The low-frequency electric microfield distribution in a Coulomb plasma is calculated for various plasma parameters, from weak to strong Coulomb coupling and from zero to strong electron screening. Two methods of numerical calculations are employed: the adjustable-parameter exponential approximation and the Monte Carlo simulation. The results are represented by analytic fitting formulas suitable for applications.
The distribution of the electric microfield at a charged particle moving in a two-component plasma is calculated. The theoretical approximations are obtained via the parameter integration technique and using the screened pair approximation for the generalized radial distribution function. It is shown that the two-component plasma microfield distribution shows a larger probability of high microfield values than the corresponding distribution of the commonly used OCP model. The theory is checked by quasiclassical molecular-dynamics simulations. For the simulations a corrected Kelbg pseudopotenti…
The electric microfield distribution at charged particles is studied for two-component electron-ion plasmas using molecular dynamics simulation and theoretical models. The particles are treated within classical statistical mechanics using an electron-ion Coulomb potential regularized at distances less than the de Broglie length to take into account the quantum-diffraction effects. The potential-of-mean-force (PMF) approximation is deduced from a canonical ensemble formulation. The resulting probability density of the electric microfield satisfies exactly the second-moment sum rule without the …
The spectral line shapes for hydrogen-like heavy ion emitters embedded in strongly correlated two-component electron-ion plasmas are investigated with numerical simulations. For that purpose the microfield fluctuations are calculated by molecular dynamics simulations where short range quantum effects are taken into account by using a regularized Coulomb potential for the electron-ion interaction. The microfield fluctuations are used as input in a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for the radiating electron. In distinction to the standard impact and quasistatic appr…
In the present paper we introduce a full and closed system of atomic kinetic equations on fractions of atomic energy levels taking into account the effect of the plasma ions electric microfield mixing dynamics. The system of equations that we present is deduced from a full quantum multi-atomic states density matrix master equation. The analytical derivation of this atomic kinetic system of equations is based on the introduction of a new hierarchy chain of equations involving a new set of statistical atomic variables. The final system of atomic kinetic equations is obtained by introducing relat…
In the present paper we give numerical estimations of the plasma ion electric microfield mixing dynamics rate. This rate was deduced from a quantum atomic density matrix formalism and corresponds to the mixing dynamics effect of energy levels by the plasma ion electric microfield. The rate in question is to be added to the usual collisional-radiative model for the modeling of dielectronic satellites originating from multi-excited atomic configurations to diagnose high density plasma regimes generated by the interaction of X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL's) with solid density matter. The obtai…
The electric microfield distribution (MFD) at an impurity ion is studied for two-component (TCP) electron-ion plasmas using molecular dynamics simulation and theoretical models. The particles are treated within classical statistical mechanics using an electron-ion Coulomb potential regularized at distances less than the de Broglie length to take into account quantum-diffraction effects. Corrections to the potential-of-mean-force exponential (PMFEX) approximation recently proposed for MFD in a strongly coupled TCP [Phys. Rev. E 72, 036403 (2005)] are obtained and discussed. This has been done b…
We present a general expression for the probability distribution function of electric field in a plasma cloud formed by the impact of a laser pulse on a gas or a solid body. We also present the results of numerical calculation of this function for the case of non-interacting particles depending on the plasma cloud size. It takes into account the ionic microfield and the macrofield arising from the charge imbalance. As the charge imbalance increases, the effect of a sharp increase in the distribution function for large field values is observed. Good agreement between the calculation of the shif…
In the present paper we propose the use of desnity matrix formalism for the calculation of the atomic spectroscopic properties of autoionizing states in dense plasmas, i.e. warm dense matter and strongly coupled plasmas. This is motivated by the importance of taking into account the effect of the electric microfield generated by the plasma charge constituents in the calculation of the atomic populations of autoionizing states. For autoionizing states, electron densities justifying the statistical approach exceed solid density bringing serious doubts to the statistical approach even in dense pl…
In the present paper we propose to update the standard calculation of Stark line profiles for autoionizing atomic states in dense plasmas, i.e. warm dense matter and strongly coupled plasmas. This is motivated by the importance of taking into account the effect of the electric microfield generated by the plasma charge constituents in the calculation of the atomic populations of autoionizing states which leads to the modification of the calculation of Stark line profiles in the frame of the standard theory. This is due to the properties of the autoionizing atomic states that are far from Boltzm…
A general formulation is developed to demonstrate that atomic autoionizing (AI) resonances are broadened and shifted significantly due to plasma effects across bound-free continua. The theoretical and computational method presented accounts for broadening mechanisms: electron collisional, ion microfields (Stark), thermal Doppler, core excitations, and free-free transitions. {\it Extrinsic} plasma broadening redistributes and shifts AI resonance strengths while broadly preserving naturally {\it intrinsic} asymmetries of resonance profiles. Integrated oscillator strengths are conserved as resona…

