Evolution of the Muon-ID package originally written by R. Markeloff at NIU. The original method used a helical swimmer to extrapolate the tracks from the Interaction Point and to collect hits in all sub-detectors: the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters and the muon detector. The package was modified to replace the swimmer by a stepper which does account both for the effects of the magnetic field and for the losses by ionization in the material encountered by the particle. The Modified package shows a substantial improvement in the efficiency of muon identification. It was applied on bbar-b jets and the muon detection efficiency and purity was studied. Further improvement should be reached by accounting for stochastic processes via the utilization of the Kalman filter.
A high spatial resolution tracking system was setup with the Micro-mesh gaseous structure (Micromegas) detectors in order to study the muon tomographic imaging technique for nuclear threat detection. 6 layers of 90 mm $\times$ 90 mm one-dimensional readout Micromegas were used to construct a tracking system and the imaging test using some metallic bars was performed with cosmic ray muons. A two-dimensional imaging of the test object was presented with a newly proposed ratio algorithm.
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment designed to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy using a central detector (CD), which contains 20 kton liquid scintillator (LS) surrounded by about 18,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), located 700~m underground. The rate of cosmic muons reaching the JUNO detector is about 3~Hz and the muon induced neutrons and isotopes are major backgrounds for the neutrino detection. Reconstruction of the muon trajectory in the detector is crucial for the study and rejection of those backgrounds. This paper will introdu…

The chamber design and construction procedures have been optimized for mass production and provide sense wire positioning accuracy of better than 10 ?m. The rate capability of the sMDT chambers has been extensively tested at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility. It exceeds the one of the ATLAS muon drift tube (MDT) chambers, which are operated at unpr…
The $g-2$ experiment successfully completed its second data taking period (Run-2) between March and July 2019, with the analysis of Run-1 and Run-2 data currently proceeding. The final goal of the experiment is to determine the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_μ=\frac{g-2}{2}$, to a precision of 140 ppb. Essential to reducing the systematic uncertainty on $a_μ$ through measurements of the muon beam profile are the in-vacuum straw tracking detectors. A crucial prerequisite to obtaining accurate distributions of the beam profile is the internal alignment of the trackers, which is described here, along …
In this work, we present a new approach for fast tracking on multiwire proportional chambers with neural networks. Some key directions for future R&D on Micro-pattern Gas Detectors in the U.S. are suggested.
A tracking detector system has been constructed with an innovative approach to the classical multi-wire proportional chamber concept, using contemporary technologies. The detectors, covering an area of 0.58 square meters each, are optimized for the application of muon radiography. The main features are high (>99.5%) and uniform detection efficiency, 9 mm FWHM position resolution, filling gas consumption below 2 liters per hour for the non toxic, non flammable argon and carbon dioxide mixture. These parameters, along with the simplicity of the construction and the tolerance for mechanical effec…
The installation of the muon telescope detector opened new possibilities for studying dimuon production at STAR. However, backgrounds from hadron punch-through and weak decays of pions and kaons make the identification of primary muons challenging. In this paper we present a study of shallow and deep neural networks trained as classifiers for the purpose of muon identification using information from the muon telescope detector at STAR. The performance of shallow neural networks is presented as a function of the number of neurons in their hidden layer. A hyperparameter optimization for determin…

Initial test measurements with a prototype Resistive Plate Chamber were performed using a low-cost FPGA coupled to the NINO ASIC for the event selection and handling data. The Time over-Threshold (TOT) property of NINO ASICs has been used to achieve better position information and achieve precise tracking capability. In our test setup, we try to build an imaging setup using a single RPC and lead block, which covers some areas …
Muon identification is of paramount importance for the physics programme of LHCb. In the upgrade phase, starting from Run 3 of the LHC, the trigger of the experiment will be solely based on software. The luminosity increase to $2\times10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ will require an improvement of the muon identification criteria, aiming at performances equal or better than those of Run 2, but in a much more challenging environment. In this paper, two new muon identification algorithms developed in view of the LHCb upgrade are presented, and their performance in terms of signal efficiency versus bac…
Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) is a newly installed detector in the STAR experiment. It provides an excellent opportunity to study heavy quarkonium physics using the dimuon channel in heavy ion collisions. The result using the Likelihood Ratio method shows that the muon identification efficiency can reach to $\sim$90% for muons with transverse momentum greater than 3 GeV/c and the significance of J/$ψ$ signal is improved by $\sim$40% compared to us…

