We outline specific features of numerical simulations of metamaterial wedges and interfaces. We study the effect of different positioning of a grid in the Yee method, which is necessary to obtain consistent convergence in modeling of interfaces with metamaterials characterized by negative dielectric permittivity and negative magnetic permeability. We demonstrate however that, in the framework of the continuous-medium approximation, wave scattering on the wedge may result in a resonant excitation of surface waves with infinitely large spatial frequencies, leading to non-convergence of the simulation results that depend on the discretization step.
A wedge-shaped structure made of split-ring resonators (SRR) and wires is numerically simulated to evaluate its refraction behavior. Four frequency bands, namely, the stop band, left-handed band, ultralow-index band, and positive-index band, are distinguished according to the refracted field distributions. Negative phase velocity inside the wedge is demonstrated in the left-handed band and the Snell's law is conformed in terms of its refraction behaviors in different frequency bands. Our results confirmed that negative index of refraction indeed exists in such a composite metamaterial and also…
A robust wedge setup is proposed to unambiguously demonstrate negative refraction for negative index metamaterials. We applied our setup to several optical metamaterials from the literature and distinctly observed the phenomena of negative refraction. This further consolidates the reported negative-index property. It is found there generally exists a lateral shift for the outgoing beam through the wedge. We derived a simple expression for calculating this beam shift and interestingly, it provides us a strategy to quantitatively estimate the loss of the wedge material (Im[n]). Addition- ally, w…
We present an analytical study to the structure-modulated plasmonic angular momentum trapped on periodic metal-dielectric nano-wedges in the core region of a sectorial indefinite metamaterial. Employing a transfer-matrix calculation and a conformal-mapping technique, our theory is capable of dealing with realistic configurations of arbitrary sector numbers and rounded wedge tips. We demonstrate that in the deep-subwavelength regime strong electric field carrying high azimuthal variation can exist within only ten-nanometer length scale close to the structural center, and is naturally bounded by…
A numerical study of the features of the scattering of incident radiation at a periodically modulated hyperbolic metamaterial boundary was carried out. We have found optimal - sawtooth-shaped profile of the interface which provides minimal reflection. It is shown that at a certain orientation of the optical axes of the metamaterial, a subwave localization of the field occurs at the saw-tooth interface. An approximate analytical expression for the eigenmode was found. A generalization of the numerical method is implemented for calculating fields, based on the application of the Green's second i…
Studying basic physical effects sustained in metamaterials characterized by specific constitutive relation is a research topic with a long standing tradition. Besides intellectual curiosity, it derives its importance from the ability to predict observable phenomena that are, if found with an actual metamaterial, a clear indication on its properties. Here, we consider a nonlocal (strong spatial dispersion), lossy, and isotropic metamaterial and study the impact of the nonlocality on the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons sustained at an interface between vacuum and such metamater…
Based on the Ewald-Oseen extinction theorem, the omnidirectional total transmission of waves incident from vacuum into an anisotropic dielectric-magnetic metamaterials is investigated. It is shown that the omnidirectional total transmission need not limit at the interface associated with the conventional nonmagnetic anisotropic medium. The recent advent of a new class of anisotropic dielectric-magnetic matermaterial make the omnidirectional total transmission become available. It is found that the inherent physics underlying the omnidirectional total transmission are collective contributions o…
Local constitutive relations, i.e. a weak spatial dispersion, are usually considered in the effective description of metamaterials. However, they are often insufficient and effects due to a nonlocality, i.e. a strong spatial dispersion, are encountered. Recently (K.~Mnasri et al., arXiv:1705.10969), a generic form for a nonlocal constitutive relation has been introduced that could accurately describe the bulk properties of a metamaterial in terms of a dispersion relation. However, the description of functional devices made from such nonlocal metamaterials also requires the identification of su…
To enable new nonlinear responses, metamaterials are created by organizing structural units (meta-atoms) which are typically on the scale of about a hundred nanometers. However, truly altering atomic symmetry and enabling new nonlinear responses requires control at the atomic-scale, down to a few angstroms. Here we report the discovery of 3D nonlinear optical metamaterials realized by the precise control and twist of individual 2D van der Waals interfaces. Specifically, new nonlinear crystals are achieved by adding pseudo screw symmetries to a multiple of 4-layer WS2 stacks (e.g. 4-layer, 8-la…
