This is an account of one man's view of the current perspective of theory of topological groups. We survey some recent developments which are, from our viewpoint, indicative of the future directions, concentrating on actions of topological groups on compacta, embeddings of topological groups, free topological groups, and `massive' groups (such as groups of homeomorphisms of compacta and groups of isometries of various metric spaces).
In this paper we detect topological Clifford semigroups which are embeddable into Tychonoff products of topological semilattices and cones over topological groups. Also we detect topological Clifford semigroups which embed into compact topological Clifford semigroups.
Topological properties of the free topological group and the free abelian topological group on a space have been thoroughly studied since the 1940s. In this paper, we study the free topological $\mathbb{R}$-vector space $V(X)$ on $X$. We show that $V(X)$ is a quotient of the free abelian topological group on $[-1,1]\times X$, and use this to prove topological vector space analogues of existing results for free topological groups on pseudocompact spaces. As an application, we show that certain families of subspaces of $V(X)$ satisfy the so-called $\textit{algebraic colimit property}$ defined in…
We present results on simplifying an acting group preserving properties of actions: transitivity, being a coset space and preserving a fixed equiuniformity in case of a $G$-Tychonoff space.
Known and new results on free Boolean topological groups are collected. An account of properties which these groups share with free or free Abelian topological groups and properties specific of free Boolean groups is given. Special emphasis is placed on the application of set-theoretic methods to the study of Boolean topological groups.
In this paper we answer the question of T. Banakh and M. Zarichnyi constructing a copy of the Fréchet-Urysohn fan $S_\w$ in a topological group $G$ admitting a functorial embedding $[0,1]\subset G$. The latter means that each autohomeomorphism of $[0,1]$ extends to a continuous homomorphism of $G$. This implies that many natural free topological group constructions (e.g. the constructions of the Markov free topological group, free abelian topological group, free totally bounded group, free compact group) applied to a Tychonov space $X$ containing a topological copy of the space $\IQ$ of ration…
In this paper we investigate hereditarily normal topological groups and their subspaces. We prove that every compact subspace of a hereditarily normal topological group is metrizable. To prove this statement we first show that a hereditarily normal topological group with a non-trivial convergent sequence has $G_δ$-diagonal. This implies, in particular, that every countably compact subset of a hereditarily normal topological group with a non-trivial convergent sequence is metrizable. Another corollary is that under the Proper Forcing Axiom, every countably compact subset of a hereditarily norma…
In this paper we give conditions under which a topological semigroup can be embedded algebraically and topologically into a compact topological group. We prove that every feebly compact regular first countable cancellative commutative topological semigroup with open shifts is a topological group, as well as every connected locally compact Hausdorff cancellative commutative topological monoid with open shifts. Finally, we use these results to give sufficient conditions on a topological semigroup that guarantee it to have countable cellularity.
Based on the concepts of $\mathbb{R}$-factorizable topological groups and $\mathcal{M}$-factorizable topological groups, we introduce four classes of factorizabilities on topological groups, named $P\mathcal{M}$-factorizabilities, $Pm$-factorizabilities, $S\mathcal{M}$-factorizabilities and $PS\mathcal{M}$-factorizabilities, respectively. Some properties of the four classes of spaces are investigated.
We survey different topologizations of the set $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of all closed subgroups of a topological group $G$ and demonstrate some applications in Topological Grous, Model Theory, Geometric Group Theory, Topological Dynamics.
Two (strongly) zero-dimensional Lindelöf topological groups whose product has positive covering dimension are constructed. An example of a Lindelöf (strongly) zero-dimensional space whose free and free Abelian topological groups are not strongly zero-dimensional is given.
Given a topological group $G$ that can be embedded as a topological subgroup into some topological vector space (over the field of reals) we say that $G$ has invariant linear span if all linear spans of $G$ under arbitrary embeddings into topological vector spaces are isomorphic as topological vector spaces. For an arbitrary set $A$ let $\mathbb{Z}^{(A)}$ be the direct sum of $|A|$-many copies of the discrete group of integers endowed with the Tychonoff product topology. We show that the topological group $\mathbb{Z}^{(A)}$ has invariant linear span. This answers a question of D. Dikranjan et …
In this work, we will introduce the notion of generalized topological groups using generalized topological structure and generalized continuity defined by ?A. Cs?asz?ar [2]. We will discuss some basic properties of this kind of structures and connectedness properties of this structures are given. Keywords: Generalized topology; generalized continuity; generalized topological groups; generalized connectedness.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions under which a subsemigroup of a topological group is a subgroup, adding to the results given in \cite{Kosh, can, axioms, forum, Hof, cc, locally} where conditions exist (such as locally compactness, compactness, feeble compactness and sequential compactness) for a semigroup to be a group. In our work we proved that closed precompact subsemigroups of topological groups are semigroups, just like open pseudocompact monoids of topological groups.
