Motivated by the recent discovery of a dispersive-to-nondispersive transition for linear waves in shear flows, we accurately explored the wavenumber-Reynolds number parameter map of the plane Poiseuille flow, in the limit of least-damped waves. We have discovered the existence of regions of the map where the dispersion and propagation features vary significantly from their surroundings. These regions are nested in the dispersive, low-wavenumber part of the map. This complex dispersion scenario demonstrates the existence of linear dispersive focusing in wave envelopes evolving out of an initial, spatially localized, three-dimensional perturbation. An asymptotic wave packet's representation, based on the saddle-point method, allows to enlighten the nature of the packet's morphology, in particular the arrow-shaped structure and spatial spreading rates. A correlation is also highlighted between the regions of largest dispersive focusing and the regions which are most subject to strong nonlinear coupling in observations.
A particular mode of isotachophoresis (ITP) employs a pressure-driven flow opposite to the sample electromigration direction in order to anchor a sample zone at a specific position along a channel or capillary. We investigate this situation using a two-dimensional finite-volume model based on the Nernst-Planck equation. The imposed Poiseuille flow profile leads to a significant dispersion of the sample zone. This effect is detrimental for the resolution in analytical applications of ITP. We investigate the impact of convective dispersion, characterized by the area-averaged width of a sample zo…
The Eulerian advection-dispersion-reaction equation (ADRE) suffers the well-known scale-effect of reduced apparent reaction rates between chemically dissimilar fluids at larger scales (or dimensional averaging). The dispersion tensor in the ADRE must equally and simultaneously account for both solute mixing and spreading. Recent reactive-particle-tracking (RPT) algorithms can, by separate mechanisms, simulate 1) smaller-scale mixing by inter-particle mass transfer, and 2) mass spreading by traditional random walks. To test the supposition that the RPT can accurately track these separate mechan…
Inertial lift forces are exploited within inertial microfluidic devices to position, segregate, and sort particles or droplets. However the forces and their focusing positions can currently only be predicted by numerical simulations, making rational device design very difficult. Here we develop theory for the forces on particles in microchannel geometries. We use numerical experiments to dissect the dominant balances within the Navier-Stokes equations and derive an asymptotic model to predict the lateral force on the particle as a function of particle size. Our asymptotic model is valid for a …
The convection velocity of localized wave packet in plane-Poiseuille flow is found to be determined by a solitary wave at the centerline of a downstream vortex dipole in its mean field after deducting the basic flow. The fluctuation component following the vortex dipole oscillates with a global frequency selected by the upstream marginal absolute instability, and propagates obeying the local dispersion relation of the mean flow. By applying localized initial disturbances, a nonzero wave-packet density is achieved at the threshold state, suggesting a first order transition.
Particles migrate in the transverse direction of the flow due to the existence of normal stress anisotropy in weakly viscoelastic liquids. We test the ability of theoretical predictions to predict the transverse velocity migration of particles in a confined Poiseuille flow according to the viscoelastic constitutive parameters of dilute polymers solutions. Firstly, we carefully characterize the viscoelastic properties of two families of dilute polymer solutions at various concentrations using shear rheometry and capillary breakup experiments. Secondly, we develop a specific 3D particle tracking…
Previous work on solute transport with sorption in Poiseuille flow has reached contradictory conclusions. Some have concluded that sorption increases mean solute transport velocity and decreases dispersion relative to a tracer, while others have concluded the opposite. Here we resolve this contradiction by deriving a series solution for the transient evolution that recovers previous results in the appropriate limits. This solution shows a transition in solute transport behavior from early to late time that is captured by the first- and zeroth-order terms. Mean solute transport velocity is incr…
We analyze the dynamics of a microswimmer in pressure-driven Poiseuille flow, where fluid inertia is small but non-negligible. Using perturbation theory and the reciprocal theorem, we show that in addition to the classical inertial lift of passive particles, the active nature generates a `swimming lift', which we evaluate for neutral and pusher/puller-type swimmers. Accounting for fluid inertia engenders a rich spectrum of novel complex dynamics including bistable states, where tumbling coexists with stable centerline swimming or swinging. The dynamics is sensitive to the swimmer's hydrodynami…
The migration of a Brownian fluid droplet in a parallel-plate microchannel was investigated using dissipative particle dynamics computer simulations. In a Newtonian solvent, the droplet migrated toward the channel walls due to inertial effects at the studied flow conditions, in agreement with theoretical predictions and recent simulations. However, the droplet focused onto the channel centerline when polymer chains were added to the solvent. Focusing was typically enhanced for longer polymers and higher polymer concentrations with a nontrivial flow-rate dependence due to droplet and polymer de…
We use a stochastic approach to show how Taylor dispersion is affected by kinetic processes of adsorption and desorption onto surfaces. A general theory is developed, from which we derive explicitly the dispersion coefficients of canonical examples like Poiseuille flows in planar and cylindrical geometries, both in constant and sinusoidal velocity fields. These results open the way for the measurement of adsorption and desorption rate constants using stationary flows and molecular sorting using the stochastic resonance of the adsorption and desorption processes with the oscillatory velocity fi…
