We theoretically study the problem of detecting dipole radiation in an optical system of high numerical aperture in which the detector is sensitive to \textit{field amplitude}. In particular, we model the phase sensitive detector as a single-mode cylindrical optical fiber. We find that the maximum in collection efficiency of the dipole radiation does not coincide with the optimum resolution for the light gathering instrument. The calculated results are important for analyzing fiber-based confocal microscope performance in fluorescence and spectroscopic studies of single molecules and/or quantum dots.
The use of individual multimode optical fibers in endoscopy applications has the potential to provide highly miniaturized and noninvasive probes for microscopy and optical micromanipulation. A few different strategies have been proposed recently, but they all suffer from intrinsically low resolution related to the low numerical aperture of multimode fibers. Here, we show that two-photon polymerization allows for direct fabrication of micro-optics components on the fiber end, resulting in an increase of the numerical aperture to a value that is close to 1. Coupling light into the fiber through …
We consider the problem of radiation into free space from the end-facet of a single-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF). We calculate the numerical aperture NA=sin theta from the half-divergence angle theta ~ tan^{-1}(lambda/pi w) with pi w^2 being the effective area of the mode in the PCF. For the fiber first presented by Knight et al. we find a numerical aperture NA ~ 0.07 which compares to standard fiber technology. We also study the effect of different hole sizes and demonstrate that the PCF technology provides a large freedom for NA-engineering. Comparing to experiments we find good agreeme…
Optical fiber with high numerical aperture (NA) can efficiently relieve the degeneracy of higher order linearly polarized modes. The degeneracy relief is investigated in two types of high NA fibers, i.e., low index cladding fiber and high-index-core fiber. A naked core fiber, as with low index cladding, can be used theoretically to generate the orbital angular momentum mode (OAMM) HE21 and the cylindrically symmetric modes (CSMs) TM01 and TE01. A high index core fiber incorporated with high contrast index structure can be used similarly to obtain OAMM HE31. The generation of both CSMs and OAMM…
We show that the output mode of a single-mode optical fiber can be directly focused to a sub-wavelength waist with a finite working distance by tapering the fiber to a diameter of the order of the wavelength and terminating it with a spherically/hemispherically shaped tip. Numerical simulations show that a beam waist with a width of as small as 0.62λcan be formed. We fabricate micro-lensed fibers and construct a probe-scanning confocal reflection microscope. Measurements on gold nano-particles show a spatial profile with a width of 0.29λfor λ= 850 nm, which is in good agreement with the numeri…
We present broadband group velocity dispersion (GVD) measurements of commercially available ultra-high numerical aperture fibers (UHNA1, UHNA3, UHNA4, UHNA7 and PM2000D from Coherent-Nufern). Although these fibers are attractive for dispersion management in ultrafast fiber laser systems in the 2 μm wavelength region, experimental dispersion data in literature is scarce and inconsistent. Here we demonstrate the measurements using the spectral interferometry technique covering the typically used erbium, thulium and holmium emission bands. The results are characterized in terms of the standard-de…
Plasmonic nano-antennas have proven the outstanding ability of sensing chemical and physical processes down to the nano-meter scale. Sensing is usually achieved within the highly confined optical fields generated resonantly by the nano-antennas, i.e. in contact to the nano-structures. In these paper, We demonstrate the sensing capability of nano-antennas to their larger scale environment, well beyond their plasmonic confinement volume, leading to the concept of 'remote' (non contact) sensing on the nano-meter scale. On the basis of a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) integrated at the apex of…
Scanning near-field field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a technique, which allows sub-wavelength optical imaging of photonic structures. While the electric field components of light can be routinely obtained, imaging of the magnetic components has only recently become of interest. This is so due to the development of artificial materials, which enhance and exploit the typically weak magnetic light-matter interactions to offer extraordinary optical properties. Consequently, both sources and detectors of the magnetic field of light are now required. In this paper, assisted by finite-difference ti…
Direct fiber-coupled soliton microcomb system with enhanced stability and reproducibility via high numerical-aperture polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers and temperature control
Light diffraction through a subwavelength aperture located at the apex of a metallic screen with conical geometry is investigated theoretically. A method based on a multipole field expansion is developed to solve Maxwell's equations analytically using boundary conditions adapted both for the conical geometry and for the finite conductivity of a real metal. The topological properties of the diffracted field are discussed in detail and compared to those of the field diffracted through a small aperture in a flat screen, i. e. the Bethe problem. The model is applied to coated, conically tapered op…
We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that in fiber tips as they are used in NSOMs azimuthally polarized electrical fields (|E$_{\text{azi}}$|$^2$/|E$_{\text{tot}}$|$^2$ $\approx$ 55% $\pm $ 5% for 1.4μm tip aperture diameter and λ$_0$ = 1550nm), respectively subwavelength confined (FWHM $\approx$ 450nm $\approx$ λ$_0$/3.5) magnetic fields, are generated for a certain tip aperture diameter (d = 1.4μm). We attribute the generation of this field distribution in metal-coated fiber tips to symmetry breaking in the bend and subsequent plasmonic mode filtering in the truncated conical taper.
