In experimental study of very high Reynolds number turbulence, we found evidences that there are distinguished vortex structures in the intermediate range, that is, between the Kolmogorov and Taylor microscales, where they are indeed expected to be present. These structures are responsible for the intermittency, and, in the same time, they contribute into asymmetry of turbulent statistics, the latter following from the Kolmogorov law.
The streamwise and transverse velocities are measured simultaneously in isotropic grid turbulence at relatively high Reynolds numbers, Re(lambda) = 110-330. Using a conditional averaging technique, we extract typical intermittency patterns, which are consistent with velocity profiles of a model for a vortex tube, i.e., Burgers vortex. The radii of the vortex tubes are several of the Kolmogorov length regardless of the Reynolds number. Using the distribution of an interval between successive enhancements of a small-scale velocity increment, we study the spatial distribution of vortex tubes. The…
The elementary structures of turbulence, i.e., vortex tubes, are studied using velocity data obtained in laboratory experiments for boundary layers and duct flows at microscale Reynolds numbers 332-1934. While past experimental studies focused on intense vortex tubes, the present study focuses on all vortex tubes with various intensities. We obtain the mean velocity profile. The radius scales with the Kolmogorov length. The circulation velocity scales with the Kolmogorov velocity, in contrast to the case of intense vortex tubes alone where the circulation velocity scales with the rms velocity …
Motivated by recent experimental and computational results concerning the three-dimensional structure of vortices behind a vortex shedding flow meter [M. Reik et al., Forsch. Ingenieurwes. 74, 77 (2010)], we study the Strouhal-Reynolds number dependence in the vortex street in two dimensions behind a trapezoid-shaped object by employing two types of Frisch-Hasslacher-Pomeau (FHP) models. Our geometry is intended to reproduce the operation of the vortex shedding flow meter in a two-dimensional setting, thus preventing the formation of three-dimensional vortex structure. In particular, we check …
Numerical simulation results in recent years show that vortex-induced vibration (VIV) can occur at a subcritical Reynolds number. And the VIV has been observed numerically at Reynolds numbers as low as Re = 20. The current study presents an experimental evidence for the subcritical VIV of a cylinder. We designed and built a rotating channel that makes it possible to perform VIV experiments at subcritical Reynolds numbers. Based on the rotating channel, two sets of tests were carried out for fixed natural frequency with variable incoming flow speed and fixed incoming flow speed with variable na…
The most elementary structures of turbulence, i.e., vortex tubes, are studied using velocity data obtained in a laboratory experiment for boundary layers with microscale Reynolds numbers 295-1258. We conduct conditional averaging for enhancements of a small-scale velocity increment and obtain the typical velocity profile for vortex tubes. Their radii are of the order of the Kolmogorov length. Their circulation velocities are of the order of the root-mean-square velocity fluctuation. We also obtain the distribution of the interval between successive enhancements of the velocity increment as the…
In this work a simple problem on 2D optimal shape for body immersed in a viscous flow is analyzed. The body has geometrical constraints and its profile would be found in the class of cubics which satisfy those conditions. The optimal profile depends on the leading coefficient of these cubics and its relation with the Reynolds number of the system is found. The solution to the problem uses a method based on a suitable transformation rule for the cartesian reference.
