In the present paper we investigate the transmission and reflection band behavior for a plane electromagnetic wave falling obliquely on an ideal layered structure. The dependence of this behavior on the problem parameters and wave incident angle is considered. It is shown, that in general case the band width is a non-monotonous function of the problem parameters. A condition is found, which defines the possibility of the contact of the transmission bands. This condition has the same form for s and p waves. It is also shown that irrespective of the wave polarization, the transmission coefficient equals to the unit at the contact points.
One of the striking properties of artificially structured materials is the negative refraction, an optical feature that known natural materials do not exhibit. Here, we propose a simple design, composed of two parallel layers of materials with different refraction indices $n_1=-n_2$, that constructs perfect reflection-less devices. The electromagnetic waves can tunnel from one layer to the other, a feature that resembles a truncation of the physical space leading to an electromagnetic warp drive. Since the refractive indices do not require any large values, this method demonstrates for the fir…
We study the no reflection condition for a planar boundary between vacuum and an isotropic chiral medium. In general chiral media, elliptically polarized waves incident at a particular angle satisfy the no reflection condition. When the wave impedance and wavenumber of the chiral medium are equal to the corresponding parameters of vacuum, one of the circularly polarized waves is transmitted to the medium without reflection or refraction for all angles of incidence. We propose a circular polarizing beam splitter as a simple application of the no reflection effect.
The problem of electromagnetic pulses propagation in plasma was studied in connection with various problems of radio engineering and radar systems. The description of propagation such signals is based on exactly solvable problems for monochromatic waves. We considered two cases: smooth layer and thin sheet. The conditions for different type of reflection are founded.
This work is concerned with the propagation of electromagnetic waves in isotropic chiral media and with the effects produced by a plane boundary between two such media. In analogy with the phenomena of reflection and refraction of plane electromagnetic waves in ordinary dielectrics, the kinematical and dynamical aspects of these phenomena are studied, such as the intensity of the various wave components and the change in the polarization of the wave as it crosses the boundary. As a prerequisite of this, we show that the plane wave solution must be written as a suitable superposition of the cir…
Transformation optics offers an unconventional approach to the control of electromagnetic fields. A transformation optical structure is designed by first applying a form-invariant coordinate transform to Maxwell's equations, in which part of free space is distorted in some desired manner. The coordinate transformation is then applied to the permittivity and permeability tensors to yield the specification for a complex medium with desired functionality. The transformation optical structures proposed to date, such as electromagnetic "invisibility" cloaks and concentrators, are inherently reflect…
We investigate the reflection properties of electromagnetic/optical waves in isotropic chiral media. When the chiral parameter is strong enough, we show that an unusual \emph{negative reflection} occurs at the interface of the chiral medium and a perfectly conducting plane, where the incident wave and one of reflected eigenwaves lie in the same side of the boundary normal. Using such a property, we further demonstrate that such a conducting plane can be used for focusing in the strong chiral medium. The related equations under paraxial optics approximation are deduced. In a special case of chi…
Electromagnetic (EM) waves propagating through an inhomogeneous medium inevitably scatter whenever electromagnetic properties of the medium change on the scale of a single wavelength. This fundamental phenomenon constrains how optical structures are designed and interfaced with each other. Recent theoretical work indicates that electromagnetic structures collectively known as photonic topological insulators (PTIs) can be employed to overcome this fundamental limitation, thereby paving the way for ultra-compact photonic structures that no longer have to be wavelength-scale smooth. Here we prese…
We present a solution to the problem of partial reflection and refraction of a polarized paraxial Gaussian beam at the interface between two transparent media. The Fedorov--Imbert transverse shift of the centers of gravity of the reflected and refracted beams are calculated. Our results differ in general case from ones derived previously by other authors. In particular, they obey general conservation law for the beams' total angular momentum but do not obey one-particle conservation laws for individual photons, which have been proposed by Onoda et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 083901 (2004)]. We a…