We study topological groups of monotonic autohomeomorphisms on a generalized ordered space $L$. We find a condition that is necessary and sufficient for the set of all monotonic autohomeomorphisms on $L$ along with the function composition and the topology of point-wise convergence to be a topological group.
Topological groups whose underlying spaces are basically disconnected, $F$-, or $F'$-spaces but not $P$-spaces are considered. It is proved, in particular, that the existence of a Lindelöf basically disconnected topological group which is not a $P$-space is equivalent to the existence of a Boolean basically disconnected Lindelöf group of countable pseudocharacter, that free and free Abelian topological groups of zero-dimensional non-$P$-spaces are never $F'$-spaces, and that the existence of a free Boolean $F'$-group which is not a $P$-space is equivalent to that of selective ultrafilters on $…
It is a simple fact that a subgroup generated by a subset $A$ of an abelian group is the direct sum of the cyclic groups $\langle a\rangle$, $a\in A$ if and only if the set $A$ is independent. In [5] the concept of an $independent$ set in an abelian group was generalized to a $topologically$ $independent$ $set$ in a topological abelian group (these two notions coincide in discrete abelian groups). It was proved that a topological subgroup generated by a subset $A$ of an abelian topological group is the Tychonoff direct sum of the cyclic topological groups $\langle a\rangle$, $a\in A$ if and on…
It is proved that, for a wide class of topological abelian groups (locally quasi--convex groups for which the canonical evaluation from the group into its Pontryagin bidual group is onto) the arc component of the group is exactly the union of the one--parameter subgroups. We also prove that for metrizable separable locally arc-connected reflexive groups, the exponential map from the Lie algebra into the group is open.
We investigate some properties of topological groups related to disconnectedness or Archimedeanness. We prove or disprove the preservation of those under operations as subgroups, quotients, products, etc. Characterizations of non-Archimedeanness are obtained by using embedding into universal groups. We also clarify the differences between the properties by constructing miscellaneous Polish groups.
We endow a topological group $(G, τ)$ with a coarse structure defined by the smallest group ideal $S_τ $ on $G$ containing all converging sequences with their limits and denote the obtained coarse group by $(G, S_τ)$. If $G$ is discrete then $(G, S_τ)$ is a finitary coarse group studding in Geometric Group Theory. The main result: if a topological abelian group $(G, τ)$ contains a non-trivial converging sequence then $asdim \ (G, S_τ)= \infty $.
A Hausdorff topological group topology on a group $G$ is the minimum (Hausdorff) group topology if it is contained in every Hausdorff group topology on $G$. For every compact metrizable space $X$ containing an open $n$-cell, $n\ge2$, the homeomorphism group $H(X)$ has no minimum Hausdorff group topology. The homeomorphism groups of the Cantor set and the Hilbert cube have no minimum group topology. For every compact metrizable space $X$ containing a dense open one-manifold, $H(X)$ has the minimum group topology. Some, but not all, oligomorphic groups have the minimum group topology.
Is it true that the left and the right uniformities on a topological group coincide as soon as every left uniformly continuous real valued function is right uniformly continuous? This question is known as Itzkowitz's problem, and it is still open. We show that the generalization of the problem to homogeneous factor-spaces of topological groups has a negative answer.
We show that it is consistent to have an uncountable sequential group of intermediate sequential order while no countable such groups exist. This is proved by adding $ω_2$ Cohen reals to a model of $\diamondsuit$.
We show that if a topological or paratopological group $G$ contains a stationary subset of some regular uncountable cardinal, then $G$ contains a subspace which is not collectionwise normal. This statement implies that if a monotonically normal space (in particular, any generalized ordered space) is a paratopological group then the space is hereditarily paracompact.
