We employed two independent methods to study possible damage to the scintillation mechanism in lead tungstate crystals due to irradiation by a 34 GeV pion beam. First, 10 crystals were irradiated simultaneously over 30 hours by a narrow beam, so that only a small region of each crystal was affected. We studied the effect of the irradiation on the light output non-uniformity. If a localized degradation was observed, it would indicate damage to the scintillation mechanism. Secondly, we detected light output using two phototubes attached to sides of a crystal. Since these phototubes detect scintillation light only from a small localized region, the effect of transmission loss should be minimal. We did not see any statistically significant evidence for scintillation mechanism damage with either method. The effect is consistent with zero, and the upper limit is 0.5% at 95% C.L.
Eight PbWO4 crystals produced for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at LHC have been irradiated in a 20 GeV/c proton beam up to fluences of 5.4 E13 p/cm2. The damage recovery in these crystals, stored in the dark at room temperature, has been followed for over a year. Comparative irradiations with 60Co photons have been performed on seven other crystals using a dose rate of 1 kGy/h. The issue whether hadrons cause a specific damage to the scintillation mechanism has been studied through light output measurements on the irradiated crystals using cosmic rays. The correlation …
In this paper, we report on the study of the optical properties of YAG:Ce and GGG:Ce garnet crystals after irradiation in a 660~MeV proton beam with a fluence up to 8.9$\times$10$^{14}$ protons/cm$^2$. We found that the transparency of both crystals fell by no more than 7\% in the region of their own luminescence. The light yield of a YAG:Ce sample, measured one year after irradiation, dropped by about 35\%.
This paper presents the results of the fast neutron irradiation (E$_n$ > 0.5MeV) of an EJ-276 scintillator performed in the MARIA research reactor with fluence up to 5.3$\times$10$^{15}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, four samples with size $ϕ$25.4~mm$\times$5~mm were tested. The changes in the light yield, emission and absorption spectrum and neutron/gamma discrimination using PuBe source before and after irradiation are presented. The figure of merit in neutron/gamma discrimination based on the charge integration method for different neutron fluences and different short gate integration time…
Studies of the radiation hardness of lead tungstate crystals produced by the Bogoroditsk Techno-Chemical Plant in Russia and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics in China have been carried out at IHEP, Protvino. The crystals were irradiated by a 40-GeV pion beam. After full recovery, the same crystals were irradiated using a $^{137}Cs$ $γ$-ray source. The dose rate profiles along the crystal length were observed to be quite similar. We compare the effects of the two types of radiation on the crystals light output.
This paper is devoted to the study of a degradation of CsI(Tl)crystals scintillation characteristics under irradiation with gamma-quanta at the uniformly distributed absorbed dose up to 3700 rad. The sample set consisted of 25 crystals of 30 cm long having a truncated pyramid shape and 30 rectangular crystals of the same length. A large difference in the light output deterioration caused by the radiation was observed for the samples of the same shape. A substantial dependence of the average light output loss from the sample shape is seen as well. On the other hand, the crystals from the same i…
The light collection of the extruded scintillator strip samples with WLS fibers placed in the longitudinal hole in the plates was measured. The holes were filled with various liquid fillers. Measurements were carried out under irradiation by cosmic muons. The method of pumping liquid filler with viscosity more than 10 Pa*s in the strip hole with WLS fiber inside was designed and successfully tested.
The report contains various aspects of radiation damage in silicon detectors subjected to high intensity hadron and electromagnetic irradiation. It focuses on improvements for the foreseen LHC applications, employing oxygenation of silicon wafers during detector processing (result from CERN-RD48). An updated survey on hadron induced damage is given in the first article. Several improvements are outlined especially with respect to antiannealing problems associated with detector storage during LHC maintenance periods. Open questions are outlined in the final section, among which are a full under…
We have investigated the effects caused by proton-induced radiation damage on Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), a pixelized photon detector developed by Hamamatsu Photonics. The leakage current of irradiated MPPC samples linearly increases with total irradiated doses due to radiation damage, which is not completely recovered even after a year from the irradiation. No significant change has been observed in the gains at least up to 8.0 Gy ($9.1\times10^7$ n/mm$^2$ in 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluence, $Φ_{\rm eq}$). The device has completely lost its photon-counting capability due to baseline f…
Radiation damage in lead tungstate crystals reduces their transparency. The calibration that relates the amount of light detected in such crystals to incident energy of photons or electrons is of paramount importance to maintaining the energy resolution the detection system. We report on tests of lead tungstate crystals, read out by photomultiplier tubes, exposed to irradiation by monoenergetic electron or pion beams. The beam electrons themselves were used to measure the scintillation light output, and a blue light emitting diode (LED) was used to track variations of crystals transparency. We…
We report precise TCAD simulations of IHEP-IME-v1 Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) calibrated by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Our setup allows us to evaluate the leakage current, capacitance, and breakdown voltage of LGAD, which agree with measurements' results before irradiation. And we propose an improved LGAD Radiation Damage Model (LRDM) which combines local acceptor removal with global deep energy levels. The LRDM is applied to the IHEP-IME-v1 LGAD and able to predict the leakage current well at -30 $^{\circ}$C after an irradiation fluence of $ Φ_{eq}=2.5 \times 10^{15} ~n_{eq}/…
This paper presents the results of neutron flux measurements at two irradiation facilities of the TRIGA Mark II reactor at ENEA Casaccia Research Center, Italy. The goal of these measurements is to provide a complete characterization of neutron irradiation facilities for accurate and precise dose evaluation in radiation damage tests and, more generally, for all applications that need a good knowledge of neutron flux in terms of intensity, energy spectrum and spatial distribution. The neutron activation technique is used to measure the activation rates of several reactions, chosen so to cover t…
Kinetics of radiation damage of the PWO crystals under irradiation and recovery were studied. Crystals were irradiated with dose corresponding to average one expected in the electromagnetic calorimeter (working dose irradiation). Radiation damage and recovery were monitored through measurements of PWO optical transmission. An approach is proposed which allows evaluating the influence of the PWO crystals properties on the statistical term in the energy resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The analysis also gives important information about the nature of the radiation damage mechanism …
We report on the effects of ionizing radiation on 65nm CMOS transistors held at approximately -20C during irradiation. The pattern of damage observed after a total dose of 1 Grad is similar to damage reported in room temperature exposures, but we observe less damage than was observed at room temperature.
