, a widely employed kinetic model, in MRT models the rates of relaxation processes owing to collisions of particle populations may be independently adjusted. As a result, the MRT models offer a significant improvement in numerical stability of the LB method for simulating fluids with lower viscosities. We show through the Chapman-Enskog multiscale analysis that the continuum limit behavior of 3D MRT LB models corresponds to that of the macroscopic dynamical equations for multiphase flow. We extend the 3D MRT LB models developed to represent multiphase flow with reduced compressibility effects. The multiphase models are evaluated by verifying the Laplace-Young relation for static drops and the frequency of oscillations of drops. The results show satisfactory agreement with available data and significant gains in numerical stability.
In the classical multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, the transformation matrix is formed by constructing a set of orthogonal basis vectors. In this paper, a theoretical and numerical study is performed to investigate the capability and efficiency of a non-orthogonal MRT-LB model for simulating multiphase flows. First, a three-dimensional non-orthogonal MRT-LB is proposed. A non-orthogonal MRT collision operator is devised based on a set of non-orthogonal basis vectors, through which the transformation matrix and its inverse matrix are considerably simplified as compar…
In this paper, an efficient three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) collision operator is developed for the simulation of multiphase flows. This model is an extension of our previous two-dimensional model (H. Liang, B. C. Shi, Z. L. Guo, and Z. H. Chai, Phys. Rev. E. 89, 053320 (2014)) to the three dimensions using the D3Q7 (seven discrete velocities in three dimensions) lattice for the Chan-Hilliard equation (CHE) and the D3Q15 lattice for the Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs). Due to the smaller lattice-velocity numbers used, the computional efficiency…
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating incompressible axisymmetric thermal flows in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. In the model, a D2Q9 MRT-LB equation is proposed to solve the flow field in addition to the D2Q5 LB equation for the temperature field. The source terms of the model are simple and contain no velocity and temperature gradient terms. The generalized axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for axisymmetric flows in porous media are correctly recovered from the MRT-LB model through the C…
In this paper, a non-orthogonal multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for simulating incompressible thermal flows is presented. In the method, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and temperature equation are solved separately by two different MRT-LB equations, which are developed based on non-orthogonal basis vectors obtained from the combinations of the lattice velocity components. The macroscopic governing equations of incompressible thermal flows can be recovered from the method through the Chapman-Enskog analysis in the incompressible limit. Numerical simulati…
Double-diffusive convection in porous media is a common phenomenon in nature, and has received considerable attention in a wide variety of engineering applications. In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating double-diffusive convection in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. The MRT-LB model is constructed in the framework of the triple-distribution-function approach: the velocity field, the temperature and concentration fields are solved separately by three different MRT-LB equations. The present model has tw…
We present an axisymmetric lattice Boltzmann model based on the Kupershtokh et al. multiphase model that is capable of solving liquid-gas density ratios up to $10^3$. Appropriate source terms are added to the lattice Boltzmann evolution equation to fully recover the axisymmetric multiphase conservation equations. We validate the model by showing that a stationary droplet obeys the Young-Laplace law, comparing the second oscillation mode of a droplet with respect to an analytical solution and showing correct mass conservation of a propagating density wave.
