The constraint of incompressibility is often used to simplify the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) description of linearized plasma dynamics because it does not affect the ideal MHD marginal stability point. In this paper two methods for introducing incompressibility are compared in a cylindrical plasma model: In the first method, the limit $γ\to \infty$ is taken, where $γ$ is the ratio of specific heats; in the second, an anisotropic mass tensor $\mathbfρ$ is used, with the component parallel to the magnetic field taken to vanish, $ρ_{\parallel} \to 0$. Use of resistive MHD reveals the nature of these two limits because the Alfvén and slow magnetosonic continua of ideal MHD are converted to point spectra and moved into the complex plane. Both limits profoundly change the slow-magnetosonic spectrum, but only the second limit faithfully reproduces the resistive Alfvén spectrum and its wavemodes. In ideal MHD, the slow magnetosonic continuum degenerates to the Alfvén continuum in the first method, while it is moved to infinity by the second. The degeneracy in the first is broken by finite resistivity. For numerical and semi-analytical study of these models, we choose plasma equilibria which cast light on puzzling aspects of results found in earlier literature.
A general stability condition for plasma-vacuum systems with resistive walls is derived by using the Frieman Rotenberg lagrangian stability formulation [Rev. Mod. Phys. 32, 898 (1960)]. It is shown that the Lyapunov stability limit for external modes does not depend upon the gyroscopic term but upon the sign of the perturbed potential energy only. In the absence of dissipation in the plasma such as viscosity, it is expected that the flow cannot stabilize the system.
Feedback stabilization of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes is studied in a cylindrical model for a tokamak with resistivity, viscosity and toroidal rotation. The control is based on a linear combination of the normal and tangential components of the magnetic field just inside the resistive wall. The feedback includes complex gain, for both the normal and for the tangential components, and the imaginary part of the feedback for the former is equivalent to plasma rotation. The work includes (1) analysis with a reduced resistive MHD model for a tokamak with finite βand with stepfunction current de…
The study of hot plasma expansion in a magnetic field is of interest for many laboratory and astrophysical applications. In this paper, an exactly solvable analytical model is proposed for an expanding resistive plasma in an external magnetic field in the regime in which the magnetic field does not perturb the plasma motion. The model is based on a class of exact solutions for the purely radial expansion of the plasma in the absence of a magnetic field. This approximation permits the reduction of the electromagnetic problem to consideration of a diffusion equation for the magnetic field. Expli…
In this work, a quasi-linear model for plasma flow response to the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in a tokamak has been rigorously developed in the resistive-inertial (RI) and viscous-resistive (VR) regimes purely from the two-field reduced MHD model. Models for plasma response to RMP are commonly composed of equations for the resonant magnetic field response (i.e. the magnetic island) and the torque balance of plasma flow. However, in previous plasma response models, the magnetic island and the torque balance equations are often derived separately from reduced MHD and full MHD equations…
A new class of static magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) magnetic island bifurcations is identified in rotating spherical tokamak plasmas during single- and two-fluid resistive MHD simulations. As the magnitude of an externally applied non-axisymmetric magnetic field perturbation is increased in these simulations, the internal flux surfaces that make up a sub-set of the resonant helical magnetic islands in the plasma gradually elongate and undergo heteroclinic bifurcations. The bifurcation results in the creation of a new set of hyperbolic-elliptic fixed points as predicted by the Poincaré-Birkoff fixe…
First direct experimental evidence of high frequency, high toroidal mode number (n>20), magnetic fluctuations due to unstable resistive interchange modes (g-modes) resonant in the edge region of a reversed field pinch (RFP) plasma is presented. Experimental characterization of time and space periodicities of the modes is provided by means of highly resolved in-vessel edge and insertable magnetic diagnostics. It is found that the spectral mode properties are in good agreement with the predictions of the theoretical linear resistive magnetohydrodynamic stability analysis. A simple model is propo…
Along with crossed electric and magnetic fields in a Hall thruster, a radial component of electric field is generated that takes ions toward the walls, which causes sputtering and produces dust contamination in the thruster plasma. Considering negatively charged dust particles in the Hall thruster, we approach analytically the resistive instability by taking into account the oscillations of dust particles, ions and electrons along with finite temperatures of ions and electrons. In typical Hall thruster regimes, the resistive instability growth rate increases with higher collision rates in the …
