The recombination rate for three identical bosons has been calculated to test the limits of its universal behavior. It has been obtained for several different collision energies and scattering lengths (a) up to 10^5 a.u., giving rates that vary over 15 orders of magnitude. We find that universal behavior is limited to the threshold region characterized by E lesssim hbar^2/(2mu_{12}a^2), where E is the total energy and mu_{12} is the two-body reduced mass. The analytically predicted infinite series of resonance peaks and interference minima is truncated to no more than three of each for typical experimental parameters.
We derive an analytic formula which describes the final bound state dependence in ultracold three-body recombination. Using an energy-dependent loss parameter, the recently observed broad resonance in an ultracold gas of $^{6}$Li atoms [T. B. Ottenstein {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 203202 (2008)l J. H. Huckans {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 165302 (2009)] is described quantitatively. We also provide an analytic and approximation for the three-body recombination rate which encapsulates the underlying physics of the universal three-body recombination process.
Three-body recombination of identical, spin-polarized fermionic atoms in the ultracold limit is investigated. The mechanisms for recombination are described in terms of the ``scattering volume'' $V_p$ in the framework of the adiabatic hyperspherical representation. We have calculated numerically the recombination rate $K_3$ as a function of $V_p$ and have found that $K_3$ scales as $|V_p|^{8/3}$ for small $|V_p|$. A comparison with experimental data is also presented.
We study three-body recombination in an optically trapped ultracold gas of cesium atoms with precise magnetic control of the s-wave scattering length a. At large positive values of a, we measure the dependence of the rate coefficient on a and confirm the theoretically predicted scaling proportional to a^4. Evidence of recombination heating indicates the formation of very weakly bound molecules in the last bound energy level.
We present the first measurements and simulations of recombination fluorescence in ultracold neutral plasmas. In contrast with previous work, experiment and simulation are in significant disagreement. Comparison with a recombination model suggests that the disagreement could be due to the high energy portion of the electron energy distribution or to large energy changes in electron/Rydberg scattering. Recombination fluorescence opens a new diagnostic window in ultracold plasmas because it probes the deeply-bound Rydberg levels, which depend critically on electron energetics.
The cross section of dipole-magnetic photodisintegration of the negative hydrogen ion has been calculated within the framework of an effective-range theory. The dipole-magnetic cross section of photodetachment within the very narrow range of energy near the process threshold dominates over the dipole-electric one. It has been shown that in ultracold hydrogen plasma at temperatures below kT=3.29.10-4 K the dipole-magnetic photo-recombination becomes a main mechanism of electron capture by hydrogen atoms.
Three-body recombination, an important collisional process in plasmas, increases dramatically at low electron temperatures, with an accepted scaling of T_e^-9/2. We measure three-body recombination in an ultracold neutral xenon plasma by detecting recombination-created Rydberg atoms using a microwave-ionization technique. With the accepted theory (expected to be applicable for weakly-coupled plasmas) and our measured rates we extract the plasma temperatures, which are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements early in the plasma lifetime. The resulting electron temperatures indicate t…
We use universality in two-body dipolar physics to study three-body recombination. We present results for the universal structure of weakly bound two-dipole states that depend only on the s-wave scattering length ($a$). We study threshold three-body recombination rates into weakly-bound dimer states as a function of the scattering length. A Fermi Golden rule analysis is used to estimate rates for different events mediated by the dipole-dipole interaction and a phenomenological contact interaction. The three-body recombination rate in the limit where $a\gg D$ contains terms which scale as $a^{4…
We report on measurements of three-body recombination rates in an ultracold gas of $^7$Li atoms in the extremely nonuniversal regime where the two-body scattering length vanishes. We show that the rate is well defined and can be described by two-body parameters only: the scattering length $a$ and the effective range $R_e$. We find the rate to be energy independent, and, by connecting our results with previously reported measurements in the universal limit, we cover the behavior of the three-body recombination in the whole range from weak to strong two-body interactions. We identify a nontrivia…