A three-dimensional (3 D) multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) and a 3 D single-relaxation-time (SRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) models are proposed for the solid-liquid phase change. The enthalpy conservation equation can be recovered from the present models. The reasonable relationship of the relaxation times in the MRT model is discussed. Both One-dimensional (1 D) melting and solidification with analytical solutions are respectively calculated by the SRT and MRT models for validation. Compared with the SRT model, the MRT one is more accurate to capture the phase interface. The MRT model is also veri…
Multiple-relaxation-time model (MRT) has more advantages than the many others approaches in the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). Three-dimensional double MRT model is proposed for the first time for fluid flow and heat transfer simulation. Three types of cubic natural convection problems are solved with proposed method at various Rayleigh numbers. Two opposite vertical walls on the left and right are kept at different temperatures for all three types, while the remained four walls are either adiabatic or have linear temperature variations. For the first two types of cubic natural convections th…
In this paper, a two-dimensional eight-velocity (D2Q8) multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for incompressible porous flows at the representative elementary volume scale based on the Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy formulation. In the model, the porosity is included into the pressure-based equilibrium moments, and the linear and nonlinear drag forces of the porous media are incorporated into the model by adding a forcing term to the MRT-LB equation in the moment space. Through the Chapman-Enskog analysis, the generalized Navier-Stokes equations can be rec…
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for convection heat transfer in porous media under local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) condition. The model is constructed within the framework of the three-distribution-function approach: two temperature-based MRT-LB equations are proposed for the temperature fields of fluid and solid phases in addition to the MRT-LB equation of a density distribution function for the velocity field described by the generalized non-Darcy model. The thermal non-equilibrium effects are incorporated into the model by adding…
A lattice Boltzmann method for axisymmetric multiphase flows is presented and validated. The method is capable of accurately modeling flows with variable density. We develop the classic Shan-Chen multiphase model [ Phys. Rev. E 47 1815 (1993)] for axisymmetric flows. The model can be used to efficiently simulate single and multiphase flows. The convergence to the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations is demonstrated analytically by means of a Chapmann-Enskog expansion and numerically through several test cases. In particular, the model is benchmarked for its accuracy in reproducing the dynamics…
Current multi-component, multiphase pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann models have thermodynamic inconsistencies that prevent them to correctly predict the thermodynamic phase behavior of partially miscible multi-component mixtures, such as hydrocarbon mixtures. This paper identifies these inconsistencies and attempts to design a thermodynamically consistent multi-component, multiphase pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann model that allows mass transfer across the phase interfaces and is capable to predict the phase behavior of typically partially miscible hydrocarbon mixtures. The designed mode…
We present a lattice Boltzmann model for charged leaky dielectric multiphase fluids in the context of electrified jet simulations, which are of interest for a number of production technologies including electrospinning. The role of non-linear rheology on the dynamics of electrified jets is considered by exploiting the Carreau model for pseudoplastic fluids. We report exploratory simulations of charged droplets at rest and under a constant electric field, and we provide results for charged jet formation under electrospinning conditions.
A novel lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for multiphase flows is developed that complies with the thermodynamic foundations of kinetic theory. By directly devising the collision term for LB equation at the discrete level, a self-tuning equation of state is achieved, which can be interpreted as the incorporation of short-range molecular interaction. A pairwise interaction force is introduced to mimic the long-range molecular interaction, which is responsible for interfacial dynamics. The derived pressure tensor is naturally consistent with thermodynamic theory, and surface tension and interface thi…
In this paper, a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is presented for axisymmetric multiphase flows. Source terms are added to a two-dimensional standard lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) for multiphase flows such that the emergent dynamics can be transformed into the axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system. The source terms are temporally and spatially dependent and represent the axisymmetric contribution of the order parameter of fluid phases and inertial, viscous and surface tension forces. A model which is effectively explicit and second order is obtained. This is achieved by taking into accoun…
The spurious currents observed in multiphase flow simulations with pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann (LB) models are usually understood to be the result of the lack of isotropy of the model-generated interaction force between phases. Remedies have been proposed to utilize larger stencils to compute the interaction force with higher orders of isotropy. In this short communication, we point out the incompleteness in the current understanding and propose a new consistent implementation to more effectively suppress the spurious currents. We also demonstrate theoretically that certain low-level sp…