A model system of equations has been derived to describe a toroidally rotating tokamak plasma, unstable to Resistive Wall Modes (RWMs) and metastable to Neoclassical Tearing Modes (NTMs), using a linear RWM model and a nonlinear NTM model. If no wall is present, the NTM growth shows the typical threshold/saturation island widths, whereas a linearly unstable kink mode grows exponentially in this model plasma system. When a resistive wall is present, the growth of the linearly unstable RWM is accelerated by an unstable island: a form of coupled RWM-NTM mode. Crucially, this coupled system has no…
We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in resistive pair plasmas using a onefluid theory derived from the relativistic two-fluid equations. When the resistivity normalized by the electron/positron inertia variable exceeds a critical value, the dispersion relation for electromagnetic waves shows that the group velocity is larger than the light speed in vacuum. However, in such a case, it also is found that the plasma parameter is less than unity: that is, the electron-positron pair medium no longer can be treated as plasma. Thus the simple two-fluid approximation is invalid. Th…
A method for solving model nonlinear equations describing plasma oscillations in the presence of viscosity and resistivity is given. By first going to the Lagrangian variables and then transforming the space variable conveniently, the solution in parametric form is obtained. It involves simple elementary functions. Our solution includes all known exact solutions for an ideal cold plasma and a large class of new ones for a more realistic plasma. A new nonlinear effect is found of splitting of the largest density maximum, with a saddle point between the peaks so obtained. The method may sometime…
An analysis of axisymmetric equilibria with arbitrary incompressible flow and finite resistivity is presented. It is shown that with large aspect ratio approximation or vanishing poloidal current, a uniform conductivity profile is consistent with equilibrium flows. Also a comment made on coexistence of both toroidal and poloidal flows in an axisymmetric field-reversed configuration.
The non-linear interplay between the resistive wall mode (RWM) and the toroidal plasma flow is numerically investigated in a full toroidal geometry, by simultaneously solving the initial value problems for the n=1 RWM and the n=0 toroidal force balance equation. Here n is the toroidal mode number. The neoclassical toroidal viscous torque is identified as the major momentum sink that brakes the toroidal plasma flow during the non-linear evolution of the RWM. This holds for a mode that is initially either unstable or stable. For an initially stable RWM, the braking of the flow, and hence the eve…
In the commended paper it is claimed that the proves of the "Resitive-Wall-Mode theorem" by Pfirsch and Tasso [Nucl. Fusion \textbf{11}, 259 (1971)] and extensions of that theorem for time dependent wall resistivity and equilibrium plasma flow are not detailed and that there are limitations restricting their applicability. In response, we provide here pertinent detailed derivations showing that the proves of the above mentioned theorems are rigorous and complete, unlike the considerations in the commended paper which ignore the self adjointness of the operator $\nabla\times\nabla\times$ and th…
We numerically study the effects of varying electric conductivity and magnetic permeability of the bounding wall on a kinematic dynamo in a sphere for parameters relevant to Madison plasma dynamo experiment (MPDX). The dynamo is excited by a laminar, axisymmetric flow of von Karman type. The flow is obtained as a solution to the Navier-Stokes equation for an isothermal fluid with a velocity profile specified at the sphere's boundary. The properties of the wall are taken into account as thin-wall boundary conditions imposed on the magnetic field. It is found that an increase in the permeability…
New non-linear, spatially periodic, long wavelength electrostatic modes of an electron fluid oscillating against a motionless ion fluid (Langmuir waves) are given, with viscous and resistive effects included. The cold plasma approximation is adopted, which requires the wavelength to be sufficiently large. The pertinent requirement valid for large amplitude waves is determined. The general non-linear solution of the continuity and momentum transfer equations for the electron fluid along with Poisson's equation is obtained in simple parametric form. It is shown that in all typical hydrogen plasm…
It is shown that the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium states of an axisymmetric toroidal plasma with finite resistivity and flows parallel to the magnetic field are governed by a second-order partial differential equation for the poloidal magnetic flux function $ψ$ coupled with a Bernoulli type equation for the plasma density (which are identical in form to the corresponding ideal MHD equilibrium equations) along with the relation $Δ^\star ψ=V_c σ$. (Here, $Δ^\star$ is the Grad-Schlüter-Shafranov operator, $σ$ is the conductivity and $V_c$ is the constant toroidal-loop voltage divided by $2 π$)…
We give a criterion for the Chandrasekhar-Kendall-Woltjer-Taylor (CKWT) state in a resistive plasma. We find that the lowest momentum (longest wavelength) of the initial helicity amplitudes of magnetic fields are the key to the CKWT state which can be reached if one helicity is favored over the other. This indicates that the imbalance between two helicities at the lowest momentum or longest wavelength in the initial conditions is essential to the CKWT state. A few examples of initial conditions for helicity amplitudes are taken to support the above statement both analytically and numerically.