We consider a semi-infinite spatially dispersive dielectric with unequal transverse and longitudinal susceptibilities. The effect of the boundary is characterized by arbitrary reflection coefficients for polarization waves in the material that propagate to the surface. Specific values of these coefficients correspond to various additional boundary conditions (ABC) for Maxwell's equations. We derive the electromagnetic reflection and transmission coefficients at the boundary and investigate their dependence on material parameters and ABC. We also investigate the electromagnetic zero-point and t…
Recent theoretical advances applied to metamaterials have opened new avenues to design a coating that hides objects from electromagnetic radiation and even the sight. Here, we propose a new design of cloaking devices that creates perfect invisibility in isotropic media. A combination of positive and negative refractive indices, called plus-minus construction, is essential to achieve perfect invisibility (i.e., no time delay and total absence of reflection). Contrary to the common understanding that between two isotropic materials having different refractive indices the electromagnetic reflecti…
The dynamical characteristics of electromagnetic fields include energy, momentum, angular momentum (spin) and helicity. We analyze their spatial distributions near the planar interface between two transparent and non-dispersive media, when the incident monochromatic plane wave with arbitrary polarization is totally reflected, and an evanescent wave is formed in the medium with lower optical density. Based on the recent arguments in favor of the Minkowski definition of the electromagnetic momentum in a material medium [Phys. Rev. A 83, 013823 (2011); 86, 055802 (2012); Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 073…
Theoretical and computational study of reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves with $p$-polarized and normal incidence electric wave amplitude vector on anisotropic, inhomogeneous and linear medium has been done. The medium used in this study is a model of susceptibility in the form of rank-2 tensor which its value depends on the frequency, position and time. Theoretical and computational formulation of transmittance and reflectance are then tested using vacuum and FeF$_2$ magnetic material.
We present the classical electromagnetic theory framework of reflection of a light beam carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) by an in-plane magnetic structure with generic symmetry. Depending on the magnetization symmetry, we find a change in the OAM content of the reflected beam due to magneto-optic interaction and an asymmetric far-field intensity profile. This leads to three types of Magnetic Helicoidal Dichroism (MHD), observed when switching the OAM of the incoming beam, the magnetization sign, or both. In cases of sufficient symmetries, we establish analytical formulas which link an e…
Radiative emission from an open-ended unflanged planar dielectric waveguide is studied for the case of TM polarization on the basis of an iterative scheme. The first step of the scheme leads to approximate values for the reflection coefficients and electromagnetic fields inside and outside the waveguide. It is shown that for the related problems of reflection from a step potential in one-dimensional quantum mechanics and of Fresnel reflection of an electromagnetic plane wave from a half-space the iterative scheme is in accordance with the exact solution.

Reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves by artificial periodic composites (metamaterials) can be accurately modeled by an effective medium theory only if the boundary of the medium is explicitly taken into account and the two effective parameters of the medium -- the index of refraction and the impedance -- are correctly determined. Theories that consider infinite periodic composites do not satisfy the above condition. As a result, they cannot model reflection and transmission by finite samples with the desired accuracy and are not useful for design of metamaterial-based devices. As…
We have experimentally realized Brewster's effect for transverse-electric waves with metamaterials. In dielectric media, Brewster's no-reflection effect arises only for transverse-magnetic waves. However, it has been theoretically predicted that Brewster's effect arises for TE waves under the condition that the relative permeability r is not equal to unity. We have designed an array of split-ring resonators as a metamaterial with mu_r 1 using a finite-difference time-domain method. The reflection measurements were carried out in a 3-GHz region and the disappearance of reflected waves at a part…
The tunneling time is here investigated by means of an electromagnetic model, for a system where a gap, between two parallel planes, acts as a classically-forbidden region for an impinging pulse with incidence angle larger than the critical angle. In all cases of frustrated total reflection we obtain a superluminal behavior both for phase and group delays.