In this paper we introduce a weak version of level and epigraph convergence for level functions on topological spaces. In the particular case of topological groups we are able to define convolutions in the set of level functions and show that any such function is the limit in level and epigraph of robust functions.
We consider a few types of bounded homomorphisms on a topological group. These classes of bounded homomorphisms are, in a sense, weaker than the class of continuous homomorphisms. We show that with appropriate topologies each class of these homomorphisms on a complete topological group forms a complete topological group.
The topological fundamental group $π_{1}^{top}$ is a homotopy invariant finer than the usual fundamental group. It assigns to each space a quasitopological group and is discrete on spaces which admit universal covers. For an arbitrary space $X$, we compute the topological fundamental group of the suspension space $Σ(X_+)$ and find that $π_{1}^{top}(Σ(X_+))$ either fails to be a topological group or is the free topological group on the path component space of $X$. Using this computation, we provide an abundance of counterexamples to the assertion that all topological fundamental groups are topo…
A topological group $X$ is called $duoseparable$ if there exists a countable set $S\subseteq X$ such that $SUS=X$ for any neighborhood $U\subseteq X$ of the unit. We construct a functor $F$ assigning to each (abelian) topological group $X$ a duoseparable (abelain-by-cyclic) topological group $FX$, containing an isomorphic copy of $X$. In fact, the functor $F$ is defined on the category of unital topologized magmas. Also we prove that each $σ$-compact locally compact abelian topological group embeds into a duoseparable locally compact abelian-by-countable topological group.
In this paper, we pose the concepts of pre-topological groups and some generalizations of pre-topological groups. First, we systematically investigate some basic properties of pre-topological groups; in particular, we prove that each $T_{0}$ pre-topological group is regular and every almost topological group is completely regular which extends A.A. Markov's theorem to the class of almost topological groups. Moreover, it is shown that an almost topological group is $τ$-narrow if and only if it can be embedded as a subgroup of a pre-topological product of almost topological groups of weight less…
This paper is devoted to the study of a natural group topology on the fundamental group which remembers local properties of spaces forgotten by covering space theory and weak homotopy type. It is known that viewing the fundamental group as the quotient of the loop space often fails to result in a topological group; we use free topological groups to construct a topology which promotes the fundamental group of any space to topological group structure. The resulting invariant, denoted $π_{1}^τ$, takes values in the category of topological groups, can distinguish spaces with isomorphic fundamental…
For a locally path connected topological space, the topological fundamental group is discrete if and only if the space is semilocally simply-connected. While functoriality of the topological fundamental group for arbitrary topological spaces remains an open question, the topological fundamental group is always a homogeneous space.
The theory of covering spaces is often used to prove the Nielsen-Schreier theorem, which states that every subgroup of a free group is free. We apply the more general theory of semicovering spaces to obtain analogous subgroup theorems for topological groups: Every open subgroup of a free Graev topological group is a free Graev topological group. An open subgroup of a free Markov topological group is a free Markov topological group if and only if it is disconnected.
Locally solid Riesz spaces have been widely investigated in the past several decades; but locally solid topological lattice-ordered groups seem to be largely unexplored. The paper is an attempt to initiate a relatively systematic study of locally solid topological lattice-ordered groups. We give both Robert-Namioka-type characterization and Fremlin-type characterization of locally solid topological lattice-ordered groups. In particular, we show that a group topology on a lattice-ordered group is locally solid if and only if it is generated by a family of translation-invariant lattice pseudomet…
In this note for a topological group $G$, we introduce a bounded subset of $G$ and we find some relationships of this definition with other topological properties of $G$.
We give a "limit-free formula" simplifying the computation of the topological entropy for topological automorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups. This result allows us to extend several basic properties of the topological entropy known to hold for compact groups.
We show that every Hausdorff topological group is a group retract of a minimal topological group. This first was conjectured by Pestov in 1983. Our main result leads to a solution of some problems of Arhangelskii. One of them is the problem about representability of a group as a quotient of a minimal group (Problem 519 in the first edition of "Open Problems in Topology"). Our approach is based on generalized Heisenberg groups and on groups arising from group representations on Banach spaces and in bilinear mappings.