We present a scalable block preconditioning strategy for the trace system coming from the high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We construct the block preconditioner with a least squares commutator (BFBT) approximation for the inverse of the Schur complement that segregates out the pressure unknowns of the trace system. The remaining velocity, magnetic field, and Lagrange multiplier unknowns form a coupled nodal unknown block (the upper block), for which a system algebraic multigrid (AMG) is used for the approx…
The aim of the present study is to perform a theoretical analysis of different strategies to stabilize energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) in LHD plasma. We use a reduced MHD for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The hellically trapped EP component is introduced through a modification of the drift frequency to include their precessional drift. The stabilization trends of the 1/1 EIC observed experimentally with respect to the thermal plasma density and temperature are reproduced by the simulations, showing a reasonable…
It is proved that (a) the solutions of the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equation, which describe the equlibrium states of a cylindrical plasma with purely poloidal flow and arbitrary cross sectional shape [G. N. Throumoulopoulos and G. Pantis, Plasma Phys. and Contr. Fusion 38, 1817 (1996)] are also valid for incompressible equlibrium flows with the axial velocity component being a free surface quantity and (b) for the case of isothermal incompressible equilibria the magnetic surfaces have necessarily circular cross section.
The Hasegawa-Wakatani equations, coupling plasma density and electrostatic potential through an approximation to the physics of parallel electron motions, are a simple model that describes resistive drift wave turbulence. We present numerical analyses of bifurcation phenomena in the model that provide new insights into the interactions between turbulence and zonal flows in the tokamak plasma edge region. The simulation results show a regime where, after an initial transient, drift wave turbulence is suppressed through zonal flow generation. As a parameter controlling the strength of the turbul…
Tearing modes with real frequencies in the plasma frame (i.e. in addition to the Doppler shift due to $E\times B$ rotation) are of potential importance because of their effect on the locking process. In particular, it has recently been shown [J. M. Finn, A. J. Cole, and D. P. Brennan, Phys. Plasmas (Letters), 22:120701, 2015] that the Maxwell torque on the plasma in the presence of an applied error field is modified significantly for tearing modes having real frequencies near marginal stability. In addition, it is known [J. M. Finn and R. A. Gerwin, Phys. Plasmas, 3:2344, 1996] that resistive …
The equilibrium of a resistive axisymmetric plasma with purely toroidal flow surrounded by a conductor is investigated within the framework of the nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic theory. It is proved that a) the poloidal current density vanishes and b) apart from an idealized case the pressure profile should vanish on the plasma boundary. For the cases of isothermal magnetic surfaces, isentropic magnetic surfaces and magnetic surfaces with constant density, the equilibrium states obey to an elliptic partial differential equation for the poloidal magnetic flux function, which is identical in form…
It is found that the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium of an axisymmetric gravitating magnetically confined plasma with incompressible flows is governed by a second-order elliptic differential equation for the poloidal magnetic flux function containing five flux functions coupled with a Poisson equation for the gravitation potential, and an algebraic relation for the pressure. This set of equations is amenable to analytic solutions. As an application, the magnetic-dipole static axisymmetric equilibria with vanishing poloidal plasma currents derived recently by Krasheninnikov, Catto, and Ha…
We perform fully kinetic simulations of flows known to produce dynamo in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), considering scenarios with low Reynolds number and high magnetic Prandtl number, relevant for galaxy cluster scale fluctuation dynamos. We find that Landau damping on the electrons leads to a rapid decay of magnetic perturbations, impeding the dynamo. This collisionless damping process operates on spatial scales where electrons are nonmagnetized, reducing the range of scales where the magnetic field grows in high magnetic Prandtl number fluctuation dynamos. When electrons are not magnetized dow…