We develop, after Dellar (P. J. Dellar, Phys. Rev. E. 65, 036309 (2002), J. Comput. Phys. 190, pp351 (2003)), a multiple-relaxation time (MRT), chromodynamic, multi-component lattice Boltzmann equation (MCLBE) scheme for simulation of isothermal, immiscible fluid flow with a density contrast. It is based on Lishchuk's method (J. U. Brackbill, D. B. Kothe and C. Zemach, J. Comp. Phys. 100, 335-354 (1992), S. V. Lishchuk, C. M. Care and I. Halliday, Phys. Rev. E. 67(3), 036701(2), (2003)) and the segregation of d'Ortona et al. (U. D'Ortona, D. Salin, M. Cieplak, R. B. Rybka and J. R. Banavar Phy…
In this paper, based on the previous work [B. Shi, Z. Guo, Lattice Boltzmann model for nonlinear convection-diffusion equations, Phys. Rev. E 79 (2009) 016701], we develop a general multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann model for nonlinear anisotropic convection-diffusion equation (NACDE), and show that the NACDE can be recovered correctly from the present model through the Chapman-Enskog analysis. We then test the MRT model through some classic CDEs, and find that the numerical results are in good agreement with analytical solutions or some available results. Besides, the numerical…
In this paper, a two-dimensional (2D) multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating convection heat transfer in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. In the model, a MRT-LB equation is used to simulate the flow field, while another MRT-LB equation is employed to simulate the temperature field. The effect of the porous media is considered by introducing the porosity into the equilibrium moments, and adding a forcing term to the MRT-LB equation of the flow field in the moment space. The present MRT-LB model is validated by numerical…
The purposes of this paper are testing an efficiency algorithm based on LBM and using it to analyze two-dimensional natural convection with low Prandtl number. Steady state or oscillatory results are obtained using double multiple-relaxation-time thermal lattice Boltzmann method. The velocity and temperature fields are solved using D2Q9 and D2Q5 models, respectively. With different Rayleigh number, the tested natural convection can either achieve to steady state or oscillatory. With fixed Rayleigh number, lower Prandtl number leads to a weaker convection effect, longer oscillation period and h…
In this paper, we give a more pellucid derivation for the cascaded lattice Boltzmann method (CLBM) based on a general multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) frame through defining a shift matrix. When the shift matrix is a unit matrix, the CLBM degrades into an MRT LBM. Based on this, a consistent forcing scheme is developed for the CLBM. The applicability of the non-slip rule, the second-order convergence rate in space and the property of isotropy for the consistent forcing scheme is demonstrated through the simulation of several canonical problems. Several other existing force schemes previously use…
New method to simulate heat transport in multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is proposed. The energy transport equation needs to be solved when phase boundaries are present. Internal energy is represented by an additional set of distribution functions, which evolve according to a LB-like equation simulating the transport of a passive scalar. Parasitic heat diffusion near boundaries with large density gradient is supressed by using the interparticle "pseudoforces" which prevent the spreading of energy. The compression work and heat diffusion are calculated by finite differences. The latent…

Over the last two decades, lattice Boltzmann methods have become an increasingly popular tool to compute the flow in complex geometries such as porous media. In addition to single phase simulations allowing, for example, a precise quantification of the permeability of a porous sample, a number of extensions to the lattice Boltzmann method are available which allow to study multiphase and multicomponent flows on a pore scale level. In this article we give an extensive overview on a number of these diffuse interface models and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we shortly r…
In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is presented for convection heat transfer in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. The model is developed in the framework of the double-distribution-function (DDF) approach: an MRT-LB model of the density distribution function with the D3Q19 lattice (or D3Q15 lattice) is proposed to simulate the flow field based on the generalized non-Darcy model, while an MRT-LB model of the temperature distribution function with the D3Q7 lattice is proposed to simulate the temperat…
Contact angle is an essential physical quantity that characterizes the wettability of a substrate. Although it is widely used in the studies of surface wetting, capillary phenomena and moving contact lines, measuring contact angles in experiments and simulations is still complicated and time-consuming. In this paper, we present an efficient scheme for the real-time and on-the-spot measurement of contact angles on curved wetting surfaces in lattice Boltzmann simulations. The measuring results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions by the spherical cap method without conside…
Lattice Boltmzmann Methods (LBM) have been proved to be very effective methods for computational aeroacoustics (CAA), which have been used to capture the dynamics of weak acoustic fluctuations. In this paper, we propose a strategy to reduce the dispersive and disspative errors of the two-dimensional (2D) multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM). By presenting an effective algorithm, we obtain a uniform form of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations corresponding to the MRT-LBM in wave-number space. Using the matrix perturbation theory and the equivalent modified equation approa…