A new Strouhal-Reynolds number relationship, $St=1/(A+B/Re)$, has been recently proposed based on observations of laminar vortex shedding from circular cylinders in a flowing soap film. Since the new $St$-$Re$ relation was derived from a general physical consideration, it raises the possibility that it may be applicable to vortex shedding from bodies other than circular ones. The work presented herein provides experimental evidence that this is the case. Our measurements also show that in the asymptotic limit ($Re\rightarrow\infty$), $St_{\infty}=1/A\simeq0.21$ is constant independent of rod s…
The energy extraction and vortex dynamics from the sinusoidal heaving and pitching motion of an elliptical hydrofoil is explored through large-eddy simulations (LES) at a Reynolds number of $50,000$. The LES is able to capture the time-dependent vortex shedding and dynamic stall properties of the foil as it undergoes high relative angles of attack. Results of the computations are validated against experimental flume data in terms of power extraction and leading edge vortex (LEV) position and trajectory. The kinematics for optimal efficiency are found in the range of heave amplitude $h_o/c=0.5-…
The vortex dynamics of laminar flow past a rectangular cavity is investigated using simulations and experiments. The flow is three-dimensional and characterized by a large, dominant vortex structure that fills most of the cavity at moderate Reynolds numbers with a weak, yet significant flow in the axial direction along the vortex core. Classical bubble-type vortex breakdown is observed within the cavity above a certain critical Reynolds number, which is a function of the channel width. The critical Reynolds number for the onset of breakdown is determined as a function of channel width, and the…
Direct numerical simulations of the Taylor-Green Vortex interacting with a hydrogen diffusion flame: Reynolds number and non-unity Lewis number effects
At high Reynolds number, the interaction between two vortex tubes leads to intense velocity gradients, which are at the heart of fluid turbulence. This vorticity amplification comes about through two different instability mechanisms of the initial vortex tubes, assumed anti-parallel and with a mirror plane of symmetry. At moderate Reynolds number, the tubes destabilize via a Crow instability, with the nonlinear development leading to strong flattening of the cores into thin sheets. These sheets then break down into filaments which can repeat the process. At higher Reynolds number, the instabil…
We present simulations of a circular cylinder undergoing vortex-induced vibration in-line with a free stream in conjunction with a theory for the fluid dynamics. Initially, it is shown that increasing the Reynolds number from 100 to 250 results in a 12-fold increase of the peak response amplitude at a fixed mass ratio of $m^*=5$. Subsequently, $m^*$ is varied from 2 up to 20 at a fixed Reynolds number of 180. The response amplitude as a function of the reduced velocity $U^*$ displays a single excitation region with peak amplitudes of approximately 1\% of the cylinder diameter, irrespectively o…
Hysteresis has been observed in a study of the transition between laminar flow and vortex shedding in a quasi-two dimensional system. The system is a vertical, rapidly flowing soap film which is penetrated by a rod oriented perpendicular to the film plane. Our experiments show that the transition from laminar flow to a periodic Kármán vortex street can be hysteretic, i.e. vortices can survive at velocities lower than the velocity needed to generate them.
Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) exists widely in natural and industrial fields. The main approaches for solving VIV problems are numerical simulations and experimental methods. However, experiment methods are difficult to obtain the whole flow field information and also high-cost while numerical simulation is extraordinary time-consuming and limited in low Reynolds number and simple geometric configuration. In addition, numerical simulations are difficult to handle the moving mesh technique. In this paper, physics informed neural network (PINN) is proposed to solve the VIV and wake-induced vibr…
We have performed Coherent-vorticity Preserving Large-Eddy simulations of a trefoil knot-shaped vortex, inspired by the experiments of Kleckner and Irvine. The flow parameter space is extended in the present study, including variations of the circulation Reynolds numbers in the range Re = 2000 - 200000, where Re = 20000 is the value used in the experiments. The vortex line corresponding to the trefoil knot is defined using a parametric equation and the Biot-Savart law is employed to initialize the velocity field. The CvP LES computation displays a good qualitative match with the experiment. In…
