The finite-difference time-domain method was employed to simulate light propagation in tapered near-field fiber probes with small metal aperture. By conducting large-volume simulations, including tapered metal-cladding waveguide and connected optical fiber waveguide, we illustrated the coupling between these guiding modes as well as the electric field distribution in the vicinity of the aperture. The high collection efficiency of a double-tapered probe was reproduced and was ascribed to the shortening of the cutoff region and the efficient coupling to the guiding mode of the optical fiber. The dependence of the efficiency on the tapered structure parameters was also examined.
A complete integrated table-top facility for the study of high-$Q$ Whispering Gallery Modes in solid and liquid micro-cavities is described, with emphasis on the in situ fabrication of reliable tapered fibers of sub-micron waist sizes for coupling light into time-dependent liquid micro-cavities. The experimental parameters have been chosen to get nearly adiabatic tapers, with their waist size consistent with the theoretical model. The oscillations in the transmitted power during fiber tapering are monitored to check the coupling of higher order modes and identify the point when the fiber is su…
We report the spatial beam self-cleaning in bi-tapered conventional multimode fibers (MMFs) with different tapered lengths. Through the introduction of the bi-tapered structure in MMFs, the input beam with poor beam quality from a high-power fiber laser can be converted to a centered, bell-shaped beam in a short length, due to the strengthened nonlinear modes coupling. It is found that the bi-tapered MMF with longer tapered length at the same waist diameter shows better beam self-cleaning effect and larger spectral broadening. The obtained results offer a new method to improve the beam quality…
Tapered optical fibers with a nanofiber waist are widely used tools for efficient coupling of light to photonic devices or quantum emitters via the nanofiber's evanescent field. In order to ensure well-controlled coupling, the phase and polarization of the nanofiber guided light field have to be stable. Here, we show that in typical tapered optical fibers these quantities exhibit high-frequency thermal fluctuations. They originate from high-Q torsional oscillations that opto-mechanically couple to the nanofiber-guided light. We present a simple ab-initio theoretical model that quantitatively e…
We develop a high-power narrow-linewidth fiber amplifier based on a tapered Yb-doped fiber. In the experiment, the narrow end of the tapered fiber is used as the input port of both pump source and signal light to form a robust all-fiber configuration. The stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is effectively suppressed owing to its gradually increased mode area as well as continuously changed Brillouin frequency shift dependent on the core diameter. As a result, an output power of 260 W without SBS and mode instability (MI) is obtained, with a slope efficiency of 71.3 % and a narrow linewidth o…
We developed an apparatus to couple a 50-micrometer diameter whispering-gallery silica microtoroidal resonator in a helium-4 cryostat using a straight optical tapered-fiber at 1550nm wavelength. On a top-loading probe specifically adapted for increased mechanical stability, we use a specifically-developed "cryotaper" to optically probe the cavity, allowing thus to record the calibrated mechanical spectrum of the optomechanical system at low temperatures. We then demonstrate excellent thermalization of a 63-MHz mechanical mode of a toroidal resonator down to the cryostat's base temperature of 1…
We demonstrate adiabatically tapered fibers terminating in sub-micron tips that are clad with a higher-index material for coupling to an on-chip waveguide. This cladding enables coupling to a high-index waveguide without losing light to the buried oxide. A technique to clad the tip of the tapered fiber with a higher-index polymer is introduced. Conventional tapered waveguides and forked tapered waveguide structures are investigated for coupling from the clad fiber to the on-chip waveguide. We find the forked waveguide facilitates alignment and packaging, while the conventional taper leads to h…
We present the use of linearly down-tapered gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber in a single-stage, pumped with pulses from a compact infrared laser source, to generate a supercontinuum carrying significant spectral power in the deep ultraviolet (200 - 300 nm). The generated supercontinuum extends from the near infrared down to around 213 nm with up to 0.83 mW/nm in the deep ultraviolet.
