A well-known theorem of Blind and Mani says that every simple polytope is uniquely determined by its graph. Kalai gave a very short and elegant proof of this result using the concept of acyclic orientations. As it turns out, Kalai's proof can be suitably generalized without much effort. We apply our results to a special class of cubical polytopes.
Blind and Mani (1987) proved that the entire combinatorial structure (the vertex-facet incidences) of a simple convex polytope is determined by its abstract graph. Their proof is not constructive. Kalai (1988) found a short, elegant, and algorithmic proof of that result. However, his algorithm has always exponential running time. We show that the problem to reconstruct the vertex-facet incidences of a simple polytope P from its graph can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem that is strongly dual to the problem of finding an abstract objective function on P (i.e., a shelling or…
We present a partial description of which polytopes are reconstructible from their graphs. This is an extension of work by Blind and Mani (1987) and Kalai (1988), which showed that simple polytopes can be reconstructed from their graphs. In particular, we introduce a notion of $h$-nearly simple and prove that 1-nearly simple and 2-nearly simple polytopes are reconstructible from their graphs. We also give an example of a 3-nearly simple polytope which is not reconstructible from its graph. Furthermore, we give a partial list of polytopes which are reconstructible from their graphs in an entire…
A conjecture of Kalai from 1994 posits that for an arbitrary $2\leq k\leq \lfloor d/2 \rfloor$, the combinatorial type of a simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ is uniquely determined by the $(k-1)$-skeleton of $P$ (given as an abstract simplicial complex) together with the space of affine $k$-stresses on $P$. We establish the first non-trivial case of this conjecture, namely, the case of $k=2$. We also prove that for a general $k$, Kalai's conjecture holds for the class of $k$-neighborly polytopes.
A renowned theorem of Blind and Mani, with a constructive proof by Kalai and an efficiency proof by Friedman, shows that the whole face lattice of a simple polytope can be determined from its graph. This is part of a broader story of reconstructing face lattices from partial information, first considered comprehensively in Grünbaum's 1967 book. This survey paper includes varied results and open questions by many researchers on simplicial polytopes, nearly simple polytopes, cubical polytopes, zonotopes, crosspolytopes, and Eulerian posets.
We show that by cutting off the vertices and then the edges of neighborly cubical polytopes, one obtains simple 4-dimensional polytopes with n vertices such that all separators of the graph have size at least $Ω(n/\log^{3/2}n)$. This disproves a conjecture by Kalai from 1991/2004.
We show that there are simple 4-dimensional polytopes with n vertices such that all separators of the graph have size at least $Ω(n/\log n)$. This establishes a strong form of a claim by Thurston, for which the construction and proof had been lost. We construct the polytopes by cutting off the vertices and then the edges of a particular type of neighborly cubical polytopes. The graphs of simple polytopes thus obtained are 4-regular; they contain 3-regular "cube-connected cycle graphs" as minors of spanning subgraphs.
In this paper we study the operation of cutting off edges of a simple $3$-polytope $P$ along the graph $Γ$. We give the criterion when the resulting polytope is simple and when it is flag. As a corollary we prove the analog of Eberhard's theorem about the realization of polygon vectors of simple $3$-polytopes for flag polytopes.
The Monotone Upper Bound Problem (Klee, 1965) asks if the number M(d,n) of vertices in a monotone path along edges of a d-dimensional polytope with n facets can be as large as conceivably possible: Is M(d,n) = M_{ubt}(d,n), the maximal number of vertices that a d-polytope with n facets can have according to the Upper Bound Theorem? We show that in dimension d=4, the answer is ``yes'', despite the fact that it is ``no'' if we restrict ourselves to the dual-to-cyclic polytopes. For each n>=5, we exhibit a realization of a polar-to-neighborly 4-dimensional polytope with n facets and a Hamilton pa…
A k-system of the graph G(P) of a simple polytope P is a set of induced subgraphs of G(P) that shares certain properties with the set of subgraphs induced by the k-faces of P. This new concept leads to polynomial-size certificates in terms of G(P) for both the set of vertex sets of facets as well as for abstract objective functions (AOF) in the sense of Kalai. Moreover, it is proved that an acyclic orientation yields an AOF if and only if it induces a unique sink on every 2-face.
