We investigate the linear stability of plane Poiseuille flow in 2D under slip boundary conditions. The slip s is defined by the tangential velocity at the wall in units of the maximal flow velocity. As it turns out, the critical Reynolds number depends smoothly on s but increases quite rapidly.
Exact solutions are obtained for the steady flow of a power-law fluid between parallel plates with partial slip conditions and uniform cross flow. The problem is properly formulated and similarities are exploited. The exact solutions are obtained in terms of integrals which can be performed, in closed form, in special cases of the power-law index n. Solutions to cases of n=1/2, 1, and 2; representing a pseudo-plastic, a Newtonian, and a dilatant fluid, respectively, are presented. Tendencies to corresponding degenerate cases in the literature are demonstrated. Depending on the strength of the …
Cerebral aneurysms and microaneurysms are abnormal vascular dilatations with high risk of rupture. An aneurysmal rupture could cause permanent disability and even death. Finding and treating aneurysms before their rupture is very difficult since symptoms can be easily attributed mistakenly to other common brain diseases. Mathematical models could highlight possible mechanisms of aneurismal development and suggest specialized biomarkers for aneurysms. Existing mathematical models of intracranial aneurysms focus on mechanical interactions between blood flow and arteries. However, these models ca…
We use numerical simulations to study the dynamics of red blood cells (RBCs) in unconfined and confined Poiseuille flow. Previous numerical studies with 3D vesicles have indicated that the slipper shape observed in experiments at high capillary number can be attributed to the bistability due to the interplay of wall push and outward migration tendency at higher viscosity contrasts. In this paper, we study this outward migration and bistability using numerical simulations for 3D capsules and provide phase diagrams of RBC dynamics with and without viscosity contrast. We observe a bistability of …
The numerical simulation of a Poiseuille flow in a narrow channel using the molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) is performed. Poiseuille flow of liquid Argon in a carbon nanochannel is simulated by embedding the fluid particles in a uniform force field. Density, velocity and Temperature profiles across the channel are investigated. When particles will be inserted into the flow, it is expected that the dynamics of flow will depend on the thermostat chosen. To obtain a more uniform temperature distribution across the channel we use local thermostating near the wall. The obtained results show tha…
Symmetric drainage flow of a compressible fluid from a fracture modeled as a long narrow channel is studied on the basis of linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations with no-slip condition. The Helmholtz decomposition theorem is used to decompose the velocity field into an irrotational part and a solenoidal part. The irrotational velocity is driven by the fluid's volumetric expansion whilst the role of the solenoidal velocity is to enforce the no-slip condition for the overall velocity and it does not contribute to the mass flow rate. It is found that at large times this no-slip flow exh…
In this work, we analyze the inertial migration of an electrophoretic particle in a 2-D Poiseuille flow with an electric field applied parallel to the walls. For a thin electrical double layer, the particle exhibits a slip-driven electrokinetic motion along the direction of the applied electric field, which causes the particle to lead or lag the flow (depending on its surface charge). The fluid disturbance caused by this slip-driven motion is characterized by a rapidly decaying source-dipole field which alters the inertial lift on the particle. We determine this inertial lift using the recipro…
We study the laminar turbulent boundary in plane Poiseuille flow at $Re=1400$ and $2180$ using the technique of edge tracking. For large computational domains the attracting state in the laminar-turbulent boundary is localized in spanwise and streamwise direction and chaotic.
