The linear Stark effect shows that the first excited state of hydrogen atom has large permanent electric dipole moment (EDM), d(H)=3eao (ao is Bohr radius). Using special capacitors our experiments discovered that the ground state K, Rb or Cs atom is polar atom with a large EDM of the order of eao as hydrogen atom of excited state. Their capacitance(C) at different voltage (V) was measured. The C-V curve shows that the saturation polarization of K, Rb or Cs vapor has be observed when the field E more than ten to the fifth power V/m. When the saturation polarization appeared, nearly all K, Rb or Cs atoms(more than 98 percent) turned toward the direction of the field, and C is approximately equal to Co (Co is vacuum capacitance) or their dielectric constant is nearly the same as vacuum! K, Rb or Cs vapor just exist in the lowest energy state, so we see the vacuum state containing a large number of atoms! Due to the saturation polarization of hydrogen vapor of excited state is easily appears, we conjecture that a vacuum state containing a large number of hydrogen atom of excited state may exist at early Universe when the absolute temperature T is approximately equal to ten to the fifth power K.
"Does God play dice with the Universe?" The natural width of excited hydrogen atoms are found using the Bohr's model of this atom and de Broglie's ideas. The mean life time of the excited states is a characteristic only of a statistical ensemble of many atoms.
In this paper it is shown that if one accept assumption of de Broglie that "unitary wave-particle" exists simultaneously and this coexistence is real, then one can find the mean life time of the hydrogen atom of Bohr (intensities).
We report on highly accurate calculations of Born-Oppenheimer potentials for excited $n\,Σ^{+}$ states of the hydrogen molecule for all possible combinations of singlet/triplet and gerade/ungerade symmetries up to $n=7$. A relative accuracy of $10^{-10}$ (0.00002 cm$^{-1}$) or better is achieved for all the internuclear distances and all the excited states under consideration -- an improvement with respect to the best results available in the literature by at least 6 orders of magnitude. Presented variational calculations rely on efficient evaluation of molecular integrals with the explicitly …
Experiments have shown that the microwave ionization probability of a highly excited almost monodimensional hydrogen atom subjected to a microwave pulse sometimes grows in steps when the peak electric field of the pulse is increased. Classical pulsed simulations display the same steps, which have been traced to phase-space metamorphoses. Quantum numerical calculations again exhibit the same ionization steps. I show that the time-sequence of two level interactions, responsible for the observed steps in the quantum picture, is strictly related to the classical phase space structures generated by…
We report the first direct observation of excited state muon transfer in hydrogen/deuterium mixtures by direct measurement of q_1s, the probability that a mu-p atom, which is initially formed in an excited state, reaches the 1s ground state. The dependence of q_1s on deuterium concentration c_d was measured for two different densities at cryogenic temperatures using charge coupled devices (CCDs) to detect the muonic X rays. First results based on the analysis of the K_alpha-lines of the two isotopes are presented.
In this paper we report calculations of potential energy curves in the $1.2 a.u.\le R\le100 a.u.$ range at Multireference Configuration Interaction (MRCI) level for doubly excited states of the H$_2$ molecule. We have focused on the $Q_2$ states which lie between the second and third ionization thresholds of H$_2^+$ molecular ion, i.e., $^2Σ_u^+$ state in which lie the H(2l) + H(2l') dissociation channels. The MRCI approach allowed us to successfully identify for the first time the molecular state which dissociates into hydrogen atoms at 2s state. Further, Generalized Oscillator Strength as a …
The two-loop self-energy correction to the Lamb shift of hydrogen-like ions is calculated for the $1s$, $2s$, and $2p_{1/2}$ states and nuclear charge numbers $Z = 30$-$100$. The calculation is performed to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Zα$. As compared to previous calculations of this correction, numerical accuracy is improved by an order of magnitude and the region of the nuclear charges is extended. An analysis of the $Z$-dependence of the obtained results demonstrates their consistency with the known $Zα$-expansion coefficients.
