Multivariate hypergeometric functions associated with toric varieties were introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Singularities of such functions are discriminants, that is, divisors projectively dual to torus orbit closures. We show that most of these potential denominators never appear in rational hypergeometric functions. We conjecture that the denominator of any rational hypergeometric function is a product of resultants, that is, a product of special discriminants arising from Cayley configurations. This conjecture is proved for toric hypersurfaces and for toric varieties of dimension at most three. Toric residues are applied to show that every toric resultant appears in the denominator of some rational hypergeometric function.
We describe the structure of all codimension-two lattice configurations $A$ which admit a stable rational $A$-hypergeometric function, that is a rational function $F$ all whose partial derivatives are non zero, and which is a solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system of partial differential equations defined by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We show, moreover, that all stable rational $A$-hypergeometric functions may be described by toric residues and apply our results to study the rationality of bivariate series whose coefficients are quotients of factorials of linear forms.
A binomial residue is a rational function defined by a hypergeometric integral whose kernel is singular along binomial divisors. Binomial residues provide an integral representation for rational solutions of A-hypergeometric systems of Lawrence type. The space of binomial residues of a given degree, modulo those which are polynomial in some variable, has dimension equal to the Euler characteristic of the matroid associated with A.
We introduce a notion of balanced configurations of vectors. This is motivated by the study of rational A-hypergeometric functions in the sense of Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We classify balanced configurations of seven plane vectors up to GL(2,R) equivalence and deduce that the only gkz-rational toric four-folds in complex projective space P^6 are those varieties associated with an essential Cayley configuration. In this case, we study a suitable hyperplane arrangement and show that all rational A-hypergeometric functions may be described in terms of toric residues.
In the previous paper by Asakura-Otsubo-Terasoma, we prove that the special values of the hypergeometric function 3F2 at 1 are linear combinations of logarithms of algebraic numbers and 1 over algebraic numbers, if exponents are rational numbers satisfying a certain arithmetic condition. Aoki and Shioda completely classified these sets of rational numbers satisfying this condition in connection with Hodge cycles on Fermat surfaces. In this paper, we give an explicit expression of special values of hypergoemetricy 3F2 which does not belong to exceptional characters.
We formulate general conjectures about the relationship between the A-model connection on the cohomology of a $d$-dimensional Calabi-Yau complete intersection $V$ of $r$ hypersurfaces $V_1, \ldots, V_r$ in a toric variety ${\bf P}_Σ$ and the system of differential operators annihilating the special hypergeometric function $Φ_0$ depending on the fan $Σ$. In this context, the Mirror Symmetry phenomenon can be interpreted as the following twofold characterization of the series $Φ_0$. First, $Φ_0$ is defined by intersection numbers of rational curves in ${\bf P}_Σ$ with the hypersurfaces $V_i$ and…
We show that the results we had obtained on diagonals of nine and ten parameters families of rational functions using creative telescoping, yielding modular forms expressed as pullbacked $ _2F_1$ hypergeometric functions, can be obtained, much more efficiently, calculating the $ j$-invariant of an elliptic curve canonically associated with the denominator of the rational functions. In the case where creative telescoping yields pullbacked $ _2F_1$ hypergeometric functions, we generalize this result to other families of rational functions in three, and even more than three, variables. We also ge…
Let $A$ be a set of $N$ vectors in ${\mathbb Z}^n$ and let $v$ be a vector in ${\mathbb C}^N$ that has minimal negative support for $A$. Such a vector $v$ gives rise to a formal series solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system with parameter $β= Av$. If $v$ lies in ${\mathbb Q}^n$, then this series has rational coefficients. Let $p$ be a prime number. We characterize those $v$ whose coordinates are rational, $p$-integral, and lie in the closed interval $[-1,0]$ for which the corresponding normalized series solution has $p$-integral coefficients.
In a joint paper [4] by Otsubo, Terasoma and the first author, we proved that the special value 3F2(a,b,q;a+b,q;1) of the generalized hypergeometric function is a linear combination of log of algebraic numbers if the triplet (a,b,q) of rational numbers satisfies a certain numerical condition. However there remains a question how to obtain explicit descriptions of the values. In this paper, we give a method to do this, which is a further development of the technique in [4].
To a torus action on a complex vector space, Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky introduce a system of differential equations, called the GKZ hypergeometric system. Its solutions are GKZ hypergeometric functions. We study the $\ell$-adic counterpart of the GKZ hypergeometric system, which we call the $\ell$-adic GKZ hypergeometric sheaf. It is an object in the derived category of $\ell$-adic sheaves on the affine space over a finite field. Traces of Frobenius on stalks of this object at rational points of the affine space define the hypergeometric functions over the finite field introduced by Gel…
We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities r…
For certain class of hypergeometric functions ${}_3F_2$ with rational parameters, we give a sufficient condition for the special value at $1$ to be expressed in terms of logarithms of algebraic numbers. We give two proofs, both of which are algebro-geometric and related to higher regulators.
In this paper, we prove that the generalized Brézin-Gross-Witten tau-function is a hypergeometric solution of the BKP hierarchy with simple weight generating function. We claim that it describes a spin version of the strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. A family of the hypergeometric tau-functions of the BKP hierarchy, corresponding to the rational weight generating functions, is investigated. In particular, the cut-and-join operators are constructed, and the explicit description of the BKP Sato Grassmannian points is derived. Representatives of this family can be associated with interesting fam…
We give an explicit description of a syntomic regulator of a certain class of fibrations which we call hypergeometric fibrations. The description involves hypergeometric functions.
We give a sufficient condition for that the hypergeometric function 3F2 is a linear combination of the logarithmic function. The proof is based on the regulator formula which we proved in another preprint, arXiv:1709.04144.
A celebrated theorem of Klein implies that any hypergeometric differential equation with algebraic solutions is a pull-back of one of the few standard hypergeometric equations with algebraic solutions. The most interesting cases are hypergeometric equations with tetrahedral, octahedral or icosahedral monodromy groups. We give an algorithm for computing Klein's pull-back coverings in these cases, based on certain explicit expressions (Darboux evaluations) of algebraic hypergeometric functions. The explicit expressions can be computed using contiguous relations and a data base of simplest Darbou…
The hypergeometric functions ${}_nF_{n-1}$ are higher transcendental functions, but for certain parameter values they become algebraic, because the monodromy of the defining hypergeometric differential equation becomes finite. It is shown that many algebraic ${}_nF_{n-1}$'s, for which the finite monodromy is irreducible but imprimitive, can be represented as combinations of certain explicitly algebraic functions of a single variable; namely, the roots of trinomials. This generalizes a result of Birkeland, and is derived as a corollary of a family of binomial coefficient identities that is of i…
We generalize the known constructions of A-hypergeometric functions. In particular, we show that periods of middle dimension on affine or projective complex algebraic varieties are A-hypergeometric functions of coefficients of polynomial equations of these varieties.
