We developed a novel technique for frequency measurement and synthesis, based on the operation of a femtosecond comb generator as transfer oscillator. The technique can be used to measure frequency ratios of any optical signals throughout the visible and near-infrared part of the spectrum. Relative uncertainties of $10^{-18}$ for averaging times of 100 s are possible. Using a Nd:YAG laser in combination with a nonlinear crystal we measured the frequency ratio of the second harmonic $ν_{SH}$ at 532 nm to the fundamental $ν_0$ at 1064 nm, $ν_{SH}/ν_0 = 2.000 000 000 000 000 001 \times (1 \pm 7 \times 10^{-19})$.
We demonstrate a powerful tool for high-resolution mid-IR spectroscopy and frequency metrology with quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). We have implemented frequency stabilization of a QCL to an ultra-low expansion (ULE) reference cavity, via upconversion to the near-IR spectral range, at a level of $1\times10^{-13}$. The absolute frequency of the QCL is measured relative to a hydrogen maser, with instability $<1\times10^{-13}$ and inaccuracy $5\times10^{-13}$, using a frequency comb phase-stabilized to an independent ultrastable laser. The QCL linewidth is determined to be 60 Hz, dominated by fibe…

The key enabling components in these techniques are programmable optical pulse shaping, frequency-to-time mapping via dispersive propagation, and high-speed photodetection. The main advantages and challenges of several different photonic RF-AWG schemes are discussed. We further review some proof-of-concept demonstrations of ultrabroadband RF-AWG applications, including high-resolution ranging and ul…
High absorption in a wide frequency band has attracted considerable interest since their potential applications in frequency spectrum imaging systems and anti-radar cloaking. In this paper, a polarization-independent, ultra-broadband and omnidirectional terahertz absorber is proposed, fabricated and evaluated. It is experimentally demonstrated that an over 95% absorption can be obtained in the frequency range of 0.75~2.41 THz. Attributing to the multi-frequency destructive interference between the layers and the impedance-matching condition of the grating, five successive absorption peaks at 0…
Ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency have great application prospects in the field of nano-optics. Here, in the case of continuous wave incidence, the femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency are achieved in the transmission system consisting of a rectangular cavity, a V-groove (VG) cavity and a nanowire embedded with quantum emitters (QEs). The generation mechanism of the ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency is elucidated by semi-classical Dicke model. Attribute to the presence of the two-level QEs, the field amplitude in plasmonic resonator is oscillating wi…
We numerically investigate the influence of high-order dispersion on both temporal and spectral characterizations of microresonator-based optical frequency combs. The moment method is utilized to study the temporal dynamics of intracavity solitons. The theoretical and numerical results indicate the temporal shifts are induced by high-odd-order dispersion rather than high-even-order dispersion. The role of high-order dispersion on the frequency comb envelopes is carefully elucidated through analyzing the intracavity Cherenkov radiations. We further demonstrate that the spectra envelope of an ul…
Precise measurements of the geometrical thickness of a sample and its refractive index are important for materials science, engineering, and medical diagnosis. Among the possible non-contact evaluation methods, optical interferometric techniques possess the potential of providing superior resolution. However, in the optical frequency region, the ambiguity in the absolute phase-shift makes it difficult to measure these parameters of optically thick dispersive materials with sufficient resolution. Here, we demonstrate that dual frequency-comb spectroscopy can be used to precisely determine the a…
We demonstrate a frequency synchronization scheme with the phase noise compensation function placed at the client site. One transmitting module hence can be linked with multiple client sites. As a performance test, using two separate 50 km fiber spools, we recover the 100 MHz disseminated reference frequencies at two remote sites, separately. Relative frequency stabilities between two recovered frequency signals of 2.8E-14/s and 2.5E-17/day are obtained. This scalable scheme is suitable for the applications of frequency dissemination with a star-topology, such as SKA and DSN.