The CMS experiment uses self-triggering arrays of drift tubes in the barrel muon trigger to perform the identification of the correct bunch crossing. The identification is unique only if the trigger chain is correctly synchronized. In this paper, the synchronization performed during an extended cosmic ray run is described and the results are reported. The random arrival time of cosmic ray muons allowed several synchronization aspects to be studied and a simple method for the fine synchronization of the Drift Tube Local Trigger at LHC to be developed.
The contribution of Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) to muon reconstruction in CMS has been studied on a sample of muons collected in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2011. Muon reconstruction is performed using the all-silicon inner tracker and with up to four stations of gas-ionization muon detectors. Drift Tubes and Cathode Strip Chambers detect muons in the barrel and endcap regions, respectively, and are complemented by the RPC system. Measured distributions of reconstructed hits in the RPCs crossed by muons from Z decays with a transverse momentum pT above 20 GeV/c …
The performance of the muon identification in LHCb is extracted from data using muons and hadrons produced in J/ψ->μμ, Λ->pπand D^{\star}->πD0(Kπ) decays. The muon identification procedure is based on the pattern of hits in the muon chambers. A momentum dependent binary requirement is used to reduce the probability of hadrons to be misidentified as muons to the level of 1%, keeping the muon efficiency in the range of 95-98%. As further refinement, a likelihood is built for the muon and non-muon hypotheses. Adding a requirement on this likelihood that provides a total muon efficiency at the lev…
The goals of the ongoing and planned ATLAS muon detector upgrades are to increase the acceptance for precision muon momentum measurement and triggering and to improve the rate capability of the muon chambers in the high-background regions corresponding to the increasing LHC luminosity. Smalldiameter Muon Drift Tube (sMDT) chambers have been developed for these purposes. With half the drift-tube diameter of the current ATLAS Muon Drift Tube (MDT) chambers with 30 mm drift tube diameter and otherwise unchanged operating parameters, the sMDT chambers share all the advantages of the MDTs, but have…
Radiography with cosmic ray muon scattering has proven to be a successful method of imaging nuclear material through heavy shielding. Of particular interest is monitoring dry storage casks for diversion of plutonium contained in spent reactor fuel. Using muon tracking detectors that surround a cylindrical cask, cosmic ray muon scattering can be simultaneously measured from all azimuthal angles, giving complete tomographic coverage of the cask interior. This paper describes the first application of filtered back projection algorithms, typically used in medical imaging, to cosmic ray muon imagin…
The Jiangmen Neutrino Underground Observatory (JUNO) is a 20$\,$kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction near Kaiping in China. The physics program focuses on the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy with reactor anti-neutrinos. For this purpose, JUNO is located 650$\,$m underground with a distance of 53$\,$km to two nuclear power plants. As a result, it is exposed to a muon flux that requires a precise muon reconstruction to make a veto of cosmogenic backgrounds viable. Established muon tracking algorithms use time residuals to a track hypothesis. We developed an…
The Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab uses a gaseous straw tracking detector to make detailed measurements of the stored muon beam profile, which are essential for the experiment to achieve its uncertainty goals. Positrons from muon decays spiral inward and pass through the tracking detector before striking an electromagnetic calorimeter. The tracking detector is therefore located inside the vacuum chamber in a region where the magnetic field is large and non-uniform. As such, the tracking detector must have a low leak rate to maintain a high-quality vacuum, must be non-magnetic so as not to p…