The paper presents a relativistic mechanism that can create a poloidal non-uniformity of a radial electric field on a magnetic surface in a tokamak plasma. This mechanism is associated with a significant current velocity of electrons in plasma for many experimental modes of tokamak operations. It is important that electric fields arise without the traditional separation of charges in plasma. The presented mechanism can explain the previously experimentally measured poloidal non-uniformity of the C+6 carbon ion toroidal rotation velocity in the TORE-SUPRA tokamak plasma
Electric fields in a plasma that conducts a high-current pulse are measured as a function of time and space. The experiment is performed using a coaxial configuration, in which a current rising to 160 kA in 100 ns is conducted through a plasma that prefills the region between two coaxial electrodes. The electric field is determined using laser spectroscopy and line-shape analysis. Plasma doping allows for 3D spatially resolved measurements. The measured peak magnitude and propagation velocity of the electric field is found to match those of the Hall electric field, inferred from the magnetic-f…

The current-driven electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) instability is studied in presence of a transverse dc electric fields in a collisional magnetized dusty plasma. We derive the appropriate charging equation self consistently by using the Vlasov equation.
A relation between physical consequences of the so-called Ehrenfest's Paradox and the radial electric field in the classical quasi-neutral tokamak plasma is shown. Basic author's approach to the relativistic nature of the tokamak has been described in [1]. The experiment which can resolve the Ehrenfest's Paradox is presented.
A new physical mechanism of the parallel acceleration of a turbulent magnetized plasma is discovered by using a Fokker-Planck phase space stochastic transport equation. It is found that the random walk of a charged particle is correlated with the random change of the parallel velocity due to the radial electric field and the magnetic moment conservation. This correlation leads to a parallel acceleration of the plasma with a finite parallel fluid flow.
Temporal evolution of the inhomogeneous energy density driven instability (IEDDI) is examined in presence of a nonuniform transverse dc electric field in collisional magnetized plasma cylinder. Using experimentally known parameters relevant to IEDDI, we have estimated the growth rate for $ν$=1, 2 and 3 nonlocal eigenmodes.

The benefits of thermionic emission from negatively biased electrodes for perpendicular electric field control in a magnetized plasma are examined through its combined effects on the sheath and on the plasma potential variation along magnetic field lines. By increasing the radial current flowing through the plasma thermionic emission is confirmed to improve control over the plasma potential at the sheath edge compared to the case of a cold electrode. Conversely, thermionic emission is shown to be responsible for an increase of the plasma potential drop along magnetic field lines in the quasi-n…
A solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained for a magnetized plasma with non-degenerate electrons and ions by Chapman-Enskog method. To obtain an approximate solution, the Sonine polynomials up to the third-order approximation are used. Fully ionized plasma is considered. We obtained more accurately the components for the diffusion, thermal diffusion and diffusion thermoeffect tensors in comparison with previous publications on this subject.
Chaotic electromagnetic fields are common in many relativistic plasma environments, where they can be excited by instabilities on kinetic spatial scales. When strong electric fluctuations exist on sub-electron scales, they may lead to small-angle, stochastic deflections of the electrons' pitch-angles. Under certain conditions, this closely resembles the effect of Coulomb collisions in collisional plasmas. The electric pitch-angle diffusion coefficient acts as an effective collision -- or "quasi-collision" -- frequency. We show that quasi-collisions may radically alter the expected radiative tr…
The calculation presented in "Rotation Velocities and Radial Electric Field in the Plasma Edge" by W. M. Stacey [Contrib. Plasma Phys. 46, (2006)] contains an inconsistent treatment of the electrostatic potential. Comparing the expressions for the potential associated with the radial electrostatic field with that associated with the poloidal electrostatic field reveals the inconsistency. A field-theoretic perspective implies that the electrostatic field must vanish in a model based upon the physics of a neutral, conducting fluid.
The Hall effect, defined as the separation of electric charges of opposite sign when they move in a magnetic field, is suggested to contribute substantially to the observed negative radial electric field Er in the core plasma in tokamaks and, respectively, to the spontaneous/intrinsic rotation of plasma. A simple way to evaluate the Hall effect contribution to the Er value, using the independently measured space distributions of magnetic field and plasma rotation velocity, is suggested. The estimates of the effect for experimental data from the TM-4 and T-10 tokamaks suggest that the above phe…
Electric field measurement in plasmas permits quantitative comparison between the experiment and the simulation in this study. An electro-optic (EO) sensor based on Pockels effect is demonstrated to measure wave electric fields in the laboratory magnetosphere of the RT-1 device with high frequency heating sources. This system gives the merits that electric field measurements can detect electrostatic waves separated clearly from wave magnetic fields, and that the sensor head is separated electrically from strong stray fields in circumference. The electromagnetic waves are excited at the double …
In natural and laboratory magnetized plasmas, an equilibrium electric field may exist perpendicular to the background magnetic field. In such a situation all the plasma species experience a common drift and the unperturbed distribution functions have a common shift in velocity space. In this work the susceptibility tensor is first derived in the laboratory frame for such a situation using the commonly used method of integration along unperturbed trajectory. Then the Lorentz transformation method is adopted to verify the results. As an application we give an analysis of the waves propagating pa…
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs - long tubular carbon nanostructures) belong to the best electron field emitting materials. Based on the experimentally determined electron density in the dual hot filament/DC plasma deposition system the electric field close to the substrate and ion energy flux were calculated. The dependences of electric characteristics close to the nanotube tips on various geometric and plasma parameters were numerically investigated. Taking into account the field enhancement in the vicinity of the CNTs tips the force acting on them was determined. The reliability of numeric computati…
Classical plasma with arbitrary degree of degeneration of electronic gas is considered. In plasma N (N>2) collinear electromagnatic waves are propagated. It is required to find the response of plasma to these waves. Distribution function in square-law approximation on quantities of two small parameters from Vlasov equation is received. The formula for electric current calculation is deduced. It is demonstrated that the nonlinearity account leads to occurrence of the longitudinal electric current directed along a wave vector. This longitudinal current is orthogonal to the known transversal curr…
The electrostatic model proposed by Poulos [Phys. Plasmas (2019), $\mathbf{26}$, 022104] to describe the electric potential distribution across and along a magnetized plasma column is used to shed light onto the ability to control perpendicular electric fields. The effective electrical connection between facing end-electrodes is shown to be conditioned upon the smallness of a dimensionless parameter $τ$ function of the plasma column aspect ratio and the square root of the conductivity ratio $σ_\perp/σ_{\parallel}$. The analysis of a selected set of past end-electrodes biasing experiments confi…