In this paper it is shown that if one accept assumption of de Broglie that "unitary wave-particle" exists simultaneously and this coexistence is real, then one can find the mean life time of the hydrogen atom of Bohr (intensities). Something more, the acceptance of de Broglie's ideas show that a single excited hydrogen atom decays at exactly predictable moment (after excitation). The natural width of excited hydrogen atoms are found using the Bohr's model of this atom and de Broglie's ideas. The mean life time of the excited states is a characteristic only of a statistical ensemble of many ato…
The processes of electron excitation, capture, and ionization were investigated in proton collisions with atomic hydrogen in the initial $n=1$ and $n=2$ states at impact energies from 1 to 300 keV. The theoretical analysis is based on the close-coupling two-center basis generator method in the semiclassical approximation. Calculated cross sections are compared with previous results which include data obtained from classical-trajectory Monte Carlo, convergent close-coupling, and other two-center atomic orbital expansion approaches. There is an overall good agreement in the capture and excitatio…
The long-range interaction of excited neutral atoms has a number of interesting and surprising properties, such as the prevalence of long-range, oscillatory tails, and the emergence of numerically large can der Waals C_6 coefficients. Furthermore, the energetically quasi-degenerate nP states require special attention and lead to mathematical subtleties. Here, we analyze the interaction of excited hydrogen atoms in nS states (3 <= n <= 12) with ground-state hydrogen atoms, and find that the C_6 coefficients roughly grow with the fourth power of the principal quantum number, and can reach values…
The deexcitation of exotic hydrogen atoms in highly excited states in collisions with hydrogen molecules has been studied using the classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method. The Coulomb transitions with large change of principal quantum number n have been found to be the dominant collisional deexcitation mechanism at high n. The molecular structure of the hydrogen target is shown to be essential for the dominance of transitions with large Δn. The external Auger effect has been studied in the eikonal approximation. The resulting partial wave cross-sections are consistent with unitarity and provi…
The atomic cascades in mu-p and pbar-p atoms have been studied in detail using new results for the cross-sections of the scattering of highly excited exotic atoms from molecular hydrogen. The cascade calculations have been done with an updated version of the extended standard cascade model that computes the evolution in the kinetic energy from the beginning of the cascade. The resulting X-ray yields, kinetic energy distributions, and cascade times are compared with the experimental data.
We compute the energy level displacement of the excited np states of kaonic hydrogen within the quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant model of strong low-energy bar-KN interactions suggested in EPJA21, 11 (2004). For the width of the energy level of the excited 2p state of kaonic hydrogen, caused by strong low-energy interactions, we find Gamma_2p = 2 meV. This result is important for the theoretical analysis of the X-ray yields in kaonic hydrogen.
Current situation in studies of mean lifetimes of excited electronic-vibro-rotational states of hydrogen molecule (including the H2, D2, HD and T2 isotopomers) is reviewed in brief. All measured values of the lifetimes (published before November 2008) are collected and presented in tabular form. Complete bibliography of papers devoted to semi-empirical determination and non-empirical calculation of the lifetimes is presented. The experimental data obtained in various papers are compared with the results of semi-empirical determination and non-empirical calculations.
In this paper, we describe an experiment which was conducted to explore the macro-coherent amplification mechanism using a two-photon emission process from the first vibrationally-excited state of para-hydrogen molecule. Large coherence in the initial state was prepared by the adiabatic Raman population transfer method, and the lowest Stokes sideband was used as a trigger field. We observed the coherent two-photon emission consistent with the expectation of the paired super-radiance master equation.