We report design of a tapered fiber that can be used for compression of pulses at different central wavelengths. The proposed fiber is a 3-layer W-type large-mode-area fiber, which has been tapered to transform the mode area from 1700 μm2 to 900 μm2. We determine the exact length of the maximum pulse compression and numerically demonstrate the compression of 250 fs, 100 kW peak power input pulse to 15 fs, 850 kW at 1.55 μm wavelength and 250 fs, 120 kW peak power input pulses to 28 fs, 700 kW and to 46 fs, 500 kW at 1.8 μm and 2 μm wavelengths, respectively. Such a fiber can find wide ranging …
We designed and developed tapered suspended-core fibers of high-purity As39Se61 glass for supercontinuum generation in the mid-IR with a standard fiber laser pump source at 2 $μ$m. It was shown that microstructuring allows shifting a zero dispersion wavelength to the range shorter than 2 $μ$m in the fiber waist with a core diameter of about 1 $μ$m. In this case, supercontinuum generation in the 1-10 $μ$m range was obtained numerically with 150-fs 100-pJ pump pulses at 2 $μ$m. We also performed experiments on wavelength conversion of ultrashort optical pulses at 1.57 $μ$m from Er: fiber laser s…
We report supercontinuum generation by launching femtosecond Yb fiber laser pulses into a tapered single-mode fiber of 3 um core diameter. A spectrum of more than one octave, from 550 to 1400 nm, has been obtained with an output power of 1.3 W at a repetition rate of 250 MHz, corresponding to a coupling efficiency of up to 60%. By using a typical f-2f interferometer, the carrier envelope offset frequency was measured and found to have a signal-to-noise ratio of nearly 30 dB.
We investigated the cause of optical transmittance degradation in tapered fibers. Degradation commences immediately after fabrication and it eventually reduces the transmittance to almost zero. It is a major problem that limits applications of tapered fibers. We systematically investigated the effect of the dust-particle density and the humidity on the degradation dynamics. The results clearly show that the degradation is mostly due to dust particles and that it is not related to the humidity. In a dust free environment it is possible to preserve the transmittance with a degradation of less th…
We experimentally determine tensile force-elongation diagrams of tapered optical fibers with a nanofiber waist. The tapered optical fibers are produced from standard silica optical fibers using a heat and pull process. Both, the force-elongation data and scanning electron microscope images of the rupture points indicate a brittle material. Despite the small waist radii of only a few hundred nanometers, our experimental data can be fully explained by a nonlinear stress-strain model that relies on material properties of macroscopic silica optical fibers. This is an important asset when it comes …
We cooled ultrathin tapered fibers to cryogenic temperatures and controllably coupled them with high-Q microsphere resonators at a wavelength close to the optical transition of diamond nitrogen vacancy centers. The 310-nm-diameter tapered fibers were stably nanopositioned close to the microspheres with a positioning stability of approximately 10 nm over a temperature range of 7-28 K. A cavity-induced phase shift was observed in this temperature range, demonstrating a discrete transition from undercoupling to overcoupling.
Optical phase shifters and switches play an important role for various optical applications including optical signal processing, sensing and communication. In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber all optical phase shifter using few-layer 2D material tungsten disulfide (WS2) deposited on a tapered fiber. WS2 absorbs injected 980 nm pump (control light) and generates heat which changes the refractive index of the tapered fiber due to thermo-optic effect and achieves a maximum phase shift of 6.1π near 1550 nm. The device has a loss of 3.7 dB. By constructing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with WS2 b…
We demonstrate nanowatt-level saturated absorption using a sub-wavelength diameter tapered optical fiber (TOF) suspended in a gas of metastable xenon atoms. This ultralow-power nonlinearity is enabled by a small optical mode area propagating over a relatively long distance through the Xe gas. The use of inert noble gasses in these kinds of TOF experiments may offer practical advantages over the use of reactive alkali vapors such as rubidium.