In plasmas at very low temperatures formation of neutral atoms is dominated by collisional three-body recombination, owing to the strong ~ T^(-9/2) scaling of the corresponding recombination rate with the electron temperature T. While this law is well established at high temperatures, the unphysical divergence as T -> 0 clearly suggest a breakdown in the low-temperature regime. Here, we present a combined molecular dynamics-Monte-Carlo study of electron-ion recombination over a wide range of temperatures and densities. Our results reproduce the known behavior of the recombination rate at high …
Three-body recombination is a prime example of the fundamental interaction between three particles. Due to the complexity of this process it has resisted a comprehensive description. Experimental investigations have mainly focussed on the observation of corresponding loss rates without revealing information on the reaction products. Here, we provide the first general experimental study on the population distribution of molecular quantum states after three-body recombination in a non-resonant regime. We have developed a highly sensitive detection scheme which combines photoionization of the mol…
We have studied the three-body recombination rates on both sides of the interspecies d-wave Feshbach resonance in the $^{85}$Rb\,-$^{87}$Rb-$^{87}$Rb system using the $R$-matrix propagation method in the hyperspherical coordinate frame. Two different mechanisms of recombination rate enhancement for positive and negative $^{85}$Rb\,-$^{87}$Rb d-wave scattering lengths are analyzed. On the positive scattering length side, the recombination rate enhancement occurs due to the existence of three-body shape resonance, while on the negative scattering length side, the coupling between the lowest entr…
We study the universality of the three-body parameters for systems relevant for ultracold quantum gases with positive $s$-wave two-body scattering lengths. Our results account for finite-range effects and their universality is tested by changing the number of deeply bound diatomic states supported by our interaction model. We find that the physics controlling the values of the three-body parameters associated with the ground and excited Efimov states is constrained by a variational principle and can be strongly affected by $d$-wave interactions that prevent both trimer states from merging into…
We study inelastic processes for ultracold three-body systems in which only one interaction is resonant. We have found that the decay rates for weakly bound molecules due to collisions with other atoms can be suppressed not only without fermionic statistics but also when bosonic statistics applies. In addition, we show that at ultracold temperatures three-body recombination involving a single resonant pair of atoms leads mainly to formation of weakly bound molecules which, in turn, are stable against decay. These results indicate that recombination in three-component atomic gases can be used a…
We study Efimov resonances via three-body loss in an ultracold two-component gas of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs atoms close to a Feshbach resonance at 843~G, extending results reported previously [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] to temperatures around 120~nK. The experimental scheme for reaching lower temperatures is based upon compensating the gravity-induced spatial separation of the mass-imbalanced gases with bichromatic optical dipole traps. We observe the first and second excited Li-Cs-Cs Efimov resonance in the magnetic field dependence of the thre…
Recent experiments have demonstrated the spontaneous evolution of a gas of ultracold Rydberg atoms into an expanding ultracold plasma, as well as the reverse process of plasma recombination into highly excited atomic states. Treating the evolution of the plasma on the basis of kinetic equations, while ionization/excitation and recombination are incorporated using rate equations, we have investigated theoretically the Rydberg-to-plasma transition. Including the influence of spatial correlations on the plasma dynamics in an approximate way we find that ionic correlations change the results only …
We study three-body collisions within ultracold mixtures with resonant interspecies $p$-wave interactions. Our results for the three-body effective interaction strength and decay rate are crucial towards understanding the stability and lifetime of these dilute quantum fluids. On resonance, we find that a class of universal scattering pathways emerges, regardless of the details of the short-range interactions. This gives rise quite generally to a remarkable regime where three-body effective interactions dominate over both inelastic decay and two-body effective interactions. Additionally, we fin…
We report on the observation of triatomic Efimov resonances in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Exploiting the wide tunability of interactions resulting from three broad Feshbach resonances in the same spin channel, we measure magnetic-field dependent three-body recombination loss. The positions of the loss resonances yield corresponding values for the three-body parameter, which in universal few-body physics is required to describe three-body phenomena and in particular to fix the spectrum of Efimov states. Our observations show a robust universal behavior with a three-body parameter that st…