During the initial phase of microwave (MW) power launch inside a MW discharge ion source (MDIS), plasma and the electric fields are evolved with time together in the plasma volume. The spatio-temporal evolution pattern in the cavity of a MDIS is reported here, highlighting the role of these electric fields on power coupling processes. Evolution of electric field and so power coupling processes are calculated using Finite Element Method (FEM). Unlike PIC/MCC or hybrid fluid, here FEM model uses time dependent Poisson solver through drift-diffusion approach. In presence of plasma gradient in the…
We present a detailed analysis of electron trajectories within the sheath regions of capacitively coupled plasmas excited by radio-frequency voltage waveforms at low pressures. Complex features inside the sheaths are identified in several physical quantities, which are sculptured by the trajectories of the bouncing electrons under the influence of the spatio-temporally varying electric field. A method is developed to explain the generation of the various features as a function of surface processes and to identify the trajectories of electrons of different origin.
By combining the results from a self-consistent 2D dusty plasma fluid model and a 3D N-body code, the equilibrium position and crystal structure were determined for dust particles levitated in the sheath in a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell, in which the lower electrode was heated or cooled. The Debye length, charge and electric field were reconstructed on a sub-millimeter scale by applying a previously developed, independent method. However, this method seems to overestimate the charge, and hence underestimate the electric field. Even corrected for this fact, the …
The traditional generalized Ohm's law in MHD do not explicitly present the relation of electric currents and electric fields in fully ionized plasma, and lead to some unexpected concepts, such as "the magnetic frozen-in plasma", magnetic reconnection etc. In the present paper, we solve the balance equation can give exact solution of the velocities of electrons and ions, and then derived the electric current in fully ionized plasma. In the case ignoring boundary condition, there is no electric current in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field when external forces are ignored. The electri…
The dispersion equation, describing the instability development of vortex turbulence excitation in cylindrical plasma in crossed radial electric and axial magnetic fields with taking into account the longitudinal inhomogeneity and finite time of leaving of plasma electrons and ions from the system, has been derived. It is shown that the finite length of system time and finite time of system leaving of plasma electrons and ions leads to the appearance of the instability threshold and to decrease of growth rate of its development.
The ion-drag force on a spherical dust particle immersed in a flowing plasma with external electric field is self-consistently calculated using the Particle In Cell code SCEPTIC in the entire range of charge-exchange collisionality. Our results, not based on questionable approximations, extend prior analytic calculations valid only in a few limiting regimes. Particular attention is given to the force direction, shown never to be directed opposite to the flow except in the continuum limit, where other forces are of much stronger magnitude.
Boozer addressed the role of magnetic helicity in dynamos [Phys Fluids \textbf{B},(1993)]. He pointed out that the magnetic helicity conservation implies that the dynamo action is more easily attainable if the electric potential varies over the surface of the dynamo. This provided us with motivation to investigate dynamos in Riemannian curved surfaces [Phys Plasmas \textbf{14}, (2007);\textbf{15} (2008)]. Thiffeault and Boozer [Phys Plasmas (2003)] discussed the onset of dissipation in kinematic dynamos. When curvature is constant and negative, a simple simple laminar dynamo solution is obtain…
We present a self-consistent kinetic description of an electron-positron-photon ($e^-e^+γ$) plasma generated from vacuum in a focal spot of counterpropagating laser pulses. We rely on a model of purely time-dependent external electric field, but properly take into account quantum radiation from plasma, as well as the semiclassical internal (plasma) field. To achieve this goal we derive a system of coupled kinetic equations for the electron, positron, and photon plasma species supplemented with Maxwell equation for the internal electric field. Quantum radiation is included systematically by tak…