A single mode electromagnetic resonator coupled to a two-level hybrid-quantum-dot(hQD) is studied theoretically as a laser(maser), when the hQD is driven out of equilibrium with external applied d.c. bias voltage. Using the formalism of the non-equilibrium Green's functions for the hQD and the semi-classical laser equations, we determine the relevant physical quantities of the system. We find that due to the resonant Andreev reflections and the formation of the Floquet-Andreev side-resonances in the sub-gap region, at appropriate gate voltages and above a certain threshold bias voltage and dam…
Exerting well-defined control over the reflection $(R)$, absorption $(A)$, and transmission $(T)$ of electromagnetic waves is a key objective in quantum optics. To this end, one often utilizes hybrid structures comprised of elements with different optical properties in order to achieve features such as high $R$ or high $A$ for incident light. A desirable goal would be the possibility to tune between all three regimes of nearly perfect reflection, absorption, and transmission within the same device, thus swapping between the cases $R\to 1$, $A\to1$, and $T\to1$ dynamically. We here show that a …
We propose a polarization modulation scheme of electromagnetic (EM) waves through reflection of a tunable metamaterial reflector/absorber. By constructing the metamaterial with resonant unit cells coupled by diodes, we demonstrate that the EM reflections for orthogonal polarized incident waves can be tuned independently by adjusting the bias voltages on the corresponding diodes. Owing to this feature, the reflected EM waves can be electrically controlled to a linear polarization with continuously tunable azimuth angle from 0o to 90o at the resonant frequency, or an elliptical polarization with…
We present a mathematical formalism describing the propagation of a completely general electromagnetic wave in a birefringent medium. Analytic formulas for the refraction and reflection from a plane interface are obtained. As a particular example, a Bessel beam impinging at an arbitrary angle is analyzed in detail. Some numerical results showing the formation and destruction of optical vortices are presented.
A topological insulator is classically modeled as an isotropic dielectric-magnetic with a magnetoelectric pseudoscalar $Ψ$ existing in its bulk while its surface is charge-free and current-free. An alternative model is obtained by setting $Ψ\equiv0$ and incorporating surface charge and current densities characterized by an admittance $γ$. Analysis of plane-wave reflection and refraction due to a topological-insulator half space reveals that the parameters $Ψ$ and $γ$ arise identically in the reflection and transmission coefficients, implying that the two classical models cannot be distinguishe…
Applying Artmann's formula to the TE-polarized incident waves, we theoretically show that the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts near the angle of the pseudo-Brewster dip of the reflection from a slab of chiral metamaterial can be greatly enhanced. The GH shifts are observed for both parallel and perpendicular components of the reflected field. In addition, it is found that the GH shifts depend not only on the slab thickness and the incident angle, but also on the constitutive parameters of the chiral medium. In particular, when the incident angle is close to the critical angle of total reflection for L…
Graphene plasmonic nanostructures enable subwavelength confinement of electromagnetic energy from the mid-infrared down to the terahertz frequencies. By exploiting the spectrally varying light scattering phase at vicinity of the resonant frequency of the plasmonic nanostructure, it is possible to control the angle of reflection of an incoming light beam. We demonstrate, through full-wave electromagnetic simulations based on Maxwell equations, the electrical control of the angle of reflection of a mid-infrared light beam by using an aperiodic array of graphene nanoribbons, whose widths are engi…
We report that normal incidence reflection and transmission of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves from and through planar split-ring metamaterials with chiral symmetry breaking depends on the incidence direction and handedness of circular polarization. The effect has a resonant nature and is linked to the lack of mirror-symmetry in the metamaterial pattern leading to a polarization-sensitive excitation of electric and magnetic dipolar responses in the meta-molecules.