We report ultra-low phase-noise microwave generation at a 9.6 GHz carrier frequency from optical frequency combs based on diode-pumped solid-state lasers emitting at telecom wavelength and referenced to a common cavity-stabilized continuous-wave laser. Using a novel fibered polarization-maintaining pulse interleaver, a single-oscillator phase-noise floor of -171 dBc/Hz has been measured with commercial PIN InGaAs photodiodes, constituting a record for this type of detector. Also, a direct optical measurement of the stabilized frequency combs timing jitter was performed using a balanced optical…
Precise measurement of multi-parameters of ultrafast lasers is vital both in scientific investigations and technical applications, such as, optical field manipulation, pulse shaping, sample characteristics test, and biomedical imaging. Tremendous progress in parameter measurement of ultrafast laser has been made, including single-shot spectra acquired by time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform in spectral domain, and pulse magnification or compression realized by time lens in temporal domain. Nevertheless, single-shot measurement of frequency-resolved states of polarization (SOPs) of ultrafa…
Optical frequency combs are crucial for both fundamental science and applications demanding wide frequency spanning and ultra-precision resolutions. Recent advancements of nonlinear Kerr effect based optical frequency combs in microcavities open up new opportunities in a compact platform, however, internal cavity-enhanced nonlinearities are still unclear. Here we demonstrate transient nonlinear dynamics during optical frequency comb formation inside a Kerr microcavity. We show that gain spiking forms due to nonlinear phase modulation, causing comb lines' self-detuning nearby a cavity resonance…
We present an optical frequency divider based on a 200 MHz repetition rate Er:fiber mode-locked laser that, when locked to a stable optical frequency reference, generates microwave signals with absolute phase noise that is equal to or better than cryogenic microwave oscillators. At 1 Hz offset from a 10 GHz carrier, the phase noise is below -100 dBc/Hz, limited by the optical reference. For offset frequencies > 10 kHz, the phase noise is shot noise limited at -145 dBc/Hz. An analysis of the contribution of the residual noise from the Er:fiber optical frequency divider is also presented.
An ultra-low intensity and beatnote phase noise dual-frequency vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser is built at telecom wavelength. The pump laser is realized by polarization combining two single-mode fibered laser diodes in a single-mode fiber, leading to a 100 % in-phase correlation of the pump noises for the two modes. The relative intensity noise is lower than -140 dB/Hz, and the beatnote phase noise is suppressed by 30 dB, getting close to the spontaneous emission limit. The role of the imperfect cancellation of the thermal effect resulting from unbalanced pumping of the two mo…
Dispersion engineering is among the most important steps towards a promising optical frequency comb. We propose a new and general approach to trim frequency combs using a self-adaptive boundary of the optical mode at different wavelengths in a sub-wavelength structured waveguide. The feasibility of ultra-wide bandwidth dispersion engineering comes from the fact that light at different wavelengths automatically self-adapts to slightly different effective spatial spans determined by the effective indices of the mode. Using this self-adaptive variation on the confinement, we open up the window of…
Ultra-high frequency acoustic resonances ($\backsim$2 GHz) trapped within the glass core ($\backsim$1 $μ$m diameter) of a photonic crystal fiber are selectively excited through electrostriction using laser pulses of duration 100 ps and energy 500 pJ. Using precisely timed sequences of such driving pulses, we achieve coherent control of the acoustic resonances by constructive or destructive interference, demonstrating both enhancement and suppression of the vibrations. A sequence of 27 resonantly-timed pulses provides a 100-fold increase in the amplitude of the vibrational mode. The results are…
A whole class of two-color experiments involves intense, short Terahertz radiation pulses. The detector element is a GaAs-based field effect transistor operated at room temperature. THz detection is successfully demonstrated at frequencies up to 4.9 THz. The THz detection time constant is shorter than 30 ps, the optical time constant is 150 ps. This detector is ideally suited for precise, simultaneous resolution of …
We present a compact and robust transportable ultra-stable laser system with minimum fractional frequency instability of $1\times10^{-15}$ at integration times between 1 to 10 s. The system was conceived as a prototype of a subsystem of a microwave-optical local oscillator to be used on the satellite mission STE-QUEST (Space-Time Explorer and QUantum Equivalence Principle Space Test, http://sci.esa.int/ste-quest/). It was therefore designed to be compact, to sustain accelerations occurring during rocket launch, to exhibit low vibration sensitivity, and to reach a low frequency instability. Ove…
In this letter, we introduce the concept and experimentally demonstrate an ultralong Faraday laser as an optical frequency standard in principle. The ultralong Faraday laser is based on the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with ultra-narrow bandwidth and the ultralong fiber extended cavity of $800$ m. The ultra-narrow FADOF is based on atomic transition line of isotope $^{87}$Rb, which has an ultra-narrow bandwidth of $26.0$ MHz and a transmission of $23.6\%$ at $780$ nm. Fibers of length $150$ m and $800$ m are used as ultralong fiber extended cavities, which provide optica…
We report on a fiber-stabilized agile laser with ultra-low frequency noise. The frequency noise power spectral density is comparable to that of an ultra-stable cavity stabilized laser at Fourier frequencies higher than 30 Hz. When it is chirped at a constant rate of ~ 40 MHz/s, the max non-linearity frequency error is about 50 Hz peak-to-peak over more than 600 MHz tuning range. The Rayleigh backscattering is found to be a significant frequency noise source dependent on fiber length, chirping rate and the power imbalance of the interferometer arms. We analyze this effect both theoretically and…
Low-noise frequency conversion of single photons is a critical tool in establishing fibre-based quantum networks. We show that a single photonic crystal fibre can achieve frequency conversion by Bragg-scattering four-wave mixing of source photons from an ultra-broad wavelength range by engineering a symmetric group velocity profile. Furthermore, we discuss how pump tuning can mitigate realistic discrepancies in device fabrication. This enables a single highly adaptable frequency conversion interface to link disparate nodes in a quantum network via the telecoms band.
Here, ultra-low relative phase jitters over a wide optical spectrum were achieved for dual Ti:Sapphire optical frequency combs. The two optical frequency combs were independently phase-locked to a Sr optical lattice clock laser delivered through a commercial optical fiber network. We confirmed that the relative phase jitters between the two combs integrated from 8.3 mHz to 200 kHz were below 1 rad, corresponding to a relative linewidth of below 8.3 mHz, over the entire wavelength of the optical frequency combs ranging from 550 nm to 1020 nm. Our work paves the way for ultrahigh-precision dual-…