Let $(U, R)$ be an approximation space with $U$ being non-empty set and $R$ being an equivalence relation on $U$, and let $\overline{G}$ and $\underline{G}$ be the upper approximation and the lower approximation of subset $G$ of $U$. A topological rough group $G$ is a rough group $G=(\underline{G}, \overline{G})$ endowed with a topology, which is induced from the upper approximation space $\overline{G}$, such that the product mapping $f: G\times G\rightarrow \overline{G}$ and the inverse mapping are continuous. In the class of topological rough groups, the relations of some separation axioms a…
We exhibit a map f between aspherical spaces X and Y such that f induces an isomorphism on homotopy groups but, with natural topologies, X and Y fail to have homeomorphic fundamental groups. Thus the topological fundamental group has the capacity to distinguish homotopy type when the Whitehead theorem fails.
Given a Tychonoff space $X$, let $F(X)$ and $A(X)$ be respectively the free topological group and the free Abelian topological group over $X$ in the sense of Markov. In this paper, we provide some topological properties of $X$ whenever one of $F(X)$, $A(X)$, some finite level of $F(X)$ and some finite level of $A(X)$ is $q$-space (in particular, locally $ω$-bounded spaces and $r$-spaces), which give some partial answers to a problem posed in [11].
We discuss various modifications of separability, precompactnmess and narrowness in topological groups and test those modifications in the permutation groups $S(X)$ and $S_{<ω}(X)$.
A characterization of regular topological fundamental groups yields a `no retraction theorem' for spaces constructed in similar fashion to the Hawaiian earring.
It is shown that every separable abelian topological group is isomorphic with a topological subgroup of a monothetic group (that is, a topological group with a single topological generator). In particular, every separable metrizable abelian group embeds into a metrizable monothetic group. More generally, we describe all topological groups that can be embedded into monothetic groups: they are exactly abelian topological groups of weight $\leq\frak c$ covered by countably many translations of every nonempty open subset.
We prove that any topological group $G$ containing a subspace $X$ of the Sorgenfrey line has spread $s(G)\ge s(X\times X)$. Under OCA, each topological group containing an uncountable subspace of the Sorgenfrey line has uncountable spread. This implies that under OCA a cometrizable topological group $G$ is cosmic if and only if it has countable spread. On the other hand, under CH there exists a cometrizable Abelian topological group that has hereditarily Lindelöf countable power and contains an uncountable subspace of the Sorgenfrey line. This cometrizable topological group has countable sprea…
Suppose G is a topological group containing a (closed) topological copy of the Frechet-Urysohn fan. If G is a perfectly normal sequential space (a normal k-space) then every closed metrizable subset in $G$ is locally compact. Applying this result to topological groups whose underlying topological space can be written as a direct limit of a sequence of closed metrizable subsets, we get that every such a group either is metrizable or is homeomorphic to the product of a $k_ω$-space and a discrete space.
We present several known and new results on the Baire category properties in topological groups. In particular, we prove that a Baire topological group $X$ is metrizable if and only if $X$ is point-cosmic if and only if $X$ is a $σ$-space. A topological group $X$ is Choquet if and only if its Raikov completion $\bar X$ is Choquet and $X$ is $G_δ$-dense in $\bar X$. A topological group $X$ is complete-metrizable if and only if $X$ is a point-cosmic Choquet space if and only if $X$ is a Choquet $σ$-space. Finally, we pose several open problem, in particular, if each Choquet topological group is …
Let $A$ be an abelian topological $G$-module. We give an interpretion for the second cohomology, $H^{2}(G,A)$, of $G$ with coefficients in $A$. As a result we show that if $P$ is a projective topological group, then $H^{2}(P,A)=0$ for every abelian topological $P$-module $A$.
A topological group is said to be ambitable if each uniformly bounded uniformly equicontinuous set of functions on the group with its right uniformity is contained in an ambit. For n=0,1,2,..., every locally aleph_n bounded topological group is either precompact or ambitable. In the familiar semigroups constructed over ambitable groups, topological centres have an effective characterization.
For every Tikhonov space $X$ the free abelian topological group $A(X)$ and the free locally convex vector space $L(X)$ admit a topologically faithful unitary representation. For compact spaces $X$ this is due to Jorge Galindo.
We study the topological structure of the direct limit $\glim G_n$ of a tower of topological groups $(G_n)$ in the category of topological groups and show that under some conditions on the tower $(G_n)$ the topology of $\glim G_n$ coincides with the topology of the direct limit $\ulim G_n$ of the groups $G_n$ endowed with the Roelcke uniformity in the category of uniform spaces.
