A single mode electromagnetic resonator coupled to a two-level hybrid-quantum-dot(hQD) is studied theoretically as a laser(maser), when the hQD is driven out of equilibrium with external applied d.c. bias voltage. Using the formalism of the non-equilibrium Green's functions for the hQD and the semi-classical laser equations, we determine the relevant physical quantities of the system. We find that due to the resonant Andreev reflections and the formation of the Floquet-Andreev side-resonances in the sub-gap region, at appropriate gate voltages and above a certain threshold bias voltage and damping factor of the resonator, the two-level QD has non-zero gain spectrum and lasing can happen in the system in the frequency range of superconducting gap. Furthermore, our results show that depending on the damping factor of the resonator and above a specific threshold bias voltages, the lasing can be either due to single electron transitions or cascaded electron transitions between the Andreev resonances and Floquet-Andreev side-resonances.
We study a double quantum dot system coherently coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. By suitably biasing the system, a population inversion can be created between the dot levels. The resulting lasing state exists within a narrow resonance window, where the transport current correlates with the lasing state. It allows probing the lasing state via a current measurement. Moreover, the resulting narrow current peak opens perspective for applications of the setup for high resolution measurements.
We investigate a double quantum dot coupled to a transmission line resonator. By driving a current through the double dot, a population inversion between the dot levels can be created, and a lasing state of the radiation field is generated within a sharp resonance window. The transport current correlates with the lasing state. The sharp resonance condition allows for resolving small differences in the dot properties. Dissipative processes in the quantum dots and their effect on the lasing and transport behavior are investigated.
Single-electron tunneling processes through a double quantum dot can induce a lasing state in an electromagnetic resonator which is coupled coherently to the dot system. Here we study the noise properties of the transport current in the lasing regime, i.e., both the zero-frequency shot noise as well as the noise spectrum. The former shows a remarkable super-Poissonian behavior when the system approaches the lasing transition, but sub-Poissonian behavior deep in the lasing state. The noise spectrum contains information about the coherent dynamics of the coupled dot-resonator system. It shows pr…
We study a double quantum dot system coherently coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. A current through the dot system can create a population inversion in the dot levels and, within a narrow resonance window, a lasing state in the resonator. The lasing state correlates with the transport properties. On one hand, this allows probing the lasing state via a current measurement. On the other hand, the resulting narrow current peak allows resolving small differences in the dot properties, e.g., a small difference in the Zeeman splittings of the two dots. For realistic situations relaxation proc…
Planar microcavities with distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) host, besides confined optical modes, also mechanical resonances due to stop bands in the phonon dispersion relation of the DBRs. These resonances have frequencies in the sub-terahertz (10E10-10E11 Hz) range with quality factors exceeding 1000. The interaction of photons and phonons in such optomechanical systems can be drastically enhanced, opening a new route toward manipulation of light. Here we implemented active semiconducting layers into the microcavity to obtain a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). Thereby three …
We theoretically investigate the possibility of lasing in an electromagnetic resonator coupled to a voltage-biased hybrid double quantum dot comprised of a double quantum dot tunnel coupled simultaneously to a normal metal and a superconducting lead. Using a unitary transformation, we derive a resonator-double quantum dot interaction Hamiltonian in the rotating-wave approximation which reveals the fact that lasing in this system is mediated by electron transitions between Andreev energy levels in the system's density of states. Moreover, by employing a Markovian master equation incorporating d…
We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as {\it open} resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the appropiate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasi bound states (QBS) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBS are…

Inspired by recent experiments, we study a short superconducting junction of length $L\ll ξ$ (coherence length) inserted in a dc-SQUID containing an ancillary Josephson tunnel junction. We evaluate the nonequilibrium occupation of the Andreev bound states (ABS) for the case of a conventional junction and a topological junction, with the latter case of ABS corresponding to a Majorana mode. We take into account small phase fluctuations of the Josephson tunnel junction, acting as a damped LC resonator, and analyze the role of the distribution of the quasiparticles of the continuum assuming that t…