The motion of a viscous drop is investigated when the interface is fully covered with a stagnant layer of surfactant in an arbitrary unsteady Stokes flow for the low surface Péclet number limit. The effect of the interfacial slip coefficient on the behavior of the flow field is also considered. The hydrodynamic problem is solved by the solenoidal decomposition method and the drag force is computed in terms of Faxen's laws using a perturbation ansatz in powers of the surface Péclet number. The analytical expressions for the migration velocity of the drop are also obtained in powers of the surfa…
We present an experimental study of transition to turbulence in a plane Poiseuille flow. Using a well-controlled perturbation, we analyse the flow using extensive Particule Image Velocimetry and flow visualisation (using Laser Induced Fluorescence) measurements and use the deformation of the mean velocity profile as a criterion to characterize the state of the flow. From a large parametric study, four different states are defined depending on the values of the Reynolds number and the amplitude of the perturbation. We discuss the role of coherent structures, like hairpin vortices, in the transi…

Travelling-wave solutions are shown to bifurcate from relative periodic orbits in plane Poiseuille flow at Re = 2000 in a saddle-node infinite period bifurcation. These solutions consist in self-sustaining sinuous quasi-streamwise streaks and quasi- streamwise vortices located in the bulk of the flow. The lower branch travelling-wave solutions evolve into spanwise localized states when the spanwise size Lz of the domain in which they are computed is increased. On the contrary, upper branch of travelling-wave solutions develop multiple streaks when Lz is increased. Upper branch travelling-wave …
We show possibility of the Plane Couette (PC) flow instability for Reynolds number Re>Reth=140. This new result of the linear hydrodynamic stability theory is obtained on the base of refusal from the traditionally used assumption on longitudinal periodicity of the disturbances along the direction of the fluid flow. We found that earlier existing understanding on the linear stability of this flow for any arbitrary large Reynolds number is directly related with an assumption on the separation of the variables of the spatial variability for the disturbance field and their periodicity in linear th…
Plane Poiseuille flow shows turbulence at a Reynolds number that is lower than the critical one for the onset of Tollmien-Schlichting waves. The transition to turbulence follows the same route as the by-pass transition in boundary layers, i.e. finite amplitude perturbations are required and the flow is dominated by downstream vortices and streaks in the transitional regime. In order to relate the phenomenology in plane Poiseuille flow to our previous studies of plane Couette flow (Kreilos & Eckhardt, 2012), we study a symmetric subspace of plane Poiseuille flow in which the bifurcation cascade…
We explore the effect of forcing on the linear shear flow or plane Couette flow, which is also the background flow in the very small region of the Keplerian accretion disk. We show that depending on the strength of forcing and boundary conditions suitable for the systems under consideration, the background plane shear flow and, hence, accretion disk velocity profile modifies to parabolic flow, which is plane Poiseuille flow or Couette-Poiseuille flow, depending on the frame of reference. In the presence of rotation, plane Poiseuille flow becomes unstable at a smaller Reynolds number under pure…
We investigate the laminar-turbulent boundary in plane Poiseuille flow by the method of edge tracking. In short and narrow computational domains we find for a wide range in Reynolds number that all states in the boundary converge to a period orbit with a period of the order of $10^{3}$ time units. The attracting states in these small domains are periodically extended in the spanwise and streamwise direction, but always localized to one side of the channel in the normal direction. In short and wide domains the edge states are localized in the spanwise direction. The periodic motion found in the…
The convection velocity of localized wave packet in plane-Poiseuille flow is found to be determined by a solitary wave at the centerline of a downstream vortex dipole in its mean field after deducting the basic flow. The fluctuation component following the vortex dipole oscillates with a global frequency selected by the upstream marginal absolute instability, and propagates obeying the local dispersion relation of the mean flow. By applying localized initial disturbances, a nonzero wave-packet density is achieved at the threshold state, suggesting a first order transition.
We study the linear stability of Plane Poiseuille flow of an elastoviscoplastic fluid using a revised version of the model proposed by Putz and Burghelea (Rheol. Acta (2009)48:673-689). The evolution of the microstructure upon a gradual increase of the external forcing is governed by a structural variable (the concentration of solid material elements) which decays smoothly from unity to zero as the stresses are gradually increased beyond the yield point. Stability results are in close conformity with the ones of a pseudo-plastic fluid. Destabilizing effects are related to the presence of an in…
In the above paper by Bechtel, Cai, Rooney and Wang, Physics of Fluids, 2004, 16, 3955-3974 six different theories of a Newtonian viscous fluid are investigated and compared, namely, the theory of a compressible Newtonian fluid, and five constitutive limits of this theory: the incompressible theory, the limit where density changes only due to changes in temperature, the limit where density changes only with changes in entropy, the limit where pressure is a function only of temperature, and the limit of pressure a function only of entropy. The six theories are compared through their ability to …
