Efficient transmission of elastic waves across interfaces is central to several applications, including medical imaging, seismic isolation, and transducer design. Interfaces with abrupt changes in the material properties significantly impede wave transmission, leading to reflections. This limitation, known as impedance mismatch, becomes even more prominent for mode conversion between different wave types due to polarization mismatch. In this study, we investigate a mechanism employing two-dimensional functionally graded anisotropic metamaterials to facilitate longitudinal--shear mode conversion as waves propagate from a stiff to a compliant medium. By embedding density and anisotropic shape gradients within the functionally graded metamaterial, polarization-induced impedance mismatch is mitigated and efficient mode conversion is enabled. We use unit cell dispersion analysis to tailor the frequency range for mode conversion through gradation in the dispersion behavior and coupling between modes. Using frequency-domain finite element analysis, we demonstrate broadband mode conversion across interfaces with large stiffness contrast operating in the 1--10 kHz range. We then experimentally validate and quantify mode conversion through full-field velocity measurements on an additively manufactured specimen. We further apply the methodology to design a device capable of converting radial--tangential wave modes.
The local electric field distribution has been investigated in a core-shell cylindrical metamaterial structure under the illumination of a uniform incident optical field. The structure consists of a homogeneous dielectric core, a shell of graded metal-dielectric metamaterial, embedded in a uniform matrix. In the quasi-static limit, the permittivity of the metamaterial is given by the graded Drude model. The local electric potentials and hence the electric fields have been derived exactly and analytically in terms of hyper-geometric functions. Our results showed that the peak of the electric fi…
We theoretically investigate elastic waves propagating in metamaterials with simultaneous zero indices for both the longitudinal and transverse waves. With scattering objects (here cylinders) present in the metamaterials slabs, while the elastic waves can mostly transmit through the metamaterials slabs perfectly, exhibiting the well-known cloaking effect of zero index metamaterials, they nevertheless become totally blocked at resonances, indicating strong elastic waves scattering by the objects in the cases. However, despite the occurrence of the elastic waves scattering, there is, counter-int…
As an emerging electricity-free cooling technology, radiative cooling employs outer space as the heat sink. With this, a sky-facing thermal emitter is usually required. Due to the black-body radiation limit at ambient temperature, the maximum cooling power density for a single-faced radiative cooling device is ~156.9 W/m2. Here we report a double-sided radiative cooling architecture using graded nanocomposite metamaterials (GNM) designed for a vertically aligned thermal emitter. This GNM structure possesses an optical absorption of over 90% throughout the solar spectrum, and exceeds 90% reflec…
Space-time modulated metamaterials support extraordinary rich applications, such as parametric amplification, frequency conversion and non-reciprocal transmission. However, experimental realization of space-time modulation is highly non-trivial, hindering many interesting physics that are theoretically predicted to be experimentally demonstrated. Here, based on the proposed virtualized metamaterials with software-defined impulse response, we experimentally realize non-Hermitian space-time varying metamaterials for efficient and asymmetric frequency conversion by allowing material gain and loss…
On the heels of metamaterial absorbers (MAs) which produce near perfect electromagnetic (EM) absorption and emission, we propose a universal electromagnetic energy conversion adapter (UEECA) based on MA. By choosing the appropriate energy converting sensors, the UEECA is able to achieve near 100% signal transfer ratio between EM energy and various forms of energy such as thermal, DC electric, or higher harmonic EM energy. The inherited subwavelength dimension and the EM field intensity enhancement can further empower UEECA in many critical applications such as energy harvesting, solar cell, an…
We propose a design for broadband waveguide mode conversion based on gradient index metamaterials (GIMs). Numerical simulations demonstrate that the zeroth order of transverse magnetic mode or the first order of transverse electric mode (TM0/TE1) can be converted into the first order of transverse magnetic mode or the second order of transverse electric mode (TM1/TE2) for a broadband of frequencies. As an application, an asymmetric propagation is achieved by integrating zero index metamaterials inside the GIM waveguide.
