In this work we characterized a X-ray position sensitive gaseous detector based in a triple stack of gas electron multipliers (GEM). The readout circuit is divided in 256 strips for each dimension and using a resistive chain interconnecting the strips, we are able to reconstruct the radiation interaction points by resistive charge division. The detector achieved gains above $10^4$, energy resolution of 15.28% (FWHM) for 5.9keV X-rays, and position resolution of 1.2mm, while operating in Ar/CO$_2$(90/10) at atmospheric pressure.

We study the performance of the triple-GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detector in pure noble gases Ne, Ar and Xe, at different pressures varying from 1 to 10 atm. In Ar and Xe, the maximum attainable gain of the detector abruptly drops down for pressures exceeding 3 atm. In contrast, the maximum gain in Ne was found to increase with pressure, reaching a value of 100,000 at 7 atm. Results obtained with a triple GEM detector operated in pure CF4 with and without a reflective CsI photocathode are presented. The detector operates in a stable mode at gains up to 10^4. A deviation from exponential growth starts to develop when the total charge exceeds ~ 4 10^6 e leading to gain saturation when the total charge is ~ 2 10^7 e and making the structure relatively robust against discharges. We report on discharge probability studies with a single Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) under irradiation with alpha particles in Ar- and Ne-based gas mixtures. The discharge probability as a function of the GEM absolute gain is measured for various distances between an alpha source and the GEM. Triple-GEM detectors for the GE2/1 and ME0 stations of the endcap muon system for the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS Experiment have been operated in a test beam to measure their efficiency and spatial resolution, together with a high spatial resolution triple- GEM tracker. A production module of GE2/1 detectors and a prototype ME0 detector show excellent local efficiency. A prototype detector with GEM foils employing random hole sectorization showed significant reduction of dead areas. We present measurements with a GEM based TPC prototypes and the TimePix CMOS ASIC as charge collecting anode. Tests with a small prototype were performed in a 5 GeV electron beam at DESY. Different GEM orientations and geometries were tested. It is shown that the point resolution for short drift distances is better than 20 micrometer. The main purpose of this work is to study the performance of the APV25 and VMM3a readout chips with regards to using them in the front-end readout system of a Triple-GEM detector. For the APV25, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) was estimated with a cosmics measurement around 84.29 +/- 0.12.