For the high-luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), at the expected position of the innermost pixel detector layer of the CMS and ATLAS experiments, the estimated equivalent neutron fluence after 3000 fb$^{-1}$ is 2$\cdot$10$^{16}$ n$_{eq}$/cm$^2$, and the IEL (Ionizing Energy Loss) dose in the SiO$_2$ 12 MGy. The optimisation of the pixel sensors and the understanding of their performance as a function of fluence and dose makes a radiation damage model for TCAD simulations, which describes the available experimental data, highly desirable. The currently available bulk-damage …
This work focuses on the investigation of radiation induced defects responsible for the degradation of silicon detectors. Comparative studies of the defects induced by irradiation with 60Co- rays, 6 and 15 MeV electrons, 23 GeV protons and 1 MeV equivalent reactor neutrons revealed the existence of point defects and cluster related centers having a strong impact on damage properties of Si diodes. The detailed relation between the microscopic reasons as based on defect analysis and their macroscopic consequences for detector performance are presented. In particular, it is shown that the changes…
We present here a comprehensive study of the light yield of primary and secondary scintillations produced in gaseous and liquid Ar in the near infrared (NIR) and visible region, at cryogenic temperatures. The measurements were performed using Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (GAPDs) and pulsed X-ray irradiation. The primary scintillation yield of the fast emission component in gaseous Ar was found to be independent of temperature in the range of 87-160 K; it amounted to 17000+/-3000 photon/MeV in the NIR in the range of 690-1000 nm. In liquid Ar at 87 K, the primary scintillation yield of the…
We are investigating adaption of SOI pixel devices for future high energy physic(HEP) experiments. The pixel sensors are required to be operational in very severe radiation environment. Most challenging issue in the adoption is the TID (total ionizing dose) damage where holes trapped in oxide layers affect the operation of nearby transistors. We have introduced a second SOI layer - SOI2 beneath the BOX (Buried OXide) layer - in order to compensate for the TID effect by applying a negative voltage to this electrode to cancel the effect caused by accumulated positive holes. In this paper, the TI…
Scintillation light from gamma ray irradiation in liquid xenon is detected by two Hamamatsu R9288 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) immersed in the liquid. UV light reflector material, PTFE, is used to optimize the light collection efficiency. The detector gives a high light yield of 6 photoelectron per keV (pe/keV), which allows efficient detection of the 122 keV gamma-ray line from Co-57, with a measured energy resolution of (8.8+/-0.6)% (sigma). The best achievable energy resolution, by removing the instrumental fluctuations, from liquid xenon scintillation light is estimated to be around 6-8% (…
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have become popular light conversion devices in recent years due to their low bias voltage and sensitivity to wavelengths emitted from common scintillating materials. These properties make them particularly attractive for resource-constrained missions such as space-based detector applications. However the space radiation environment is known to be particularly harsh on semiconductor devices, where high particle fluences can degrade performance over time. The radiation hardness of a particular SiPM, manufactured by ON Semiconductor (formally SensL), has yet to b…
A lot of R & D work is carried out in the CERN RD50 Collaboration to find out the best material for the Si detectors that can be used in the harsh radiation environment of HL-LHC, n and p-MCz Si was identified as one of the prime candidates as a material for strip detector that can be chosen the phase 2 upgrade plan of the new Compact Muon Solenoid tracker detector in 2026. For the very first time, in this work, an advanced four level deep-trap mixed irradiation model for p-MCz Si is proposed by the comparison of experimental data on the full depletion voltage and leakage current to the Shockl…
A Cerium Fluoride crystal produced during early R&D studies for calorimetry at the CERN Large Hadron Collider was exposed to a 24 GeV/c proton fluence Phi_p=(2.78 +- 0.20) x 10EE13 cm-2 and, after one year of measurements tracking its recovery, to a fluence Phi_p=(2.12 +- 0.15) x 10EE14 cm-2. Results on proton-induced damage to the crystal and its spontaneous recovery after both irradiations are presented here, along with some new, complementary data on proton-damage in Lead Tungstate. A comparison with FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation results is performed and a qualitative understanding of high-e…
Scintillating LFS-3 and LFS-8 crystals were exposed to a 155 MeV/c proton fluence $Φ_{p}=(4.4\pm0.4)\cdot10^{12}cm^{-2}$. There was negligible reduction in transmission spectrum of LFS-3 crystal measured in 30 days after irradiation.
