A new dimensional scaling method for the calculation of excited states of multielectron atoms is introduced. By including the principle and orbital quantum numbers in the dimension parameter, we obtain an energy expression for excited states including high angular momentum states. The method is tested on He, Li, and Be. We obtain good agreement with more orthodox quantum mechanical treatments even in the zeroth order.
RMT is a program which solves the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for general, multielectron atoms, ions and molecules interacting with laser light. As such it can be used to model ionization (single-photon, multi-photon and strong-field), recollision (high-harmonic generation, strong-field rescattering), and more generally absorption or scattering processes with a full account of the multielectron correlation effects in a time-dependent manner. Calculations can be performed for targets interacting with ultrashort, intense laser pulses of long-wavelength and arbitrary polarization. Calcula…
We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the electronic structures of the Yb atom and the Yb$_2$ molecule, respectively, focusing on their ground and lowest-lying electronically excited states. Our study includes various state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods such as CCSD, CCSD(T), CASPT2 (including spin--orbit coupling), and EOM-CCSD as well as some recently developed pCCD-based approaches and their extensions to target excited states. Specifically, we scan the lowest-lying potential energy surfaces of the \ce{Yb2} dimer and provide a reliable benchmark set of spectroscopic paramet…
We consider tunneling of two interacting atoms with an even spatial symmetry. The atoms are prepared in two lowest excited states with respect to relative and center-of-mass motions. We observe monotonic and non-monotonic dependence of the decay rate of the total probability as a function of the interatomic coupling strength $g$. We find a transition from uncorrelated to correlated pair tunneling as a function of $g$ and an external trap barrier. The similar system has been investigated for two interacting $^6$Li atoms in the deterministic Heidelberg experiment.
Evaluation of the Coulomb and exchange integrals for higher excited states of helium atom, taking into account the interaction between magnetic moments of the electrons
Accurate calculations of phase lag associated with coherent control where an excited system decays into more than one product channel have recently been reported for atomic barium in PhysRevA.105.013113 (2022). The present study extends the calculations to make predictions of that observable for another alkaline earth atom, strontium, with a discussion of its spectrum and phase lag for energies between the $Sr^{+}$ $4d_{3/2}$ and $4d_{5/2}$ thresholds. We will explore the physics influenced by the electron correlations of strontium and the long-range Coulomb potential. The behavior of the phas…
We propose and demonstrate a method to increase the momentum separation between the arms of an atom interferometer and thus its area and measurement precision, by using Bloch oscillations (BOs) in an excited band of a pulsed optical standing wave lattice. Using excited bands allows us to operate at particular "magic" depths, where high momentum transfer efficiency ($>99.4\%$ per $\hbar k$, where $\hbar k$ is the photon momentum) is maintained while minimizing the lattice-induced phase fluctuations ($<1\,$milliradian per $\hbar k$) that are unavoidable in ground-band BOs. We apply this method t…
Small Phase Space Structures and their Relevance to Pulsed Quantum Evolution: the Stepwise Ionization of the Excited Hydrogen Atom in a Microwave Pulse
Measurements of the loss rates for strontium n$^{3}$S$_{1}$ Rydberg atoms excited in a dense BEC are presented for values of principal quantum number $n$ in the range $49\lesssim n \lesssim 150$ and local atom densities of $\sim1$ to $3\times10^{14}$cm$^{-3}$. Two main processes contribute to loss, associative ionization and state-changing. The relative importance of these two loss channels is investigated and their $n$- and density-dependences are discussed using a model in which Rydberg atom loss is presumed to involve a close collision between the Rydberg core ion and ground-state atoms. Th…

The scalar and tensor components of the electric quadrupole (E2) polarizabilities of the first two excited states of all the alkali-metal atoms are determined. To validate the calculations, we have evaluated the ground state E2 polarizabilities of these atoms and compared them with the literature values. We could not find the ground state E2 polarizability value for Fr in the literature to compare with our result. The dominant parts of these quantities are estimated by combining the precisely calculated E2 transition matrix elements of many low-lying transitions with the experimental energies,…
Collective resonance of interacting particles has important implications in many-body quantum systems and their applications. Strong interactions can lead to a blockade that prohibits the excitation of a collective resonance of two or more nearby atoms. However, a collective resonance can be excited with the presence of weak interaction and has been observed for atoms in the first excited state ($P$ states). Here, we report the observation of collective resonance of rubidium atoms in a higher excited state ($D$ states) in addition to the first excited state. The collective resonance is excited…
The collective effect of large amounts of atoms exhibit an enhanced interaction between light and atoms. This holds great interest in quantum optics, and quantum information. When a collective excited state of a group of atoms during Rabi oscillation is varying, the oscillation exhibits rich dynamics. Here, we experimentally observe a size-reduction effect of the Rydberg collective state during Rabi oscillation in cold atomic dilute gases. The Rydberg collective state was first created by the Rydberg quantum memory, and we observed a decreased oscillation frequency effect by measuring the time…
We consider a neutralization of excited antiprotonic helium ion accompanied by antiproton transitions to lower states in collisions with helium atoms $(\bar{p}\mathrm{He}^{2+})_{nl} + \mathrm{He} \rightarrow \left[ (\bar{p}\mathrm{He}^{2+})_{n_f l_f} e\right]_{1s} + \mathrm{He}^+$ in low-temperature medium. Interactions in the input and output channels are taken similar to the potentials of $\mathrm{H}^+ - \mathrm{He}$ ($X^1Σ$) and $\mathrm{H} - \mathrm{He}^+$ ($A^1Σ$) systems, respectively. The final term is shifted down by the antiproton transition energy. Therefore initial and final terms c…
Spontaneous emission from individual atoms in vapor lasts nanoseconds, if not microseconds, and beatings in this emission involve only directly excited energy sublevels. In contrast, the superfluorescent emissions burst on a much-reduced timescale and their beatings involve both directly and indirectly excited energy sublevels. In this work, picosecond and femtosecond superfluorescent beatings are observed from a dense cesium atomic vapor. Cesium atoms are excited by 60-femtosecond long, 800 nm laser pulses via two-photon processes into their coherent superpositions of the ground 6S and excite…
Interaction between Rydberg atoms can significantly modify Rydberg excitation dynamics. Under a resonant driving field the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction in high-lying states can induce shifts in the atomic resonance such that a secondary Rydberg excitation becomes unlikely leading to the Rydberg blockade effect. In a related effect, off-resonant coupling of light to Rydberg states of atoms contributes to the Rydberg anti-blockade effect where the Rydberg interaction creates a resonant condition that promotes a secondary excitation in a Rydberg atomic gas. Here, we study the light-matter interact…
We present a numerical implementation of the infinite-range exterior complex scaling (irECS) [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053845 (2010)] as an efficient absorbing boundary to the time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent field (TD-CASSCF) method [Phys. Rev. A 94, 023405 (2016)] for multielectron atoms subject to an intense laser pulse. We introduce Gauss-Laguerre-Radau quadrature points to construct discrete variable representation basis functions in the last radial finite element extending to infinity. This implementation is applied to strong-field ionization and high-harmonic generation in H…
In this tutorial we provide a short review of attosecond pulse characterization techniques and a pedagogical account of a recently proposed method called Pulse Analysis by Delayed Absorption (PANDA) [Pabst and Dahlström, Phys. Rev. A, 94, 13411 (2016)]. We discuss possible implementations of PANDA in alkali atoms using either principal quantum number wave packets or spin-orbit wave packets. The main merit of the PANDA method is that it can be used as a pulse characterization method that is free from atomic latency effects, such as scattering phase shifts and long-lived atomic resonances. Final…