In the recent work of Herath et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 043004 (2012)] the first experimental observation of a dependence of strong-field ionization rate on the sign of the magnetic quantum number m (of the initial bound state (n,l.m)) was reported. The experiment with nearly circularly polarized light could not distinguish which sign of m favors faster ionization. We perform ab initio calculations for the hydrogen atom initially in one of the four bound sub states with the principal quantum number n=2 and irradiated by a short circularly polarized laser pulse of 800nm. In the intensity ran…
The theory of the long-range interaction of metastable excited atomic states with ground-state atoms is analyzed. We show that the long-range interaction is essentially modified when quasi-degenerate states are available for virtual transitions. A discrepancy in the literature regarding the van der Waals coefficient C_6(2S;1S) describing the interaction of metastable atomic hydrogen (2S state) with a ground-state hydrogen atom is resolved. In the the van der Waals range a_0 << R << a_0/alpha, where a_0= hbar/(alpha m c) is the Bohr radius and alpha is the fine structure constant, one finds the…
The importance of the excited states of Positronium (Ps) in the formation cross sections(both differential and total) of the negative hydrogen ion (H^-) are investigated theoretically for the charge transfer reaction, Ps (n = 1, 2) + H --> e+ + H^- for a wide range of incident energies (e. g., threshold - 500 eV) . The calculations are performed in the frame work of a qualitative model, the post collisional Coulomb Modified Eikonal Approximation (CMEA) . A comparative study is also made between the capture from ground and excited states of the Ps. The present CMEA model takes account of higher…
The energy level displacements of the excited nl states of pionic hydrogen and the contribution of the ns -> 1s transitions and the (pi^-p)_Coul -> 1s transitions of the pi^-p pair, coupled by the attractive Coulomb field in the S-wave state with a continuous energy spectrum, to the shift of the energy level of the ground state of pionic hydrogen, caused by strong low-energy interactions, are calculated within a quantum field theoretic, relativistic covariant and model-independent approach developed in nucl-th/0306047.
State-dependent quantum electrodynamic corrections are evaluated for the hyperfine splitting of nS states for arbitrary principal quantum number n. The calculations comprise both the self-energy and the vacuum-polarization correction of order alpha(Z alpha)^2 E_F and the recoil correction of order (Z alpha)^2 (m/M) E_F. Higher-order corrections are summarized and partly reevaluated as well. Accurate predictions for hydrogen hyperfine splitting intervals of nS states with n=2,...,8 are presented. The results obtained are important due to steady progress in hydrogen spectroscopy for transitions …
We observed two-photon emission signals from the first vibrationally excited state of parahydrogen gas excited coherently by counter-propagating laser pulses. A single narrow-linewidth laser source was used to excite the parahydrogen molecules and induce the two-photon emission process. We measured how the signal energy depended on the detuning, target gas pressure, and input pulse energies. These results are qualitatively consistent with those obtained by numerical simulations based on the Maxwell-Bloch equations with one spatial dimension and one temporal dimension. This study of two-photon …
The problem of the evaluation of the two-photon decay width of excited states in hydrogen is considered. Two different approaches to the evaluation of the width including cascades channels are employed: the summation of the transition probabilities for various decay channels and the evaluation of the imaginary part of the Lamb shift. As application the decay channels for the 3s level of the hydrogen atom are evaluated, including the cascade transition probability 3s-2p-1s as well as "pure" two-photon decay probability and the interference between both channels. An important role should be assi…
The relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches for the calculations of the two-photon decay rates of highly excited states in hydrogen are compared. The dependence on the principal quantum number (n) of the ns, nd, and np initial states is investigated up to n = 100 for the nonresonant emissions. For the ns states together with the main E1E1 channel the contributions of higher multipoles (M1M1, E2E2, E1M2) are considered. For the np states the E1M1 and E1E2 channels are evaluated. Moreover, the simple analytical formula for the E1M1 decay is derived in the nonrelativistic limit.
The lowest bound states of the hydrogen negative ion and negative donor systems in a homogeneous magnetic field are investigated theoretically via a full configuration interaction approach with an anisotropic Gaussian basis set. The broad magnetic field regime γ=0.0008 - 4000 is covered. Nonrelativistic total energies, electron detachment energies and transition wavelengths are presented assuming an infinite nuclear mass. The binding mechanisms are discussed in detail. The accuracy for the energies is enhanced significantly compared to previously published data.
