We study three-body collisions within ultracold mixtures with resonant interspecies $p$-wave interactions. Our results for the three-body effective interaction strength and decay rate are crucial towards understanding the stability and lifetime of these dilute quantum fluids. On resonance, we find that a class of universal scattering pathways emerges, regardless of the details of the short-range interactions. This gives rise quite generally to a remarkable regime where three-body effective interactions dominate over both inelastic decay and two-body effective interactions. Additionally, we find a series of mass-ratio-dependent trimer resonances further from resonance.
We study the universality of the three-body parameters for systems relevant for ultracold quantum gases with positive $s$-wave two-body scattering lengths. Our results account for finite-range effects and their universality is tested by changing the number of deeply bound diatomic states supported by our interaction model. We find that the physics controlling the values of the three-body parameters associated with the ground and excited Efimov states is constrained by a variational principle and can be strongly affected by $d$-wave interactions that prevent both trimer states from merging into…
We report the observation of a dimer-dimer inelastic collision resonance for ultracold Feshbach molecules made of bosonic sodium and rubidium atoms. This resonance, which we attribute to the crossing of the dimer-dimer threshold with a heteronuclear tetramer state, manifests itself as a pronounced inelastic loss peak of dimers when the interspecies scattering length between the constituent atoms is tuned. Near this resonance, a strong modification of the temperature dependence of the dimer-dimer scattering is observed. Our result provides insight into the heteronuclear four-body system consist…
Collisions of $^6$Li$_2$ molecules with free $^6$Li atoms reveal a striking deviation from universal predictions based on long-range van der Waals interactions. Li$_2$ closed-channel molecules are formed in the highest vibrational state near a narrow Feshbach resonance, and decay via two-body collisions with Li$_2$, Li, and Na. For Li$_2$+Li$_2$ and Li$_2$+Na, the decay rates agree with the universal predictions of the quantum Langevin model. In contrast, the rate for Li$_2$+Li is exceptionally small, with an upper bound ten times smaller than the universal prediction. This can be explained by…
We report on the observation of triatomic Efimov resonances in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Exploiting the wide tunability of interactions resulting from three broad Feshbach resonances in the same spin channel, we measure magnetic-field dependent three-body recombination loss. The positions of the loss resonances yield corresponding values for the three-body parameter, which in universal few-body physics is required to describe three-body phenomena and in particular to fix the spectrum of Efimov states. Our observations show a robust universal behavior with a three-body parameter that st…
We report the investigation on dipolar collisions in rotational state mixtures of ultracold bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules. The large resonant dipole-dipole interaction between molecules in rotational states of opposite parities brings about significant modifications to their collisions, even when an electric field is not present. In this work, this effect is revealed by measuring the dramatically enhanced two-body loss rate constants in the mixtures. In addition, the dipolar interaction strength can be tuned by preparing the NaRb mixture in different rotational levels with microwave spe…
The mass-imbalanced three-body recombination process that forms a shallow dimer is shown to possess a rich Efimov-Stückelberg landscape, with corresponding spectra that differ fundamentally from the homonuclear case. A semi-analytical treatment of the three-body recombination predicts an unusual spectra with intertwined resonance peaks and minima, and yields in-depth insight into the behavior of the corresponding Efimov spectra. In particular, the patterns of the Efimov-Stückelberg landscape are shown to depend inherently on the degree of diabaticity of the three-body collisions, which strongl…
Under certain circumstances, three or more interacting particles may form bound states. While the general few-body problem is not analytically solvable, the so-called Efimov trimers appear for a system of three particles with resonant two-body interactions. The binding energies of these trimers are predicted to be universally connected to each other, independent of the microscopic details of the interaction. By exploiting a Feshbach resonance to widely tune the interactions between trapped ultracold lithium atoms, we find evidence for two universally connected Efimov trimers and their associat…
We combine theory and experiment to investigate five-body recombination in an ultracold gas of atomic cesium at negative scattering length. A refined theoretical model, in combination with extensive laboratory tunability of the interatomic interactions, enables the five-body resonant recombination rate to be calculated and measured. The position of the new observed recombination feature agrees with a recent theoretical prediction and supports the prediction of a family of universal cluster states at negative $a$ that are tied to an Efimov trimer.