Extraordinary rays in a hyperbolic metamaterial behave as particle world lines in a three dimensional (2+1) Minkowski spacetime. We analyze electromagnetic field behavior at the boundaries of this effective spacetime depending on the boundary orientation. If the boundary is perpendicular to the space-like direction in the metamaterial, an effective Rindler horizon may be observed which produces Hawking radiation. On the other hand, if the boundary is perpendicular to the time-like direction an unusual physics situation is created, which can be called "the end of time". It appears that in the l…
The use of metamaterial as a way to mitigate the negative effects of absorption in metals on the Purcell effect in metal-dielectric structures is investigated. A layered metal-dielectric structure is considered as an anisotropic medium in the long-wavelength limit. The dispersion of the surface plasmon appearing at the boundary between such a structure and a different dielectric material, as well as the position of the peak in the local density of states are studied for various combinations of materials and filling factors of the periodic structure. The calculated frequency dependence of the P…
We present a simple model of the interface between a local homogeneous medium and a potentially nonlocal metamaterial/photonic crystal. This model allows us to calculate the scattering matrix elements of the interface for a plane wave of light normally incident upon the interface from either direction. The resulting scattering matrix provides insight into the non-Maxwellian boundary conditions present at the interface between a homogeneous medium and a metamaterial/photonic crystal with strong spatial dispersion. We present the model mathematically. As an example, the model is used to calculat…
We express the boundary conditions for TE and TM waves at the interfaces of an infinite planar slab of homogeneous metamaterial as certain point interactions and use them to compute the transfer matrix of the system. This allows us to demonstrate the omnidirectional reflectionlessness of Veselago's slab for waves of arbitrary wavelength, reveal the translational and reflection symmetry of this slab, explore the laser threshold condition and coherent perfect absorption for active negative-index metamaterials, introduce a point interaction modeling phase-conjugation, determine the corresponding …
Electromagnetic metamaterials are man-made structures that have novel properties such as a negative refraction index, not attainable in naturally occurring materials. Although negative index materials (NIMs) in microwave frequencies were demonstrated in 2001, it has remained challenging to design NIMs for optical frequencies especially those with both negative permittivity and negative permeability [known as left-handed metamaterials (LHMs)]. Here, by going beyond the traditional concept of the combination of artificial electronic and magnetic meta-atoms to design NIMs, we propose a novel LHM …
Extremely anisotropic metal-dielectric multilayer metamaterials are designed to have the effective permittivity tensor of a transverse component (parallel to the interfaces of the multilayer) with zero real part and a longitudinal component (normal to the interfaces of the multilayer) with ultra-large imaginary part at the same wavelength, including the optical nonlocality analysis based on the transfer-matrix method. The diffraction-free deep-subwavelength optical beam propagation with near-zero phase variation in the designed multilayer stack due to the near-flat iso-frequency contour is dem…

We analyze the existence of localized waves in the vicinities of the interface between two dielectrics, provided one of them is uniaxial and lossy. We found two families of surface waves, one of them approaching the well-known Dyakonov surface waves (DSWs). In addition, a new family of wave fields exists which are tightly bound to the interface. Although its appearance is clearly associated with the dissipative character of the anisotropic material, the characteristic propagation length of such surface waves might surpasses the working wavelength by nearly two orders of magnitude.
In this paper we demonstrate that asymmetric hyperbolic metamaterials (AHM) can produce strongly directive thermal emission in far-field zone, which exceeds Planck's limit. Asymmetry is inherent in an uniaxial medium, whose optical axes are tilted with respect to medium interfaces and appears as a difference in properties of waves, propagating upward and downward with respect to the interface. It's known that a high density of states (DOS) for certain photons takes place in usual hyperbolic metamaterials, but emission of them into a smaller number in vacuum is preserved by the total internal r…
We study the electromagnetic surface waves localized at an interface separating a one-dimensional photonic crystal and left-handed metamaterial, the so-called surface Tamm states. We demonstrate that the metamaterial allows for a flexible control of the dispersion properties of surface states, and can support the Tamm states with a backward energy flow and a vortex-like structure.