A wavelength spacing tunable, multiwavelength Q-switched mode-locked (QML) fiber laser in an erbium-doped fiber cavity based on graphene oxide deposited on tapered fiber is proposed by choosing the diameter and length of the taper, graphene oxide thickness and cavity dispersion, in which the wavelength spacing could be tuned by pump power. The evolutions of temporal and spectral with different pump strengths are investigated. Results show that the tunability of the multiwavelength laser can be interpreted by the bound states of QML laser resulting from a mutual interaction of dispersion, nonli…
This paper presents a theoretical design of chalcogenide glass based tapered microstructured optical fiber (MOF) to generate high power parabolic pulses (PPs) at the mid-IR wavelength (~ 2 μm). We optimize fiber cross-section by the multipole method and studied pulse evolution by well known Symmetrized Split-Step Fourier Method. Our numerical investigation reveals the possibility of highly efficient PP generation within a very short length (~ 18 cm) of this MOF for a Gaussian input pulse of 60 W peak power and FWHM of 3.5 ps. We examined quality of the generated PP by calculating the misfit pa…
We demonstrated a simple and reliable technique of coupling diamond nanocrystal containing NV center to tapered optical fiber. We carefully studied fluorescence of the fiber itself and were able to suppress it to the level lower than single photon emission from the NV center. Single photon statistics was demonstrated at the fiber end as well as up to 3 times improvement in collection efficiency with respect to our confocal microscope
We demonstrate mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation (SCG) with instantaneous bandwidth from 2.2 to 5 μm at 40 dB below the peak, covering the wavelength range desirable for molecular spectroscopy and numerous other applications. The SCG occurs in a tapered As2S3 fiber prepared by in-situ tapering and is pumped by femtosecond pulses from the subharmonic of a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. Interference with a narrow linewidth c.w. laser verifies that the coherence properties of the near-IR frequency comb have been preserved through these cascaded nonlinear processes. With this appr…
We show that solitons undergo a strong blue shift in fibers with a dispersion landscape that varies along the direction of propagation. The experiments are based on a small-core photonic crystal fiber, tapered to have a core diameter that varies continuously along its length, resulting in a zero-dispersion wavelength that moves from 731 nm to 640 nm over the transition. The central wavelength of a soliton translates over 400 nm towards shorter wavelength. This accompanied by strong emission of radiation into the UV and IR spectral region. The experimental results are confirmed by numerical sim…
Whispering-gallery mode crystalline resonators currently maintain the best quality factor (Q) record, however, compact on-chip packaging is still a challenge although various coupling architectures have been developed. Here, a chemical etching method is proposed to fabricate a miniaturized tapered fiber waveguide on silicon substrate. The Marangoni effect is implemented to reduce the surface roughness of the cone region. The optical loss of 0.1 dB/mm is obtained, and the Q of on-chip crystalline resonator exceeds 108. Additionally, TEC is implanted in the package to actively customize the temp…
We present a novel fiber-optic component, a "tapered multi-core fiber (MCF)", designed for integration into ultra-miniaturized endoscopes for minimally invasive two-photon point-scanning imaging and to address the power delivery issue that has faced MCF based lensless endoscopes. With it we achieve experimentally a factor 6.0 increase in two-photon signal yield while keeping the ability to point-scan by the memory effect, and a factor 8.9 sacrificing the memory effect. To reach this optimal design we first develop and validate a fast numerical model capable of predicting the essential properti…
We describe a system for generating frequency-chirped and amplitude-shaped pulses on time scales from sub-nanosecond to ten nanoseconds. The system starts with cw diode-laser light at 780 nm and utilizes fiber-based electro-optical phase and intensity modulators, driven by an arbitrary waveform generator, to generate the shaped pulses. These pulses are subsequently amplified to several hundred mW with a tapered amplifier in a delayed double-pass configuration. Frequency chirps up to 5 GHz in 2 ns and pulse widths as short as 0.15 ns have been realized.
In this work we present a platform for testing the device performance of a cavity-emitter system, using an ensemble of emitters and a tapered optical fiber. This method provides high-contrast spectra of the cavity modes, selective detection of emitters coupled to the cavity, and an estimate of the device performance in the single- emitter case. Using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond and a GaP optical microcavity, we are able to tune the cavity onto the NV resonance at 10 K, couple the cavity-coupled emission to a tapered fiber, and measure the fiber-coupled NV spontaneous emission deca…
One of the most fascinating aspects of quantum fields in curved spacetime is the Unruh effect. The direct experimental detection of Unruh temperature has remained an elusive challenge up to now. Gradient optical waveguides manipulating the dispersion of photons are assumed to realize the great acceleration of effective particles, leading to a high effective Unruh temperature. However, experimentally achieving this optical waveguide has not yet been reported. In this work, we exploit a tapered fiber to simulate the accelerated motion of effective particles and obtain an effective Unruh temperat…
In this work, we demonstrate the use of tapered optical fibers (TOF) to detect charged particle (ions), irradiated at various energies, fluences and species. The single mode tapered optical fiber has been used in various sensing applications in recent times. Here, tapered optical fibers have been exposed to two different ion species namely Ar+ and N+ at different energies and different fluences, respectively. The optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) detects the changes in the free spectral range (FSR), period, and transmission power loss from the ion beam irradiated TOFs. The change in the refracti…
We experimentally demonstrate spatial beam self-cleaning in an Yb-doped graded-index multimode fiber taper, both in passive and active configurations. The input laser beam at 1064 nm was injected for propagation from the small to the large core side of the taper, with laser diode pumping in a counterdirectional configuration. The Kerr effect permits to obtain high-beam quality amplification with no accompanying frequency conversions. As a result, our nonlinear taper amplifier may provide an important building block for multimode fiber lasers and amplifiers.
