Asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized waves is a well-established property of lossy, anisotropic, two-dimensionally chiral patterns. Here we show that asymmetric transmission can be observed for oblique incidence onto any lossy periodically structured plane. Our results greatly expand the range of natural and artificial materials in which directionally asymmetric transmission can be expected making it a cornerstone electromagnetic effect rather than a curiosity of planar chiral metamaterials. Prime candidates for asymmetric transmission at oblique incidence are rectangular arrays of plasmonic spheres or semiconductor quantum dots, lossy double-periodic gratings and planar metamaterial structures.
In this paper the characteristic matrix method is used to study the propagation of electromagnetic waves through one-dimensional lossy photonic crystals composed of negative and positive refractive index material layers with symmetric and asymmetric geometric structures with a defect layer at the center of the structure. First, the positive index material defect layer is considered, and the effects of the polarization and the angle of incidence on the defect mode in the transmission spectra of the both structures are investigated. The results show that the number of the defect modes in the tra…
We report a 1D planar optical waveguide with transverse distribution of inhomogeneous loss profile, which exhibits an exceptional point (EP). The waveguide hosts two leaky resonant modes; where the interaction between them in the vicinity of the EP is controlled by proper adjustment of the inhomogeneity in attenuation profile only. We study the adiabatic dynamics of propagation constants of the coupled modes by quasi-static encirclement of control parameters around the EP. Realizing such an encirclement with the inhomogeneous loss distribution along the direction of light propagation, we repor…
We theoretically investigate quantum interference of two single photons at a lossy asymmetric beam splitter, the most general passive 2$\times$2 optical circuit. The losses in the circuit result in a non-unitary scattering matrix with a non-trivial set of constraints on the elements of the scattering matrix. Our analysis using the noise operator formalism shows that the loss allows tunability of quantum interference to an extent not possible with a lossless beam splitter. Our theoretical studies support the experimental demonstrations of programmable quantum interference in highly multimodal s…
Inspired by non-Hermitian systems, we study reflection and transmission in a stack of thin films composed by the repetition of a bipartite unit cell. We aim for controlled reflection and transmission using lossless and lossy materials in order to develop an optical diode to generate entanglement photons source. Particularly, we show unidirectional reflection using transfer matrix methods and confirm our results by finite element simulation.
We extend the ideas of the recently proposed perfect lens [J.B. Pendry, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 3966 (2000)] to an alternative structure. We show that a slab of a medium with negative refractive index bounded by media of different positive refractive index also amplifies evanescent waves and can act as a near-perfect lens. We examine the role of the surface states in the amplification of the evanescent waves. The image resolution obtained by this asymmetric lens is more robust against the effects of absorption in the lens. In particular, we study the case of a slab of silver, which has nega…
Most transmission and detection channels fail to faithfully support broadband wave packets because of physical limitations, like chromatic dispersion and absorption. We explore the case of lossy detection of ultrashort THz pulses using the widespread electro-optic detection scheme. We demonstrate that one can fully recover the original THz pulse shape, duration and amplitude, using a simple experimental procedure and a reconstruction algorithm which encodes the physical properties of the detection system.
We show that asymmetric transmission for linear polarizations can be easily achieved by a monolayer of anisotropic chiral metamolecules through the constructive and destructive interferences between the contributions from anisotropy and chirality. Our analysis is based on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the constituent electric and magnetic dipoles of the metamaterials, and an effective medium formulation. In addition, asymmetric transmission in amplitude can be effectively controlled by the interference between spectrally detuned resonances. Our findings shed light on the design…
The idea of asymmetric light transmission through a photonic crystal with relaxing Kerr nonlinearity is presented. This idea is based on the symmetry breaking due to the self-trapping of intensive pump pulse inside the structure. As a result, the asymmetric transmission of the secondary (probe) pulses through the perturbed photonic crystal can be observed. The cases of short and long (quasi-continuous) probe pulses are considered.