Additional electromagnetic waves and additional boundary conditions (ABCs) in non-local materials attracted a lot of attention in the past. Here we report the possibility of additional propagating and evanescent waves in local anisotropic and bi-anisotropic linear materials. We investigate the possible options for ABCs and describe how to complement the conventional 4 Maxwells boundary conditions in the situations when there are more than 4 waves that need to be matched at the boundary of local and linear quartic metamaterials. We show that these ABCs must depend on the properties of the inter…
We study metamaterials with an anisotropic effective permittivity tensor in which one component is near zero. We find that such an anisotropic metamaterial can be used to control wave propagation and construct almost perfect bending waveguides with a high transmission rate (>95%). This interesting effect originates in the power flow redistribution by the surface waves on the input and output interfaces, which smoothly matches with the propagating modes inside the metamaterial waveguide. We also find that waves in such anisotropic epsilon-near-zero materials can be reflected by small-sized perf…
The polarization controlled optical signal routing has many important applications in photonics such as polarization beam splitter. By using two-dimensional transmission lines with lumped elements, we experimentally demonstrate the selective excitation of guided modes in waveguides composed of two kinds of single-negative metamaterials. A localized, circularly polarized emitter placed near the interface of the two kinds of single-negative metamaterials only couples with one guided mode with a specific propagating direction determined by the polarization handedness of the source. Moreover, this…
Acoustic waves propagation of in composite of water with embedded double-layered silicone resin/silver rods is considered. Approximate values of effective dynamical constitutive parameters are obtained. Frequency ranges of simultaneous negative constitutive parameters are found. Localized surface states on the interface between metamaterial and "normal" material are found. Doppler effect in metamaterial is considered. Presence of anomalous modes are shown.
We study the properties of electromagnetic Bloch waves in semi-infinite periodic structures created by alternating metamaterial and dielectric layers. We derive and analyze the dispersion relations in the long-wavelength limit for both TE- and TM-polarized surface Bloch modes, for magnetic metamaterials with negative refraction and metal-dielectric plasmonic superlattices. We reveal that in the subwavelength regime the bulk modes are characterized by three different refractive indices ("tri-refringence") while the surface modes can propagate parallel to the Bloch wavevector and along the inter…
Asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized waves is a well-established property of lossy, anisotropic, two-dimensionally chiral patterns. Here we show that asymmetric transmission can be observed for oblique incidence onto any lossy periodically structured plane. Our results greatly expand the range of natural and artificial materials in which directionally asymmetric transmission can be expected making it a cornerstone electromagnetic effect rather than a curiosity of planar chiral metamaterials. Prime candidates for asymmetric transmission at oblique incidence are rectangular arrays of …
We analyze surface electromagnetic waves with hyperbolic dispersion supported at the interface between a semi-infinite isotropic medium and an effective uniaxial material. Apart from known types plasmons with hyperbolic dispersion curve, sometimes referred to as Dyakonov plasmons [Z. Jacob and E. E. Narimanov, APL 93, 221109 (2008)], we classify two new types of surface waves with hyperbolic dispersion. One type of such waves, in contrary to Dyakonov plasmons, does not require hyperbolic metamaterials to be involved. These hybrid-polarized plasmon modes with both TE and TM electromagnetic comp…
We inspect the optical properties of dissipative double-negative metamaterials (DNMM) and find explicit expression for the total reflection angle and the correct Fresnel formulae describing the reflection and refraction for the DNMM at the oblique incident of the electromagnetic wave on the interface for \textit{TE} as well as \textit{TM} electromagnetic wave polarization. The reflectivity and transmissivity of DNMM film embedded in a positive refraction index (PIM) surrounding are presented and discussed.
Temporal metamaterials have been recently exploited as a novel platform for conceiving several electromagnetic and optical devices based on the anomalous scattering response arising at a single or multiple sudden changes of the material properties. However, they are difficult to implement in realistic scenarios by switching the permittivity of a material in time, and new strategies to achieve time interfaces in a feasible manner must be identified. In this paper, we investigate the possibility to realize a temporal metamaterial without acting on the material properties, but rather on the effec…
We use the theory of inhomogeneous waves to study the transmission of light in $μ$-near-zero metamaterials. We find the effect of all-angle collimation of incident light, which means that the vector of energy flow in a wave transmitted to a $μ$-near-zero metamaterial is perpendicular to the interface for any incident angles if an incident wave is s-polarized. This effect is similar to the all-angle collimation of incident light recently found through a different theoretical framework in $\varepsilon$-near-zero metamaterials for a p-polarized incident wave [S. Feng, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 193904…
We develop a concept for a waveguide that exploits spatial control of nonlinear surface-polaritonic waves. Our scheme includes an optical cavity with four-level $\text{N}$-type atoms in a lossless dielectric placed above a negative-index metamaterial layer. We propose exciting a polaritonic Akhmediev breather at a certain position of the interface between the atomic medium and the metamaterial by modifying laser-field intensities and detunings. Furthermore, we propose generating position-dependent polaritonic frequency combs by engineering widths of the electromagnetically induced transparency…
We report on the theoretical investigation of the plasmonic wave propagation in the coaxial cylindrical cables fabricated of both right-handed medium (RHM) [with $ε>0$, $μ>0$] and left-handed medium (LHM) [with $ε(ω) <0$, $μ(ω) <0$], using a Green-function (or response function) theory in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The Green-function theory generalized to be applicable to such quasi-one dimensional systems enables us to derive explicit expressions for the corresponding response functions (associated with the EM fields), which can in turn be used to derive various physical proper…
We propose a scheme for creating of a maximally entangled state comprising two field quanta. In our scheme, two weak light fields, which are initially prepared in either coherent or polarization states, interact with a composite medium near an interface between a dielectric and a negative index metamaterial. Such interaction leads to a large Kerr nonlinearity, reduction of the group velocity of the light and significant confinement of the light fields while simultaneously avoiding amplitude losses of the incoming radiation. All these considerations make our scheme efficient.
