Recent advances in the integrated modeling of ELMy H-mode plasmas are presented. A model for the H-mode pedestal and for the triggering of ELMs predicts the height, width, and shape of the H-mode pedestal and the frequency and width of ELMs. Formation of the pedestal and the L-H transition is the direct result of ExB flow shear suppression of anomalous transport. The periodic ELM crashes are triggered by either the ballooning or peeling MHD instabilities. The BALOO, DCON, and ELITE ideal MHD stability codes are used to derive a new parametric expression for the peeling-ballooning threshold. The new dependence for the peeling-ballooning threshold is implemented in the ASTRA transport code. Results of integrated modeling of DIII-D like discharges are presented and compared with experimental observations. The results from the ideal MHD stability codes are compared with results from the resistive MHD stability code NIMROD.
Pellet ELM triggering is a well established scheme for decreasing the time between two successive ELM crashes below its natural value. Reliable ELM pacing has been demonstrated experimentally in several devices increasing the ELM frequency considerably. However, it was also shown that the frequency cannot be increased arbitrarily due to a so-called lag-time. During this time after a preceding natural or triggered ELM crash, neither a natural ELM crash occurs nor the triggering of an ELM crash by pellet injection is possible. For this article, pellet ELM triggering simulations are advanced beyo…
A triggering mechanism responsible for the explosive onset of edge localised modes (ELMs) in fusion plasmas is identified by performing, for the first time, non-linear magnetohydrodynamic simulations of repetitive type-I ELMs. Briefly prior to the ELM crash, destabilising and stabilising terms are affected at different timescales by an increasingly ergodic magnetic field caused by non-linear interactions between the axisymmetric background plasma and growing non-axisymmetric perturbations. The separation of timescales prompts the explosive, i.e. faster than exponential, growth of an ELM crash …
The type I ELMy H-mode is the baseline operating scenario for ITER. While it is known that the type I ELM ultimately results from the peeling-ballooning instability, there is growing experimental evidence that a mode grows up before the ELM crash that may modify the edge plasma, which then leads to the ELM event due to the peeling-ballooning mode. The triggered mode results in the release of a large number of particles and energy from the core plasma but the precise mechanism by which these losses occur is still not fully understood and hence makes predictions for future devices uncertain. Our…
During July 2012, 150 almost identical H-mode plasmas were consecutively created in the Joint European Torus (JET), providing a combined total of approximately 8 minutes of steady-state plasma with 15,000 Edge Localised Modes (ELMs). In principle, each of those 15,000 ELMs are statistically equivalent. Here the changes in edge density and plasma energy associated with those ELMs are explored, using the spikes in Beryllium II (527 nm) radiation as an indicator for the onset of an ELM. Two timescales are found during the ELM process. The first timescale is associated with the density drop, and t…
The application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with a toroidal mode number of n=3 to connected double null plasmas in the MAST tokamak produces up to a factor of 9 increase in Edge Localized Mode (ELM) frequency and reduction in plasma energy loss associated with type-I ELMs. A threshold current for ELM mitigation is observed above which the ELM frequency increases approximately linearly with current in the coils. The effect of the RMPs is found to be scenario dependent. In one scenario the mitigation is only due to a large density pump out event and if the density is recovered by g…
The application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with a toroidal mode number of n=4 or n=6 to lower single null plasmas in the MAST tokamak produces up to a factor of 5 increase in Edge Localized Mode (ELM) frequency and reduction in plasma energy loss associated with type-I ELMs. A threshold current for ELM mitigation is observed above which the ELM frequency increases approximately linearly with current in the coils. Despite a large scan of parameters, complete ELM suppression has not been achieved. The results have been compared to modelling performed using either the vacuum approx…
Edge localised mode (ELM) measurements from reproducibly similar plasmas in the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak, which differ only in their gas puffing rate, are analysed in terms of the pattern in the sequence of inter-ELM time intervals. It is found that the category of ELM defined empirically as Type I - typically more regular, less frequent, and having larger amplitude than other ELM types - embraces substantially different ELMing processes. By quantifying the structure in the sequence of inter-ELM time intervals using delay time plots, we reveal transitions between distinct phase space…