Here we report some interesting new features of the spatio-temporal instability of the incompressible plane Couette-Poiseuille flow (CPF). First of all, this flow represents the first instance of a "non-inflectional" absolute instability, within constant-viscosity formulation, which is triggered when one of the plates moves opposite to the bulk motion. More strikingly, with further increase in the negative plate motion, the absolute instability ($\textrm{AI}$) transitions to an "upstream" convective instability ($\textrm{CI}^-$), wherein an unstable wave packet moves opposite to the direction …
Recent experimental studies have shown that particle transfer across streamlines can be controlled passively using stratified flows of co-flowing streams at a finite Reynolds number. The stratification modifies the forces acting on particles through the curvature of the undisturbed velocity profile. In this study, we numerically analyze the particle migration in stratified flow of two liquids of different viscosities flowing parallel to each other between two infinite parallel plates. Particle migration in two different flow fields is considered: (i) Couette flow and (ii) Poiseuille flow. A nu…
Most of the works on the dispersion of droplets and their COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease) implications address droplets' dynamics in quiescent environments. As most droplets in a common situation are immersed in external flows (such as ambient flows), we consider the effect of canonical flow profiles namely, shear flow, Poiseuille flow, and unsteady shear flow on the transport of spherical droplets of radius ranging from 5$μ$m to 100 $μ$m, which are characteristic lengths in human talking, coughing or sneezing processes. The dynamics we employ satisfies the Maxey-Riley (M-R) equation. An order-…
Surfactant solutions exhibit multilamellar surfactant vesicles (MLVs) under flow conditions and in concentration ranges which are found in a large number of industrial applications. MLVs are typically formed from a lamellar phase and play an important role in determining the rheological properties of surfactant solutions. Despite the wide literature on the collective dynamics of flowing MLVs, investigations on the flow behavior of single MLVs are scarce. In this work, we investigate a concentrated aqueous solution of linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (HLAS), characterized by MLVs dispersed in …
We consider the nonlinear optimisation of irreversible mixing induced by an initial finite amplitude perturbation of a statically stable density-stratified fluid. A constant pressure gradient is imposed in a plane two-dimensional channel. We consider flows with a finite Péclet number $Pe=500$ and Prandtl number $Pr=1$, and a range of bulk Richardson numbers $Ri_b \in [0,1]$. We use the constrained variational direct-adjoint-looping (DAL) method to solve two optimization problems, extending the optimal mixing results of Foures et al. (2014) to stratified flows, where the mixing of the scalar de…

Particles transported in fluid flows, such as cells, polymers, or nanorods, are rarely spherical. In this study, we numerically and theoretically investigate the dispersion of an initially localized patch of passive elongated Brownian particles constrained to one degree of rotational freedom in a two-dimensional Poiseuille flow, demonstrating that elongated particles exhibit an enhanced longitudinal dispersion. In a shear flow, the rods translate due to advection and diffusion and rotate due to rotational diffusion and their classical Jeffery's orbit. The magnitude of the enhanced dispersion d…
An interface between two miscible fluids is transient, existing as a non-equilibrium state before complete molecular mixing is reached. However, during the existence of such an interface, which typically be at short timescales, composition gradients at the boundary between the two liquids cause stresses effectively mimicking an interfacial tension. Here, we combine numerical modelling and experiments to study the influence of an effective interfacial tension between a colloidal fibre dispersion and its own solvent on the flow in a microfluidic system. In a flow-focusing channel, the dispersion…
We investigate Brownian noise effects on magnetic focusing of prolate and oblate spheroids carrying permanent magnetic dipoles in channel (Poiseuille) flow subject to a uniform magnetic field. The focusing is effected by the low-Reynolds-number wall-induced hydrodynamic lift which can be tuned via tilt angle of the field relative to the flow direction. This mechanism is incorporated in a steady-state Smoluchowski equation that we solve numerically to analyze the noise effects through the joint position-orientation probability distribution function of spheroids within the channel. The results f…
Finite size effects can lead neutrally buoyant particles to exhibit different dynamics than tracer particles, and can alter their transport properties in fluid flows. Here we investigate the effect of the particle's shape on their dispersion in 2-dimensional complex flows. Combining numerical simulations with laboratory experiments, we show that particles with isotropic and anisotropic shapes exhibit different Lagrangian coherent structures, resulting in distinct dispersion phenomena within a given flow field. Experiments with rod shaped particles show a focusing effect in the vicinity of vort…
This study provides sufficient conditions for the temporal monotonic decay of enstrophy for two-dimensional perturbations traveling in the incompressible, viscous, plane Poiseuille and Couette flows. Extension of J. L. Synge's procedure (1938) to the initial-value problem allowed us to find the region of the wavenumber-Reynolds number map where the enstrophy of any initial disturbance cannot grow. This region is wider than the kinetic energy's one. We also show that the parameters space is split in two regions with clearly distinct propagation and dispersion properties.