We propose a thermoelectric device that can produce a thermal gradient even in a uniform-temperature environment. We introduced a metamaterial absorber (MA), which comprised a transparent calcium fluoride layer sandwiched between a silver mirror layer and silver microdisk arrays, at one end of a thermoelectric device made of bismuth antimony telluride. The heating efficiencies of the MA and opposite electrodes of the device were unbalanced; consequently, the Seebeck effect was induced, resulting in electricity generation. We fabricated the MA on a copper electrode loaded on a thermoelectric de…
The metamaterial is proposed which supports a mixture of three or more normal and backward electromagnetic modes with equal co-directed phase velocities and mutually contra-directed energy fluxes. This enables extraordinary three-wave mixing, greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification and frequency-changing generation of entangled photons in the reflection direction. Proof-of-principle numerical simulation of such processes is presented based on the particular example of the wave-guided THz waves contra-propagating in the metamaterial made of carbon nanotubes.
We theoretically investigate photothermal heating of ultra-flexible metamaterials, which are obtained by randomly mixing TiN nanoparticles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Due to the plasmonic properties of TiN nanoparticles, incident light is perfectly absorbed in a broadband range (300-3000 nm) to generate heat within these metamaterials. Under irradiation of an 808 nm near-infrared laser with different intensities, our predicted temperature rises as a function of time agree well with recent experimental data. For a given laser intensity, the temperature rise varies non-monotonically with con…
Polarization is one of the basic properties of electromagnetic waves conveying valuable information in signal transmission and sensitive measurements. Conventional methods for advanced polarization control impose demanding requirements on material properties and attain only limited performance. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin, broadband, and highly efficient metamaterial-based terahertz polarization converters that are capable of rotating a linear polarization state into its orthogonal one. Based on these results we create metamaterial structures capable of realizing near-perfect anomalous refr…
We report the first experiential observation and theoretical analysis of the new phenomenon of planar chiral circular conversion dichroism, which in some aspects resembles the Faraday effect in magnetized media, but does not require the presence of a magnetic field for its observation. It results from the interaction of an electromagnetic wave with a planar chiral structure patterned on the sub-wavelength scale, and manifests itself in asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized waves in the opposite directions through the structure and elliptically polarized eigenstates. The new effect is…

In this paper we analyze the theoretical limits of a metamaterial converter that allows for linear-to- elliptical polarization transformation with any desired ellipticity and ellipse orientation. We employ the transmission line approach providing a needed level of the design generalization. Our analysis reveals that the maximal conversion efficiency for transmission through a single metamaterial layer is 50%, while the realistic re ection configuration can give the conversion efficiency up to 90%. We show that a double layer transmission converter and a single layer with a ground plane can hav…
We propose the use of graded-index few-mode fibers for mode-conversion by long-period gratings (LPG) transiently written by ultrashort laser pulses using the optical Kerr effect. The mode inter- action is studied by numerically solving the multi-mode coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations. We present highly efficient conversion of the LP 01 - into the LP 11 -mode preserving the pulse shape in contrast to previous results in step-index fibers. Furthermore, mode conversion using different wavelengths for inducing and probing the LPG is shown. Due to the flat phase-matching curve of the examine…
Time has emerged as a new degree of freedom for metamaterials, promising new pathways in wave control. However, electromagnetism suffers from limitations in the modulation speed of material parameters. Here we argue that these limitations can be circumvented by introducing a traveling-wave refractive index modulation, with the same phase velocity of the waves. We show how the concept of "luminal grating" can yield giant nonreciprocity, achieve efficient one-way amplification, pulse compression and frequency up-conversion, proposing a realistic implementation in double-layer graphene.