We experimentally demonstrate a three-dimensional chiral optical metamaterial that exhibits an asymmetric transmission for forwardly and backwardly propagating linearly polarized light. The observation of this novel effect requires a metamaterial composed of three-dimensional chiral metaatoms without any rotational symmetry. Our analysis is supported by a systematic investigation of the transmission matrices for arbitrarily complex, lossy media that allows deriving a simple criterion for asymmetric transmission in an arbitrary polarization base. Contrary to physical intuition, in general the p…
In this letter, we show that asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized waves through a nanostructured planar chiral graphene film can be observed in terahertz range. The asymmetric transmission effect of monatomic layer graphene closely resembles that of metallic planar chiral nanostructures which has previously been demonstrated. And the relative enantiomeric difference in the total transmission varies with the change of graphene's Fermi level. The plasmonic excitation in the graphene nanostructure is the enantiometically sensitive which is asymmetric for opposite propagating directions…
General principles for the existence of perfect transmission resonances in photonic multilayer structures are formulated in terms of light interference described by recurrent Airy formulas. Mirror symmetry in the multilayer is shown to be a sufficient but not necessary condition for perfect transmission resonances. Asymmetric structures displaying perfect transmission in accordance with the proposed principles are demonstrated. A hybrid Fabry-Perot/photonic-crystal structure of the type (BA)^k(AB)^k(AABB)^m is proposed, combining perfect transmission and highly asymmetric electric field locali…
We demonstrate that a strong asymmetric transmission for forward and backward propagation of tilted circular polarized optical waves is supported by ultrathin epsilon-near-zero hyperbolic slabs. We find that, remarkably, this effect is solely triggered by anisotropy without resorting to any breaking of reciprocity and chiral symmetries or spatial nonlocal effects. In addition, we show that the asymmetric transmission undergoes a dramatic enhancement if the slab is hyperbolic in the epsilon-near-zero regime. This happens since, close to epsilon-near-zero point, the hyperbolic dispersion activat…
We study parametric amplification in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines, which serve as model systems for nonlinear negative index metamaterials. We experimentally demonstrate amplification of a weak pump signal in three regimes: with the signal in the left-handed band, with the signal in the stop band, and with the signal at a defect frequency. In particular, we demonstrate the amplification of the incident wave by up to 15dB in the left-handed regime.
Light propagation in asymmetric Kerr-nonlinear multilayers with perfect transmission resonances is theoretically investigated. It is found that hybrid Fabry-Pérot/photonic-crystal structures of the type (BA)^k(AB)^k(AABB)^m exhibit both pronounced unidirectionality (due to strong spatial asymmetry of the resonant mode) and high transmission (due to the existence of a perfect transmission resonance). This results in nonlinear optical diode action with low reflection losses without need for a pumping beam or input pulse modulation. By slightly perturbing the perfect transmission resonance condit…
Transmission properties of one-dimensional lossy photonic crystals composed of negative and positive refractive index layers with one lossless defect layer at the center of the crystal are investigated by the characteristic matrix method. The results show that as the refractive index and thickness of the defect layer increase the frequency of the defect mode decreases. In addition, it is shown that the frequency of the defect mode is sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization and physical properties of the defect layer but it is insensitive to the small lattice loss factor. The height of t…
We show for the first time that a planar metamaterial, an array of coupled metal split-ring resonators with a unit cell lacking mirror symmetry, exhibits asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation (0.25-2.5 THz) propagating through it in opposite directions. This intriguing effect, that is compatible with Lorentz reciprocity and time-reversal, depends on a directional difference in conversion efficiency of the incident circularly polarized wave into one of opposite handedness, that is only possible in lossy low-symmetry planar chiral metamaterials. We show that asymmetric transmission is l…
The existing metasurfaces with ultrathin volume for asymmetric transmission were often constructed by metal with low efficiency in optical frequency, and could not realize the optical asymmetric transmission and focusing simultaneously. Although the acoustic asymmetric focusing in asymmetric focusing lens (AFL) was realized, the obtained focal point was accompanied by large sidelobe. To solve those problems, an AFL with dual-layer metasurfaces designed by using dielectric materials can realize optical asymmetric transmission and focusing simultaneously in this paper. Furtherly, through optimiz…