Several mechanisms by which an external electromagnetic field influences the temperature of a plasma are studied analytically and specialized to the system of an ultracold plasma (UCP) driven by a uniform radio frequency (RF) field. Heating through collisional absorption is reviewed and applied to UCPs. Furthermore, it is shown that the RF field modifies the three body recombination process by ionizing electrons from intermediate high-lying Rydberg states and upshifting the continuum threshold, resulting in a suppression of three body recombination. Heating through collisionless absorption ass…
We study three-body recombination of Ba$^+$ + Rb + Rb in the mK regime where a single $^{138}$Ba$^{+}$ ion in a Paul trap is immersed into a cloud of ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms. We measure the energy dependence of the three-body rate coefficient $k_3$ and compare the results to the theoretical prediction, $k_3 \propto E_{\textrm{col}}^{-3/4}$ where $E_{\textrm{col}}$ is the collision energy. We find agreement if we assume that the non-thermal ion energy distribution is determined by at least two different micro-motion induced energy scales. Furthermore, using classical trajectory calculations w…
Collisions of $^6$Li$_2$ molecules with free $^6$Li atoms reveal a striking deviation from universal predictions based on long-range van der Waals interactions. Li$_2$ closed-channel molecules are formed in the highest vibrational state near a narrow Feshbach resonance, and decay via two-body collisions with Li$_2$, Li, and Na. For Li$_2$+Li$_2$ and Li$_2$+Na, the decay rates agree with the universal predictions of the quantum Langevin model. In contrast, the rate for Li$_2$+Li is exceptionally small, with an upper bound ten times smaller than the universal prediction. This can be explained by…
The system of four identical bosons with large two-boson scattering length is described using momentum-space integral equations for the four-particle transition operators. The creation of Efimov trimers via ultracold four-boson recombination is studied. The universal behavior of the recombination rate is demonstrated.
We report on the behaviour of the ionization avalanche in an ensemble of ultracold 87Rb atoms coupled to a high lying Rydberg state and investigate extensions to the current model by including the effects of three-body recombination and plasma expansion. To separate the two effects we study the time dependence of the plasma formation at various densities as well as for different nS and nD states. At medium densities and low n we observe the onset of the avalanche as has been reported in other experiments, as well as a subsequent turn-off of the avalanche for longer excitation times, which we a…
In the recent work Fletcher et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., v.99, p.145001 (2007)] reported on the novel experimental technique, enabling to measure the temperature of the expanding ultracold plasmas over a considerable time interval (up to 60-70 μs). It was unexpectedly found that the electron temperature dropped with time as T_e(t) ~ t^{-α} with α= 1.2 +/- 0.1 \approx 1 instead of α= 2, which would be expected for the adiabatic cooling of electrons in the cloud expanding linearly in time. The above-cited authors supposed that 'the difference is likely due to the significant heating effects from 3-…
We report on observations and modeling of interspecies magnetic Feshbach resonances in dilute ultracold mixtures of open-shell alkali-metal $^6$Li and closed-shell $^{173}$Yb atoms with temperatures just above quantum degeneracy for both fermionic species. Resonances are located by detecting magnetic-field-dependent atom loss due to three-body recombination. We resolve closely-located resonances that originate from a weak separation-dependent hyperfine coupling between the electronic spin of $^6$Li and the nuclear spin of $^{173}$Yb, and confirm their magnetic field spacing by ab initio electr…
We report on three-body recombination of a single trapped Rb^+ ion and two neutral Rb atoms in an ultracold atom cloud. We observe that the corresponding rate coefficient K_3 depends on collision energy and is about a factor of 1000 larger than for three colliding neutral Rb atoms. In the three-body recombination process large energies up to several 0.1eV are released leading to an ejection of the ion from the atom cloud. It is sympathetically recooled back into the cloud via elastic binary collisions with cold atoms. Further, we find that the final ionic product of the three-body processes is…
The dimer-atom-atom recombination process in the system of four identical bosons with resonant interactions is studied. The description uses the exact Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas equations for the four-particle transition operators that are solved in the momentum-space framework. The dimer-dimer and atom-trimer channel contributions to the ultracold dimer-atom-atom recombination rate are calculated. The dimer-atom-atom recombination rate greatly exceeds the three-atom recombination rate.