We study the large-scale helical vortex shedding regime in the wake of an axisymmetric body with a blunt trailing edge at high Reynolds numbers, both experimentally and by means of local, linear, spatiotemporal stability analysis. In the instability analysis we take into account the detailed downstream evolution of the basic flow behind the body base. The study confirms the existence of a finite region of absolute instability for the first azimuthal number in the near field of the wake. Such instability is believed to trigger the large scale helical vortex shedding downstream of the recirculat…
The present article aims to study the suppression of vortex shedding using a passive flow control technique (slit through a circular cylinder) in the laminar regime (Re=100-500). The slit width ratio S/D (slit width/diameter) on the modified cylinder plays an essential role to control the vortex shedding. The additional flow through the slit leads to the suppression of the global instability and vortex shedding, whereas a large amount of flow through the slit drastically alters the behavior of vortex shedding. The nature of vortex shedding remains periodic for all S/D, and the root mean square…
We compute the solutions of Prandtl's and Navier-Stokes equations for the two dimensional flow induced by a rectilinear vortex interacting with a boundary in the half plane. For this initial datum Prandtl's equation develops, in a finite time, a separation singularity. We investigate the different stages of unsteady separation for Navier-Stokes solution at different Reynolds numbers $Re=10^3-10^5$, and we show the presence of a large-scale interaction between the viscous boundary layer and the inviscid outer flow. We also see a subsequent stage, characterized by the presence of a small-scale i…
Impact of perturbed eddy-viscosity modeling on stability and shape sensitivity of the hydro-turbine vortex rope using linearized Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations
The interaction of trailing and leading vortex structures in low Reynolds number forced (varicose) jet with coflow is studied using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), where we report the dynamics of these vortices for a range of varying parameters. In a circular forced jet with Strouhal number 0.2, continuous formation of these vortices is observed which undergo pairing, tearing and disintegration. The forced jet is analyzed for varying frequency of forced perturbations, coflow temperature, turbulence intensity, momentum thickness, coflow intensity and Reynolds number at a constant forcing amp…
Based on the solution of Atanasiu et al. (2004), a theoretical model for axisymmetric vortex flows is derived in the present study by solving the vorticity transport equation for an inviscid, incompressible fluid in cylindrical coordinates. The model can describe a variety of axisymmetric flows with particular boundary conditions at a moderately high Reynolds number. This paper shows one example: a high Reynolds number laminar vortex ring. The model can represent a family of vortex rings by specifying the modulus function using a Rayleigh distribution function. The characteristics of this vort…
Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) offer a safe, renewable, and environmentally friendly energy source for energy harvesting. To enhance the energy harvesting capability of the circular cylinder-based devices, the authors explore the placement of the normal slit by determining the most effective slit offset location from the cylinder's center. Using the open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program OpenFOAM, a series of numerical simulations are conducted to determine the utility of the slit placement on the circular cylinder and how it influences (positively/negatively) the harvester's …
The merger of two like-signed vortices is a well-studied problem, but in a turbulent flow, we may often have more than two like-signed vortices interacting. We study the merger of three or more identical co-rotating vortices initially arranged on the vertices of a regular polygon. At low to moderate Reynolds numbers, we find an additional stage in the merger process, absent in the merger of two vortices, where an annular vortical structure is formed and is long-lived. Vortex merger is slowed down significantly due to this. Such annular vortices are known at far higher Reynolds numbers in studi…
Using high Reynolds number experimental data, we search for most dissipative, most intense structures. These structures possess a scaling predicted by log-Poisson model for the dissipation field $ε_r$. The probability distribution function for the exponents $α$, $ε_r\sim e^{αa}$, has been constructed, and compared with Poisson distribution. These new experimental data suggest that the most intense structures have co-dimension less than 2. The log-Poisson statistics is compared with log-binomial which follows from the random $β$-model.