The statistics of edge-localised plasma instabilities (ELMs) in toroidal magnetically confined fusion plasmas are considered. From first principles, standard experimentally motivated assumptions are shown to determine a specific probability distribution for the waiting times between ELMs: the Weibull distribution. This is confirmed empirically by a statistically rigorous comparison with a large data set from the Joint European Torus (JET). The successful characterisation of ELM waiting times enables future work to progress in various ways. Here we present a quantitative classification of ELM t…
Shallow fuelling pellets are injected from the high field side into plasmas in which ELMs have been mitigated using external magnetic perturbation coils. The data are compared with ideal assumptions in the ITER fuelling model, namely that mitigated ELMs are not affected by fuelling pellets. Firstly it is shown that during the pellet evaporation an ELM is triggered, during which the amount particle loss could be larger (factor ~1.5) than the particle loss during an ELM which was not induced by pellet. Secondly, a favourable example is shown in which post-pellet particle losses due to mitigated …
Resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP) have extensively been demonstrated as a plausible technique for mitigating or suppressing large edge localized modes (ELMs). Associated with this is a substantial amount of theory and modelling efforts during recent years. Various models describing the plasma response to the RMP fields have been proposed in the literature, and are briefly reviewed in this work. Despite their simplicity, linear response models can provide alternative criteria, than the vacuum field based criteria, for guiding the choice of the coil configurations to achieve the best control…
Degradation of first wall materials due to plasma disturbances severely limit both the lifetime and longevity of fusion reactors. Among the various kinds of disturbances, type I edge localized modes (ELMs) in particular present significant design challenges due to their expected heat loading and relative frequency in next step fusion reactors. Plasma gun devices have been used extensively to replicate ELM conditions in the laboratory, however feature higher density, lower temperatures, and thus higher flow collisionality than those expected in fusion conditions. This work presents experimental…
Toroidal flow alone is generally thought to have important influence on tokamak edge pedestal stability, even though theory analysis often predicts merely a weak stabilizing effect of toroidal flow on the edge localized modes (ELMs) in experimental parameter regimes. For the first time, we find from two-fluid MHD calculations that such a stabilization, however, can be significantly enhanced by increasing the edge plasma density. Our finding resolves a long-standing mystery whether or how toroidal rotation can indeed have effective influence on ELMs, and explains why the ELM mitigation and supp…

A unique experiment in the Joint European Torus (JET) consecutively produced 120 almost identical plasma pulses, providing two orders of magnitude more data than is usually available. This allows the statistical detection of previously unobservable phenomena such as a sequence of resonant-like waiting times between edge-localised instabilities (ELMs). Here we investigate the causes of this phenomenon. By synchronising data to the 1000s of ELM times and averaging the results, random errors are reduced by a factor of 50, allowing unprecedentedly detailed behaviour to be described. A clear link c…
Injecting frozen deuterium pellets into an ELMy H-mode plasma is a well established scheme for triggering edge localized modes (ELMs) before they naturally occur. Based on an ASDEX Upgrade H-mode plasma, this article presents a comparison of extended MHD simulations of spontaneous type-I ELMs and pellet-triggered ELMs allowing to study their non-linear dynamics in detail. In particular, pellet-triggered ELMs are simulated by injecting deuterium pellets into different time points during the pedestal build-up described in [A. Cathey et al. Nuclear Fusion 60, 124007 (2020)]. Realistic ExB and dia…
Access conditions for full suppression of Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) by Magnetic Perturbations (MP) in low density high confinement mode (H-mode) plasmas are studied in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The main empirical requirements for full ELM suppression in our experiments are: 1. The poloidal spectrum of the MP must be aligned for best plasma response from weakly stable kink-modes, which amplify the perturbation, 2. The plasma edge density must be below a critical value, $3.3 \times 10^{19}$~m$^{-3}$. The edge collisionality is in the range $ν^*_i = 0.15-0.42$ (ions) and $ν^*_e = 0.15-0.25$ (e…