We investigate the scattering cross section of aligned dipolar molecules in low-temperature gases. Over a wide range of collision energies relevant to contemporary experiments, the cross section declines in inverse proportion to the collision speed, and is given nearly exactly by a simple semiclassical formula. At yet lower energies, the cross section becomes independent of energy, and is reproduced within the Born approximation to within corrections due to the s-wave scattering length. While these behaviors are universal for all polar molecules, nevertheless interesting deviations from univer…
In the systems of spin $\frac12$ fermions with resonant $S$-wave interactions supporting only weakly bound dimers the antisymmetry forbids recombination of three (or more) fermions at zero energy. However, the fermion-fermion-dimer recombination is only partially suppressed. It is studied in the framework of momentum-space integral equations for the four-particle transition operators. In the vicinity of the unitary limit the fermion-fermion-dimer recombination rate, rescaled to build dimensionless quantity, is found to be linear in the effective range parameter, enabling a simple and accurate …
Experimental studies with ultracold atoms have enabled major breakthroughs in understanding three-body physics, historically a fundamental yet challenging problem. This is because the interactions among ultracold atoms can be precisely varied using magnetically tunable scattering resonances known as Feshbach resonances. The collisions of ultracold atoms have been discovered to have many universal aspects near the unitarity limit. Away from this limit, many quantum states are expected to be active during a three-body collision, making the collisional observables practically unpredictable. Here …
We analyze reactive collisions of a single Ba$^+$ ion in contact with an ultracold gas of Rb atoms at low three-body collision energies of 2.2(9) mK$\times k_{\mathrm{B}}$. Mapping out the Ba$^+$ loss rate dependence on the Rb atom density we can discern two-body reactive collisions from three-body ones and for the first time determine both rate coefficients which are $k_2=3.1(6)(6)\times 10^{-13}\textrm{cm}^{3}\textrm{s}^{-1}$ and $k_3=1.04(4)(45)\times 10^{-24}\textrm{cm}^{6}\textrm{s}^{-1}$, respectively (statistical and systematic errors in parenthesis). Thus, the measured ternary recombin…
We have experimentally studied the magnetic-field dependence of the decay of a Bose-Einstein condensate of metastable 4He atoms confined in an optical dipole trap, for atoms in the m=+1 and m=-1 magnetic substates, and up to 450 G. Our measurements confirm long-standing calculations of the two-body loss rate coefficient that show an increase above 50 G. We demonstrate that for m=-1 atoms, decay is due to three-body recombination only, with a three-body loss rate coefficient of 6.5(0.4)(0.6)10^(-27)cm^6s^(-1), which is interesting in the context of universal few-body theory. We have also search…
We investigate the stability of a three spin state mixture of ultracold fermionic $^6$Li atoms over a range of magnetic fields encompassing three Feshbach resonances. For most field values, we attribute decay of the atomic population to three-body processes involving one atom from each spin state and find that the three-body loss coefficient varies by over four orders of magnitude. We observe high stability when at least two of the three scattering lengths are small, rapid loss near the Feshbach resonances, and two unexpected resonant loss features. At our highest fields, where all pairwise sc…
We report a thorough investigation of finite-temperature effects on three-body recombination near a triatomic Efimov resonance in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Our measurements cover a wide range from a near-ideal realization of the zero-temperature limit to a strongly temperature-dominated regime. The experimental results are analyzed within a recently introduced theoretical model based on a universal zero-range theory. The temperature-induced shift of the resonance reveals a contribution that points to an energy-dependence of the three-body parameter. We interpret this contribution in te…
We measure the critical scattering length for the appearance of the first three-body bound state, or Efimov three-body parameter, at seven different Feshbach resonances in ultracold 39K atoms. We study both intermediate and narrow resonances, where the three-body spectrum is expected to be determined by the non-universal coupling of two scattering channels. We observe instead approximately the same universal relation of the three-body parameter with the two-body van der Waals radius already found for broader resonances, which can be modeled with a single channel. This unexpected observation su…