By varying the density of an ultracold $^{88}$Sr sample from $10^9$ cm$^{-3}$ to $> 10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$, we make the first definitive measurement of the density-related frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the $^1S_0$ - $^3P_1$ optical clock transition in an alkaline earth system. In addition, we report the most accurate measurement to date of the $^{88}$Sr $^1S_0 - ^3P_1$ optical clock transition frequency. Including a detailed analysis of systematic errors, the frequency is ($434 829 121 312 334 \pm 20_{stat} \pm 33_{sys}$) Hz.
We demonstrate in-line extraction of an ultra-stable frequency signal over an optical link of 92-km of installed telecommunication fibers, following the proposition of G. Grosche in 2010. We show that the residual frequency noise at the extraction end is noticeably below that at the main link output when the extraction is near the input end, as expected from a simple model of the noise compensation. We obtain relative frequency instabilities, expressed as overlapping Allan deviation, of 8x10-16 at 1 s averaging time and a few 10-19 at 1 day. These results are at the state-of-the-art for a link…
Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) is an effective algorithm for resolving Maxwell equations directly in time domain. Although FDTD has obtained sufficient development, there still exists some improvement space for it, such as ultra-wide-band response and frequency-dependent nonlinearity. In order to resolve these troubles, a modified version of FDTD called complex-field frequency-decomposition (CFFD) FDTD method is introduced, in which the complex-field is adopted to eliminate pseudo-frequency components when computing nonlinearity and the frequency-decomposition is adopted to transform an …

In this manuscript, we present a Doppler-cancellation setup based on a digital phase-locked loop for ultra-stable optical signal dissemination over fiber. The optical phase stabilization setup is based on a usual heterodyne Michelson-interferometer setup,…
In this letter, we report on all-optical fiber approach to the generation of ultra-low noise microwave signals. We make use of two erbium fiber mode-locked lasers phase locked to a common ultra-stable laser source to generate an 11.55 GHz signal with an unprecedented relative phase noise of -111 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz from the carrier. The residual frequency instability of the microwave signals derived from the two optical frequency combs is below 2.3 10^(-16) at 1s and about 4 10^(-19) at 6.5 10^(4)s (in 5 Hz bandwidth, three days continuous operation).

We demonstrate a technique for frequency measurements of atomic transitions with a precision of 30 kHz. The frequency is measured using a ring-cavity resonator whose length is calibrated against a reference laser locked to the $D_2$ line of $^{87}$Rb, the frequency of which is known to 10 kHz. We have used this to measure the hyperfine structure in the $5P_{3/2}$ state of $^{85}$Rb. We obtain precise values for the hyperfine constants $A=25.041(6)$ MHz and $B=26.013(25)$ MHz, and a value of 77.992(20) MHz for the isotope shift in the $D_2$ line.
A system providing an optical frequency with an instability comparable to that of a hydrogen maser is presented. It consists of a $5$ $\mathrm{cm}$ long, vertically oriented silicon optical resonator operated at temperatures between $1.5$ $\mathrm{K}$ and $3.6$ $\mathrm{K}$ in a closed-cycle cryostat with low-temperature Joule-Thomson stage. We show that with a standard cryostat, a simple cryogenic optomechanical setup, no active or passive vibration isolation, a minimum frequency instability of $2.5\times10^{-15}$ at $τ=1500$ $\mathrm{s}$ integration time can be reached. The influence of puls…
This article describes a simplified reconstruction algorithm for frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) measurements of highly (monotonically) chirped pulses. The FROG traces are calculated using the stationary phase approximation, significantly reducing the data size and convergence time compared to discrete Fourier transform based methods. The method is verified via second harmonic generation FROG simulations and measurements of pulses centred at 800nm with a bandwidth of 55nm stretched to 32ps at the 1% intensity level, corresponding to a time-bandwidth product of 830.
We have demonstrated a frequency-stabilized tunable 318.6 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser system for the single-photon 6S1/2 - nP (n = 70 ~ 100) Rydberg excitation of cesium atoms. The 637.2 nm laser produced by single-pass sum frequency generation from two infrared fiber lasers is offset locked to a high-finesse ultra-low expansion (ULE) optical cavity placed in ultra-high vacuum using the electronic sideband locking technique. The generated 318.6 nm UV laser via cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation can be continuously tuned over 4 GHz by indirectly changing modulation frequency on the electr…
High-resolution addressing of individual ultracold atoms, trapped ions or solid state emitters allows for exquisite control in quantum optics experiments. We use programmable amplitude holograms generated on a digital micromirror device to create arbitrary microscopic beam shapes with full phase and amplitude control. The system self-corrects for aberrations of up to several $λ$ and reduces them to $λ/50$, leading to light patterns with a precision on the…