This study proposes an ultrathin chiral metamaterial slab stacked with twisted complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) for highly efficient broadband polarization transformation. The polarization of linearly polarized electromagnetic waves can be rotated in a specific direction by passing it through such a slab having a thickness of about one-tenth the operational wavelength. Microwave experiments verified the theoretically predicted conversion efficiency of up to 96% covering a bandwidth of 24% of the central wavelength. CSRRs with circular symmetry provide increased interlayer coupling s…
In this paper the transmission of electromagnetic waves through a one-dimensional lossy photonic crystal consisting of layers with negative and positive refractive indices is investigated. The behavior and characteristics of the bandwidth, the depth and the central frequency of the zero-n gap for different incidence angles, polarization, loss factor and ratios of thickness of the layers are studied. The results show that the gap is very sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization and the thickness ratio, but it is nearly insensitive to small loss factor. Such properties are quite useful in …
In this paper, a bilateral asymmetric equilateral triangular ring (ETR) band-stop filter based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide is proposed. The transmission spectrum and electric field distribution of the filter are simulated and theoretically investigated by finite difference time domain (FDTD) and coupled mode theory (CMT) method. The results show that changing the number and position of resonant cavities can adjust the transmission characteristics of the filter. The minimum transmission and sensitivity of this filter is 0.19% and 1149 nm/RIU, respectively. The filters have broad pr…
The electronic Lorentz theory is employed to determine the electromagnetic response of planar split-ring metamaterials. Starting from the dynamics of individual free carriers, the effective permittivity tensor of the metamaterial is calculated. Whenever the split ring lacks in-plane mirror symmetry, the corresponding permittivity tensor has a crystallographic structure of an elliptically dichroic medium, and the metamaterial exhibits optical properties of planar chiral structures. Its transmission spectra are different for right-handed vs. left-handed circular polarization of the incident wave…
We describe a surface structure consisting of a metal-air interface where the metallic part consists of two metallic segments with a periodic modulation of the interface between them. Such a structure possesses a different transmissivity for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from one side of it than it has for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from the opposite side. This asymmetric transmission of a surface plasmon polariton is based on the suppression of the zero-order Bragg beam which, for a certain value of the modulation depth, is not transmitted through the structure, w…
The ability to control the asymmetric propagation of light in nanophotonic waveguides is of fundamental importance for optical communications and on-chip signal processing. However, in most studies so far, the design of such structures has been based on asymmetric mode conversion where multi-mode waveguides are involved. Here we propose a hybrid plasmonic structure that performs optical diode behavior via breaking polarization symmetry in single mode waveguides. The exploited physical mechanism is based on the combination of polarization rotation and polarization selection. The whole device is…
A multi-layered structure consisting of alternate right-handed material (RHM) and left-handed material (LHM)is considered and the unusual narrow transmission bands are explained as the competitive results of the Bragg condition and the transparent condition. These unusual narrow transmission bands may exist regardless whether the optical length of the LHM layer cancels the optical length of the RHM layer or not. This unusual transmission property may disappear when the reflection coefficient for each interface is small and the optical length of the LHM layer does not cancel the optical length …
In the last ten years, the technology of differential geometry, ubiquitous in gravitational physics, has found its place in the field of optics. It has been successfully used in the design of optical metamaterials, through a technique now known as "transformation optics". This method, however, only applies for the particular class of metamaterials known as impedance matched, that is, materials whose electric permittivity is equal to their magnetic permeability. In that case, the material may be described by a spacetime metric. In the present work we will introduce a generalization of the geome…