We have developed a system for tapered fiber measurements of optomechanical resonators inside a dilution refrigerator, which is compatible with both on- and off-chip devices. Our apparatus features full three-dimensional control of the taper-resonator coupling conditions enabling critical coupling, with an overall fiber transmission efficiency of up to 70%. Notably, our design incorporates an optical microscope system consisting of a coherent bundle of 37,000 optical fibers for real-time imaging of the experiment at a resolution of $\sim$1 $μ$m. We present cryogenic optical and optomechanical …

Optical spectroscopy is a fundamental tool in numerous areas of science and technology. Much effort has focused on miniaturizing spectrometers, but thus far at the cost of high spectral resolution and broad operating range. Here, we describe a compact spectrometer without this trade-off. The device relies on imaging multi-mode interference from leaky modes along a highly multimode tapered optical fiber, resulting in spectrally distinguishable images that form a basis for reconstructing an incident light spectrum. This tapered fiber multimode interference spectrometer enables the acquisition of…
We analyze the modulation instability induced by periodic variations of group velocity dispersion and nonlinearity in optical fibers, which may be interpreted as an analogue of the well-known parametric resonance in mechanics. We derive accurate analytical estimates of resonant detuning, maximum gain and instability margins, significantly improving on previous literature on the subject. We also design a periodically tapered photonic crystal fiber, in order to achieve narrow instability sidebands at a detuning of 35 THz, above the Raman maximum gain peak of fused silica. The wide tunability of …
We design and fabricate ultra-low-loss tapered optical fibers (TOFs) with minimal lengths. We first optimize variations of the torch scan length using the flame-brush method for fabricating TOFs with taper angles that satisfy the adiabaticity criteria. We accordingly fabricate TOFs with optimal shapes and compare their transmission to TOFs with a constant taper angle and TOFs with an exponential shape. The highest transmission measured for TOFs with an optimal shape is in excess of 99.7 % with a total TOF length of only 23 mm, whereas TOFs with a constant taper angle of 2 mrad reach 99.6 % tra…
As photon mixing is not inherently limited to any specific spectral region, parametric processes represent a compelling solution for all-optical signal processing in spectral windows not easily accessible by other technologies. Particularly, the continuous-wave pumping scheme is essential for any application requiring modulated signals or precise spectroscopic characterization. Highly nonlinear fibers enabled record performances for wavelength conversion and amplification in the telecommunication band, however no waveguiding platforms have yet solved the trade-off between high-nonlinearity, lo…
Realization of integrated photonic circuits on a single chip requires controlled manipulation and integration of solid-state quantum emitters with nanophotonic components. Previous works focused on emitters embedded in a three-dimensional crystals -- such as nanodiamonds or quantum dots. In contrast, in this work we demonstrate coupling of a single emitter in a two-dimensional (2D) material, namely hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), with a tapered optical fiber and find a collection efficiency of the system is found to be 10~\%. Furthermore, due to the single dipole character of the emitter, we we…
We study the modulational instability induced by periodic variations of group-velocity dispersion and nonlinear coefficients in a highly birefringent fiber. We observe, for each resonance order, the presence of two pairs of genuine vector type sidebands, which are spectrally unbalanced between the polarization components for nonzero group-index mismatch, and one pair of balanced sidebands emerging and dominating at increasing group-index mismatch. As the conventional modulational instability manifests itself, it is partially suppressed by the proximity of these new unstable regions.