We study the interaction of electromagnetic (EM) radiation with single-layer graphene and a stack of parallel graphene sheets at arbitrary angles of incidence. It is found that the behavior is qualitatively different for transverse magnetic (or p-polarized) and transverse electric (or s-polarized) waves. In particular, the absorbance of single-layer graphene attains minimum (maximum) for p (s) polarization, at the angle of total internal reflection when the light comes from a medium with a higher dielectric constant. In the case of equal dielectric constants of the media above and beneath grap…
For the first time it is shown that for thin metallic films thickness of which not exceed thickness of skin-layer, the problem allows analytical solution for arbitrary boundary value problems. The analysis of dependence of coefficients of transmission, reflection and absorbtion on angle incidence, thickness of films and coefficient of specular reflection is carried out.
It is shown that for thin metal films, thickness of which does not exceed a thickness of a skin-layer, the problem allows analytical solution for any boundary conditions. The analysis of transmission, reflection and absorption of an electromagnetic wave coefficients depending on a angle of incidence, thickness of a layer, coefficient of specular reflection and frequency of oscillations of electromagnetic field is carried out.
Resonant electromagnetic modes are analyzed inside a dielectric cavity of equilateral triangular cross section and refractive index n, surrounded by a uniform medium of refractive index n'. The field confinement is determined only under the requirements needed to maintain total internal reflection of the internal electromagnetic fields, matched to exponentially decaying evanescent waves outside the cavity. Two-dimensional electromagnetics is considered, with no dependence on the coordinate perpendicular to the cross section; hence, independent transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (…
We present a solution to the problem of reflection/refraction of a polarized Gaussian beam on the interface between two transparent media. The transverse shifts of the beams' centers of gravity are calculated. They always satisfy the total angular momentum conservation law for beams, however, in general, do not satisfy the conservation laws for individual photons in consequence of the lack of the ``which path'' information in a two-channel wave scattering. The field structure for the reflected/refracted beam is analyzed. In the scattering of a linearly-polarized beam, photons of opposite helic…
We theoretically investigate the electromagnetic response of a novel class of multi-layered metamaterials obtained by alternating graphene sheets and dielectric layers, the whole structure not exhibiting a plane of reflection symmetry along the stacking direction. We show that the electromagnetic response of the structure is characterized by a magneto-electric coupling described by an effective chiral parameter. Exploiting the intrinsic tunability of the graphene-light coupling, we prove that one can tune both the dielectric and the chiral electromagnetic response by varying the graphene chemi…
In this paper the interface between two transformation media or between a transformation medium and vacuum is studied. Strictly from the transformation optics point of view the consequences of the boundary conditions at such interfaces are addressed in two different ways. First, we analyze a restricted class of reflectionless interfaces, for which the tools of transformation optics allow to describe the electromagnetic fields on both sides of the interface by means of the same vacuum solution of the Maxwell equations. In a second step, we examine interfaces between two arbitrary transformation…
We propose an effective route to fully control the phase of plane waves reflected from electrically (optically) thin sheets. This becomes possible using engineered artificial full-reflection layers (metamirrors) as arrays of electrically small resonant bi-anisotropic particles. In this scenario, fully reflecting mirrors do not contain any continuous ground plane, but only arrays of small particles. Bi-anisotropic omega coupling is required to get asymmetric response in reflection phase for plane waves incident from the opposite sides of the composite mirror. It is shown that with this concept …
Grazing incidence waves incident onto a surface will almost always be completely reflected. Here, we focus on removing reflection at grazing incidence, adopting the factorisation method from quantum mechanics and applying it to the Helmholtz equation that governs a single electromagnetic polarisation. We show that there are two approaches, the first is to require real dielectric profiles that support a half-bound state at grazing incidence. The second is to allow non-Hermitian dielectric profiles that exhibit PT symmetry, supporting waves with constant intensity throughout the profile.