Nonlinear optics is an increasingly important field for scientific and technological applications, owing to its relevance and potential for optical and optoelectronic technologies. Currently, there is an active search for suitable nonlinear material systems with efficient conversion and small material footprint. Ideally, the material system should allow for chip-integration and room-temperature operation. Two-dimensional materials are highly interesting in this regard. Particularly promising is graphene, which has demonstrated an exceptionally large nonlinearity in the terahertz regime. Yet, t…
We report on the experimental observation of a simultaneous threefold wavelength and spatial conversion process at telecommunication wavelengths taking place in a 6-LP-mode graded-index few-mode fiber. The physical mechanism is based on parallel and phase-matched frequency-degenerated intermodal four-wave mixing (FD-IFWM) phenomena occurring between the fundamental mode and higher-order spatial modes. More precisely, a single high-power frequency-degenerated pump wave is simultaneously injected in the four spatial modes LP01, LP11, LP02 and LP31 of a 1.8-km long graded-index few-mode fiber tog…
A bilayered chiral metamaterial (CMM) is proposed to realize a 90 degree polarization rotator, whose giant optical activity is due to the transverse magnetic dipole coupling among the metallic wire pairs of enantiomeric patterns. By transmission through this thin bilayered structure of less than λ/30 thick, a linearly polarized wave is converted to its cross polarization with a resonant polarization conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 90%. Meanwhile, the axial ratio of the transmitted wave is better than 40 dB. It is demonstrated that the chirality in the propagation direction makes this effic…
We show for the first time that a planar metamaterial, an array of coupled metal split-ring resonators with a unit cell lacking mirror symmetry, exhibits asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation (0.25-2.5 THz) propagating through it in opposite directions. This intriguing effect, that is compatible with Lorentz reciprocity and time-reversal, depends on a directional difference in conversion efficiency of the incident circularly polarized wave into one of opposite handedness, that is only possible in lossy low-symmetry planar chiral metamaterials. We show that asymmetric transmission is l…
We present an effective model for a subwavelength periodically patterned metallic layer, its cavities being filled with a nonlinear dielectric material, which accounts for both the linear and second order behavior. The effective non linear susceptibility for the homogenized layer is driven by the nonlinearity of the dielectric material and by the geometrical parameters, thus leading to much higher susceptibility than existing materials. This leads to a huge enhancement of non linear processes when used together with resonances. Furthermore, multiple resonances are taking place in the metallic …
We show that polarization states of electromagnetic waves can be manipulated easily using a single thin uniaxial crystal plate. By performing a rotational transformation of the coordinates and controlling the thickness of the plate, we can achieve a complete polarization conversion between TE wave and TM wave in a spectral band. We show that the off-diagonal element of the permittivity is the key for polarization conversion. Our analysis can explain clearly the results found in experiments with metamaterials. Finally, we propose a simple device to realize unidirectional transmission based on p…
Second harmonic generation (SHG) with a material of large transparency is an attractive way of generating coherent light sources at exotic wavelength range such as VUV, UV and visible light. It is of critical importance to improve nonlinear conversion efficiency in order to find practical applications in quantum light source and high resolution nonlinear microscopy, etc. Here an enhanced SHG with conversion efficiency up to the order of 0.01% at SH wavelength of 282 nm under 11 GW/cm2 pump power via the excitation of anapole in lithium niobite (LiNbO3, or LN) nanodisk through the dominating d3…

Time varying media recently emerged as promising candidates to fulfill the dream of controlling the wave frequency without nonlinear effects. However, frequency conversion remains limited by the dynamics of the variations of the propagation properties. Here we propose a new concept of space-time cascade to achieve arbitrary large frequency shifts by iterated elementary transformation cycles. These cycles use an intermediate medium in which wave packets enter and exit through non-commutative space and time interfaces. This concept avoids high frequency or sub-wavelength demanding metamaterials.…
High-index dielectrics can confine light into nano-scale leading to enhanced nonlinear response. However, increased momentum in these media can deteriorate the overlap between different harmonics which hinders efficient nonlinear interaction in wavelength-scale resonators in the absence of momentum matching. Here, we propose an alternative approach for light confinement in anisotropic particles. The extra degree of freedom in anisotropic media allows us to control the evanescent waves near the center and the radial momentum away from the center, independently. This can lead to a strong light c…
The ability to exploit the on-chip nonlinear generation of new frequencies has opened the door to a plethora of applications in fundamental and applied physics. Excitation of dispersive waves is a particularly interesting process that allows efficient nonlinear wavelength conversion by phase-matching of a soliton and waves in the normal dispersion regime. However, controlling the wavelength of dispersive waves in integrated waveguides remains an open challenge, hampering versatile shaping of the nonlinear spectral response. Here, we show that metamaterial silicon waveguides release new degrees…