Owing to its conceptual simplicity and computational efficiency, the pseudopotential multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) model has attracted significant attention since its emergence. In this work, we aim to extend the pseudopotential LB model to simulate multiphase flows at large density ratio and relatively high Reynolds number. First, based on our recent work [Li et al., Phys. Rev. E. 86, 016709 (2012)], an improved forcing scheme is proposed for the multiple-relaxation-time pseudopotential LB model in order to achieve thermodynamic consistency and large density ratio in the model. Next, thro…
With the aim of better understanding the numerical properties of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), a general methodology is proposed to derive its hydrodynamic limits in the discrete setting. It relies on a Taylor expansion in the limit of low Knudsen numbers. With a single asymptotic analysis, two kinds of deviations with the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are explicitly evidenced: consistency errors, inherited from the kinetic description of the LBM, and numerical errors attributed to its space and time discretization. The methodology is applied to the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK), the regula…
A unified MRT-LB framework for Navier-Stokes and nonlinear convection-diffusion equations and beyond: moment equations, auxiliary moments, multispeed lattices, and Hermite matrices
It is shown that the Shan-Chen (SC) model for non-ideal lattice fluids can be made compliant with a pseudo free-energy principle by simple addition of a gradient force, whose expression is uniquely specified in terms of the fluid density. This additional term is numerically shown to provide fairly negligible effects on the system evolution during phase-separation. To the best of our knowledge, these important properties of the SC model were not noted before. The approach developed in the present work is based on a continuum analysis: further extensions, more in line with a discrete lattice the…
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a popular numerical framework to investigate single and multiphase flow though porous media. For estimation of absolute permeability based on micro-tomographic images of the porous medium, the single-relaxation time (SRT) collision model is the most widely-used, although the multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) collision model also has recently acquired wider usage, especially for industrial applications. However, the SRT collision model and a sub-optimal choice of the MRT collision parameters can both lead to permeability predictions that depend on the relaxati…
The existing lattice Boltzmann models for incompressible multiphase flows are mostly constructed with two distribution functions, one is the order parameter distribution function, which is used to track the interface between different phases, and the other is the pressure distribution function for solving the velocity field. In this brief report, it is shown that in these models the recovered momentum equation is inconsistent with the target one: an additional interfacial force is included in the recovered momentum equation. The effects of the additional force are investigated by numerical sim…
A general analysis of the hydrodynamic limit of multi-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann models is presented. We examine multi-relaxation time BGK collision operators that are constructed similarly to those for the MRT case, however, without explicitly moving into a moment space representation. The corresponding 'moments' are derived as left eigenvectors of said collision operator in velocity space. Consequently we can, in a representation independent of the chosen base velocity set, generate the conservation equations. We find a significant degree of freedom in the choice of the collision matr…
In this paper, an improved three-dimensional color-gradient lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for simulating immiscible multiphase flows. Compared with the previous three-dimensional color-gradient LB models, which suffer from the lack of Galilean invariance and considerable numerical errors in many cases owing to the error terms in the recovered macroscopic equations, the present model eliminates the error terms and therefore improves the numerical accuracy and enhances the Galilean invariance. To validate the proposed model, numerical simulation are performed. First, the test of a mov…
We present a novel approach to kinetic theory modeling enabling the simulation of a generic, real gas presented by its corresponding equation of state. The model is based on mass, momentum and energy conservation, and unlike the lattice Boltzmann models enables simulations of fluids exhibiting a liquid-vapor phase transition in both super- and subcritical states. In this new kinetic theory,an arbitrary equation of state can be introduced through rescaling the discrete particle velocities.Different benchmarks associated with real-gas thermodynamics illustrate that the proposed scheme can handle…
The liquid-gas density ratio is a key property of multiphase flow methods to model real fluid systems. Here, a chemical-potential multiphase lattice Boltzmann method is constructed to realize extremely large density ratios. The simulations show that the method reaches very low temperatures, at which the liquid-gas density ratio is more than 10^14, while the thermodynamic consistency is still preserved. Decoupling the mesh space from the momentum space through a proportional coefficient, a smaller mesh step provides denser lattice nodes to exactly describe the transition region and the resultin…
We present a novel lattice Boltzmann method that has a capability of simulating thermodynamic multiphase flows. This approach is fully thermodynamically consistent at the macroscopic level. Using this new method, a liquid-vapor boiling process, including liquid-vapor formation and coalescence together with a full coupling of temperature, is simulated for the first time.