The use of sub-wavelength diameter tapered optical fibers (TOF's) in warm rubidium vapor has recently been identified as a promising system for realizing ultra-low-power nonlinear optical effects. However, at the relatively high atomic densities needed for many of these experiments, rubidium atoms accumulating on the TOF surface can cause a significant loss of overall transmission through the fiber. Here we report direct measurements of the time-scale associated with this transmission degradation for various rubidium density conditions. Transmission is affected almost immediately after the int…
We experimentally investigate ultralow-power saturation of the rubidium D2 transitions using a tapered optical fiber (TOF) suspended in a warm Rb vapor. A direct comparison of power-dependent absorption measurements for the TOF system with those obtained in a standard free-space vapor cell system highlights the differences in saturation behavior for the two systems. The effects of hyperfine pumping in the TOF system are found to be minimized due to the short atomic transit times through the highly confined evanescent optical mode guided by the TOF. The TOF system data is well-fit by a relative…
We propose a feedback-assisted direct laser writing method to perform laser ablation of fiber optics devices in which their light-collection signal is used to optimize their properties. A femtosecond-pulsed laser beam is used to ablate a metal coating deposited around a tapered optical fiber, employed to show the suitability of the approach to pattern devices with small radius of curvature. During processing, the same pulses generate two-photon fluorescence in the surrounding environment and the signal is monitored to identify different patterning regimes over time through spectral analysis. T…
A lithium niobate on insulator ridge waveguide allows constructing high-density photonic integrated circuits thanks to its small bending radius offered by the high index contrast. Meanwhile, the significant mode-field mismatch between an optical fiber and the single-mode lithium niobate waveguide leads to low coupling efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate, both numerically and experimentally, that the problem can be solved with a tapered single mode fiber of an optimized mode field profile. Numerical simulation shows that the minimum coupling losses for the TE and TM mode are 0.32 dB and 0.86 dB,…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the energy transfer between modes during the tapering process of an optical nanofiber through spectrogram analysis. The results allow optimization of the tapering process, and we measure transmission in excess of 99.95% for the fundamental mode. We quantify the adiabaticity condition through calculations and place an upper bound on the amount of energy transferred to other modes at each step of the tapering, giving practical limits to the tapering angle.
We study the generation of correlated photon pairs and heralded single photons via strongly non-degenerate spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a series of identical micro-/nano fibers (MNF). Joint spectral intensity of the biphoton field generated at the wavelength of about 880 nm and 1310 nm has been measured under excitation by 100 ps laser pulses demonstrating good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The measured zero-time second-order autocorrelation function was about 0.2 when the emission rate of the heralded photons was of 4 Hz. The MNF-based source perfectly matches standard …

On-chip cavity optomechanics, in which strong co-localization of light and mechanical motion is engineered, relies on efficient coupling of light both into and out of the on-chip optical resonator. Here we detail our particular style of tapered and dimpled optical fibers, pioneered by the Painter group at Caltech, which are a versatile and reliable solution to efficient on-chip coupling. First, a brief overview of tapered, single mode fibers is presented, in which the single mode cutoff diameter is highlighted. The apparatus used to create a dimpled tapered fiber is then described, followed by…
Tapered silica fibers are often used to rapidly probe the optical properties of micro-resonators. However, their low refractive index precludes phase-matching when coupling to high-index micro-resonators, reducing efficiency. Here we demonstrate efficient optical coupling from tapered fibers to high-index micro-resonators by loading the fibers with an ancillary adiabatic waveguide-coupler fabricated via angled-etching. We demonstrate greatly enhanced coupling to a silicon multimode micro-resonator when compared to coupling via the bare fiber only. Signatures of resonator optical bistability ar…
Highly efficient coupling of photons from nanoemitters into single-mode optical fibers is demonstrated using tapered fibers. 7.4 +/- 1.2 % of the total emitted photons from single CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals were coupled into a 300-nm-diameter tapered fiber. The dependence of the coupling efficiency on the taper diameter was investigated and the coupling efficiency was found to increase exponentially with decreasing diameter. This method is very promising for nanoparticle sensing and single-photon sources.
Optical detection of structures with dimensions smaller than an optical wavelength requires devices that work on scales beyond the diffraction limit. Here we present the possibility of using a tapered optical nanofiber as a detector to resolve individual atoms trapped in an optical lattice in the Mott Insulator phase. We show that the small size of the fiber combined with an enhanced photon collection rate can allow for the attainment of large and reliable measurement signals.
A waveguide structure consisting of a tapered nanofiber on a metal film is proposed and analyzed to support highly localized hybrid plasmonic modes. The hybrid plasmonic mode can be efficiently excited through the in-line tapered fiber based on adiabatic conversion and collected by the same fiber, which is very convenient in the experiment. Due to the ultrasmall mode area of plasmonic mode, the local electromagnetic field is greatly enhanced in this movable waveguide, which is potential for enhanced coherence light emitter interactions, such as waveguide quantum electrodynamics, single emitter…