Motivated by recent experiments, which demonstrated lasing and cooling of the electromagnetic modes in a resonator coupled to a superconducting qubit, we describe the specific mechanisms creating the population inversion, and we study the spectral properties of these systems in the lasing state. Different levels of the theoretical description, i.e., the semi-classical and the semi-quantum approximation, as well as an analysis based on the full Liouville equation are compared. We extend the usual quantum optics description to account for strong qubit-resonator coupling and include the effects o…
We study the response of a magnetic-field-driven superconducting qubit strongly coupled to a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator. We observed a strong amplification/damping of a probing signal at different resonance points corresponding to a one and two-photon emission/absorption. The sign of the detuning between the qubit frequency and the probe determines whether amplification or damping is observed. The larger blue detuned driving leads to two-photon lasing while the larger red detuning cools the resonator. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical model o…
We investigate the strain-induced coupling between a nitrogen-vacancy impurity and a resonant vibrational mode of a diamond nanoresonator. We show that under near-resonant laser excitation of the electronic states of the impurity, this coupling can modify the state of the resonator and either cool the resonator close to the vibrational ground state or drive it into a large amplitude coherent state. We derive a semi-classical model to describe both effects and evaluate the stationary state of the resonator mode under various driving conditions. In particular, we find that by exploiting resonant…
We derive the photocount statistics of the radiation emitted from a chaotic laser resonator in the regime of single-mode lasing. Random spatial variations of the resonator eigenfunctions lead to strong mode-to-mode fluctuations of the laser emission. The distribution of the mean photocount over an ensemble of modes changes qualitatively at the lasing transition, and displays up to three peaks above the lasing threshold.
A pulse of light, injected into a weakly disordered dielectric medium, typically, will leave its initial location in a short time, by diffusion. However, due to some rare configurations of disorder, there is a possibility of formation of high quality resonators which can trap light for a long time. We present a rather detailed, quantitative study of such random resonators and of the "almost localized" states that they can support. After presenting a brief review of the earlier work on the subject, we concentrate on a detailed computation of the "prefactor": knowledge of the latter is crucial f…
The spatial formation of coherent random laser modes in strongly scattering disordered random media is a central feature in the understanding of the physics of random lasers. We derive a quantum field theoretical method for random lasing in disordered samples of complex amplifying Mie resonators which is able to provide self-consistently and free of any fit parameter the full set of transport characteristics at and above the laser phase transition. The coherence length and the correlation volume respectively is derived as an experimentally measurable scale of the phase transition at the laser …
We describe and characterize a microwave setup to probe the Andreev levels of a superconducting atomic contact. The contact is part of a superconducting loop inductively coupled to a superconducting coplanar resonator. By monitoring the resonator reflection coefficient close to its resonance frequency as a function of both flux through the loop and frequency of a second tone we perform spectroscopy of the transition between two Andreev levels of highly transmitting channels of the contact. The results indicate how to perform coherent manipulation of these states.
A metamaterial formed by superconducting circuits or quantum dots can serve as active lasing medium when coupled to a microwave resonator. For these artificial atoms, in contrast to real atoms, variations in their parameters cannot be avoided. In this paper, we examine the influence of disorder on such a multi-atom lasing setup. We find that the lasing process evolves into a self-organized stationary state that is quite robust against disorder. The reason is that photons created by those atoms which are in or close to resonance with the resonator stimulate the emission also of more detuned ato…
We implement externally excited ZnO Mie resonators in a framework of a generalized Hubbard Hamiltonian to investigate the lifetimes of excitons and exciton-polaritons out of thermodynamical equilibrium. Our results are derived by a Floquet-Keldysh-Green's formalism with Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) and a second order iterative perturbation theory solver (IPT). We find that the Fano resonance which originates from coupling of the continuum of electronic density of states to the semiconductor Mie resonator yields polaritons with lifetimes between 0.6 ps and 1.45 ps. These results are compa…
We study a single-level quantum dot strongly coupled to a superconducting lead and tunnel-coupled to a normal electrode which can exchange energy with a single-mode resonator. We show that a such system can sustain lasing characterized by a sub-Poissonian Fock-state distribution of the resonator. The lasing regime is clearly identifiable in the subgap transport regime: in the resonant case, the current is pinned to the maximum value achievable in this hybrid nanostructure.