Large size, cost-effective, high-efficiency detection systems in high background environments are required in order to accomplish the physics program. MPGDs offer a diversity of technologies that allow them to meet the required performance challenges at future facilities thank…
A new small-diameter Monitored Drift Tube (sMDT) chamber has been developed for the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS experiment to handle the higher collision rates expected at the CERN High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Current radiation portal monitors at sea ports and international borders that employ standard radiation detection techniques are not very sensitive to nuclear contraband that is well shielded to absorb emanating radiation. Muon Tomography (MT) based on the measurement of multiple scattering of atmospheric cosmic ray muons traversing cargo or vehicles that contain high-Z material is a promising passive interrogation technique for solving this problem. We report on the design and construction of compact Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors for a small prototype MT station. This station will employ 10 tra…
The ATLAS muon spectrometer is designed to measure muon momenta with a resolution of 4% @ 100 GeV/c rising to 10% @ 1 TeV/c track momentum. The spectrometer consists of precision tracking and trigger chambers embedded in a 2T magnetic field generated by three large air-core superconducting toroids. The precision detectors provide 50 micron tracking resolution to a pseudo-rapidity of 2.7. The system also includes an optical monitoring system which measures detector positions with 40 micron precision. This paper reports on the calibration and performance of the ATLAS muon spectrometer.
The muon detection system of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is based on different technologies for muon tracking and triggering. In particular, the muon system in the endcap disks of the detector consists of Resistive Plate Chambers for triggering and Cathode Strip Chambers for tracking. At present, the endcap muon system is only partially instrumented with the very forward detector region remaining uncovered. In view of a possible future extension of the muon endcap system, we report on a feasibility study on the use of Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors, in p…
The CMS detector at the LHC has recorded events from proton-proton collisions, with muon momenta reaching up to 1.8 TeV in the collected dimuon samples. These high-momentum muons allow direct access to new regimes in physics beyond the standard model. Because the physics and reconstruction of these muons are different from those of their lower-momentum counterparts, this paper presents for the first time dedicated studies of efficiencies, momentum assignment, resolution, scale, and showering of very high momentum muons produced at the LHC. These studies are performed using the 2016 and 2017 da…

The alignment system for the muon spectrometer of the CMS detector comprises three independent subsystems of optical and analog position sensors. It aligns muon chambers with respect to each other and to the central silicon tracker. System commissioning at full magnetic field began in 2008 during an extended cosmic ray run. The system succeeded in tracking muon detector movements of up to 18 mm and rotations of several milliradians under magnetic forces. Depending on coordinate and subsystem, the system achieved chamber alignment precisions of 140-350 microns and 30-200 microradians, close to …