We develop a semi-analytical method for analyzing surface plasmon interferometry using near-field scanning optical sources. We compare our approach to Young double hole interferometry experiments using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) discussed in the literature and realize experiments with an aperture near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) source positioned near a ring like aperture slit milled in a thick gold film. In both cases the agreement between experiments and model is very good. We emphasize the role of dipole orientations and discuss the role of magnetic versus electric dip…
We theoretically investigate the interaction of a single quantum dipole with the modes of a fiber-coupled semiconductor waveguide. Through a combination of tight modal confinement and phase-matched evanescent coupling, we predict that approximately 70 % of the dipole's emission can be collected into a single mode optical fiber. Calculations further show that the dipole strongly modifies resonant light transmission through the system, with over an order of magnitude change possible for an appropriate choice of fiber-waveguide coupler geometry.
We propose a feedback-assisted direct laser writing method to perform laser ablation of fiber optics devices in which their light-collection signal is used to optimize their properties. A femtosecond-pulsed laser beam is used to ablate a metal coating deposited around a tapered optical fiber, employed to show the suitability of the approach to pattern devices with small radius of curvature. During processing, the same pulses generate two-photon fluorescence in the surrounding environment and the signal is monitored to identify different patterning regimes over time through spectral analysis. T…
The generality of the Bethe's two dipole model for light diffraction through a subwavelength aperture in a conducting plane is studied in the radiation zone for coated conical fiber tips as those used in near field scanning optical microscopy. In order to describe the angular radiated power of the tip theoretically, we present a simple, analytical model for small apertures (radius < 40 nm) based on a multipole expansion. Our model is able to reproduce the available experimental results. It proves relatively insensitive to cone angle and aperture radius and contains, as a first approximation, t…
Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) has been successful in finely tuning the optical properties of photonic crystal (PC) nanocavities. The SNOM nanoprobes proposed so far allowed for either redshifting or blueshifting the resonance peak of the PC structures. In this Letter, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of redshifting (up to +0.65nm) and blueshifting (up to $-5$~nm) PC cavity resonance with a single SNOM probe. This probe is obtained by opening a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) at the apex of a metal-coated tip. This double-way PC tunability is the result of a compe…
The finite-difference time-domain method was employed to simulate light propagation in tapered near-field fiber probes with small metal aperture. By conducting large-volume simulations, including tapered metal-cladding waveguide and connected optical fiber waveguide, we illustrated the coupling between these guiding modes as well as the electric field distribution in the vicinity of the aperture. The high collection efficiency of a double-tapered probe was reproduced and was ascribed to the shortening of the cutoff region and the efficient coupling to the guiding mode of the optical fiber. The…
We present an ultra-thin hybrid imaging system based on an optical multimode fiber (MMF) and an optical fiber hydrophone that combines optical resolution photoacoustic and fluorescence microscopy. To control the illumination at the distal tip of the MMF, a digital micromirror device modulates the amplitude of the optical wavefront which is coupled into the MMF. A set of pre-calibrated speckle illuminations combined with a reconstruction algorithm enables photoacoustic and fluorescence imaging of samples located at the distal tip of the fiber with optical resolution determined by the numerical …
This paper reports on the excitation of surface plasmons on gold-coated nanofibre tips by side-illumination with a laser beam and the coupling of the surface plasmons to the optical fiber. The measurements show a strong dependence of the coupling efficiency on the incidence angle with a maximum coupling efficiency on the order of few percent. Moreover, the fibre tip was used as scanning probe device for measuring the beam waist of a focussed laser beam. This work is motivated by the goal to use such plasmonic nanofibre tips in quantum optics experiments with cold atoms.