We propose the new concept of a switchable multimode microlaser. As a generic, realistic model of a multimode microresonator a system of two coupled defects in a two-dimensional photonic crystal is considered. We demonstrate theoretically that lasing of the cavity into one selected resonator mode can be caused by injecting an appropriate optical pulse at the onset of laser action (injection seeding). Temporal mode-to-mode switching by re-seeding the cavity after a short cool-down period is demonstrated by direct numerical solution. A qualitative analytical explanation of the mode switching in …
Raman-based technologies have enabled many ground-breaking scientific discoveries related to surface science, single molecule chemistry and biology. For example, researchers have identified surface bound molecules by their Raman vibrational modes and demonstrated polarization-dependent Raman gain. However, a surface constrained Raman laser has yet to be demonstrated because of the challenges associated with achieving a sufficiently high photon population located at a surface to transition from spontaneous to stimulated Raman scattering. Here, advances in surface chemistry and in integrated pho…
A long phase coherent normal (N) wire between superconductors (S) is characterized by a dense phase dependent Andreev spectrum . We probe this spectrum in a high frequency phase biased configuration, by coupling an NS ring to a multimode superconducting resonator. We detect a dc flux and frequency dependent response whose dissipative and non dissipative components are related by a simple Debye relaxation law with a characteristic time of the order of the diffusion time through the N part of the ring. The flux dependence exhibits $h/2e$ periodic oscillations with a large harmonics content at te…
Motivated by recent experiments, which demonstrated lasing and cooling of the electromagnetic field in an electrical resonator coupled to a superconducting qubit, we study the phase coherence and diffusion of the system in the lasing state. We also discuss phase locking and synchronization induced by an additional {\sl ac} driving of the resonator. We extend earlier work to account for the strong qubit-resonator coupling and to include the effects of low-frequency qubit's noise. We show that the strong coupling may lead to a double peak structure of the spectrum, while the shape and width are …
In any quantum or wave system dissipation leads to decoherence. Therefore, it was surprising in first instance when experiments on strongly lossy random lasers showed unambiguously by measurements of the photon statistics and of the lasing mode volume that coherent feedback is possible in such systems3-5,8. In coherent-feedback lasers the photons form a far-from-equilibrium condensate in the sense that a single quantum state is occupied by a macroscopic number of photons15. We demonstrate that the lossy dynamics of random lasers alone imply a three dimensional finite lasing mode extent, thus r…
Spin-controlled lasers are highly interesting photonic devices and have been shown to provide ultra-fast polarization dynamics in excess of 200 GHz. In contrast to conventional semiconductor lasers their temporal properties are not limited by the intensity dynamics, but are governed primarily by the interaction of the spin dynamics with the birefringent mode splitting that determines the polarization oscillation frequency. Another class of modern semiconductor lasers are high-beta emitters which benefit from enhanced light-matter interaction due to strong mode confinement in low-mode-volume mi…
Coherent phonons can greatly vary light-matter interaction in semiconductor nanostructures placed inside an optical resonator on an ultrafast time scale. For an ensemble of quantum dots as active laser medium phonons are able to induce a large enhancement or attenuation of the emission intensity, as has been recently demonstrated. The physics of this coupled phonon-exciton-photon system consists of various effects, which in the experiment typically cannot be clearly separated, in particular because a rather complex strain pulse impinges on the quantum dot ensemble. Here we present a comprehens…
Two-dimensional (2D) laser arrays are shown to be achievable at a large scale by exploiting the interplay of higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) physics and the so-called non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). The higher-order topology allows for the amplification and hence lasing of a single-mode protected by a band gap; whereas the NHSE, widely known to accumulate population in a biased direction in non-Hermitian systems, is introduced to compete with the topological localization of corner modes. By tuning the system parameters appropriately and pumping at one site only, a single topologica…