We use a rigid axisymetric microfluidic flow focusing device to produce monodisperse bubbles, dispersed in a surfactant solution. The gas volume fraction of the dispersion collected out of this device can be as large as 90%, demonstrating that foam with solid-like viscoelastic properties can be produced in this way. The polydispersity of the bubbles is so low that we observe crystallization of our foam. We measure the diameter of the bubbles and compare these data to recent theoretical predictions. The good control over bubble size and foam gas volume fraction shows that our device is a flexib…
There is much current interest in modelling suspensions of algae and other micro-organisms for biotechnological exploitation, and many bioreactors are of tubular design. Using generalized Taylor dispersion theory, we develop a population-level swimming-advection-diffusion model for suspensions of micro-organisms in a vertical pipe flow. In particular, a combination of gravitational and viscous torques acting on individual cells can affect their swimming behaviour, which is termed gyrotaxis. This typically leads to local cell drift and diffusion in a suspension of cells. In a flow in a pipe, sm…
Hydroelastic surface waves propagate at the surface of water covered by a thin elastic sheet and can be directly measured with accurate space and time resolution. We present an experimental approach using hydroelastic waves that allows us to control waves down to the sub-wavelength scale. We tune the wave dispersion relation by varying locally the properties of the elastic cover and we introduce a local index contrast. This index contrast is independent of the frequency leading to a dispersion-free Snell-Descartes law for hydroelastic waves. We then show experimental evidence of broadband focu…
This article is a brief review of the results of studying the collapse of sound waves in media with positive dispersion, which is described in terms of the three-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. The KP instability of one-dimensional solitons in the long-wavelength limit is considered using the expansion for the corresponding spectral problem. It is shown that the KP instability also takes place for two-dimensional solitons in the framework of the three-dimensional KP equation with positive dispersion. According to B.B. Kadomtsev this instability belongs to the self-focusing ty…
The influence of an axial through-flow on the spatiotemporal growth behavior of different vortex structures in the Taylor-Couette system with radius ratio eta=0.5 is determined. The Navier Stokes equations (NSE) linearized around the basic Couette-Poiseuille flow are solved numerically with a shooting method in a wide range of through-flow strengths Re and different rates of co- and counterrotating cylinders for toroidally closed vortices with azimuthal wave number m=0 and for spiral vortex flow with m=+1 and m=-1. For each of these three different vortex varieties we have investigated (i) axi…
We present an investigation of the fundamental physical processes involved in deep water wave breaking. Our motivation is to identify the underlying reason causing the deficiency of the eddy viscosity breaking model (EVBM) in predicting surface elevation for strongly nonlinear waves. Owing to the limitation of experimental methods in the provision of high-resolution flow information, we propose a numerical methodology by developing an EVBM enclosed standalone fully-nonlinear quasi-potential (FNP) flow model and a coupled FNP plus Navier-Stokes flow model. The numerical models were firstly veri…
When two miscible fluids are brought into contact with each other, the concentration gradients induce stresses. These are referred to as Korteweg stresses and are analogous to interfacial tension between two immiscible fluids, thereby acting as an effective interfacial tension (EIT) in inhomogeneous miscible systems. EIT governs the formation of a viscous thread in flow-focusing of two miscible fluids. To further investigate its significance, we have studied thread formation of a colloidal dispersion focused by its own solvent. Experiments are combined with three-dimensional numerical models t…