The head-on collision of two vortex rings can produce diverse phenomena: a tiara of secondary rings, vortex sheets which flatten and interact iteratively, or the violent disintegration of the rings into a turbulent cloud. The outcome of the interaction is determined by the nature of the instability affecting two impinging vortex rings. Here, we carry out a systematic study to determine the dominant instability as a function of the parameters of the problem. To this end, we numerically simulate the head on collision of vortex rings with circulation Reynolds numbers between $1000$ and $3500$ and…
The present study investigates the passive flow control phenomena over a two-dimensional circular cylinder using numerical simulations in the laminar regime. The aim is to explore one of the passive control techniques, which involves the introduction of a slit to the geometry of the cylinder. The two parameters, slit width ratio S/D (slit width/diameter) and slit angle (measured with respect to the incoming flow direction), play an essential role in determining the trend of critical Reynolds number (Rec). Most of the analysis invokes flow visualization and saturation amplitude methods to obtai…

An essential ingredient of turbulent flows is the vortex stretching mechanism, which emanates from the non-linear interaction of vorticity and strain-rate tensor and leads to formation of extreme events. We analyze the statistical correlations between vorticity and strain rate by using a massive database generated from very well resolved direct numerical simulations of forced isotropic turbulence in periodic domains. The grid resolution is up to $12288^3$, and the Taylor-scale Reynolds number is in the range $140-1300$. In order to understand the formation and structure of extreme vorticity fl…

The Reynolds number provides a characterization of the transition to turbulent flow, with wide application in classical fluid dynamics. Identifying such a parameter in superfluid systems is challenging due to their fundamentally inviscid nature. Performing a systematic study of superfluid cylinder wakes in two dimensions, we observe dynamical similarity of the frequency of vortex shedding by a cylindrical obstacle. The universality of the turbulent wake dynamics is revealed by expressing shedding frequencies in terms of an appropriately defined superfluid Reynolds number, ${\rm Re}_s$, that ac…
This work applies a combined approach a reduced-order model (ROM) together with experiments and direct numerical simulations to investigate the optimal efficiency of fluid-flow energy harvesting from transverse vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder. High resolution efficiency maps were predicted over wide ranges of flow reduced velocities and structural damping ratios, and the maximum efficiency and optimal settings of damping ratio and reduced velocity were then examined for different mass ratios and Reynolds numbers. Efficiencies predicted by the ROM were also validated again…
Intense fluctuations of energy dissipation rate in turbulent flows result from the self-amplification of strain rate via a quadratic nonlinearity, with contributions from vorticity (via the vortex stretching mechanism) and the pressure Hessian tensor, which we analyze here using direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence in periodic domains of up to $12288^3$ grid points, and Taylor-scale Reynolds numbers in the range $140-1300$. We extract the statistics of various terms involved in amplification of strain and additionally condition them on the magnitude of strain. We find that stra…
An investigation of optimal feedback controllers' performance and robustness is carried out for vortex shedding behind a 2D cylinder at low Reynolds numbers. To facilitate controller design, we present an efficient modelling approach in which we utilise the resolvent operator to recast the linearised Navier-Stokes equations into an input-output form from which frequency responses can be computed. The difficulty of applying modern control design techniques to complex, high-dimensional flow systems is thus overcome by using low-order models identified from these frequency responses. The low-orde…
The streamwise and transverse velocities are measured simultaneously in grid turbulence at Reynolds numbers 100-300. We extract typical intermittency patterns, which are consistent with velocity profiles of Burgers and Lamb-Oseen vortices. The radii of these vortex tubes are estimated to be several of the Kolmogorov length.