We report on the generation of 6.1 mJ, 3.8 fs pulses by the compression of a kHz Ti:sapphire laser in a large-aperture long hollow fiber. In order to find optimal conditions for spectral broadening at high pulse energies, we explore different parameter ranges where ionization or the Kerr effect dominates. After identifying the optimum parameter settings, large spectral broadening at high waveguide transmission is obtained. The intense 1.5-cycle pulses are used for high-harmonic generation in argon and neon.
A wavelength-tunable Optical Fiber Tweezer (OFT) based on a Graded Index Multimode Fiber (GIMF) with a flat endface is proposed. It is shown that the design can support a trapping position which is far from the tip of the GIMF compared with other common optical tweezing methods, hence reducing the possibility of a contact between the trapped particle and the fiber tip. Moreover, because of the wavelength dependence of the GIMF design parameters such the Numerical Aperture (NA), the trapping position can become wavelength-dependent. Therefore, the trapping position can be tuned over a long rang…
We report on an ytterbium-free erbium-doped aluminophosphosilicate all-fiber laser, producing an output power of 25 W at a wavelength of 1584 nm with a slope efficiency of 30% with respect to the 976 nm absorbed pump power. The simple cavity design proposed takes advantage of fiber Bragg gratings written directly in the gain fiber. The single-mode erbium-doped aluminophosphosilicate fiber was fabricated in-house and was doped with 0.06 mol.% of Er2O3, 1.77 mol.% of Al2O3 and 1.04 mol.% of P2O5. The incorporation of aluminium and phosphorus into the fiber core allowed for an increased concentra…
A simplification strategy for Segmented Mirror Splitters (SMS) used as beam combiners is presented. These devices are useful for compact beam division and combination of linear and 2-D arrays. However, the standard design requires unique thin-film coating sections for each input beam and thus potential for scaling to high beam-counts is limited due to manufacturing complexity. Taking advantage of the relative insensitivity of the beam combination process to amplitude variations, numerical techniques are used to optimize highly-simplified designs with only one, two or three unique coatings. It …
The optical interaction of light and matter is modeled as an oscillating dipole in a plane wave. We analyze absorption, scattering and extinction for this system by the energy flow, which is depicted by streamlines of the Poynting vector. Depending on the dissipative damping of the oscillator, the streamlines end up in the dipole. Based on a graphical investigation of the streamlines, this represents the absorption cross section, and forms a far-field absorption aperture. In the near-field of the oscillator, a modification of the aperture is observed. This scheme can be adapted to a single dip…
We developed a new holmium-doped triple-clad fiber (Ho-3CF), reducing the clad diameter to improve the overlap between pump and doped-core, and the holmium concentration to reduce the influence of ion clustering on the laser efficiency. We illustrate here the performance of this fiber in a laser oscillator configuration. The laser emission is centered at 2.12 $μ$m by a fiber Bragg grating, and the active fiber is pumped in the clad by a 1.94 $μ$m thulium-doped fiber laser. The slope efficiency reaches 73% with respect to absorbed power (60% considering coupled power), for a maximum signal powe…
Optical fiber is a well-established efficient way to guide and manipulate light and allowing high bandwidth optical transmission for long distance communication with low attenuation. Although a dielectric optical waveguide is efficient for transmitting light, its functionality is limited by the dielectric properties of the materials of core and cladding. The light coming out from optical fiber is typically diverging, and the numerical aperture is determined by the refractive index of the fiber materials. Thus, the light intensity decreases significantly upon exiting the fiber. The use of metasu…
In this work, we present an analysis of the influence of the geometrical parameters on the sensitivity and linear range of the fiber optic angular displacement sensor, through computational simulations and experiments. The geometrical parameters analyzed were the lens focal length, the gap between fibers, the fibers cladding radii, the emitting fiber critical angle (or, equivalently, the emitting fiber numerical aperture), and the standoff distance (distance between the lens and the reflective surface). Besides, we analyzed the sensor sensitivity regarding any spurious linear displacement. The…
We present a brief overview of the transport of quantum light across a one-dimensional waveguide which is integrated with a periodic string of quantum-scale dipoles. We demonstrate a scheme to implement transparency by suitably tuning the atomic frequencies without applying a coupling field and bring out the pronounced non-reciprocity of this optical device. The fiber-mediated interaction between integrated dipoles allows one to achieve both dispersive and dissipative couplings, level repulsion and attraction, and enhanced sensing capabilities. All these ideas can be translated to a wide varie…
We propose to use high numerical aperture single mode optical fibers like photonic crystal fiber for lensless in-line holographic microscopy. Highly divergent beam helps to overcome the spatial sampling limitation of the image sensor. In this paper, a submicron lateral resolution has been demonstrated, with an imaging sensor of pixel pitch 1.12 micrometer and a photonic crystal fiber of mode field diameter 1.8 micrometer. In earlier methods of single-shot lensless imaging, submicron resolution has been obtained at very small working distance and field of view. The proposed method improves the …