Larger detectors with an active area of 0.5m^2 and more are under development for detector studies in high neutron or gamma ray background environments at the Gamma Irradiation Facility at CERN and the Munich tandem accelerator. Signal studies of both detector types have been performed by recordi…
We plan to build an imaging setup for material identification utilizing the Coulomb scattering of cosmic ray muons due to their interaction with the materials and tracking their trajectories with RPCs. To begin with, we consider a setup of six RPCs stacked in a parallel manner to read the position and timing information of the muons before and after their interaction with a phantom of a given material using a set of three RPCs for each phase. Here we present a simulation work carried out to study the image formation of the phantom of several materials using the present setup. A detailed modeli…
The CMS muon system operates gas-based detectors. Upgrades of the detectors and trigger components are needed to cope with increasingly challenging conditions of the HL-LHC. New irradiation tests are performed to ensure that the muon detectors will survive the harsher conditions and operate reliably. The new CERN GIF++ (Gamma Irradiation Facility) allowed to perform aging tests. We present results in terms of system performance under large backgrounds and after accelerated aging tests. New detectors will be added to improve the performance in the critical forward region: gas electron multiplie…
The passage of muons through matter is mostly affected by their Coulomb interactions with electrons and nuclei. The muon interactions with electrons lead to continuous energy loss and stopping of muons, while their scattering off nuclei lead to angular 'diffusion'. By measuring both the number of stopped muons and angular changes in muon trajectories we can estimate density and identify materials. Here we demonstrate the material identification using data taken at Los Alamos with the Mini Muon Tracker.
The use of muon scattering tomography for the non-invasive characterisation of nuclear waste is well established. We report here on the application of a combination of feature discriminators and multivariate analysis techniques to locate and identify materials in nuclear waste drums. After successful training and optimisation of the algorithms they are then tested on a range of material configurations to assess the system's performance and limitations. The system is able to correctly identify uranium, iron and lead objects on a ~few \text{cm} scale. The system's sensitivity to small uranium ob…
At upcoming medium baseline reactor neutrino experiments the spallation 9Li background will be somewhat larger than the inverse beta decay reactor neutrino signal. We use new FLUKA simulations of spallation backgrounds to optimize a class of veto strategies and find that surprisingly the optimal veto for the mass hierarchy determination has a rejection efficiency below 90%. The unrejected background has only a modest effect on the physics goals. For example $Δχ^2$ for the hierarchy determination falls by 1.4 to 3 points depending on the muon tracking ability. The optimal veto strategy is essen…
Nowadays the implementation of artificial neural networks in high-energy physics has obtained excellent results on improving signal detection. In this work we propose to use neural networks (NNs) for event discrimination in HAWC. This observatory is a water Cherenkov gamma-ray detector that in recent years has implemented algorithms to identify horizontal muon tracks. However, these algorithms are not very efficient. In this work we describe the implementation of three NNs: two based on image classification and one based on object detection. Using these algorithms we obtain an increase in the …
I present an application of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to separate muons and pions in the Belle II electromagnetic calorimeter (ECL). The ECL is designed to measure the energy deposited by charged and neutral particles. It also provides important contributions to the particle identification (PID) system. Identification of low-momenta muons and pions in the ECL is crucial if they do not reach the outer muon detector. Track-seeded cluster energy images provide the maximal possible information. The shape of the energy depositions for muons and pions in the crystals around an extrapolate…
The magnetized Iron CALorimeter detector (ICAL) which is proposed to be built in the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) laboratory, aims to study atmospheric neutrino oscillations primarily through charged current interactions of muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with the detector. The response of muons and charge identification efficiency, angle and energy resolution as a function of muon momentum and direction are studied from GEANT4-based simulations in the peripheral regions of the detector. This completes the characterisation of ICAL with respect to muons over the entire detector and …
The muons reconstruction package for the SID/ILC detector has been extended to include the Electro-Magnetic Calorimeter. The procedure previously used to reconstruct the charged tracks, an helical fit approximation, has been replaced by a step by step analytical method accounting for the magnetic field and the energy loss by ionization. The trajectory of the muons and the impact of the method on the muon identification efficiency is analyzed. One compares the behavior of muons of different energies in the (x,y)plane and the (px,py) plane of the sub-detectors.
The muon tagging is an essential tool to distinguish between gamma and hadron-induced showers in wide field-of-view gamma-ray observatories. In this work, it is shown that an efficient muon tagging (and counting) can be achieved using a water Cherenkov detector with a reduced water volume and 4 PMTs, provided that the PMT signal spatial and time patterns are interpreted by an analysis based on Machine Learning (ML). The developed analysis has been tested for different shower and array configurations. The output of the ML analysis, the probability of having a muon in the WCD station, has been u…

MICE will use particle detectors to measure the cooling effect with high precision, achieving a precision on the measurement of emittance of 0.1% or better. The particle i.d. detectors and trackers must work in harsh environmental conditions due to high magn…

As a novel approach on visual photon imaging by a single photon sensitive camera and PMTs, this work is trying to measure and identify muon tracks from the 2-D images of CsI(Tl) crystal (scintillator detectors). It is possible that muon tracks can be seen directly with a good signal-to-noise ratio neither with further amplification nor external light, which provides an evolution method for particle measurement in the photon-starved regime of scintillation detectors. The setup of the crystal and camera testing system and the identification algorithm of muon track will be discussed in detail inc…

Different perspectives of information representation are used and new features are engineered using the specific domain knowledge. As results show, these new features, in combination with the convolutional layers, are able to achieve a good performance avoiding overfitting and being able to generalise properly for the test set. The results also prove that the combination of state-of-the-art Machine Learning analysis techniques and water Cher…

A primary goal of a future $e^+e^-$ collider program will be the precision measurement of Higgs boson properties. For practical reasons it is of interest to determine the minimal set of detector specifications required to reach this and other scientific goals. Such information could be useful in developing a staged approach to the full collider project with an initial lower-cost version focused on achieving some of the primary scientific objectives. Here we investigate the precision obtainable for the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Z h \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- X$ inclusive cross section and the Higgs boson m…
The lepton identification is essential for the physics programs at high-energy frontier, especially for the precise measurement of the Higgs boson. For this purpose, a Toolkit for Multivariate Data Analysis (TMVA) based lepton identification (LICH) has been developed for detectors using high granularity calorimeters. Using the conceptual detector geometry for the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) and single charged particle samples with energy larger than 2 GeV, LICH identifies electrons/muons with efficiencies higher than 99.5% and controls the mis-identification rate of hadron to mu…