Propagation of charged particle beams in background plasma as a method of space charge neutralization has been shown to achieve a high degree of charge and current neutralization and therefore enables nearly ballistic propagation and focusing of charged particle beams. Correspondingly, use of plasmas for propagation of charged particle beams has important applications for transport and focusing of intense particle beams in inertial fusion and high energy density laboratory plasma physics. However, the streaming of beam ions through a background plasma can lead to development of the two-stream …

A two-dimensional dust crystal levitated in the sheath of a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell is manipulated by heating or cooling the lower electrode. The dust charge is obtained by measuring global characteristics of the levitated crystal obtained from top-view pictures. From the force balance, the electric field in the sheath is reconstructed. From the Bohm criterion, we conclude that the dust crystal is levitated mainly above and just below the classical Bohm point.
Formulas for transversal conductance and dielectric permeability (dielectric function) in quantum Maxwell collisional plasma are deduced. The kinetic equation with collision integral in the form relaxation type is used.
A two-dimensional dust crystal levitated in the sheath of a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell is manipulated by heating or cooling the lower electrode. The dust charge is obtained from top-view pictures of the crystal using a previously developed analytical model. By assuming a simple force balance, and measuring the radial confining force, the vertical electric field profile in the sheath is reconstructed. The dust crystal is shown to levitate on the plasma side of the Bohm point. Finally, it is shown that the ion drag plays an important role in the vertical force b…
Low-collisionality stellarator plasmas usually display a large negative radial electric field that has been expected to cause accumulation of impurities due to their high charge number. In this paper, two combined effects that can potentially modify this scenario are discussed. First, it is shown that, in low collisionality plasmas, the kinetic contribution of the electrons to the radial electric field can make it negative but small, bringing the plasma close to impurity temperature screening (i.e., to a situation in which the ion temperature gradient is the main drive of impurity transport an…

For this purpose the kinetic Shrödinger - Boltzmann equation with collision integral of relaxation type in momentum space is applied. The case of degenerate Fermi plasma is allocated and investigated. The special case of frequency of collisions proportional to the module of a wave vector is considered. The low-frequency instability of a cylindrical poorly magnetized plasma with an inward-directed radial electric field is studied changing the gas pressure and the ion cyclotron frequency. The unstable frequency always decreases when the gas pressure is increased indicating collisional effects. At a fixed pressure, the unstable frequency increases with the magnetic field when the B-field is low and decreases at larger magnetic field strength. We find that the transition between these two regimes is obtained when the ion cyclotron frequency equals the ion-neutrals collision frequency. This is in…
In a recent paper (Phys. Plasmas 25, 061203, 2018), the authors have presented the analysis of the electric ion drift velocity experienced by heavy ions created in a plasma submitted to a low magnetic field. Unfortunately, they have used the classical ExB drift formula that is valid only in slab geometry. The authors have not taken into account that the cylindrical geometry induces a slow electric drift of the ions around the axis of the column. Moreover, the low magnetization of the ions induces a Larmor radius that is larger than the diameter of the plasma column. The movement of the ions im…
The collisional dynamics of test impurity ions in spherical tokamak plasmas with strongly-sheared radial electric fields is investigated by means of a test particle full orbit simulation code. The strength of the shear is such that the standard drift ordering can no longer be assumed and a full orbit approach is required. The effect of radial electric field shear on neoclassical particle transport is quantified for a range of test particle mass and charge numbers and electric field parameters. It is shown that the effect of a sheared electric field is to enhance the confinement of impurity spe…

We consider the possibility of formation of a superconductivity state either in a semiconductor or in a electron-hole plasma with the degenerate electrons due to the attractive forces between the electrons as a result of the exchange effects through the electron-hole sound wave by analogy to the phonon waves in a solid state. We have determined the view of an interaction potential between two electrons in a degenerate electron-hole plasma. The potential appears to be attractive at distances large than the Debye radius and decreases as $1/r^3$. We discuss the conditions at which the bound elect…