Theoretical study of arrays of graphene ribbons is currently of high interest due to its potential application in beam splitters, absorbers, and polarizers. In this paper, an analytical method is presented for diffraction analysis of graphene ribbon arrays. Previous analytical studies were carried out in the regime where the lateral separation between the ribbons is much smaller than the wavelength of the incident wave. As such, they could not be used to calculate the reflection coefficients of higher diffracted orders. By contrast, the method proposed here can predict electromagnetic response…
We demonstrate a controllable electromagnetic wave reflector/absorber for different polarizations with metamaterial involving electromagnetic resonant structures coupled with diodes. Through biasing at different voltages to turn ON and OFF the diodes, we are able to switch the structure between nearly total reflection and total absorption of a particularly polarized incident wave. By arranging orthogonally orientated resonant cells, the metamaterial can react to different polarized waves by selectively biasing the corresponding diodes. Both numerical simulations and microwave measurements have…
In an electromagnetic cloak based on a transformation approach, reduced sets of material properties are generally favored due to their easier implementation in reality, although a seemingly inevitable drawback of undesired reflection exists in such cloaks. Here we suggest using high-order transformations to create smooth moduli at the outer boundary of the cloak, therefore completely eliminating the detrimental scattering within the limit of geometric optics. We apply this scheme to a non-magnetic cylindrical cloak and demonstrate that the scattered field is reduced substantially in a cloak wi…

For transmissive applications of electromagnetic metasurfaces, an array of subwavelength Huygens' metaatoms are typically used to eliminate reflection and achieve a high transmission power efficiency together with a wide transmission phase coverage. We show that the underlying principle of low reflection and full control over transmission is asymmetric scattering into the specular reflection and transmission directions that results from a superposition of symmetric and anti-symmetric scattering components, with Huygens' meta-atoms being one example configuration. Available for oblique illumina…
Graded index media whose electric susceptibility satisfies the spatial Kramers-Kronig relations are known to be one-way reflectionless to electromagnetic radiation, for all angles of incidence. We demonstrate how a family of these media, in addition to being reflectionless, also have negligible transmission. To this end, we discuss how the transmission coefficient for the propagation of waves through a medium whose permittivity is built from poles in the complex position plane, with residues that sum to infinity, can be controlled by tuning the positions and residues of the poles. In particula…
Energy of propagating electromagnetic waves can be fully absorbed in a thin lossy layer, but only in a narrow frequency band, as follows from the causality principle. On the other hand, it appears that there are no fundamental limitations on broadband matching of thin absorbing layers. However, known thin absorbers produce significant reflections outside of the resonant absorption band. In this paper we explore possibilities to realize a thin absorbing layer which produces no reflected waves in a very wide frequency range, while the transmission coefficient has a narrow peak of full absorption…
We show that the optical properties of an oblique layered system with two kinds of isotropic materials can be described using the concept of transformation media as long as the thickness of the layers is much smaller than the wavelength. Once the connection with transformation media is established, we then show that oblique layered system can serve as a universal element to build a variety of interesting functional optical components such as wave splitters, wave combiners, one-dimensional cloaking devices and reflectionless field rotators.
We investigate theoretically electromagnetic plane-wave scattering by self-complementary metasurfaces. By using Babinet's principle extended to metasurfaces with resistive elements, we show that the frequency-independent transmission and reflection are realized for normal incidence of a circularly polarized plane wave onto a self-complementary metasurface, even if there is diffraction. Next, we consider two special classes of self-complementary metasurfaces. We show that self-complementary metasurfaces with rotational symmetry can act as coherent perfect absorbers, and those with translational…
The electromagnetic properties of an extremely thin metallic checkerboard drastically change from resonant reflection (transmission) to resonant transmission (reflection) when the local electrical conductivity at the interconnection points of the checkerboard is switched. To date, such critical transitions of metasurfaces have been applied only when they have 4-fold rotational symmetry, and their application to polarization control, which requires anisotropy, has been unexplored. To overcome this applicability limitation and open up new pathways for dynamic deep-subwavelength polarization cont…
It is shown that for thin metallic films thickness of which does not exceed thickness of skin layer, the problem allows analytical solution. In the field of resonant frequencies the analysis of dependence of coefficients of transmission, reflection and absorbtion on an electromagnetic wave is carried out. Dependence on pitch angle, thickness of the layer and coefficient of specular reflection and on effective electron collision frequency is carried out. The formula for contactless determination (calculation) of a thickness of a film by observable resonant frequencies is deduced.