We demonstrate microwave dressing on ultracold, fermionic ${}^{23}$Na${}^{40}$K ground-state molecules and observe resonant dipolar collisions with cross sections exceeding three times the $s$-wave unitarity limit. The origin of these collisions is the resonant alignment of the approaching molecules' dipoles along the intermolecular axis, which leads to strong attraction. We explain our observations with a conceptually simple two-state picture based on the Condon approximation. Furthermore, we perform coupled-channels calculations that agree well with the experimentally observed collision rate…
We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy to investigate a polarized spin-mixture of ultracold ${}^6$Li atoms close to a broad Feshbach scattering resonance. Focusing on the regime of strong repulsive interactions, we observe well-defined coherent quasiparticles even for unitarity-limited interactions. We characterize the many-body system by extracting the key properties of repulsive Fermi polarons: the energy $E_+$, the effective mass $m^*$, the residue $Z$ and the decay rate $Γ$. Above a critical interaction, $E_+$ is found to exceed the Fermi energy of the bath while $m^*$ diverges and even tu…
In systems of ultracold atoms, pairwise interactions can be resonantly enhanced by a new mechanism which does not rely upon a magnetic Feshbach resonance. In this mechanism, interactions are controlled by tuning the frequency of an oscillating parallel component of the magnetic field close to the transition frequency between the scattering atoms and a two-atom bound state. The real part of the resulting s-wave scattering length $a$ is resonantly enhanced when the oscillation frequency is close to the transition frequency. The resonance parameters can be controlled by varying the amplitude of t…
We consider a one-dimensional bosonic gas on a ring lattice, in the presence of a localized barrier, and under the effect of an artificial gauge field. By means of exact diagonalization we study the persistent currents at varying interactions and barrier strength, for various values of lattice filling. While generically the persistent currents are strongly suppressed in the Mott insulator phase, they show a resonant behaviour when the barrier strength becomes of the order of the interaction energy. We explain this phenomenon using an effective single-particle model. We show that this effect is…
The out-of-equilibrium dynamics of finite ultracold bosonic ensembles in periodically driven one-dimensional optical lattices is investigated. Our study reveals that the driving enforces the bosons in different wells to oscillate in-phase and to exhibit a dipole-like mode. A wide range from weak-to-strong driving frequencies is covered and a resonance-like behaviour of the intra-well dynamics is discussed. In the proximity of the resonance a rich intraband excitation spectrum is observed. The single particle excitation mechanisms are studied in the framework of Floquet theory elucidating the r…
We propose an experimentally realizable scheme to produce triatomic ultralong-range Rydberg molecules (TURM), formed in ultracold KRb traps. A near resonant coupling of the non-zero quantum defect Rydberg levels with the KRb molecule in N=0 and N=2 rotational levels, is engineered which exploits the unique Rydberg electron-molecule anisotropic dipole interaction. This near resonant coupling enhances the TURM binding and produces favorable Franck-Condon factors. Schemes for both postassium and rubidium excitations are demonstrated.
