We report on the generation of 6.1 mJ, 3.8 fs pulses by the compression of a kHz Ti:sapphire laser in a large-aperture long hollow fiber. In order to find optimal conditions for spectral broadening at high pulse energies, we explore different parameter ranges where ionization or the Kerr effect dominates. After identifying the optimum parameter settings, large spectral broadening at high waveguide transmission is obtained. The intense 1.5-cycle pulses are used for high-harmonic generation in argon and neon.
Hollow core antiresonant fibers offer new possibilities in the near infrared and visible spectral range. I show here that the great flexibility of this technology can allow the design and fabrication of hollow core optical fibers with an extended transmission bandwidth in the near infrared and with very low optical attenuation in the visible wavelength regime. A very low attenuation of 175dB/km at 480nm is reported. A modification of the design of the studied fibers is proposed in order to achieve fast-responding gas detection.
The ultimate limit on fiber loss is set by the intrinsic Rayleigh scattering of silica glass material. Here, we challenge this limit in the visible region by using a hollow-core fiber approach. Two visible-guiding hollow-core conjoined-tube negative-curvature fibers are successfully fabricated and exhibit the overall losses of 3.8 dB/km at 680 nm and 4.9 dB/km at 558 nm respectively. The loss of the latter fiber surpasses the Rayleigh scattering limit of silica glass fiber in the green spectral region by 2 dB. Numerical simulation indicates that this loss level is still much higher than the fu…
Bright, coherent soft X-ray (SXR) radiation is essential to a variety of applications in fundamental research and life sciences. So far, high photon flux in this spectral region can only be delivered by synchrotrons, free electron lasers or high-order harmonic generation (HHG) sources, which are driven by kHz-class repetition rate lasers with very high peak powers. Here, we establish a novel route toward powerful and easy-to-use SXR sources by presenting a compact experiment, in which nonlinear pulse self-compression to the few-cycle regime is combined with phase-matched HHG in a single, heliu…
We report on two types of Raman laser sources emitting in the near and middle ultraviolet spectral ranges by the use of a solarization-resilient gas-filled inhibited-coupling (IC) hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber (HCPCF) with record low transmission loss (minimum of 5 dB/km at 480 nm). The first source type emits a Raman comb generated in a hydrogen-filled HCPCF pumped by a 355 nm wavelength microchip nanosecond pulsed laser. The generated comb lines span from 270 nm to the near-infrared region with no less than 20 lines in the 270-400 nm wavelength range. The second type stands for the firs…
We report generation of a femtosecond supercontinuum extending from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared and detection of its carrier-envelope phase variation by f-to-2f interferometry. The spectrum is generated in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber where soliton dynamics allows CEP-stable self-compression of OPCPA pump pulses at 800 nm to a duration of 1.7 optical cycles, followed by dispersive wave emission. The source provides up to 1 μJ of pulse energy at 800 kHz repetition rate resulting in 0.8 W of average power, and can be extremely useful for example in strong-field physic…
We demonstrate sensitive high-resolution stimulated Raman measurements of hydrogen using a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF). The Raman transition is pumped by a narrow linewidth (<50 kHz) 1064 nm continuous-wave (CW) fiber laser. The probe light is produced by a homebuilt CW optical parametric oscillator (OPO), tunable from around 800 nm to 1300 nm (linewidth ~ 5 MHz). These narrow linewidth lasers allow for an excellent spectral resolution of approximately 10^-4 cm^(-1). The setup employs a differential measurement technique for noise rejection in the probe beam, which also elimina…
A recently developed source of ultraviolet radiation, based on optical soliton propagation in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, is applied here to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Near-infrared femtosecond pulses of only few μJ energy generate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation between 5.5 and 9 eV inside the gas-filled fiber. These pulses are used to measure the band structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 with a signal to noise ratio comparable to that obtained with high order harmonics from a gas jet. The two-order-of-magnitude gain in efficiency promi…
We present two novel hybrid photonic structures made of silica that possess two well-separated frequency bandgaps. The addition of interstitial air holes in a precise location and size allows these bandgaps to open up with a ratio of ${\sim3}$ between their central frequencies at the air line ${ck_z/w=1}$, thus fulfilling the basic guidance condition for third harmonic generation in hollow-core fibers. In addition, these designs may serve as high-power laser delivery of two well-separated wavelengths, such as visible and near infrared.
Deep ultraviolet (DUV) laser pulses with tuneable wavelength and very short duration are a key enabling technology for next-generation technology and ultrafast science. Their generation has been the subject of extensive experimental effort, but no technique demonstrated thus far has been able to meet all requirements in one light source. Here we demonstrate a bright, efficient, and compact source of tuneable deep ultraviolet ultrafast laser pulses based on resonant dispersive wave emission in hollow capillary fibre. In a total footprint of only 120 x 75 cm, including the ytterbium-based drive …
We present a laser source delivering waveform-controlled 1.5-cycle pulses that can be focused to relativistic intensity at 1 kHz repetition rate. These pulses are generated by nonlinear compression of high-temporal-contrast sub-25\,fs pulses from a kHz Ti:Sapphire double-chirped pulse amplifier in a stretched flexible hollow fiber compressor scaled for high peak power. The unique capabilities of this source are demonstrated by observing carrier-envelope phase effects in laser-wakefield acceleration of relativistic electrons for the first time.