We study a model which can describe a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET) or a double quantum dot coupled to transmission-line oscillator. In both cases the degree of freedom is given by a charged particle, which couples strongly to the electromagnetic environment or phonons. We consider the case where a lasing condition is established and study the dependence of the average photon number in the resonator on the spectral function of the electromagnetic environment. We focus on three important cases: a strongly coupled environment with a small cut-off frequency, a structured envir…
By coupling a superconducting weak link to a microwave resonator, recent experiments probed the spectrum and achieved the quantum manipulation of Andreev states in various systems. However, the quantitative understanding of the response of the resonator to changes in the occupancy of the Andreev levels, which are of fermionic nature, is missing. Here, using Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to describe the weak link and a general formulation of the coupling to the resonator, we calculate the shift of the resonator frequency as a function of the levels occupancy and describe how transitions are in…
We theoretically propose optical phonon lasing in a double quantum dot (DQD) fabricated on a semiconductor substrate. No additional cavity or resonator is required. An electron in the DQD is found to be coupled to only two longitudinal optical phonon modes that act as a natural cavity. When the energy level spacing in the DQD is tuned to the phonon energy, the electron transfer is accompanied by the emission of the phonon modes. The resulting non-equilibrium motion of electrons and phonons is analyzed by the rate equation approach based on the Born-Markov-Secular approximation. We show that th…
We describe a simple hybrid superconductor$|$ferromagnetic-insulator structure manifesting spin-resolved Andreev bound states in which dynamic magnetization is employed to probe spin related physics. We show that, at low bias and below $T_c$, the transfer of spin angular momentum pumped by an externally driven ferromagnetic insulator is greatly affected by the formation of spin-resolved Andreev bound states. Our results indicate that these bound states capture the essential physics of condensate-facilitated spin flow. For finite thicknesses of the superconducting layer, comparable to the coher…
A semiclassical theory of single and multi-mode lasing is derived for open complex or random media using a self-consistent linear response formulation. Unlike standard approaches which use closed cavity solutions to describe the lasing modes, we introduce an appropriate discrete basis of functions which describe also the intensity and angular emission pattern outside the cavity. This constant flux (CF) basis is dictated by the Green function which arises when formulating the steady state Maxwell-Bloch equations as a self-consistent linear response problem. This basis is similar to the quasi-bo…
We study the dynamical multistability of a solid-state single-atom laser implemented in a quantum-dot spin valve. The system is formed by a resonator that interacts with a two-level system in a dot in contact with two ferromagnetic leads of antiparallel polarization. We show that a spin-polarized current provides high-efficiency pumping leading to regimes of multistable lasing, in which the Fock distribution of the oscillator displays a multi-peaked distribution. The emergence of multistable lasing follows from the breakdown of the usual rotating-wave approximation for the coherent spin-resona…
Motivated by recent ``circuit QED'' experiments we study the lasing transition and spectral properties of single-qubit lasers. In the strong coupling, low-temperature regime quantum fluctuations dominate over thermal noise and strongly influence the linewidth of the laser. When the qubit and the resonator are detuned, amplitude and phase fluctuations of the radiation field are coupled, and the phase diffusion model, commonly used to describe conventional lasers, fails. We predict pronounced effects near the lasing transition, with an enhanced linewidth and non-exponential decay of the correlat…
Superconducting qubits coupled to electric or nanomechanical resonators display effects previously studied in quantum electrodynamics (QED) and extensions thereof. Here we study a driven qubit coupled to a low-frequency tank circuit with particular emphasis on the role of dissipation. When the qubit is driven to perform Rabi oscillations, with Rabi frequency in resonance with the oscillator, the latter can be driven far from equilibrium. Blue detuned driving leads to a population inversion in the qubit and lasing behavior of the oscillator ("single-atom laser"). For red detuning the qubit cool…
We study the ground-state cooling of a mechanical oscillator linearly coupled to the charge of a quantum dot inserted between a normal metal and a superconducting contact. Such a system can be realized, e.g., by a suspended carbon nanotube quantum dot with a capacitive coupling to a gate contact. Focusing on the subgap transport regime, we analyze the inelastic Andreev reflections which drive the resonator to a nonequilibrium state. For small coupling, we obtain that vibration-assisted reflections can occur through two distinct interference paths. The interference determines the ratio between …