The interaction of two excited hydrogen atoms in metastable states constitutes a theoretically interesting problem because of the quasi-degenerate 2P_{1/2} levels which are removed from the 2S states only by the Lamb shift. The total Hamiltonian of the system is composed of the van der Waals Hamiltonian, the Lamb shift and the hyperfine effects. The van der Waals shift becomes commensurate with the 2S-2P_{3/2} fine-structure splitting only for close approach (R < 100 a_0, where a_0 is the Bohr radius) and one may thus restrict the discussion to the levels with n=2 and J=1/2 to good approximati…
Based on quantum electrodynamics, we reexamine the two-photon decay of one-electron atoms. Special attention is paid to the calculation of the (two-photon) total decay rates which can be viewed as the imaginary part of the two-loop self-energy. We argue that our approach can easily be applied to the cases with a virtual state having an intermediate energy between the initial and the final state of the decay process leading, thus, to the resonance peaks in the two-photon energy distribution. In order to illustrate our approach, we obtain fully relativistic results, resolved into electric and ma…
The differential and total cross sections for the scattering of muonic, pionic, kaonic and antiprotonic hydrogen in excited states from atomic hydrogen have been calculated for the purpose of atomic cascade calculations. The scattering problem is treated in a fully quantum mechanical framework which takes the energy shifts and, in the case of the hadronic atoms, the widths of the ns states into account. The validity of semiclassical approximations is critically examined.
We study the theoretical foundations for the pressure shifts in high-precision atomic beam spectrosopy of hydrogen, with a particular emphasis on transitions involving higher excited P states. In particular, the long-range interaction of an excited hydrogen atom in a 4P state with a ground-state and metastable hydrogen atom is studied, with a full resolution of the hyperfine structure. It is found that the full inclusion of the 4P_1/2 and 4P_3/2 manifolds becomes necessary in order to obtain reliable theoretical predictions, because the 1S ground state hyperfine frequency is commensurate with …
Energy-conserving, angular momentum-changing collisions between protons and highly excited Rydberg hydrogen atoms are important for precise understanding of atomic recombination at the photon decoupling era, and the elemental abundance after primordial nucleosynthesis. Early approaches to $\ell$-changing collisions used perturbation theory for only dipole-allowed ($Δ\ell=\pm 1$) transitions. An exact non-perturbative quantum mechanical treatment is possible, but it comes at computational cost for highly excited Rydberg states. In this note we show how to obtain a semi-classical limit that is a…
We investigate the Rydberg states generation of Hydrogen atoms with intense laser pulses, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and by means of classical trajectory monte-carlo simulations. Both linearly polarized multi-cycle pulses and pairs of optical half cycle pulses are used. Comparisons between these methods show that both the Coulomb force and initial lateral momentum, which have effects on the $n$-distribution and $l$-distribution of the population of excited states, are important in the generation of Rydberg states.
We present the results of numerical calculations of magnetizability ($χ$) of the relativistic one-electron atoms with a pointlike, spinless and motionless nuclei of charge $Ze$. Exploiting the analytical formula for $χ$ recently derived by us [P. Stefa{ń}ska, 2015], valid for an arbitrary discrete energy eigenstate, we have found the values of the magnetizability for the ground state and for the first and the second set of excited states (i.e.: $2s_{1/2}$, $2p_{1/2}$, $2p_{3/2}$, $3s_{1/2}$, $3p_{1/2}$, $3p_{3/2}$, $3d_{3/2}$, and $3d_{5/2}$) of the Dirac one-electron atom. The results for ion…
We propose a laser cooling technique in which atoms are selectively excited to a dressed metastable state whose light shift and decay rate are spatially correlated for Sisyphus cooling. The case of cooling magnetically trapped (anti)hydrogen with the 1S-2S-3P transitions using pulsed ultra violet and continuous-wave visible lasers is numerically simulated. We find a number of appealing features including rapid 3-dimensional cooling from ~1 K to recoil-limited, millikelvin temperatures, as well as suppressed spin-flip loss and manageable photoionization loss.
We calculate the two-photon 1S-2S spectrum of an atomic hydrogen Bose-Einstein condensate in the regime where the cold collision frequency shift dominates the lineshape. WKB and static phase approximations are made to find the intensities for transitions from the condensate to motional eigenstates for 2S atoms. The excited state wave functions are found using a mean field potential which includes the effects of collisions with condensate atoms. Results agree well with experimental data. This formalism can be used to find condensate spectra for a wide range of excitation schemes.