Using the orbit-following code ASCOT, we model alpha particle transport in ITER under the influence of ELM control coils (ECCs), toroidal field ripple, and test blanket modules, with emphasis on how the plasma response (PR) modifies the transport mechanisms and fast ion loads on the divertor. We found that while PR shields the plasma by healing broken flux surfaces, it also opens a new loss channel for marginally trapped particles: PR causes strong toroidal variation of the poloidal field near the X-point which leads to de-localisation of banana tips and collisionless transport. The reduction …
Edge localised modes (ELMs) are a concern for future devices as they can limit the operational lifetime of the divertor. The mitigation of ELMs can be performed by the application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) which act to degrade the pressure gradient in the edge of the plasma. Investigations of the effect of RMPs on MAST have been performed in a range of plasmas using perturbations with toroidal mode numbers of n=3, 4 and 6. It has been seen that the RMPs increase the ELM frequency, which gives rise to a corresponding decrease in the ELM energy. The reduced ELM energy decreases t…
An analytic theory of edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in an H-mode tokamak plasma via the application of a static, externally generated, resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) is presented. This theory is based on the plausible hypothesis that mode penetration at the top of the pedestal is a necessary and sufficient condition for the RMP-induced suppression of ELMs. The theory also makes use of a number of key insights gained in a recent publication (Fitzpatrick R 2019). The first insight is that the response of the plasma to a particular helical component of the RMP, in the immediate vici…
This paper reports the impact on confinement and power load of the high-shape 2.5MA ELMy H-mode scenario at JET of a change from an all carbon plasma facing components to an all metal wall. In preparation to this change, systematic studies of power load reduction and impact on confinement as a result of fuelling in combination with nitrogen seeding were carried out in JET-C and are compared to their counterpart in JET with a metallic wall. An unexpected and significant change is reported on the decrease of the pedestal confinement but is partially recovered with the injection of nitrogen.
Magnetically confined plasmas are often subject to relaxation oscillations accompanied by large transport events. This is particularly the case for the high confinement regime of tokamaks where these events are termed edge localized modes (ELMs). They result in the temporary breakdown of the high confinement and lead to high power loads on plasma facing components. Present theories of ELM generation rely on a combined effect of edge currents and the edge pressure gradient exceeding critical values which result in intermediate mode number ($n \cong 10-15$) structures (\emph{filaments}) localize…
Sustained ELM mitigation has been achieved on MAST and AUG using RMPs with a range of toroidal mode numbers over a wide region of low to medium collisionality discharges. The ELM energy loss and peak heat loads at the divertor targets have been reduced. The ELM mitigation phase is typically associated with a drop in plasma density and overall stored energy. In one particular scenario on MAST, by carefully adjusting the fuelling it has been possible to counteract the drop in density and to produce plasmas with mitigated ELMs, reduced peak divertor heat flux and with minimal degradation in pedes…
We present that a statistical method known as the Complexity-Entropy analysis is useful to characterize a state of plasma turbulence and flux in the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) edge localized mode (ELM) control experiment. The RMP ELM suppression phase with the stochastic pedestal top temperature fluctuation can be distinguished from the natural ELM free phase with the chaotic fluctuation. It is discussed that the stochastic temperature fluctuation localized near the pedestal top can be originated from the narrow layer of the field penetration near the pedestal top. The forced magneti…
New plasma regimes with high confinement, low core impurity accumulation and small Edge localized mode (ELMs) perturbations have been obtained close to ITER conditions in magnetically confined plasmas from the Joint European torus (JET) tokamak. Such regimes are achieved by means of optimized particle fuelling conditions which trigger a self-organize state with a strong increase in rotation and ion temperature and a decrease of the edge density. An interplay between core and edge plasma regions leads to reduced turbulence levels and outward impurity convection. These results pave the way to an…
Plasma equilibria reconstructed from the Mega-Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) have sufficient resolution to capture plasma evolution during the short period between edge-localized modes (ELMs). Immediately after the ELM steep gradients in pressure, P, and density, ne, form pedestals close to the separatrix, and they then expand into the core. Local gyrokinetic analysis over the ELM cycle reveals the dominant microinstabilities at perpendicular wavelengths of the order of the ion Larmor radius. These are kinetic ballooning modes (KBMs) in the pedestal and microtearing modes (MTMs) in the core clos…