In Efimov physics, a three-body parameter (3BP), previously regarded as nonuniversal, uniquely defines bound and scattering properties of three particles. A universal 3BP, however, have been recently shown in experiments and theory in ultracold homonuclear gases. Our present study further predicts a universal 3BP for heteronuclear atomic systems near broad Feshbach resonances, and provides physical interpretations for its origin. We show that for a system composed of two light and one heavy atoms, the physical origin of the universal 3BP is similar to the homonuclear case while for systems com…
For a system of three identical bosons interacting via short-range forces, when two of the atoms are about to form a two-body s-wave dimer, there exists an infinite number of three-body bound states. This effect is the well-known Efimov effect. These three-body states (Efimov states) are found to be universal for ultracold atomic gases and the lowest Efimov state crosses the three-body break-up threshold when the s-wave two-body scattering length is $a \approx -9.73 r_{\rm vdW}$, $r_{\rm vdW}$ being the van der Waals length. This article focuses on a generalized version of this Efimov scenario…
In this paper we discuss the recent discovery of the universality of the three-body parameter (3BP) from Efimov physics. This new result was identified by recent experimental observations in ultracold quantum gases where the value of the s-wave scattering length, $a=a_-$, at which the first Efimov resonance is created was found to be nearly the same for a range of atomic species --- if scaled as $a_-/r_{\rm vdW}$, where $r_{\rm vdW}$ is the van der Waals length. Here, we discuss some of the physical principles related to these observations that emerge from solving the three-body problem with v…
We report the creation and the study of the stability of a repulsive quasi-homogeneous spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas with contact interactions. For the range of scattering lengths $a$ explored, the dominant mechanism of decay is a universal three-body recombination towards a Feshbach bound state. We observe that the recombination coefficient $K_3\propto ε_\text{kin} a^6$, where the first factor, the average kinetic energy per particle $ε_\text{kin}$, arises from a three-body threshold law, and the second one from the universality of recombination. Both scaling laws are consequences of Pauli blocking ef…
We study three-atom inelastic scattering in ultracold \textsuperscript{39}K near a Feshbach resonance of intermediate coupling strength. The non-universal character of such resonance leads to an abnormally large Efimov absolute length scale and a relatively small effective range $r_e$, allowing the features of the \textsuperscript{39}K Efimov spectrum to be better isolated from the short-range physics. Meticulous characterization of and correction for finite temperature effects ensure high accuracy on the measurements of these features at large-magnitude scattering lengths. For a single Feshba…

A study of the universal physics for three oriented fermionic dipoles in the hyperspherical adiabatic representation predicts a single long-lived three-dipole state, which exists in only one three-body symmetry, should form near a two-dipole resonance. Our analysis reveals the spatial configuration of the universal state, and the scaling of its binding energy and lifetime with the strength of the dipolar interaction. In addition, three-body recombination of fermionic dipoles is found to be important even at ultracold energies. An additional finding is that an effective long-range repulsion ari…
We report on the measurement of four-body recombination rate coefficients in an atomic gas. Our results obtained with an ultracold sample of cesium atoms at negative scattering lengths show a resonant enhancement of losses and provide strong evidence for the existence of a pair of four-body states, which is strictly connected to Efimov trimers via universal relations. Our findings confirm recent theoretical predictions and demonstrate the enrichment of the Efimov scenario when a fourth particle is added to the generic three-body problem.
A universal dimer is subject to secondary collisions with atoms when formed in a cloud of ultracold atoms via three-body recombination. We show that in a collisionally opaque medium, the value of the scattering length that results in the maximum number of secondary collisions may not correspond to the Efimov resonance at the atom-dimer threshold and thus can not be automatically associated with it. This result explains a number of controversies in recent experimental results on universal three-body states and supports the emerging evidence for the significant finite range corrections to the fi…