The direct transition-matrix approach to the description of the electric polarization of the quantum bound system of particles is used to determine the electric multipole polarizabilities of the hydrogen-like atoms. It is shown that in the case of the bound system formed by the Coulomb interaction the corresponding inhomogeneous integral equation determining an off-shell scattering function, which consistently describes virtual multiple scattering, can be solved exactly analytically for all electric multipole polarizabilities. Our method allows to reproduce the known Dalgarno-Lewis formula for…
We propose and analyze the possibility of performing two-photon continuous-wave Doppler-cooling of hydrogen atoms using the 1S-2S transition. "Quenching" of the 2S level (by coupling with the 2P state) is used to increase the cycling frequency, and to control the equilibrium temperature. Theoretical and numerical studies of the heating effect due to Doppler-free two-photon transitions evidence an increase of the temperature by a factor of two. The equilibrium temperature decreases with the effective (quenching dependent) width of the excited state and can thus be adjusted up to values close to…
Stochastic ionization of highly excited relativistic hydrogenlike atom in the monochromatic field is considered. A theoretical analisis of chaotic dynamics of the electron based on Chirikov's criterion is given. Critical value of the external field is evaluated analytically.
Precision measurements are performed on highly excited vibrational quantum states of molecular hydrogen. The $v=12, J=0-3$ rovibrational levels of H$_2$ ($X^1Σ_g^+$), lying only $2000$ cm$^{-1}$ below the first dissociation limit, were populated by photodissociation of H$_2$S and their level energies were accurately determined by two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy. A comparison between the experimental results on $v=12$ level energies with the best \textit{ab initio} calculations shows good agreement, where the present experimental accuracy of $3.5 \times10^{-3}$ cm$^{-1}$ is more precise th…
The static and dynamic electric multipolar polarizabilities and second hyperpolarizabilities of the H$_2^+$, D$_2^+$, and HD$^+$ molecular ions in the ground and first excited states are calculated nonrelativistically using explicitly correlated Hylleraas basis sets. The calculations are fully nonadiabatic; the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is not used. Comparisons are made with published theoretical and experimental results, where available. In our approach, no derivatives of energy functions nor derivatives of response functions are needed. In particular, we make contact with earlier calcul…
The collisional shift of a transition constitutes an important systematic effect in high-precision spectroscopy. Accurate values for van der Waalsinteraction coefficients are required in order to evaluate the distance-dependent frequency shift. We here consider the interaction of excited hydrogen 6P atoms with metastable atoms (in the 2S state), in order to explore the influence of quasi-degenerate 2P, and 6S states on the dipole-dipole interaction. The motivation for the calculation is given by planned high-precision measurements of the transition. Due to the presence of quasi-degenerate leve…
A rigorous QED theory of the multiphoton decay of excited states in hydrogen atom is presented. The "two-photon" approximation is formulated which is limited by the one-photon and two-photon transitions including cascades transitions with two-photon links. This may be helpful for the strict description of the recombination process in hydrogen atom and, in principle, for the history of the hydrogen recombination in the early Universe.
Motional Stark effect (MSE) spectroscopy represents a unique diagnostic tool capable of determining the magnitude of the magnetic field and its direction in the core of fusion plasmas. The primary excitation channel for fast hydrogen atoms in injected neutral beams, with energy in the range of 25-1000 keV, is due to collisions with protons and impurity ions (e.g., He$^{2+}$ and heavier impurities). As a result of such excitation, at the particle density of 10$^{13}$-10$^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$, the line intensities of the Stark multiplets do not follow statistical expectations (i.e., the populations o…
The tunneling ionization of a hydrogen atom excited in the presence of a static electric field is investigated for the case where, before being extracted, the electron has an orbital angular momentum L perpendicular to the field E. The escaping electron has a nonzero mean transverse velocity <vT> in the direction of E cross <L>. This asymmetry is similar to the Collins effect in the fragmentation into hadrons of a transversely polarized quark. In addition, the linear Stark effect make <L> and <vT> oscillate in time. The degree of asymmetry is calculated at leading order in E for an initial sta…
Expressions for energy and angular momentum changes of the hydrogen atom due to interaction with the electromagnetic field during the period of the electron motion in the Coulomb field are derived. It is shown that only the energy change for the motion between two subsequent passings of the pericenter is related to the quasiclassical dipole matrix element for transitions between excited states.