Edge-Localized-Mode (ELM) suppression by resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) generally occurs over very narrow ranges of the plasma current (or magnetic safety factor q95) in the DIII-D tokamak. However, wide q95 ranges of ELM suppression are needed for the safety and operational flexibility of ITER and future reactors. In DIII-D ITER Similar Shape (ISS) plasmas with n=3 RMPs, the range of q95 for ELM suppression is found to increase with decreasing electron density. Nonlinear two-fluid MHD simulations reproduce the observed q95 windows of ELM suppression and the dependence on plasma densit…
We modify the Chapman sandpile model (Chapman \textit{et al} \textit{Physical Review Letters} 86, 2814 (2001)) to form comparisons with pellet pacing, which is used to reduce or eliminate ELMs in a fusion plasma. We employ a variation of that model in which a pedestal with feedback is introduced (Bowie and Hole \textit{Phys. Plasmas} 25, 012511 (2018)), which we further modify to provide for dual fuelling - sand is added both at the centre of the sandpile, and near the edge. We observe that when the additional sand is added at the top of the pedestal, MLEs are largely suppressed. While this su…
An electrostatic gyrokinetic-based model is applied to simulate parallel plasma transport in the scrape-off layer to a divertor plate. The authors focus on a test problem that has been studied previously, using parameters chosen to model a heat pulse driven by an edge-localized mode (ELM) in JET. Previous work has used direct particle-in-cell equations with full dynamics, or Vlasov or fluid equations with only parallel dynamics. With the use of the gyrokinetic quasineutrality equation and logical sheath boundary conditions, spatial and temporal resolution requirements are no longer set by the …
The interaction between Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) and Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) is modeled with the magnetohydrodynamic code JOREK using experimental parameters from ASDEX Upgrade discharges. The ELM mitigation or suppression is optimal when the amplification of both tearing and peeling-kink responses result in a better RMP penetration. The ELM mitigation or suppression is not only due to the reduction of the pressure gradient, but predominantly arises from the toroidal coupling between the ELMs and the RMP-induced mode at the plasma edge, forcing the edge modes to saturate at a…
Several analysis methods for nonstationary fluctuations are described and applied to the edge localized mode (ELM) instabilities of limiter H-mode plasmas. The microwave scattering diagnostic observes poloidal $k_θ$ values of 3.3 cm$^{-1}$, averaged over a 20 cm region at the plasma edge.A short autoregressive filter enhances the nonstationary component of the plasma fluctuations by removing much of the background level of stationary fluctuations. Between ELMs, the spectrum predominantly consists of broad-banded 300-700 kHz fluctuations propagating in the electron diamagnetic drift direction, …
The application of non-axisymmetric resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with a toroidal mode number n=6 in the MAST tokamak produces a significant reduction in plasma energy loss associated with type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs), the first such observation with n>3. During the ELM mitigated stage clear lobe structures are observed in visible-light imaging of the X-point region. These lobes or manifold structures, that were predicted previously, have been observed for the first time in a range of discharges and their appearance is correlated with the effect of RMPs on the plasma i.e. they o…
The pedestal profile measurements in high triangularity JET plasmas show that with low fuelling the pedestal width decreases during the ELM cycle and with high fuelling it stays constant. In the low fuelling case the pedestal pressure gradient keeps increasing until the ELM crash and in the high fuelling case it initially increases then saturates during the ELM cycle. Stability analysis reveals that both JET plasmas become unstable to finite-n ideal MHD peeling-ballooning modes at the end of the ELM cycle. During the ELM cycle, infinite-n ideal MHD ballooning modes and kinetic ballooning modes…

Ion cyclotron emission (ICE) is detected during edge localised modes (ELMs) in the KSTAR tokamak at harmonics of the proton cyclotron frequency in the outer plasma edge. The emission typically chirps downward (occasionally upward) during ELM crashes, and is driven by confined 3MeV fusion-born protons that have large drift excursions from the plasma core. We exploit fully kinetic simulations at multiple plasma densities to match the time-evolving features of the chirping ICE. This yields a unique, very high time resolution diagnostic of the collapsing edge pedestal density.