We demonstrate the highest flux tabletop source of coherent soft X-rays to date, driven by a single-stage 10 mJ Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier at 1 kHz. We first down-convert the laser to 1.3 um using a parametric amplifier, before up-converting it to soft X-rays using high harmonic generation in a high-pressure, phase matched, hollow waveguide geometry. The resulting optimally phase matched broadband spectrum extends to 200 eV, with a soft X-ray photon flux of > 10^6 photons/pulse/1% bandwidth at 1 kHz, corresponding to > 10^9 photons/s/1% bandwidth, or approximately a three order-of-magn…
Many reports on stimulated Raman scattering in mixtures of Raman-active and noble gases indicate that the addition of a dispersive buffer gas increases the phase-mismatch to higher-order Stokes and antiStokes sidebands, resulting in preferential conversion to the first few Stokes lines, accompanied by a significant reduction in Raman gain due to collisions with buffer gas molecules. Here we report that, provided the dispersion can be precisely controlled, the effective Raman gain in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) can actually be significantly enhanced when a buffer gas is …
We report here an experimental setup to perform three-pulse pump-probe measurements over a wide wavelength and temperature range. By combining two pump pulses in the visible (650-900 nm) and mid-IR (5-20 $μ$m) range, with a broadband supercontinuum white-light probe, our apparatus enables both the combined selective excitation of different material degrees of freedom and a full time-dependent reconstruction of the non-equilibrium dielectric function of the sample. We describe here the optical setup, the cryogenic sample environment and the custom-made acquisition electronics capable of referen…
We demonstrate that the phase-matched dispersive wave (DW) emission within the resonance band of a 25-cm-long gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) can be strongly enhanced by the photoionization effect of the pump pulse. In the experiments we observe that as the pulse energy increases, the pump pulse gradually shifts to shorter wavelengths due to soliton-plasma interactions. When the central wavelength of the blueshifting soliton is close to the resonance band of the HC-PCF, high-efficiency energy transfer from the pump light to the DW in the visible region can be obtained. D…
While optical fibers display excellent performances in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet ranges remain poorly addressed by them. Obtaining better fibers for the short-wavelength range has been restricted, in all fiber optics, by scattering processes. In hollow-core fibers, the scattering loss arises from the core roughness and represents the limiting factor in reducing their loss regardless of the fiber cladding confinement power. To attain fibers performing at short wavelengths, it is paramount developing means to minimize the height variations on the fiber microstructure boundaries. Here…
Optical fibers are widely used in bioimaging systems as flexible endoscopes capable of low-invasive penetration inside hollow tissue cavities. Here, we report on the technique which allows magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of hollow-core microstructured fibers (HC-MFs), paving the way for combing MRI and optical bioimaging. Our approach is based on Layer-by-Layer assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and magnetite nanoparticles on the inner core surface of HC-MFs. Incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles into polyelectrolyte layers renders HC-MFs visible for MRI and induces the red-sh…
The advent of photonic bandgap (PBG) guiding hollow- core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) sparked the hope of guiding light with attenuation below the fundamental silica Rayleigh scattering limit (SRSL) of conventional step-index fibers. Unfortunately, the combination of the strong core-cladding optical-overlap, the surface roughness at the silica cladding struts and the presence of interface-modes limited the lowest reported transmission-loss to 1.2 dB/km at 1550 nm. This hope is recently revived by the introduction of hypocycloid core- contour (i.e. negative curvature) in inhibited-coupling …
We report the first demonstration to our knowledge of a continuously tunable picosecond laser operating around 1 MHz. The emission can be tuned from 640 to 685 nm and the repetition rate from 200 kHz to 1 MHz with a pulse duration of less than 200 ps. The system is based on a Nd:YVO4 passively Q-switched microchip laser providing a few tens of nJ per pulse. Two cascaded stages of amplification are then used to increase the pulse energy to several microJ . The frequency doubled radiation is then used to pump a periodically-poled-niobate-lithium (PPLN)-based optical parametric generator in an al…
The performances of optical fibre-based quantum information systems are limited by the intrinsic properties of silica glass materials, e.g. high latency, Rayleigh-scattering loss wavelength scaling law, and cross-coupling induced modal impurity. Hollow-core optical fibre (HCF) promises to unify air-borne light propagation and non-line-of-sight transmission, thus holding great potentials for versatile photonics-based quantum infor-mation applications. The early version of HCF based on photonic-bandgap guidance has not proven itself as a reliable quantum channel because of the poor modal purity …
Generating visible light with wide tunability and high coherence based on photonic integrated circuits is of high interest for applications in biophotonics, precision metrology and quantum technology. Here we present the first demonstration of a hybrid-integrated diode laser in the visible spectral range. Using an AlGaInP optical amplifier coupled to a low-loss Si3N4 feedback circuit based on microring resonators, we obtain a spectral coverage of 10.8 nm around 684.4 nm wavelength with up to 4.8 mW output power. The measured intrinsic linewidth is 2.3$\pm$0.2 kHz.