We report exact numerical calculation of chemical potential, condensate fraction and specific heat of $N$ non-interacting bosons confined in an isotropic harmonic oscillator trap in one, two and three dimensions, as also for interacting bosons in a 3D trap. Quasi phase transitions are observed in all these cases, including one-dimension, as shown by a rapid change of all the thermodynamic quantities at the transition point. The change becomes more rapid as $N$ increases in 2D and 3D cases. However with increase in $N$, the sudden change in the nature of specific heat, gets gradually wiped out …
In systems of ultracold atoms, pairwise interactions are resonantly enhanced by the application of an oscillating magnetic field that is parallel to the spin-quantization axis of the atoms. The resonance occurs when the frequency of the applied field is precisely tuned near the transition frequency between the scattering atoms and a diatomic molecule. The resulting cross section can be made more than two orders of magnitude larger than the cross section in the absence of the oscillating field. The low momentum resonance properties have a universal description that is independent of the atomic …
Recent measurements of Efimov resonances in a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We find an Efimov-like resonance in the rate of inelastic collisions between $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms. However, we do not observe any Efimov-related res…
We observe and analyze d-wave resonant scattering of bosons in tightly confining harmonic waveguides. It is shown that the d-wave resonance emerges in the quasi-1D regime as an imprint of a 3D d-wave shape resonance. A scaling relation for the position of the d-wave resonance is provided. By changing the trap frequency, ultracold scattering can be continuously tuned from s-wave to d-wave resonant behavior. The effect can be utilized for the realization of ultracold atomic gases interacting via higher partial waves and opens a novel possibility for studying strongly correlated atomic systems be…
We investigate the excitation properties of finite utracold bosonic systems in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with a time-dependent interaction strength. The driving of the interatomic coupling induces excitations of the relative motion exclusively with specific and controllable contributions of momentarily excited many-body states. Mechanisms for selective excitation to few-body analogues of collective modes and acceleration occur in the vicinity of resonances. We study via the few-body spectrum and a Floquet analysis the excitation mechanisms, and the corresponding impact of the driving fre…
Based on a one-dimensional double-well superlattice with a unit filling of ultracold atoms per site, we propose a scheme to generate scalable entangled states in the superlattice through resonant lattice shakings. Our scheme utilizes periodic lattice modulations to entangle two atoms in each unit cell with respect to their orbital degree of freedom, and the complete atomic system in the superlattice becomes a cluster of bipartite entangled atom pairs. To demonstrate this we perform $ab \ initio$ quantum dynamical simulations using the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree Meth…
It is now possible to study experimentally the combined effect of disorder and interactions in cold atom physics. Motivated by these developments we investigate the dynamics around the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas with short-range interactions in a quasiperiodic potential by the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) technique. By tuning disorder and interactions we study the MIT from the weakly to the strongly interacting limit. The MIT is not universal as time evolution, well described by a process of anomalous diffusion, depends q…
We present investigations of the formation rate and collisional stability of lithium Feshbach molecules in an ultracold three-component mixture composed of two resonantly interacting fermionic 6-Li spin states and bosonic 174-Yb. We observe long molecule lifetimes (> 100 ms) even in the presence of a large ytterbium bath and extract reaction rate coefficients of the system. We find good collisional stability of the mixture in the unitary regime, opening new possibilities for studies and probes of strongly interacting quantum gases in contact with a bath species.