Electromagnetic waves at grazing incidence onto a planar medium are analogous to zero energy quantum particles incident onto a potential well. In this limit waves are typically completely reflected. Here we explore dielectric profiles supporting optical analogues of `half-bound states', allowing for zero reflection at grazing incidence. To obtain these profiles we use two different theoretical approaches: supersymmetric quantum mechanics, and direct inversion of the Helmholtz equation.
We inspect the optical properties of dissipative double-negative metamaterials (DNMM) and find explicit expression for the total reflection angle and the correct Fresnel formulae describing the reflection and refraction for the DNMM at the oblique incident of the electromagnetic wave on the interface for \textit{TE} as well as \textit{TM} electromagnetic wave polarization. The reflectivity and transmissivity of DNMM film embedded in a positive refraction index (PIM) surrounding are presented and discussed.
The basic laws of geometrical optics can be deduced from energy-momentum conservation for electromagnetic waves, without other wave concepts. However, the concept of quanta is required; it arises naturally, hence such a hypothesis could have arisen earlier than it did historically. Measurements to determine the angles of reflection and refraction demand that each incident quantum be either reflected or refracted; such a separation is central to the experimental results.
An alternative way of visualizing electromagnetic waves in matter and of deriving the Finite Difference Time Domain method (FDTD) for simulating Maxwell's equations for one dimensional systems is presented. The method uses d'Alembert's splitting of waves into forward and backward pulses of arbitrary shape and allows for grid spacing and material properties that vary with position. Constant velocity of waves in dispersionless dielectric materials, partial reflection and transmission at boundaries between materials with different indices of refraction, and partial reflection, transmission, and a…
We experimentally demonstrate dressed multi-wave mixing (MWM) and the reflection of the probe beam due to electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) grating can coexist in a five-level atomic ensemble. The reflection is derived from the photonic band gap (PBG) of EIA grating, which is much broader than the PBG of EIT grating. Therefore, EIA-type PBG can reflect more energy from probe than EIT-type PBG does, which can effectively affect the MWM signal. The EIA-type as well as EIT-type PBG can be controlled by multiple parameters including the frequency detunings, propagation angles and powers…
We point out that electromagnetic one-way edge modes analogous to quantum Hall edge states, originally predicted by Raghu and Haldane in 2D gyroelectric photonic crystals possessing Dirac point-derived bandgaps, can appear in more general settings. In particular, we show that the TM modes in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal can be formally mapped to electronic wavefunctions in a periodic electromagnetic field, so that the only requirement for the existence of one-way edge modes is that the Chern number for all bands below a gap is non-zero. In a square-lattice gyromagnetic Yttrium-Iron-Garnet p…
Relating the electromagnetic scattering and absorption properties of an individual particle to the reflection and transmission coefficients of a two-dimensional material composed of these particles is a crucial concept that has driven both fundamental and applied physics. It is at the heart of both the characterization of material properties as well as the phase and amplitude engineering of a wave. Here we propose a multipolar description of the reflection and transmission coefficients across a monolayer of particles using a vector spherical harmonic decomposition. This enables us to provide a…
We consider a semi-infinite dielectric with multiple spatially dispersive resonances in the susceptibility. The effect of the boundary is described by an arbitrary reflection coefficient for polarization waves in the material at the surface, with specific values corresponding to various additional boundary conditions (ABCs) for Maxwell's equations. We derive exact expressions for the electromagnetic reflection and transmission coefficients and present the results for a variety of materials with multiple exciton bands. We find an improved single-band approximation for heavy/light exciton bands …