In this paper, we analyze the stability of a homogeneous self-gravitating plasma, having a non-zero resistivity. This study provides a generalization of the Jeans paradigm for determining the critical scale above which gravitational collapse is allowed. We start by discussing the stability of an ideal self-gravitating plasma embedded in a constant magnetic field. We outline the existence of an anisotropic feature of the gravitational collapse. In fact, while in the plane orthogonal to the magnetic field the Jeans length is enhanced by the contribution of the magnetic pressure, outside this pla…
Plasma rotation in connection to both zonal and mean (equilibrium) flows can play a role in the transitions to the advanced confinement regimes in tokamaks, as the L-H transition and the formation of Internal Transport Barriers. For incompressible rotation the equilibrium is governed by a generalized Grad-Shafranov (GGS) equation and a decoupled Bernoulli-type equation for the pressure. For parallel flow the GGS equation can be transformed to one identical in form with the usual GS equation. In the present study on the basis of the latter equation we have extended HELENA, an equilibrium fixed …
In magnetic configurations with two or three q=1 (with q being the safety factor) resonant surfaces in a tokamak plasma, resistive magnetohydrodynamic modes with poloidal mode numbers m much larger than 1 are found to be linearly unstable. It is found that these high-m double or triple tearing modes significantly enhance through nonlinear interactions, the growth of the m=1 mode. This may account for the sudden onset of the internal resistive kink, i.e., the fast sawtooth trigger. Based on the subsequent reconnection dynamics that can proceed without formation of the m=1 islands, it is propose…
The kinetic effects, due to the mode resonance with thermal particle drift motions in the reversed field pinch (RFP) plasmas, are numerically investigated for the stability of the resistive wall mode, using a non-perturbative MHD-kinetic hybrid formulation. The kinetic effects are generally found too weak to substantially change the mode growth rate, or the stability margin, re-enforcing the fact that the ideal MHD model is rather adequate for describing the RWM physics in RFP experiments.
The various plasma models - incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, compressible MHD model, incompressible Hall MHD model, compressible Hall MHD model, electron MHD model, compressible Hall MHD with electron inertia model - notwithstanding the diversity of the underlying physics, are shown to exhibit some common features in the Beltrami states like certain robustness with respect to the plasma compressibility effects (albeit in the barotropy assumption) and the {\it Bernoulli} condition. The Beltrami states for these models are deduced by minimizing the appropriate total energy while k…
The effect of radiative heat-loss function and finite ion Larmor radius (FLR) corrections on the thermal instability of infinite homogeneous viscous plasma has been investigated incorporating the effects of thermal conductivity and finite electrical resistivity for the formation of a molecular cloud. The general dispersion relation is derived using the normal mode analysis method with the help of relevant linearized perturbation equations of the problem. Furthermore the wave propagation along and perpendicular to the direction of external magnetic field has been discussed. Stability of the med…
In this paper we present a two-dimensional, time dependent, numerical simulation of a reconnection current layer in incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics with uniform resistivity in the limit of very large Lundquist numbers. We use realistic boundary conditions derived consistently from the outside magnetic field, and we also take into account the effect of the back pressure from flow into the the separatrix region. We find that within a few Alfven times the system evolves from an arbitrary initial state to a steady state consistent with the Sweet--Parker model, even if the initial sta…
A highly elongated plasma is desirable in order to increase plasma pressure and energy confinement to maximize fusion power output. However, there is a limit to the maximum achievable elongation which is set by vertical instabilities driven by the $n=0$ MHD mode. This limit can be increased by optimizing several parameters characterizing the plasma and the wall. The purpose of our study is to explore how and to what extent this can be done. Specifically, we extend many earlier calculations of the $n=0$ mode and numerically determine scaling relations for the maximum elongation as a function of…
The implementation of a resistive-wall extension to the non-linear MHD-code JOREK via a coupling to the vacuum-field code STARWALL is presented along with first applications and benchmark results. Also, non-linear saturation in the presence of a resistive wall is demonstrated. After completion of the ongoing verification process, this code extension will allow to perform non-linear simulations of MHD instabilities in the presence of three-dimensional resistive walls with holes for limited and X-point plasmas.