We demonstrate in vivo endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging in the forward direction using a flexible fiber bundle. In comparison to current conventional forward looking probe schemes, our approach simplifies the endoscope design by avoiding the integration of any beam steering components in the distal probe end due to 2D scanning of a focused light beam over the proximal fiber bundle surface. We describe the challenges that arise when OCT imaging with a fiber bundle is performed, such as multimoding or cross-coupling. The performance of different fiber bundles with varying pa…
We analyse how a probing particle modifies infrared electromagnetic near fields. The particle, assimilated to both electric and magnetic dipoles, represents the tip of an apertureless scanning optical near-field microscope (SNOM). We show that the interaction can be accounted for by ascribing to the particle effective dipole polarizabilities that add the effect of retardation to the one of the image dipole. Apart from these polarizabilities, the SNOM signal expression depends only on the fields without tip perturbation, shown to be closely related to the electromagnetic density of states (EM-L…
We present simulations of an efficient high numerical aperture solid immersion metalens concept for fluorescence microscopy. The technique exploits the preferential emission of interfacial dipoles into a high refractive index substrate combined with a metalens and a conventional tube lens for imaging them. We have thus simulated dipole emission and an all-dielectric metasurface on opposite sides of a high refractive index substrate. Our calculations predict dipole collection efficiencies of up to 87 percent. The simulated beam propagation through the imaging system shows excellent performance …
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the three-dimensional orientation of a single fluorescent nano-emitter can be determined by polarization analysis of the emitted light (while excitation polarization analysis provides only the in-plane orientation). The determination of the emitter orientation by polarimetry requires a theoretical description including the objective numerical aperture, the 1D or 2D nature of the emitting dipole and the environment close to the dipole. We develop a model covering most experimentally relevant microscopy configurations and provide analytical re…
We used Geometric Algebra to compute the paths of skew rays in a cylindrical, step-index multimode optical fiber. To do this, we used the vector addition form for the law of propagation, the exponential of an imaginary vector form for the law of refraction, and the juxtaposed vector product form for the law of reflection. In particular, the exponential forms of the vector rotations enables us to take advantage of the addition or subtraction of exponential arguments of two rotated vectors in the derivation of the ray tracing invariants in cylindrical and spherical coordinates. We showed that th…
Colloidal Quantum dots (CQDs) are nowadays one of the cornerstones of modern photonics as they have led to the emergence of new optoelectronic and biomedical technologies. However, the full characterization of these quantum emitters is currently restricted to the visible wavelengths and it remains a key challenge to optically probe single CQDs operating in the infrared spectral domain which is targeted by a growing number of applications. Here, we report the first experimental detection and imaging at room temperature of single infrared CQDs operating at telecommunication wavelengths. Imaging …

Cold plasma of power 13W has been applied on step index plastic optical fibers. It is used to study the ability for any variations in the optical parameters that are effective in communication. The effect of plasma on the optical parameters, such as core index profile, cladding index and the numerical aperture, has been studied by multiple beam interference fringes. The interference fringes have been processed using a homemade Matlab written program to get more accurate measurements. It is found that there is an increase of 1.5839 in core index, at core-clad interface, with a plasma exposure t…
Incorporating solid-state quantum emitters into optical fiber networks enables the long-distance transmission of quantum information and the remote connection of distributed quantum nodes. However, interfacing quantum emitters with fiber optics encounters several challenges, including low coupling efficiency and stability. Here, we demonstrate a highly efficient fiber-interfacing photonic device that directly launches single photons from quantum dots into a standard FC/PC-connectorized single-mode fiber (SMF28). Optimally designed photonic structures based on hole gratings produce an ultra-nar…
Niobium telluride (NbTe$_2$), an emerging transition metal dichalcogenide material, has been theoretically predicted to have nonlinear absorption properties and excellent optical response. However, only a few studies of the utilization of NbTe$_2$ in ultrafast photonics have been reported. In this work, a NbTe$_2$-based saturable absorber (SA) was applied in an erbium-doped fiber as a mode-locked device, and a vector soliton based on NbTe$_2$ was obtained for the first time. NbTe$_2$-PVA film SA was successfully prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation and spin coating methods, with a modulati…