The future fibre optic communications network will rely on photons as carriers of information, which may be stored in intensity, polarization or phase of light. However, processing of such optical information usually relies on electronics. Aiming to avoid the conversion between optical and electronic signals, modulation of light with light based on optical nonlinearity has become a major research field, but real integrated all-optical systems face thermal management and energy challenges. On the other hand, it has recently been demonstrated that the interaction of two coherent light beams on a…
We show that deliberately engineered spatially dispersive metamaterial slab can enable co-existence and phase matching of contra-propagating ordinary fundamental and backward second harmonic electromagnetic modes. Energy flux and phase velocity are contra-directed in backward waves which determines extraordinary nonlinear-optical propagation processes. Frequencies, phase and group velocities, as well as nanowavequide losses inherent to the electromagnetic modes supported by the metamaterial can be tailored to optimize nonlinear-optical conversion of frequencies and propagation directions of th…
Metamaterials based on effective media have achieved a lot of unusual physics (e.g. negative refraction and invisibility cloaking) owing to their abilities to tailor the effective medium parameters that do not exist in nature. Recently, coding metamaterials have been suggested to control electromagnetic waves by designing the coding sequences of digital elements '0' and '1', which possess opposite phase responses. Here, we propose the concept of anisotropic coding metamaterial at terahertz frequencies, in which coding behaviors in different directions are dependent on the polarization status o…
We study theoretically the cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in broadband tapered plasmonic nanoantennas and demonstrate a 300-fold increase in nonlinear frequency conversion detected in the main lobe of the nanoantenna far-field pattern. This is achieved by tuning the elements of the nanoantenna to resonate frequencies involved into the FWM interaction. Our findings have a potentially broad application in ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy, sensing, on-chip optical frequency conversion, nonlinear optical metamaterials and photon sources.
Mode conversion of transverse electromagnetic waves into longitudinal oscillations and the associated resonant absorption of wave energy in inhomogeneous plasmas is a phenomenon that has been studied extensively in plasma physics. We show that precisely analogous phenomena occur generically in electronic and photonic systems where dispersionless flat bands and dispersive bands coexist in the presence of an inhomogeneous potential or medium parameter. We demonstrate that the systems described by the pseudospin-1 Dirac equation with two dispersive bands and one flat band display mode conversion …
Resonant modes in metamaterials have been widely utilized to amplify the optical response of 2D materials for practical device applications. However, the high loss at the resonant mode severely hinders metamaterial applications. Here, we introduce a field-enhancement gain (FEG) factor to find the FEG mode for significantly improving light-matter interaction. As a demonstration, we experimentally compared the second harmonic generation enhancement of monolayer MoS2 induced by the optimal FEG and resonant modes in hyperbolic meta-structures. With the optimal FEG mode, we obtained an enhancement …
We show that deliberately engineered dispersive metamaterial slab can enable the co-existence and phase matching of contra-propagating ordinary fundamental and extraordinary backward second harmonic surface electromagnetic modes. Energy flux and phase velocity are contra-directed in the backward waves which is the phenomenon that gives rise to unique nonlinear optical propagation processes. We show that frequencies, phase, and group velocities, as well as nanowaveguide losses inherent to the electromagnetic modes supported by such metamaterial, can be tailored to maximize conversion of frequen…
The common behavior of a wave is determined by wave parameters of its medium, which are generally associated with the characteristic oscillations of its corresponding elementary particles. In the context of metamaterials, the decoupled excitation of these fundamental oscillations would provide an ideal platform for top-down and reconfigurable access to the entire space of constitutive wave parameters; however, this has remained as a conceivable problem that must be accomplished, after being pointed out by Pendry. Here, by focusing on acoustic metamaterials, we achieve the decoupling of density…
A possibility to greatly enhance frequency-conversion efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering is shown by making use of extraordinary properties of three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward waves. Such processes are commonly attributed to negative-index plasmonic metamaterials. This work demonstrates the possibility to replace such metamaterials that are very challenging to engineer by readily available crystals which support elastic waves with contra-directed phase and group velocities. The main goal of this work is to investigate specific properties of indicated nonlinear optical process …
Dynamically switchable half-/quarter-wave plates have recently been the focus in the terahertz regime. Conventional design philosophy leads to multilayer metamaterials or narrowband metasurfaces. Here we propose a novel design philosophy and a VO2-metal hybrid metasurface for achieving broadband dynamically switchable half-/quarter-wave plate (HWP/QWP) based on the transition from the overdamped to the underdamped resonance. Results show that, by varying the VO2 conductivity by three orders of magnitude, the proposed metasurface's function can be switched between an HWP with polarization conve…