Simulation of multiphase flows require coupled capturing or tracking of the interfaces in conjunction with the solution of fluid motion often occurring at multiple scales. We will present unified cascaded LB methods based on central moments for the solution of the incompressible two-phase flows at high density ratios and for capturing of the interfacial dynamics. Based on a modified continuous Boltzmann equation (MCBE) for two-phase flows, where a kinetic transformation to the distribution function involving the pressure field is introduced to reduce the associated numerical stiffness at high …
Spurious currents, which are often observed near a curved interface in the multiphase simulations by diffuse interface methods, are unphysical phenomena and usually damage the computational accuracy and stability. In this paper, the origination and suppression of spurious currents are investigated by using the multiphase lattice Boltzmann method driven by chemical potential. Both the difference error and insufficient isotropy of discrete gradient operator give rise to the directional deviations of nonideal force and then originate the spurious currents. Nevertheless, the high-order finite diff…

Rectangular multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method for the Navier-Stokes and nonlinear convection-diffusion equations: General equilibrium and some important issues
We analyse a linear lattice Boltzmann (LB) formulation for simulation of linear acoustic wave propagation in heterogeneous media. We employ the single-relaxation-time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) as well as the general multi-relaxation-time (MRT) collision operators. By calculating the dispersion relation for various 2D lattices, we show that the D2Q5 lattice is the most suitable model for the linear acoustic problem. We also implement a grid-refinement algorithm for the LB scheme to simulate waves propagating in a heterogeneous medium with velocity contrasts. Our results show that the LB schem…
Modeling liquid-vapor phase change using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has attracted significant attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose an improved three-dimensional (3D) thermal multiphase LB model for simulating liquid-vapor phase change. The proposed model has the following features. First, it is still within the framework of the thermal LB method using a temperature distribution function and therefore retains the fundamental advantages of the thermal LB method. Second, in the existing thermal LB models for liquid-vapor phase change, the finite-difference computations of t…
Over the past few decades, tremendous progress has been made in the development of particle-based discrete simulation methods versus the conventional continuum-based methods. In particular, the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has evolved from a theoretical novelty to a ubiquitous, versatile and powerful computational methodology for both fundamental research and engineering applications. It is a kinetic-based mesoscopic approach that bridges the microscales and macroscales, which offers distinctive advantages in simulation fidelity and computational efficiency. Applications of the LB method have…
The pseudopotential multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is a very popular model in the LB community for simulating multiphase flows. When the multiphase modeling involves a solid boundary, a numerical scheme is required to simulate the contact angle at the solid boundary. In this work, we aim at investigating the implementation of contact angles in the pseudopotential LB simulations with curved boundaries. In the pseudopotential LB model, the contact angle is usually realized by employing a solid-fluid interaction or specifying a constant virtual wall density. However, it is shown that the…
In this paper, we first present a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LB) model for one-dimensional diffusion equation where the D1Q3 (three discrete velocities in one-dimensional space) lattice structure is considered. Then through the theoretical analysis, we derive an explicit four-level finite-difference scheme from this MRT-LB model. The results show that the four-level finite-difference scheme is unconditionally stable, and through adjusting the weight coefficient $ω_{0}$ and the relaxation parameters $s_1$ and $s_2$ corresponding to the first and second moments, it can also …
In this paper, a novel lattice Boltzmann (LB) model based on the Allen-Cahn phase-field theory is proposed for simulating axisymmetric multiphase flows. The most striking feature of the model is that it enables to handle multiphase flows with large density ratio, which are unavailable in all previous axisymmetric LB models. The present model utilizes two LB evolution equations, one of which is used to solve fluid interface, and another is adopted to solve hydrodynamic properties. To simulate axisymmetric multiphase flows effectively, the appropriate source term and equilibrium distribution fun…