We consider the effective area A_eff of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a triangular air-hole lattice in the cladding. It is first of all an important quantity in the context of non-linearities, but it also has connections to leakage loss, macro-bending loss, and numerical aperture. Single-mode versus multi-mode operation in PCFs can also be studied by comparing effective areas of the different modes. We report extensive numerical studies of PCFs with varying air hole size. Our results can be scaled to a given pitch and thus provide a general map of the effective area. We also use the conc…
To manipulate cold atoms in spatially constrained quantum engineering platforms, we developed a lensless optical system with a $\sim$1 $μ$m resolution and a transverse size of only 225 $μ$m. We use a multimode optical fiber with a high numerical aperture, which directly guides light inside the ultra-high-vacuum system. Spatial light modulators allow us to generate control beams at the in-vacuum fiber end by digital optical phase conjugation. As a demonstration, we use this system to optically transport cold atoms towards the in-vacuum fiber end, to load them in optical microtraps and to re-coo…
We present a design strategy for selecting the effective polarizability distribution for a metasurface aperture needed to form a desired radiation pattern. A metasurface aperture consists of an array of subwavelength metamaterial elements, each of which can be conceptualized as a radiating, polarizable dipole. An ideal polarizability distribution can be determined by using a holographic approach to first obtain the necessary aperture fields, which can then be converted to a polarizability distribution using equivalence principles. To achieve this ideal distribution, the polarizability of each …
We report the radiation trapping effect inside a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF). An optical dipole trap was used to load and confine the atoms in the PCF without contacting the wall of the fiber. The transmission of a probe light propagating through the PCF was studied experimentally and theoretically. With the experimental results and theoretical predictions, we conclude that the radiation trapping can play a significant role and should be taken into account in the spectroscopic measurements inside the PCF.
We have designed, built, and characterized a high-resolution objective lens that is compatible with an ultra-high vacuum environment. The lens system exploits the principle of the Weierstrass-sphere solid immersion lens to reach a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.92. Tailored to the requirements of optical lattice experiments, the objective lens features a relatively long working distance of 150 micrometers. Our two-lens design is remarkably insensitive to mechanical tolerances in spite of the large NA. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of a tapered optical fiber tip, as used in scannin…
We experimentally observe the dipole scattering of a nanoparticle using a high numerical aperture (NA) imaging system. The optically levitated nanoparticle provides an environment free of particle-substrate interaction. We illuminate the silica nanoparticle in vacuum with a 532 nm laser beam orthogonally to the propagation direction of the 1064 nm trapping laser beam strongly focused by the same high NA objective used to collect the scattering, which results in a dark background and high signal-noise ratio. The dipole orientations of the nanoparticle induced by the linear polarization of the i…
We propose a novel dipole trapping scheme using spatial light modulators (SLM) for the manipulation of individual atoms. The scheme uses a high numerical aperture microscope to map the intensity distribution of a SLM onto a cloud of cold atoms. The regions of high intensity act as optical dipole force traps. With a SLM fast enough to modify the trapping potential in real time, this technique is well suited for the controlled addressing and manipulation of arbitrarily selected atoms.

Realization of integrated photonic circuits on a single chip requires controlled manipulation and integration of solid-state quantum emitters with nanophotonic components. Previous works focused on emitters embedded in a three-dimensional crystals -- such as nanodiamonds or quantum dots. In contrast, in this work we demonstrate coupling of a single emitter in a two-dimensional (2D) material, namely hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), with a tapered optical fiber and find a collection efficiency of the system is found to be 10~\%. Furthermore, due to the single dipole character of the emitter, we we…
We demonstrate an important step towards on chip integration of single photon sources operating at room temperature fiber coupling of a directional quantum emitter with back-excitation. Directionality is achieved with a hybrid metal-dielectric bullseye antenna, while back-excitation is permitted by placement of the emitter at or in a sub-wavelength hole positioned at the bullseye center. Overall, the unique design enables a direct laser excitation from the back of the on-chip device and very efficient coupling of the highly collimated photon emission to either low numerical aperture (NA) free …
We propose what we believe to be a novel type of optical source for ultra-cold atomic Far Off-Resonance optical-dipole Traps (FORTs). The source is based on an Erbium Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) source that seeds a high power Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). The main interest of this source is its very low coherence length, thus allowing an incoherent superposition of several trapping beams without any optical interference. The behavior of the superimposed beams is then a scalar sum greatly simplifying complex configurations. As an illustration, we report an estimation of the inte…