Bio-inspired oscillatory foil propulsion has the ability to traverse various propulsive modes by dynamically changing the foil's heave and pitch kinematics. This research characterizes the propulsion properties and wake dynamics of a symmetric oscillating foil, specifically targeting the high Reynolds number operation of small to medium surface vessels whose propulsive specifications have a broad range of loads and speeds. An unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver with a k-$ω$ SST turbulence model is used to sweep through pitch amplitude and frequency at two heave amplitudes o…
Herein, the Karman vortex system is considered to be a large recurrent neural network, and the computational capability is numerically evaluated by emulating nonlinear dynamical systems and the memory capacity. Therefore, the Reynolds number dependence of the Karman vortex system computational performance is revealed and the optimal computational performance is achieved near the critical Reynolds number at the onset of Karman vortex shedding, which is associated with a Hopf bifurcation. Our finding advances the understanding of the relationship between the physical properties of fluid dynamics…
We have conducted experiments on the effect of polymer solutions on the formation and propagation of vortex rings. We study this effect in aqueous solution of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PAMH) at different concentrations. Addition of PAMH imparts shear-rate dependent viscosity and elasticity to the solvent. With increasing concentration of PAMH both the zero-shear-rate viscosity ($η_0$) and the infinite-shear-rate viscosity ($η_{\infty}$) increase. The relaxation time also increases with the increase in concentration. We generate vortex rings using a piston-cylinder mechanism in a glass tank an…
An experimental analysis of the vortex-induced vibrations of a hanging string with variable tension along its length is presented in this paper. It is shown that standing waves develop along the hanging string. The evolution of the Strouhal number St with the Reynolds number Re first follows a trend similar to what is observed for a circular cylinder in a flow for relatively low Reynolds numbers (32<Re<700). Second, the extracted mode shapes are self-similar : a rescaling of the spanwise coordinate by a self-similarity coefficient allows all of them to collapse on a unique function. The self-s…
Regular perturbation solutions are obtained for the Stokes flow field, the first order effects of inertia on the flow field, and the primary and secondary pressure fields in the circular lid driven cavity. The physical mechanism that causes vortex breakdown exists at small Reynolds number; it is a stagnation of the secondary flow by an adverse pressure gradient. The discontinuity between the rotating lid and the stationary sidewall has negligible influence on the flow field provided that the inertial forcing of the secondary flow is not localized near the boundary discontinuity, and the Reynol…
The generation of initial or inflow synthetic turbulent velocity or scalar fields reproducing statistical characteristics of realistic turbulence is still a challenge. The synthetic eddy method, previously introduced in the context of inflow conditions for large eddy simulations, is based on the assumption that turbulence can be regarded as a superposition of coherent structures. In this paper, a new type of synthetic eddy method is proposed, where the fundamental eddy is constructed by superposing three Hill's vortices, with their axes orthogonal to each other. A distribution of Hill's vortic…
Hairpin vortices are widely studied as an important structural aspect of wall turbulence. The present work describes, for the first time, nonlinear traveling wave solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations in the channel flow geometry -- exact coherent states (ECS) -- that display hairpin-like vortex structure. This solution family comes into existence at a saddle-node bifurcation at Reynolds number Re=666. At the bifurcation, the solution has a highly symmetric quasistreamwise vortex structure similar to that reported for previously studied ECS. With increasing distance from the bifurcation, h…
We study the stability of density stratified flow between co-rotating vertical cylinders with rotation rates $Ω_o < Ω_i$ and radius ratio $r_i/r_o=0.877$, where subscripts $o$ and $i$ refer to the outer and inner cylinders. Just as in stellar and planetary accretion disks, the flow has rotation, anticyclonic shear, and a stabilizing density gradient parallel to the rotation axis. The primary instability of the laminar state leads not to axisymmetric Taylor vortex flow but to the non-axisymmetric {\it stratorotational instability} (SRI), so named by Shalybkov and Rüdiger (2005). The present wor…
The generation of electrical power from Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) of a cylinder is investigated numerically. The cylinder is free to oscillate in the direction transverse to the incoming flow. The cylinder is attached to a magnet that can move along the axis of a coil made from conducting wire. The magnet and the coil together constitute a basic electrical generator. When the cylinder undergoes VIV, the motion of the magnet creates a voltage across the coil, which is connected to a resistive load. By Lenz's law, induced current in the coil applies a retarding force to the magnet. Effectiv…
We present an optimization-based method to efficiently calculate accurate nonlinear models of Taylor vortex flow. We use the resolvent formulation of McKeon & Sharma (2010) to model these Taylor vortex solutions by treating the nonlinearity not as an inherent part of the governing equations but rather as a triadic constraint which must be satisfied by the model solution. We exploit the low rank linear dynamics of the system to calculate an efficient basis for our solution, the coefficients of which are then calculated through an optimization problem where the cost function to be minimized is t…