It is believed that plasma rotation can affect the transitions to the advanced confinement regimes in tokamaks. In addition, in order to achieve fusion temperatures modern tokamaks rely on auxiliary heating methods. These methods generate pressure anisotropy in the plasma. For incompressible rotation with pressure anisotropy the equilibrium is governed by a Generalized Grad-Shafranov (GGS) equation and a decoupled Bernoulli-type equation for the effective pressure, $\bar{p}=(p_\parallel+p_\perp)/2$, where $p_\parallel$ ($p_\perp$) is the pressure tensor element parallel (perpendicular) to the …
The strongly coupled dusty plasma has often been modelled by the Generalized Hydrodynamic (GHD) model used for representing visco-elastic fluid systems. The incompressible limit of the model which supports transverse shear wave mode is studied in detail. In particular dipole structures are observed to emit transverse shear waves in both the limits of sub and super - luminar propagation, where the structures move slower and faster than the phase velocity of the shear waves, respectively. In the sub - luminar limit the dipole gets engulfed within the shear waves emitted by itself, which then bac…

The aim of the present study is to analyze the saturation regime of the energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) in the LHD plasma. A set of non linear simulations are performed by the FAR3d code that uses a reduced MHD model for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The hellically trapped EP component is introduced through a modification of the averaged drift velocity operator to include their precessional drift. The non linear simulation results show similar 1/1 EIC saturation phases with respect to the experimental observati…
The STARWALL/CAS3D/OPTIM code package is a powerful tool to study the linear MHD stability of 3D, ideal equilibria in the presence of multiply-connected ideal and/or resistive conducting structures, and their feedback stabilization by external currents. Robust feedback stabilization of resistive wall modes can be modelled with the OPTIM code. Resistive MHD studies are possible combining STARWALL with the linear, resistive 2D CASTOR code as well as nonlinear MHD simulations combining STARWALL with the JOREK code. In the present paper, a detailed description of the STARWALL code is given and som…
Based on a 14-moment closure for non-resistive (general-) relativistic viscous plasmas, we describe a new numerical scheme that is able to handle all first-order dissipative effects (heat conduction, bulk and shear viscosities), as well the anisotropies induced by the presence of magnetic fields. The latter is parameterized in terms of a thermal gyrofrequency or, equivalently, a thermal Larmor radius and allows to correctly capture the thermal Hall effect. By solving an extended Israel-Stewart-like system for the dissipative quantities that enforces algebraic constraints via stiff-relaxation, …
We identify and discuss a family of azimuthally symmetric, incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic plasma equilibria with poloidal and toroidal flows in terms of solutions of the Generalized Grad Shafranov (GGS) equation. These solutions are derived by exploiting the incompressibility assumption, in order to rewrite the GGS equation in terms of a different dependent variable, and the continuous Lie symmetry properties of the resulting equation and in particular a special type of "weak" symmetries.
In the classical statement of the plasma-vacuum interface problem in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) one neglects the displacement current in the vacuum region that gives the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics for the vacuum magnetic field. For understanding the influence of the vacuum electric field on the evolution of a plasma-vacuum interface we do not neglect the displacement current and consider the full Maxwell equations in vacuum. For the case of an incompressible plasma flow, by constructing an Hadamard-type ill-posedness example for the constant coefficients linearized problem w…
The dynamics of large scale plasma instabilities can strongly be influenced by the mutual interaction with currents flowing in conducting vessel structures. Especially eddy currents caused by time-varying magnetic perturbations and halo currents flowing directly from the plasma into the walls are important. The relevance of a resistive wall model is directly evident for Resistive Wall Modes (RWMs) or Vertical Displacement Events (VDEs). However, also the linear and non-linear properties of most other large-scale instabilities may be influenced significantly by the interaction with currents in …