The two most widely used ion cooling methods are laser cooling and sympathetic cooling by elastic collisions (ECs). Here we demonstrate another method of cooling ions that is based on resonant charge exchange (RCE) between the trapped ion and the ultracold parent atom. Specifically, trapped Cs$^{+}$ ions are cooled by collisions with co-trapped, ultracold Cs atoms and, separately, by collisions with co-trapped, ultracold Rb atoms. We observe that the cooling of Cs$^{+}$ ions by Cs atoms is more efficient than cooling of Cs$^{+}$ ions by Rb atoms. This signals the presence of a cooling mechanis…
The Higgs amplitude mode of the order parameter of an ultracold confined Fermi gas in the BCS regime after a quench of the coupling constant is analyzed theoretically. Characteristic features are a damped oscillation which at a certain transition time changes into a rather irregular dynamics. We compare the numerical solution of the full set of nonlinear equations of motion for the normal and anomalous Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations with a linearized approximation. In doing so the transition time as well as the difference between resonant systems, i.e., systems where the Fermi energy is …
We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground…
We solve the two-particle s-wave scattering for an ultracold atom gas confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trapping potential which is periodically modulated. The interaction between the atoms is included in terms of Fermi's pseudopotential. For a modulated isotropic transverse harmonic confinement, the atomic center of mass and relative degrees of freedom decouple and an exact solution is possible. We use the Floquet approach to show that additional photon-assisted resonant scattering channels open up due to the harmonic modulation. Applying the Bethe-Peierls boundary condition, we obtain the …
Magnetic Feshbach resonances have allowed great success in the production of ultracold diatomic molecules from bi-alkali mixtures, but have so far eluded observation in mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth-like atoms. Inelastic collisional properties of ultracold atomic systems exhibit resonant behavior in the vicinity of such resonances, providing a detection signature. We study magnetic field dependent inelastic effects via atom loss spectroscopy in an ultracold heteronuclear mixture of alkali $^6$Li in the ground state and alkaline-earth-like $^{174}$Yb in an excited electronic metastable …
We measure the critical scattering length for the appearance of the first three-body bound state, or Efimov three-body parameter, at seven different Feshbach resonances in ultracold 39K atoms. We study both intermediate and narrow resonances, where the three-body spectrum is expected to be determined by the non-universal coupling of two scattering channels. We observe instead approximately the same universal relation of the three-body parameter with the two-body van der Waals radius already found for broader resonances, which can be modeled with a single channel. This unexpected observation su…
In Efimov physics, a three-body parameter (3BP), previously regarded as nonuniversal, uniquely defines bound and scattering properties of three particles. A universal 3BP, however, have been recently shown in experiments and theory in ultracold homonuclear gases. Our present study further predicts a universal 3BP for heteronuclear atomic systems near broad Feshbach resonances, and provides physical interpretations for its origin. We show that for a system composed of two light and one heavy atoms, the physical origin of the universal 3BP is similar to the homonuclear case while for systems com…
We study the collisional properties of an ultracold mixture of cesium atoms and dimers close to a Feshbach resonance near 550G in the regime of positive $s$-wave scattering lengths. We observe an atom-dimer loss resonance that is related to Efimov's scenario of trimer states. The resonance is found at a value of the scattering length that is different from a previous observation at low magnetic fields. This indicates non-universal behavior of the Efimov spectrum for positive scattering lengths. We compare our observations with predictions from effective field theory and with a recent model bas…
Collisional resonances are an important tool which has been used to modify interactions in ultracold gases, for realizing novel Hamiltonians in quantum simulations, for creating molecules from atomic gases and for controlling chemical reactions. So far, such resonances have been observed for atom-atom collisions, atom-molecule collisions and collisions between Feshbach molecules which are very weakly bound. Whether such resonances exist for ultracold ground state molecules has been debated due to the possibly high density of states and/or rapid decay of the resonant complex. Here we report a v…
We consider the spectrum of two ultracold harmonically trapped atoms interacting via short-range interactions. The Green's function approach is used to unify the two and three dimensional cases. We derive criteria for the universality of the spectrum, i.e. its independence of the details of the short-range interaction. The results in three dimensions are examplified for narrow s-wave Feshbach resonances and we show how effective range corrections can modify the rearrangement of the level structure. However, this requires extremely narrow resonances or very tight traps that are not currently ex…
Ultracold atomic gases have recently become a driving force in few-body physics due to the observation of the Efimov effect. While initially observed in equal mass systems, one expects even richer few-body physics in the heteronuclear case. In previous experiments with ultracold mixtures of potassium and rubidium, an unexpected non-universal behavior of Efimov resonances was observed. In contrast, we measure the scattering length dependent three-body recombination coefficient in ultracold heteronuclear mixtures of $^{39}\mathrm{K}$-\87Rb and $^{41}\mathrm{K}$-\87Rb and do not observe any signa…
We investigate three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance in a gas of ultracold 7Li atoms prepared in the absolute ground state and perform a comparison with previously reported results of a different nuclear-spin state [N. Gross et.al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 163202, (2009)]. We extend the previously reported universality in three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance to the absolute ground state. We show that the positions and widths of recombination minima and Efimov resonances are identical for both states which indicates that the short-range physics is nuclear-s…
The different resonant regimes that can be achieved by using a magnetic Feshbach resonance are analyzed with a separable two-channel model. Emphasis is put on the case of narrow resonances in a region of intermediate detuning where a shallow dimer exists and an approximate law including the background scattering length for the three-body recombination rate is derived.