We perform a linear stability analysis of viscoelastic plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flows with free-slip boundary conditions. The fluid is described by the Oldroyd-B constitutive model, and the flows are driven by a suitable body force. We find that both types of flow become linearly unstable, and we characterise the spatial structure of the unstable modes. By performing a boundary condition homotopy from the free-slip to no-slip boundaries, we demonstrate that the unstable modes are directly related to the least stable modes of the no-slip problem, destabilised under the free-slip situa…
The instability of a streak and its nonlinear evolution are investigated by direct numerical simulation (DNS) for plane Poiseuille flow at Re=3000. It is suggested that there exists a traveling-wave solution (TWS). The TWS is localized around one of the two walls and notably resemble to the coherent structures observed in experiments and DNS so far. The phase space structure around this TWS is similar to a saddle point. Since the stable manifold of this TWS is extended close to the quasi two dimensional (Q2D) energy axis, the approaching process toward the TWS along the stable manifold is appr…
This paper develops a closed-form, analytical expression for the Darcy velocity of a Newtonian fluid flowing through a channel filled with a porous medium, bound by rigid walls and driven by a constant pressure gradient. We express the Darcy velocity as a Weierstrass elliptic function of the transverse coordinate. It allows us to get analytical expressions for volume flux and the rate of dissipation. The Weierstrass elliptic function is a doubly-periodic, complex-valued function defined over the complex plane. It takes real values only on certain segments in the complex plane. We show how to a…
The motion and deformation of a droplet suspended in an unbounded fluid with an arbitrary, but Stokesian, imposed flow is investigated when there is a slip at the interface between the two liquids. The boundary condition at the interface is accounted by means of a simple Navier slip condition. Expressions are derived considering the effect of slip on the velocity and the shape deformation of the droplet for any arbitrary imposed flow field, and results are presented for the specific cases of shear flow and Poiseuille flow with the results of Hetsroni and Haber (J. Fluid Mech., 1970, vol. 41(04…
Suppression of the transient energy growth in subcritical plane Poiseuille flow via feedback control is addressed. It is assumed that the time derivative of any of the velocity components can be imposed at the walls as control input, and that full-state information is available. We show that it is impossible to design a linear state-feedback controller that leads to a closed-loop flow system without transient energy growth. In a subsequent step, full-state feedback controllers -- directly targeting the transient growth mechanism -- are designed, using a procedure based on a Linear Matrix Inequ…
We study localised exact coherent structures in plane Poiseuille flow that are relative periodic orbits. They are obtained from extended states in smaller, periodically continued domains, by increasing the length to obtain streamwise localization and then by increasing the width to achieve spanwise localisation. The states maintain the travelling wave structure of the extended states, which is then modulated by a localised envelope on larger scales. In streamwise direction, the envelope shows exponential localization, with different exponents on the upstream and downstream side. The upstream e…
The direct numerical simulation of compressible fully developed turbulent Couette flow between two parallel plates with equal temperatures moving in opposite directions with some velocity was performed. The algorithm was tested on well known numerical solution for incompressible Poiseuille channel flow and found to provide its well description. The slip effects in studied flow are found to be negligibly small at the values of accommodation coefficients for velocity and temperature of the order of unity. The considerable increase of mean temperature with decreasing the accommodation coefficient…
In wall-bounded flows, the laminar regime remain linearly stable up to large values of the Reynolds number while competing with nonlinear turbulent solutions issued from finite amplitude perturbations. The transition to turbulence of plane channel flow (plane Poiseuille flow) is more specifically considered via numerical simulations. Previous conflicting observations are reconciled by noting that the two-dimensional directed percolation scenario expected for the decay of turbulence may be interrupted by a symmetry-breaking bifurcation favoring localized turbulent bands. At the other end of the…
We study the nonlinear stability of plane Couette and Poiseuille flows with the Lyapunov second method by using the classical L2-energy. We prove that the streamwise perturbations are L2-energy stable for any Reynolds number. This contradicts the results of Joseph [10], Joseph and Carmi [12] and Busse [4], and allows us to prove that the critical nonlinear Reynolds numbers are obtained along two-dimensional perturbations, the spanwise perturbations, as Orr [16] had supposed. This conclusion combined with recent results by Falsaperla et al. [8] on the stability with respect to tilted rolls, pro…