We consider spin angular momentum density in inhomogeneous acoustic fields: evanescent waves and surface waves at interfaces with negative-density metamaterials. Despite being purely longitudinal (curl-free), acoustic waves possess intrinsic vector properties described by the velocity field. Motivated by the recent description and observation of the spin properties in elastic and acoustic waves, we compare these properties with their well-known electromagnetic counterparts. Surprisingly, both the transverse spin of evanescent waves and the parameters of surface waves are very similar in electr…
The polarization-sensitive propagation in the anisotropic metamaterial (AMM) with double-sheeted hyperboloid dispersion relation is investigated from a purely wave propagation point of view. We show that TE and TM polarized waves present significantly different characteristics which depend on the polarization. The omnidirectional total reflection and oblique total transmission can occur in the interface associated with the AMM. If appropriate conditions are satisfied, one polarized wave exhibits the total refraction, while the other presents the total reflection. We find that the opposite amph…
By using an elegant response function theory, which does not require matching of the messy boundary conditions, we investigate the surface plasmon excitations in the multicoaxial cylindrical cables made up of negative-index metamaterials. The multicoaxial cables with {\em dispersive} metamaterial components exhibit rather richer (and complex) plasmon spectrum with each interface supporting two modes: one TM and the other TE for (the integer order of the Bessel function) $m \ne 0$. The cables with {\em nondispersive} metamaterial components bear a different tale: they do not support simultaneou…
Above-light-line surface plasmon polaritons can arise at the interface between a metal and epsilon-near-zero metamaterial. This unique feature induces unusual fast-wave non-radiative modes in a epsilon-near-zero material/metal bilayer. Excitation of this peculiar mode leads to wide-angle perfect absorption in low-loss ultrathin metamaterials. The ratio of the perfect absorption wavelength to the thickness of the epsilon-near-zero metamaterial can be as high as 10^4; the electromagnetic energy can be confined in a layer as thin as λ/10000. Unlike conventional fast-wave leaky modes, these fast-w…

Interest for spacetime structures has recently been revived, following developments in metamaterials and ultrafast optics. Such structures essentially consist of successions of space-time interfaces for which the theory is still incomplete, in particular in the regime where the interface velocity lies between the wave velocities in the two media involved. This paper addresses this `interluminal' regime, providing exact scattering solutions for both approaching and receding interfaces. The solutions are verified to be consistent with the transmission matrix perspective and to be continuous at t…
It is well-known that classical optical cavities can exhibit localized phenomena associated to scattering resonances, leading to numerical instabilities in approximating the solution. This result can be established via the ``quasimodes to resonances'' argument from the black-box scattering framework. Those localized phenomena concentrate at the inner boundary of the cavity and are called whispering gallery modes. In this paper we investigate scattering resonances for unbounded transmission problems with sign-changing coefficient (corresponding to optical cavities with negative optical properti…
It is shown that, by theoretical and experimental results, a universal zero-impedance condition exists for two kinds of localized interface modes in the whole momentum space (both above and below the light line). It can be applied at the interface between any two materials including photonic crystals, single-negative (negative-permittivity or negative-permeability) materials, or double-negative metamaterials. In addition, it presents an intuitive physical concept, and also provides a feasible way to determine interface modes, which will have predominance in various applications.
