We study the performance of the triple-GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detector in pure noble gases Ne, Ar and Xe, at different pressures varying from 1 to 10 atm. In Ar and Xe, the maximum attainable gain of the detector abruptly drops down for pressures exceeding 3 atm. In contrast, the maximum gain in Ne was found to increase with pressure, reaching a value of 100,000 at 7 atm. The results obtained are of particular interest for developing noble gas-based cryogenic particle detectors for solar neutrino and dark matter search.

In this paper, a detailed investigation has been carried out to understand the physics behind GEM charging-up and its effects on gain. Experiments have been performed on both double and triple GEM with the help of 55Fe X-ray source and a comparative study of these configurations along with the single GEM results observed in our previous work has been reported. The increase in gain due to polarization of GEM foil dielectric and reduction in gain due to charge accumulation on dielectric are studied for various field configurations and different radiation intensities.
Gas electron Multipliers (GEM) are a new generation of gaseous avalanche devices in the Micro Patterned Gaseous Detector category. GEMs are widely used in both nuclear and high energy experiments as well as in medical science. Several parameters define the performance of these types of devices under various experimental conditions. This article focuses on the study of effective gain and Ion Back Flow (IBF) in both triple and quadruple GEM detectors. In this work we characterized a X-ray position sensitive gaseous detector based in a triple stack of gas electron multipliers (GEM). The readout circuit is divided in 256 strips for each dimension and using a resistive chain interconnecting the strips, we are able to reconstruct the radiation interaction points by resistive charge division. The detector achieved gains above $10^4$, energy resolution of 15.28% (FWHM) for 5.9keV X-rays, and position resolution of 1.2mm, while operating in Ar/CO$_2$(90/10) at atmospheric pressure.

Results obtained with a triple GEM detector operated in pure CF4 with and without a reflective CsI photocathode are presented. The detector operates in a stable mode at gains up to 10^4. A deviation from exponential growth starts to develop when the total charge exceeds ~ 4 10^6 e leading to gain saturation when the total charge is ~ 2 10^7 e and making the structure relatively robust against discharges. Triple-GEM detectors for the GE2/1 and ME0 stations of the endcap muon system for the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS Experiment have been operated in a test beam to measure their efficiency and spatial resolution, together with a high spatial resolution triple- GEM tracker. A production module of GE2/1 detectors and a prototype ME0 detector show excellent local efficiency. A prototype detector with GEM foils employing random hole sectorization showed significant reduction of dead areas. The spatial resolution of the tracker has been measured and found close to the expected value of 75 μm.

We present measurements with a GEM based TPC prototypes and the TimePix CMOS ASIC as charge collecting anode. Tests with a small prototype were performed in a 5 GeV electron beam at DESY. Different GEM orientations and geometries were tested. It is shown that the point resolution for short drift distances is better than 20 micrometer. The achieved time resolution is better than 10 ns at 100 MHz clock frequency. Furthermore, experimental studies with an enlarged pixel size are addressed. We present a systematic investigation of the gain properties of a gas electron multiplier (GEM) foil in pure dimethyl ether (DME) at low pressures. The GEM is made from copper- clad liquid crystal polymer insulator (LCP-GEM) designed for space use, and is applied to a time projection chamber filled with low-pressure DME gas to observe the linear polarization of cosmic X-rays. We have measured gains of a 100 um-thick LCP-GEM as a function of the voltage between GEM electrodes at various gas pressures ranging from 10 to 190 Torr with 6.4 keV X-rays. Premixed Ar/CO2 (80:20) and (90:10) gases have been used for this stability study. A strong Fe55 X-ray source is used to irradiate the chamber. A triple-GEM detector with two-dimensional readout is developed. The detector provides high position resolution for powder diffraction experiments at synchrotron radiation. Spatial resolution of the detector is measured in the lab using a 55Fe X-ray source. A resolution of about 110 um FWHM is achieved. The energy resolution is better than 27% for 5.9 keV X-rays. The detector's validity under illumination of photons in particular energy range is verified using a Cu X-ray tube. The main purpose of this work is to study the performance of the APV25 and VMM3a readout chips with regards to using them in the front-end readout system of a Triple-GEM detector. For the APV25, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) was estimated with a cosmics measurement around 84.29 +/- 0.12. For the VMM3a, the noise of the chip was characterised in terms of the Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC) in the full parameter space and with increasing input capacitance. The optimization of resistive anode for two dimensional imaging detectors which consists of a series of high resistive square pads surrounding by low resistive strips has been studied by both numerical simulations and experimental tests. It has been found that to obtain good detector performance, the resistance ratio of the pad to the strip should be larger than 5, the nonuniformity of the pad surface resistivity had better be less than $20\%$, a smaller pad width leads to a smaller spatial resolution and when the pad width is $6mm$, the spatial resolution ($σ$) can reach about $105μm$. Performance of triple GEM prototypes in strong magnetic field has been evaluated bymeans of a muon beam at the H4 line of the SPS test area at CERN. Data have been reconstructedand analyzed offline with two reconstruction methods: the charge centroid and the micro-Time-Projection-Chamber exploiting the charge and the time measurement respectively. We study the feedback of positive ions in triple and quadruple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors. The effects of GEM hole diameter, detector gain, applied voltages, number of GEMs and other parameters on ion feedback are investigated in detail. In particular, it was found that the ion feedback is independent of the gas mixture and the pressure. In the optimized multi-GEM structure, the ion feedback current can be suppressed down to 0.5% of the anode current, at a drift field of 0.1 kV/cm and gain of 10^4. In this work, a triple GEM device with an effective readout area of 10 cm X 10 cm is developed, and an experiment of discriminating between cosmic muon and x-ray based on rising time is tested. The energy resolution of GEM detector is tested by 55Fe ray source to prove the GEM detector has a good performance.