Stochastic ionization of highly excited relativistic hydrogenlike atom in the monochromatic field is investigated. A theoretical analisis of chaotic dynamics of the relativistic electron based on Chirikov criterion is given for the cases of one- and three-dimensional atoms. Critical value of the external field is evaluated analitically. The diffusion coefficient and ionization time are calculated.
The analysis of correlation energy of the simplest first approximation of a variational method for the intrashell states of two-electron atoms is the purpose of the present work. This method allows to divide energy of atom on Coulomb and additional not - Coulomb correlation parts with very high accuracy. Thus all the Coulomb interaction completely is taken into account in calculation and not-Coulomb terms enter only in additional correlation energy. The general formula for energy of additional correlation interaction is obtained and the constant of this interaction is determined. The algorithm…
Excitation and charge transfer in low-energy O+H collisions is studied; it is a problem of importance for modelling stellar spectra and obtaining accurate oxygen abundances in late-type stars including the Sun. The collisions have been studied theoretically using a previously presented method based on an asymptotic two-electron linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) model of ionic-covalent interactions in the neutral atom-hydrogen-atom system, together with the multichannel Landau-Zener model. The method has been extended to include configurations involving excited states of hydrogen usi…
We consider a gas of hydrogen atoms illuminated by a broadband, unpolarized radiation with zero anisotropy. In the absence of external fields, the atomic J-levels are thus isotropically populated. While this condition persists in the presence of a magnetic field, we show instead that electric fields can induce the alignment of those levels. We also show that this electric alignment cannot occur in a two-term model of hydrogen (e.g., if only the Ly-alpha transition is excited), or if the level populations are distributed according to Boltzmann's law.
The self-energy corrections to the hyperfine splitting is evaluated for higher excited states in hydrogenlike ions, using an expansion in the binding parameter Zalpha, where Z is the nuclear charge number, and alpha is the fine-structure constant. We present analytic results for D, F and G states, and for a number of highly excited Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers in the range 13 <= n <= 16, and orbital angular momenta l = n-2 and l = n-1. A closed-form, analytic expression is derived for the contribution of high-energy photons, valid for any state with l <= 2$ and arbitrary n, l …
The present theoretical work addresses the study of the formation of a positive Antihydrogen ion in a single charge exchange reaction where a positronium ( ground or excited state) interacts with a ground state anti-hydrogen atom, being embedded in a dense Debye plasma. The calculations are carried out in the frame work of a Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The result shows that Ps(3S) is the most interesting state to enhance the anti H^+ production at the energy close to the reaction threshold. Regarding the Debye screening, it may be inferred that in lower energy regime, the screenin…
The question of whether hydrogen atoms can exist or not in spaces with a number of dimensions greater than 3 is revisited, considering higher dimensional Euclidean spaces. Previous results which lead to different answers to this question are briefly reviewed. The scenario where not only the kinematical term of Schrödinger equation is generalized to a D-dimensional space but also the electric charge conservation law (expressed here by the Poisson law) should actually remains valid is assumed. In this case, the potential energy in the Schrödinger equation goes like 1/r^{D-2}. The lowest quantum …
The low energy scattering of heavy positively charged particles on hydrogen atoms (H) are investigated by solving the Faddeev equations in configuration space. A resonant value of the pH scattering length, $a=750\pm 5$ a.u., in the pp antisymmetric state was found. This large value indicates the existence of a first excited state with a binding energy B=1.14$\times10^{-9}$ a.u. below the H ground state. Several resonances for non zero angular momenta states are predicted.
We report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering, target-elastic Ps excitations and target-inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. The present model yields a singlet Ps-H S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV. We also study the effect of the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme…