Since the dawn of modern optics and electromagnetics, optical prism is one of the most fascinating optical elements for refracting light. Exploiting its frequency dispersive behaviour, a prism is able to refract different frequencies in different directions, realizing polychromatic light rainbows. Recently, thanks to their engineerable electromagnetic response, metamaterials have been exploited for achieving novel refractive scattering processes, going beyond the classical prism effects. In this Manuscript, we report on a novel rainbow-like scattering process taking place at the interface of a…
Negative reflection and negative refraction are exotic phenomena that can be achieved by platforms such as double-negative metamaterial, hyperbolic metamaterial, and phase-discontinuity metasurface. Recently, natural biaxial van der Waals (vdW) materials, which support extremely anisotropic, low-loss, and highly confined polaritons from infrared to visible regime, are emerging as promising candidates for planar reflective and refractive optics. Here, we introduce three degrees of freedom, namely interface, crystal direction, and electric tunability to manipulate the reflection and refraction o…
Inspired by the parity-time symmetry concept, we show that a judicious spatial modulation of gain and loss in epsilon-near-zero metamaterials can induce the propagation of exponentially-bound interface modes characterized by zero attenuation. With specific reference to a bi-layer configuration, via analytical studies and parameterization of the dispersion equation, we show that this waveguiding mechanism can be sustained in the presence of moderate gain/loss levels, and it becomes leaky (i.e., radiative) below a gain/loss threshold. Moreover, we explore a possible rod-based metamaterial implem…
Coated and multicoated cylinder systems constitute an appealing metamaterial category, as they allow a very rich and highly tunable response, resulting from the interplay of the many different geometrical and material parameters involved. Here we derive and propose an effective medium approach for the detailed description and analysis of the electromagnetic wave propagation in such systems. In particular, we investigate infinitely-long multilayered cylinders with additional electric and magnetic surface conductivities at each interface. Our effective medium approach is based on the well known …
Wave propagation control is of fundamental interest in many areas of Physics. It can be achieved with wavelength-scaled photonic crystals, hence avoiding low frequency applications. By contrast, metamaterials are structured on a deep-subwavelength scale, and therefore usually described through homogenization, neglecting the unit-cell structuration. Here, we show with microwaves that, by considering their inherent crystallinity, we can induce wave propagation carrying angular momenta within a subwavelength-scaled collection of wires. Then, inspired by the Quantum Valley-Hall Effect in condensed…

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) lasing requires population inversion, it is inefficient and possesses poor spectral properties. We develop an inversion-less concept for a quantum plasmonic waveguide that exploits unidirectional superradiant SPP emission of radiation to produce intense coherent surface plasmon beams. Our scheme includes a resonantly driven cold atomic medium in a lossless dielectric situated above an ultra-low loss negative index metamaterial~(NIMM) layer. We propose generating unidirectional superradiant radiation of the plasmonic field within an atomic medium and a NIMM lay…
We introduce a theory of optical responses of bianisotropic layers with arbitrary effective medium parameters, which results in generalized Fresnel-Airy equations for reflection and transmission coefficients at all incidence directions and polarizations. The poles of these equations provide explicit expressions for the dispersion of Fabry-Perot resonances and surface electromatic waves in bianisotropic layers and interfaces. The existence conditions of these resonances are topologically related to the zeros of the high-k characteristic function h(k)=0 of bulk bianisotropic materials and Durach…

Maxwell electromagnetism, describing the wave properties of light, was formulated 150 years ago. More than 60 years ago it was shown that interfaces between optical media (including dielectrics, metals, negative-index materials) can support surface electromagnetic waves, which now play crucial roles in plasmonics, metamaterials, and nano-photonics. Here we show that surface Maxwell waves at interfaces between homogeneous, isotropic media described by real permittivities and permeabilities have a purely topological origin explained by the bulk-boundary correspondence. Importantly, the topologic…
We discuss and clarify some misleading statements appeared in a recent article on negative refraction in metamaterials. In this comment, we straighten the physical meaning and underlying phenomena behind negative refraction and negative index metamaterials and show that these phenomena are perfectly consistent with causality. It is hoped that this comment draws the attention of authors, reviewers and readers to the large body of rigorous analytical, numerical, and experimental evidence in favor of negative refraction at a single interface, so as to avoid reviving settled debates which mislead,…
Time varying media recently emerged as promising candidates to fulfill the dream of controlling the wave frequency without nonlinear effects. However, frequency conversion remains limited by the dynamics of the variations of the propagation properties. Here we propose a new concept of space-time cascade to achieve arbitrary large frequency shifts by iterated elementary transformation cycles. These cycles use an intermediate medium in which wave packets enter and exit through non-commutative space and time interfaces. This concept avoids high frequency or sub-wavelength demanding metamaterials.…