High coherence visible and near-visible laser sources are centrally important to the operation of advanced position/navigation/timing systems as well as classical/quantum sensing systems. However, the complexity and size of these bench-top lasers is an impediment to their transitioning beyond the laboratory. Here, a system-on-a-chip that emits high-coherence visible and near-visible lightwaves is demonstrated. The devices rely upon a new approach wherein wavelength conversion and coherence increase by self-injection-locking are combined within in a single nonlinear resonator. This simplified a…

We perform a beat-frequency-resolved analysis for two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy using a high-speed and stable 2D electronic spectrometer and few-cycle visible laser pulses to disentangle the vibrational coherences in an artificial fluorescent protein. We develop a highly stable ultrashort light source that generates 5.3-fs visible pulses with a pulse energy of 4.7 uJ at a repetition rate of 10 kHz using multi-plate pulse compression and laser filamentation in a gas cell. The above-5.3-fs laser pulses together with a high-speed multichannel detector enable us to measure a series of 2D…
Although ultraviolet (UV) light is important in many areas of science and technology, there are very few if any lasers capable of delivering wavelength-tunable ultrashort UV pulses at MHz repetition rates. Here we report the generation of deep-UV laser pulses at MHz repetition rates and μJ-energies by means of dispersive wave (DW) emission from self-compressed solitons in gas-filled single-ring hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (SR-PCF). Pulses from an ytterbium fiber laser (~300 fs) are first compressed to ~25 fs in a SR-PCF-based nonlinear compression stage, and subsequently used to pump a …
Raman-scattering noise in silica has been the key obstacle toward the realisation of high quality fiber-based photon-pair sources. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how to get past this limitation by dispersion tailoring a xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The source operates at room temperature, and is designed to generate Raman-free photon-pairs at useful wavelength ranges, with idler at the telecom, and signal at a visible range. We achieve a coincidence-to-accidentals ratio (2) as high as 2740 combined with an ultra low heralded g H (0) = 0.002, indicating a very high sign…
Ultrafast broadband ultraviolet radiation is of importance in spectroscopy and photochemistry, since high photon energies enable single-photon excitations and ultrashort pulses allow time-resolved studies. Here we report the use of gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) for efficient ultrafast nonlinear optics in the ultraviolet. Soliton self-compression of 400 nm pulses of (unprecedentedly low) ~500 nJ energies down to sub-6-fs durations is achieved, as well as resonant emission of tunable dispersive waves from these solitons. In addition, we discuss the generation of a flat…
We report a novel scheme for the generation of dense clusters of Raman sidebands. The scheme uses a broadband-guiding hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) filled with a mixture of H2, D2, and Xe for efficient interaction between the gas mixture and a green laser pump pulse (532 nm, 1 ns) of only 5 uJ energy. This results in the generation from noise of more than 135 ro-vibrational Raman sidebands covering the visible spectral region with an average spacing of only 2 THz. Such a spectrally dense and compact fiber-based source is ideal for applications where closely spaced narrow-band las…
Infrared femtosecond laser pulses are important tools both in strong-field physics, driving X-ray high-harmonic generation, and as the basis for widely tuneable, if inefficient, ultrafast sources in the visible and ultraviolet. Although anomalous material dispersion simplifies compression to few-cycle pulses, attosecond pulses in the infrared have remained out of reach. We demonstrate soliton self-compression of 1800 nm laser pulses in hollow capillary fibers to sub-cycle envelope duration (2 fs) with 27 GW peak power, corresponding to attosecond field transients. In the same system, we genera…
We present a novel high-power, frequency-stabilized UV laser source at 326.2~nm, resonant with the Cd $^{1}$S$_{0}$ - $^{3}$P$_{1}$ narrow intercombination transition. We have achieved a maximum produced power of 1~W at 326.2~nm by two successive frequency doubling stages of a narrow-linewidth (< 1~kHz) seed laser at 1304.8~nm. About 3.4 W of optical power at 652.4 nm is produced by a visible Raman fiber amplifier (VRFA) that amplifies and generates the second harmonic of the infrared radiation. The visible light is subsequently frequency-doubled down to 326.2~nm in a non-linear bow-tie cavity…
Although supercontinuum sources are readily available for the visible and near infrared, and recently also for the mid-IR, many areas of biology, chemistry and physics would benefit greatly from the availability of compact, stable and spectrally bright deep ultraviolet (DUV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) supercontinuum sources. Such sources have however not yet been developed. Here we report the generation of a bright supercontinuum, spanning more than three octaves from 124 nm to beyond 1200 nm, in hydrogen-filled kagomé-style hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (kagomé-PCF). Few-μJ, 30 fs pump…