Halide perovskites are a promising optical gain media with high tunability and simple solution synthesis. In this study, two gain regimes, namely amplified spontaneous emission and random lasing, are demonstrated in same MAPbBr$_3$ halide perovskite single crystal. For this, photoluminescence is measured at a temperature of 4 K with pulsed femtosecond pumping by UV light with a 80 MHz repetition rate. Random lasing is observed in areas of the sample where a random resonator was formed due to cracks and crystal imperfections. In more homogeneous regions of the sample, the dominant regime is amp…
The optical hybridization of the electronic states in strongly coupled molecule-cavity systems have revealed unique properties such as lasing, room temperature polariton condensation, and the modification of excited electronic landscapes involved in molecular isomerization. Here we show that molecular vibrational modes of the electronic ground state can also be coherently coupled with a micro-cavity mode at room temperature, given the low vibrational thermal occupation factors associated with molecular vibrations, and the collective coupling of a large ensemble of molecules immersed within the…
Two-dimensional semiconductors have emerged as a new class of materials for nanophotonics for their strong exciton-photon interaction and flexibility for engineering and integration. Taking advantage of these properties, we engineer an efficient lasing medium based on dipolar interlayer excitons, in rotationally aligned atomically thin heterostructures. Lasing is measured from a transition metal dichalcogenide hetero-bilayer integrated in a silicon nitride grating resonator. A sharp increase in the spatial coherence of the emission was observed across the lasing threshold. The work establishes…
Hybrid quantum dot-oscillator systems have become attractive platforms to inspect quantum coherence effects at the nanoscale. Here, we investigate a Cooper-pair splitter setup consisting of two quantum dots, each linearly coupled to a local resonator. The latter can be realized either by a microwave cavity or a nanomechanical resonator. Focusing on the subgap regime, we demonstrate that cross-Andreev reflection, through which Cooper pairs are split into both dots, can efficiently cool down simultaneously both resonators into their ground state. Moreover, we show that a nonlocal heat transfer b…
Unlike conventional lasers, diffusive random lasers (DRLs) have no resonator to trap light and no high-Q resonances to support lasing. Due to this lack of sharp resonances the DRL has presented a challenge to conventional laser theory. We present a theory able to treat the DRL rigorously, and provide results on the lasing spectra, internal fields and output intensities of DRLs. Typically DRLs are highly multimode lasers, emitting light at a number of wavelengths. We show that the modal interactions through the gain medium in such lasers are extremely strong and lead to a uniformly spaced frequ…
Cavity optomechanical phenomena, such as cooling, amplification or optomechanically induced transparency, emerge due to a strong imbalance in the dissipation rates of the parametrically coupled electromagnetic and mechanical resonators. Here we analyze the reversed dissipation regime where the mechanical energy relaxation rate exceeds the energy decay rate of the electromagnetic cavity. We demonstrate that this regime allows for mechanically-induced amplification (or cooling) of the electromagnetic mode. Gain, bandwidth, and added noise of this electromagnetic amplifier are derived and compare…
Luminescence intensity autocorrelation (LIA) is employed to investigate coupling dynamics between (In,Ga)As QDs and a high-Q (~7000) resonator with ultrafast time resolution (150 fs), below and above the lasing threshold at T = 5 K. For QDs resonant and non-resonant with the cavity we observe both a six-fold enhancement and a 0.77 times reduction of the spontaneous emission rate, respectively. In addition, LIA spectroscopy reveals the onset of coherent coupling at the lasing threshold through qualitative changes in the dynamic behavior and a tripling of the resonant QD emission rate.
Two basic physical models, a two-level system and a harmonic oscillator, are realized on the mesoscopic scale as coupled qubit and resonator. The realistic system includes moreover the electronics for controlling the distance between the qubit energy levels and their populations and to read out the resonator's state, as well as the unavoidable dissipative environment. Such rich system is interesting both for the study of fundamental quantum phenomena on the mesoscopic scale and as a promising system for future electronic devices. We present recent results for the driven superconducting qubit-r…