Many shear flows follow a route to turbulence that has striking similarities to bifurcation scenarios in low-dimensional dynamical systems. Among the bifurcations that appear, crisis bifurcations are important because they cause global transitions between open and closed attractors, or indicate drastic increases in the range of the state space that is covered by the dynamics. We here study exterior and interior crisis bifurcations in direct numerical simulations of transitional plane Poiseuille flow in a mirror-symmetric subspace. We trace the state space dynamics from the appearance of the fi…
In this work we investigate the issue of non-physical slip at wall of lattice Boltzmann simulations with the bounce-back boundary scheme. By comparing the analytical solution of two lattice models with four and nine discrete velocities for the force-driven Poiseuille flow, we are able to reveal the exact mechanism causing the issue. In fact, no boundary condition is defined by the bounce-back scheme for the the discrete velocities parallel to wall. Other factors, such as initial conditions and inlet and outlet boundary conditions, can play the role and induce the non-physical slip velocity. Th…
The normal-mode analysis of the Reynolds-Orr energy equation governing the stability of viscous motion for general three-dimensional disturbances has been revisited. The energy equation has been solved as an unconstrained minimization problem for the Couette-Poiseuille flow. The minimum Reynolds number for every Couette-Poiseuille velocity profile has been computed and compared with those available in the literature. For fully three-dimensional disturbances, it is shown that the minimum Reynolds number is in general smaller than the corresponding two-dimensional counterpart for all the Couette…
In this article we prove, choosing an appropriately weighted $L_2$-energy equivalent to the classical energy, that the plane Couette and Poiseuille flows are nonlinearly stable with respect to streamwise perturbations for any Reynolds number. In this case the coefficient of time-decay of the energy is $π^2/(2 {\rm Re})$, and it is a bound from above of the time-decay of streamwise perturbations of linearized equations. We also prove that the plane Couette and Poiseuille flows are nonlinearly stable if the Reynolds number is less then ${\rm Re}_{Orr}/\sin φ$ when the perturbation is a tilted pe…
A critical-layer instability of structural acoustic wall modes in a two-flexible-plate channel with Poiseuille flow: closed-form low-Mach corrections and parity-protected absorption

The rarefied effect of gas flow in microchannel is significant and cannot be well described by traditional hydrodynamic models. It has been know that discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) has the potential to investigate flows in a relatively wider range of Knudsen number because of its intrinsic kinetic nature inherited from Boltzmann equation. It is crucial to have a proper kinetic boundary condition for DBM to capture the velocity slip and the flow characteristics in the Knudsen layer. In this paper, we present a DBM combined with Maxwell-type boundary condition model for slip flow. The tangential…
Recently, detailed experiments on visco-elastic channel flow have provided convincing evidence for a nonlinear instability scenario which we had argued for based on calculations for visco-elastic Couette flow. Motivated by these experiments we extend the previous calculations to the case of visco-elastic Poiseuille flow, using the Oldroyd-B constitutive model. Our results confirm that the subcritical instability scenario is similar for both types of flow, and that the nonlinear transition occurs for Weissenberg numbers somewhat larger than one. We provide detailed results for the convergence o…
The transition to turbulence in plane Poiseuille flow (PPF) is connected with the presence of exact coherent structures. In contrast to other shear flows, PPF has a number of different coherent states that are relevant for the transition. We here discuss the different states, compare the critical Reynolds numbers and optimal wavelengths for their appearance, and explore the differences between flows operating at constant mass flux or at constant pressure drop. The Reynolds numbers quoted here are based on the mean flow velocity and refer to constant mass flux, the ones for constant pressure dr…
Red blood cells (RBCs) are the major component of blood and the flow of blood is dictated by that of RBCs. We employ vesicles, which consist of closed bilayer membranes enclosing a fluid, as a model system to study the behavior of RBCs under a confined Poiseuille flow. We extensively explore two main parameters: i) the degree of confinement of vesicles within the channel, and ii) the flow strength. Rich and complex dynamics for vesicles are revealed ranging from steady-state shapes (in the form of parachute and slipper) to chaotic dynamics of shape. Chaos occurs through a cascade of multiple p…
Here we report some interesting new features of the spatio-temporal instability of the incompressible plane Couette-Poiseuille flow (CPF). First of all, this flow represents the first instance of a "non-inflectional" absolute instability, within constant-viscosity formulation, which is triggered when one of the plates moves opposite to the bulk motion. More strikingly, with further increase in the negative plate motion, the absolute instability ($\textrm{AI}$) transitions to an "upstream" convective instability ($\textrm{CI}^-$), wherein an unstable wave packet moves opposite to the direction …

A continuum one-dimensional model of the plane Couette-Poiseuille flow is developed to describe the pressure distribution in a drag stage of molecular pump of either the Gaede or Holweck type. In spite of its simplicity and approximate nature the model provides a good qualitative representation of the drag pump operation in the whole range of the regimes from the continuum to free molecular ones.