We optimize a collision-induced cooling process for ultracold atoms in the nondegenerate regime. It makes use of a Feshbach resonance, instead of rf radiation in evaporative cooling, to selectively expel hot atoms from a trap. Using functional minimization we analytically show that for the optimal cooling process the resonance energy must be tuned such that it linearly follows the temperature. Here, optimal cooling is defined as maximizing the phase-space density after a fixed cooling duration. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical Monte-Carlo simulations. In order to simulate more…
A theoretical study of the low-energy scattering properties of two aligned identical bosonic and fermionic dipoles in the presence of isotropic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is presented. A general treatment of particles with arbitrary (pseudo-) spin is given in the framework of multi-channel scattering. At ultracold temperatures and away from shape resonances or closed-channel dominated resonances, the cross-section can be well described within the Born approximation to within corrections due to the s-wave scattering. We compare our findings with numerical calculations and find excellent agreemen…
Ultracold atomic gases have developed into prime systems for experimental studies of Efimov three-body physics and related few-body phenomena, which occur in the universal regime of resonant interactions. In the last few years, many important breakthroughs have been achieved, confirming basic predictions of universal few-body theory and deepening our understanding of such systems. We review the basic ideas along with the fast experimental developments of the field, focussing on ultracold cesium gases as a well-investigated model system. Triatomic Efimov resonances, atom-dimer Efimov resonances…
A measurement technique is described which has the potential to map the atomic site occupancies of ultracold atoms in a short-period three-dimensional optical lattice. The method uses accordion and pinning lattices, together with polarization gradient cooling and fluorescence detection, to measure the positions of individual atoms within the sample in three dimensions at a resolution of around half the atomic resonant wavelength. The method measures the site occupancy, rather than the parity of the site occupancy, of atoms in the lattice. It is expected that such measurements hold significant …
We study the effective one-dimensional (1D) scattering of two distinguishable atoms confined individually by {\em separated} transverse harmonic traps. With equal trapping frequency for two s-wave interacting atoms, we find that by tuning the trap separations, the system can undergo {\em double} 1D scattering resonance, named as the separation induced resonance(SIR), when the ratio between the confinement length and s-wave scattering length is within $(0.791,1.46]$. Near SIR, the scattering property shows unique dependence on the resonance position. The universality of a many-body system on sc…
In this paper we discuss the recent discovery of the universality of the three-body parameter (3BP) from Efimov physics. This new result was identified by recent experimental observations in ultracold quantum gases where the value of the s-wave scattering length, $a=a_-$, at which the first Efimov resonance is created was found to be nearly the same for a range of atomic species --- if scaled as $a_-/r_{\rm vdW}$, where $r_{\rm vdW}$ is the van der Waals length. Here, we discuss some of the physical principles related to these observations that emerge from solving the three-body problem with v…
We propose a general scheme for inducing resonant exchange between spins or pseudo-spins of unmatched levels via periodic driving. The basic idea is illustrated for a system of two heteronuclear atoms, for which analytical results are provided for the effective spin exchange (SE) interaction strength. It is then applied to the mixture of 23Na and 87Rb atoms with a radio-frequency (rf) or microwave field near-resonant to the mismatched Zeeman level spacings. SE interaction engineered this way is applicable to ultracold quantum gas mixtures involving spinor Bose-Bose, Bose-Fermi, and Fermi-Fermi…