The complete refuelling of the plasma density loss (pump-out) caused by mitigation of Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) is demonstrated on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The plasma is refuelled by injection of frozen deuterium pellets and ELMs are mitigated by external resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). In this experiment relevant dimensionless parameters, such as relative pellet size, relative RMP amplitude and pedestal collisionality are kept at the ITER like values. Refuelling of density pump out requires a factor of two increase of nominal fuelling rate. Energy confinement and pedestal temperat…
Type-I Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) have been mitigated in MAST through the application of n = 3, 4 and 6 resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). For each toroidal mode number of the non-axisymmetric applied fields, the frequency of the ELMs has been increased significantly, and the peak heat flux on the divertor plates reduced commensurately. This increase in ELM frequency occurs despite a significant drop in the edge pressure gradient, which would be expected to stabilise the peeling-ballooning modes thought to be responsible for type-I ELMs. Various mechanisms which could cause a destabilisa…
During a tokamak discharge, the plasma can vary between different confinement regimes: Low (L), High (H) and, in some cases, a temporary (intermediate state), called Dithering (D). In addition, while the plasma is in H mode, Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) can occur. The automatic detection of changes between these states, and of ELMs, is important for tokamak operation. Motivated by this, and by recent developments in Deep Learning (DL), we developed and compared two methods for automatic detection of the occurrence of L-D-H transitions and ELMs, applied on data from the TCV tokamak. These method…
The peak pressure gradient in the pedestal (dPe/dψ) on MAST varies little between edge localized modes (ELMs), although it varies between discharges due factors such as gas fuelling and plasma current. The pressure pedestal width in flux space on the high-field side (HFS), both during the inter-ELM period and amongst different plasma discharges is consistent with a scaling of . In flux space very similar dPe/dψ and Δpe are observed on the HFS and low-field side (LFS) in single null configuration. This symmetry is broken by the application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). During ELM m…
Solutions to a model 2D eigenmode equation describing micro-instabilities in tokamak plasmas are presented that demonstrate a sensitivity of the mode structure and stability to plasma profiles. In narrow regions of parameter space, with special plasma profiles, a maximally unstable mode is found that balloons on the outboard side of the tokamak. This corresponds to the conventional picture of a ballooning mode. However, for most profiles this mode cannot exist and instead a more stable mode is found that balloons closer to the top or bottom of the plasma. Good quantitative agreement with a 1D …
Long-lived, highly localized structures called palm tree modes (PTM) are observed in the edge plasma of the JET tokamak. Although PTMs are well documented, little is known about the mechanisms which produce these structures. In the case of the PTM, an ELM-postcursor, its genesis is usually explained by ergodisation of the magnetic field due to edge localized modes and the appearance of a seed magnetic island which evolves into a PTM later. In this study we try to invoke a creation mechanism based on the concepts and observations in edge plasma turbulence. An interesting aspect of plasma turbul…
Edge localised modes (ELMs) allow maintaining sufficient purity of tokamak H-mode plasmas and thus enable stationary H-mode. On the other hand in a future device ELMs may cause divertor power flux densities far in excess of tolerable material limits. The size of the energy loss per ELM is determined by saturation effects in the non-linear phase of the ELM, which at present is hardly understood. Solitary magnetic perturbations (SMPs) are identified as dominant features in the radial magnetic fluctuations below 100kHz. They are typically observed close (+-0.1ms) to the onset of pedestal erosion.…
The confinement of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) particles in the presence of n=3 Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) in 15 MA ITER DT plasmas has been studied using full orbit ASCOT simulations. Realistic NBI distribution functions, and 3D wall and equilibria, including the plasma response to the externally applied 3D fields calculated with MARS-F, have been employed. The observed total fast-ion losses depend on the poloidal spectra of the applied n=3 RMP as well as on the absolute toroidal phase of the applied perturbation with respect to the NBI birth distribution. The absolute toroidal p…