Motivated by the recent discovery of a dispersive-to-nondispersive transition for linear waves in shear flows, we accurately explored the wavenumber-Reynolds number parameter map of the plane Poiseuille flow, in the limit of least-damped waves. We have discovered the existence of regions of the map where the dispersion and propagation features vary significantly from their surroundings. These regions are nested in the dispersive, low-wavenumber part of the map. This complex dispersion scenario demonstrates the existence of linear dispersive focusing in wave envelopes evolving out of an initial…
Based on the properties of large-scale plume currents, an injection/suction control strategy is introduced to enhance the strength of plume currents and the turbulent transport of passive scalar in rotating plane Poiseuille flow. The control keeps the classical non-penetrative condition on the stable side, and prescribes spanwise varying wall-normal velocity on the unstable side. Direct numerical simulations show that at medium rotation numbers, very weak injection/suction (the root-mean-square velocity on the controlled side is below $1\%$ of the bulk mean velocity) with properly distributed …
A modal stability analysis shows that plane Poiseuille flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid becomes unstable to a `center mode' with phase speed close to the maximum base-flow velocity, $U_{max}$. The governing dimensionless groups are the Reynolds number $Re = ρU_{max} H/η$, the elasticity number $E = λη/(H^2ρ)$, and the ratio of solvent to solution viscosity $η_s/η$; here, $λ$ is the polymer relaxation time, $H$ is the channel half-width, and $ρ$ is the fluid density. For experimentally relevant values (e.g., $E \sim 0.1$ and $β\sim 0.9$), the predicted critical Reynolds number, $Re_c$, for the center…
Turbulent-laminar banded patterns in plane Poiseuille flow are studied via direct numerical simulations in a tilted and translating computational domain using a parallel version of the pseudospectral code Channelflow. 3D visualizations via the streamwise vorticity of an instantaneous and a time-averaged pattern are presented, as well as 2D visualizations of the average velocity field and the turbulent kinetic energy. Simulations for Reynolds numbers descending from 2300 to 700 show the gradual development from uniform turbulence to a pattern with wavelength 20 half-gaps near Re=1900, to a patt…
We numerically investigate the hydrodynamics of a compound drop in a plane Poiseuille flow under Stokes regime. A neutrally buoyant, initially concentric compound drop is released into a fully developed flow, where it migrates to its equilibrium position. Based on the results, we find that the core-shell interaction affects the dynamics of both the core and the compound drop. During the initial transient period, the core revolves about the center of the compound drop due to the internal circulation inside the shell. At equilibrium, depending upon the nature of the flow field inside the shell, …
We investigate pressure driven pipe flow of Laponite suspension, as a model thixotropic fluid. The tendency of the suspension to age is controlled by addition of sodium chloride salt to vary the ionic strength. We use a syringe pump to prescribe the flow and observe that a steady state flow is obtained. Unusually, the steady state pressure drop required to maintain a constant flow rate decreases with an increase in the flow rate, in qualitative contrast to the expectation for Poiseuille flow. We demonstrate that experimental results obtained by varying the flow rate, salt concentration, and fl…
We present a detailed study of the linear stability of plane Couette-Poiseuille flow in the presence of a cross-flow. The base flow is characterised by the cross flow Reynolds number, $R_{inj}$ and the dimensionless wall velocity, $k$. Squire's transformation may be applied to the linear stability equations and we therefore consider 2D (spanwise-independent) perturbations. Corresponding to each dimensionless wall velocity, $k\in[0,1]$, two ranges of $R_{inj}$ exist where unconditional stability is observed. In the lower range of $R_{inj}$, for modest $k$ we have a stabilisation of long wavelen…
Turbulence in the restricted nonlinear (RNL) dynamics is analyzed and compared with DNS of Poiseuille turbulence at $R=1650$. The structures are obtained by POD analysis of the two components of the flow partition used in RNL dynamics: the streamwise-mean flow and fluctuations. POD analysis of the streamwise-mean flow indicates that the dominant POD modes, in both DNS and RNL, are roll-streaks harmonic in the spanwise. However, we conclude that these POD modes do not occur in isolation but rather are Fourier components of a coherent roll-streak structure. POD analysis of the fluctuations in DN…
The linear evolution of disturbances due to a ribbon vibrating at frequency $ω_0$ in plane Poiseuille flow is computed by solving the associated initial boundary value problem in the Fourier-Laplace plane, followed by inversion. A novel algorithm for identifying the temporal modes of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation (OSE) in the complex wavenumber plane, which are required in the inversion, is presented. Unlike in many prior studies, the performance of the Laplace integral first, not only avoids complicated causality arguments and confusion, in locating upstream and downstream modes, that is preval…
We report the results of an experimental investigation into the decay of turbulence in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow using 'quench' experiments where the flow laminarises after a sudden reduction in Reynolds number $Re$. Specifically, we study the velocity field in the streamwise-spanwise plane. We show that the spanwise velocity containing rolls, decays faster than the streamwise velocity, which displays elongated regions of higher or lower velocity called streaks. At final Reynolds numbers above 425, the decay of streaks displays two stages: first a slow decay when rolls are present and seco…
The linear amplification mechanisms leading to streamwise-constant large-scale structures in laminar and turbulent channel flows are considered. A key feature of the analysis is that the Orr--Sommerfeld and Squire operators are each considered separately. Physically this corresponds to considering two separate processes: (i) the response of wall-normal velocity fluctuations to external forcing; and (ii) the response of streamwise velocity fluctuations to wall-normal velocity fluctuations. In this way we exploit the fact that, for streamwise-constant fluctuations, the dynamics governing the wal…