Designer optical control of interactions in ultracold atomic gases has wide application, from creating new quantum phases to modeling the physics of black holes. We demonstrate spatial control of interactions in a two-component cloud of $^6$Li fermions, using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) to create a "sandwich" of resonantly and weakly interacting regions. Interaction designs are imprinted on the trapped cloud by two laser beams and manipulated with just MHz changes in the frequency of one beam. We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy to measure the imprinted 1D spatial profile…
We use laser light near-resonant with a molecular bound-to-bound transition to control a magnetic Feshbach resonance in ultracold Fermi gases of $^{40}$K atoms. The spectrum of excited molecular states is measured by applying a laser field that couples the ground Feshbach molecular state to electronically excited molecular states. Nine strong bound-to-bound resonances are observed below the $^{2}P_{1/2}+^{2}S_{1/2}$ threshold. We use radio-frequency spectroscopy to characterize the laser-dressed bound state near a specific bound-to-bound resonance and show clearly the shift of the magnetic Fes…
Low dimensional behavior of two ultra-cold atoms trapped in two-and one-dimensional waveguides is investigated in the vicinity of a magnetic Feshbach resonance. A quantitative two-channel model for the Feshbach mechanism is used allowing an exhaustive analysis of low-dimensional resonant scattering behavior and of the confinement induced bound states. The role of the different parameters of the resonance is depicted in this context. Results are compared with the ones of the zero-range approach. The relevance of the effective range approximation in low dimensions is studied. Examples of known r…
The low-energy spectrum of three particles interacting via nearly resonant two-body interactions in the Efimov regime is set by the so-called three-body parameter. We show that the three-body parameter is essentially determined by the zero-energy two-body correlation. As a result, we identify two classes of two-body interactions for which the three-body parameter has a universal value in units of their effective range. One class involves the universality of the three-body parameter recently found in ultracold atom systems. The other is relevant to short-range interactions that can be found in …
We consider two-dimensional weakly-bound heterospecies molecules formed in a Fermi-Bose mixture with attractive Fermi-Bose and repulsive Bose-Bose interactions. Bosonic exchanges lead to an intermolecular attraction, which can be controlled and tuned to a p-wave resonance. Such attractive fermionic molecules can be realized in quasi-two-dimensional ultracold isotopic or heteronuclear mixtures. We show that they are stable with respect to the recombination to deeply-bound molecular states and with respect to the formation of higher-order clusters (trimers, tetramers, etc.)
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances in ultracold atomic systems are chiefly identified and characterized through time consuming atom loss spectroscopy. We describe an off-resonant dispersive optical probing technique to rapidly locate Feshbach resonances and demonstrate the method by locating four resonances of $^{87}$Rb, between the $|\rm{F} = 1, \rm{m_F}=1 \rangle$ and $|\rm{F} = 2, \rm{m_F}=0 \rangle$ states. Despite the loss features being $\lesssim0.1$ G wide, we require only 21 experimental runs to explore a magnetic field range >18 G, where $1~\rm{G}=10^{-4}$ T. The resonances cons…
A toolbox for the quantum simulation of polarons in ultracold atoms is presented. Motivated by the impressive experimental advances in the area of ultracold atomic mixtures, we theoretically study the problem of ultracold atomic impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate mixture (BEC). The coupling between impurity and BEC gives rise to the formation of polarons whose mutual interaction can be effectively tuned using an external laser driving a quasi-resonant Raman transition between the BEC components. Our scheme allows one to change the effective interactions between polarons in diffe…
We provide an exact solution of the Efimov spectrum in ultracold gases within the standard two-channel model for Feshbach resonances. It is shown that the finite range in the Feshbach coupling makes the introduction of an adjustable three-body parameter obsolete. The solution explains the empirical relation between the scattering length a_- where the first Efimov state appears at the atom threshold and the van der Waals length l_vdw for open channel dominated resonances. There is a continuous crossover to the closed channel dominated limit, where the scale in the energy level diagram as a func…