We report a study on the ultrafast coherent population oscillations (UCPO) in two level atoms induced by the frequency modulated few-cycle optical pulse train. The phenomenon of UCPO is investigated by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. We demonstrate that the quantum state of the atoms and the frequency of UCPO may be controlled by controlling the number of pulses in the pulse trains and the pulse repetition time respectively. Moreover, the robustness of the population inversion against the variation of the laser pulse parameters is also in…
Optical frequency combs (OFC) provide a convenient reference for the frequency stabilization of continuous-wave lasers. We demonstrate a frequency control method relying on tracking over a wide range and stabilizing the beat note between the laser and the OFC. The approach combines fast frequency ramps on a millisecond timescale in the entire mode-hop free tuning range of the laser and precise stabilization to single frequencies. We apply it to a commercially available optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and demonstrate tuning over more than 60 GHz with a ramping speed up to 3 GHz/ms. Frequenc…
Photonic generation of radio-frequency signals has shown significant advantages over the electronic counterparts, allowing the high precision generation of radio-frequency carriers up to the terahertz-wave region with flexible bandwidth for radar applications. Great progress has been made in photonics-based radio-frequency waveform generation. However, the approaches that rely on sophisticated benchtop digital microwave components, such as synthesizers and digital-to-analog converters have limited achievable bandwidth and thus resolution for radar detections. Methods based on voltage-controlle…
We report the dissemination of an ultrastable optical frequency signal to two distant users simultaneously using a branching network. The ultrastable signal is extracted along a main fibre link; it is optically tracked with a narrow-linewidth laser diode, which light is injected in a secondary link. The propagation noise of both links is actively compensated. We implement this scheme with two links of 50-km fibre spools, the extraction being setup at the mid-point of the main link. We show that the extracted signal at the end of the secondary link exhibits fractional frequency instability of 1…
We have developed an ultra-stable source in the deep ultraviolet, suitable to fulfill the interrogation requirements of a future fully-operational lattice clock based on neutral mercury. At the core of the system is a Fabry-Pérot cavity which is highly impervious to temperature and vibrational perturbations. The mirror substrate is made of fused silica in order to exploit the comparatively low thermal noise limits associated with this material. By stabilizing the frequency of a 1062.6 nm Yb-doped fiber laser to the cavity, and including an additional link to LNE-SYRTE's fountain primary freque…

We introduce the first method to enable an optical amplification of a coherent Raman spectroscopy signal called radio frequency Doppler Raman spectroscopy. Doppler Raman measurements amplify the optical signals in coherent Raman spectroscopy by converting a spectral frequency shift imparted by an impulsive coherent Raman excitation to a change in a probe pulse transit time. This transit time perturbation is detected through the phase of a radio frequency electronic signal measured at a harmonic of the probe pulse train. By exploiting this new capability to scale the signal of a coherent Raman …
We vary the time-frequency mode structure of ultrafast pulse-pumped modulational instability (MI) twin beams in an argon-filled hollow-core kagomé-style PCF by adjusting the pressure, pump pulse chirp, fiber length and parametric gain. Compared to solid-core systems, the pressure dependent dispersion landscape brings increased flexibility to the tailoring of frequency correlations and we demonstrate that the pump pulse chirp can be used to tune the joint spectrum of femtosecond-pumped sources. We also characterize the resulting mode content, not only by measuring the multimode second-order cor…
We use a diode laser locked to a Rb transition as the frequency reference along with a scanning Michelson interferometer to make precise measurements on the $D_1$ and $D_2$ lines of potassium. The Rb reference frequency is known with sub-MHz accuracy. The leading source of systematic error cancels in the determination…