The Displacement per Atom (DPA) rate is conventionally computed with DPA cross sections in reactor applications. The method of direct calculation with energy-angular distributions given in the Center of Mass (CM) frame is proposed and recommended in the present work. The methods for refining and verifying the calculations of DPA cross sections are proposed: (i) Gauss-Legendre-Quadrature-based Piecewise Integration (GLQPI) for ensuring the numeric convergence of integral over emission angle due to the discontinuity of integrand; (ii) verification of the convergence for trapezoidal integration o…

Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPM) are becoming the photo-detector of choice for increasingly more particle detection applications, from fundamental physics to medical and societal applications. One major consideration for their use at high-luminosity colliders is the radiation damage induced by hadrons, which leads to a dramatic increase of the dark count rate. KETEK SiPMs have been exposed to various fluences of reactor neutrons up to $Φ_{neq}$ = 5$\times$10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ (1 MeV equivalent neutrons). Results from the I-V, and C-V measurements for temperatures between $-$30$^\circ$C and $+$3…
The ATLAS Insertable B-Layer (IBL) detector was installed into the ATLAS experiment in 2014 and has been in operation since 2015. During the first year of IBL data taking an increase of the low voltage currents associated with the FE-I4 front-end chip was observed and this increase was traced back to the radiation damage in the chip. The dependence of the current on the total-ionising dose and temperature has been tested with X-ray and proton irradiations and will be presented in this paper together with the detector operation guidelines.

Eight production quality PbWO4 crystals of CMS have been irradiated in a 20 GeV/c proton beam up to fluences of 5.4E13cm-2. The damage recovery in these crystals has been followed for over a year. Comparative irradiations with 60Co photons have been performed on seven other crystals using a dose rate of 1 kGy/h. In proton irradiated crystals the light transmission band-edge shifts and the induced absorption length is proportional to the inverse of the 4th power of the wavelength. In gamma-irradiated crystals the band-edge does not shift but formation of absorption bands is seen clearly. The ab…
The investigation of the degradation effects on triple-junction (TJ) solar cells, operating in space environment, is of primary importance in view of future space missions towards harsh radiation orbits (e.g. MEO with high particle irradiation intensity) and for the new spacecraft based on electrical propulsion. In the present work, we report the experimental results obtained from the irradiation test campaign carried out both on (InGaP/GaAs/Ge) TJ solar cells and on single junction (SJ) isotype sub-cells (i.e. InGaP top cells, GaAs middle cells and Ge bottom cells). In particular, the electri…
In low earth orbit, there are many cosmic rays composed primarily of high energy protons. These cosmic rays cause surface and bulk radiation effects, resulting in degradation of detector performance. Quantitative evaluation of radiation hardness is essential in development of X-ray detectors for astronomical satellites. We performed proton irradiation experiments on newly developed X-ray detectors called XRPIX based on silicon-on-insulator technology at HIMAC in National Institute of Radiological Sciences. We irradiated 6 MeV protons with a total dose of 0.5 krad, equivalent to 6 years irradia…
A Lead Tungstate crystal produced for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at the LHC was cut into three equal-length sections. The central one was irradiated with 290 MeV/c positive pions up to a fluence of (5.67 +- 0.46)x10^13 /cm^2, while the other two were exposed to a 24 GeV/c proton fluence of (1.17 +- 0.11) x 10^13/ cm^2. The damage recovery in these crystals, stored in the dark at room temperature, has been followed over two years. The comparison of the radiation-induced changes in light transmission for these crystals shows that damage is proportional to the star dens…
In view of the safe operation of the quadrupoles in the luminosity upgrade of the LHC accelerator, the response of the copper stabilizer at low temperatures to the various high energy radiation sources is of primary importance. The present study takes into account the expected high energy spectrum of the simultaneous radiation by neutrons, protons, pions, electrons and photons, calculated using the FLUKA code by F. Cerutti (CERN) as well as on literature values. It was found that proton irradiation causes a considerably higher damage than neutron irradiation: in spite of a 3.8% proton fraction…