For each strongly connected finite-dimensional (pure) simplicial complex we construct a finite group, the group of projectivities of the complex, which is a combinatorial but not a topological invariant. This group is studied for combinatorial manifolds and, in particular, for polytopal simplicial spheres. The results are applied to a coloring problem for simplicial (or, dually, simple) polytopes which arises in the area of toric algebraic varieties.
Problem 4.19 in Ziegler's "Lectures on Polytopes" asserts that every simple $3$-dimensional polytope has the property that its dual can be constructed as the convex hull of a subset of the vertices of the original simple polytope. In this note we state a higher-dimensional analogue of this conjecture and provide a family of counterexamples for dimension $d \geq 3$.
We give an Euler-Maclaurin formula with remainder for the weighted sum of the values of a smooth function on the integral points in a simple integral polytope. Our work generalizes the formula obtained by Karshon, Sternberg and Weitsman in the ''Euler-Maclaurin with remainder for a simple integral polytope''.
We use a version of localization in equivariant cohomology for the norm-square of the moment map, described by Paradan, to give several weighted decompositions for simple polytopes. As an application, we study Euler-Maclaurin formulas.
We study the question of polytopality of graphs: when is a given graph the graph of a polytope? We first review the known necessary conditions for a graph to be polytopal, and we provide several families of graphs which satisfy all these conditions, but which nonetheless are not graphs of polytopes. Our main contribution concerns the polytopality of Cartesian products of non-polytopal graphs. On the one hand, we show that products of simple polytopes are the only simple polytopes whose graph is a product. On the other hand, we provide a general method to construct (non-simple) polytopal produc…
We give a short and simple proof of a recent result of Dobbins that any point in an $nd$-polytope is the barycenter of $n$ points in the $d$-skeleton. This new proof builds on the constraint method that we recently introduced to prove Tverberg-type results.
The paper investigates connections between abstract polytopes and properly edge colored graphs. Given any finite n-edge-colored n-regular graph G, we associate to G a simple abstract polytope P_G of rank n, called the colorful polytope of G, with 1-skeleton isomorphic to G. We investigate the interplay between the geometric, combinatorial, or algebraic properties of the polytope P_G and the combinatorial or algebraic structure of the underlying graph G, focussing in particular on aspects of symmetry. Several such families of colorful polytopes are studied including examples derived from a Cayl…
It is known that polytopes with at most two nonsimple vertices are reconstructible from their graphs, and that $d$-polytopes with at most $d-2$ nonsimple vertices are reconstructible from their 2-skeletons. Here we close the gap between 2 and $d-2$, showing that certain polytopes with more than two nonsimple vertices are reconstructible from their graphs. In particular, we prove that reconstructibility from graphs also holds for $d$-polytopes with $d+k$ vertices and at most $d-k+3$ nonsimple vertices, provided $k\ge 5$. For $k\le4$, the same conclusion holds under a slightly stronger assumptio…
This dissertation investigates the geometric combinatorics of convex polytopes and connections to the behavior of the simplex method for linear programming. We focus our attention on transportation polytopes, which are sets of all tables of non-negative real numbers satisfying certain summation conditions. Transportation problems are, in many ways, the simplest kind of linear programs and thus have a rich combinatorial structure. First, we give new results on the diameters of certain classes of transportation polytopes and their relation to the Hirsch Conjecture, which asserts that the diamete…
We investigate some combinatorial properties of convex polytopes simple in edges. For polytopes whose nonsimple vertices are located sufficiently far one from another, we prove an analog of the Hard Lefschetz theorem. It implies Stanley's conjecture for such polytopes.
We compute the Betti numbers of the geometric spaces associated to nonrational simple convex polytopes and find that they depend on the combinatorial type of the polytope exactly as in the rational case. This shows that the combinatorial features of the starting polytope are encoded in these generalized toric spaces as they are in their rational counterparts.
We introduce the simple extension complexity of a polytope P as the smallest number of facets of any simple (i.e., non-degenerate in the sense of linear programming) polytope which can be projected onto P. We devise a combinatorial method to establish lower bounds on the simple extension complexity and show for several polytopes that they have large simple extension complexities. These examples include both the spanning tree and the perfect matching polytopes of complete graphs, uncapacitated flow polytopes for non-trivially decomposable directed acyclic graphs, hypersimplices, and random 0/1-…
The aim of this work is to introduce several different volume computation methods of the graph polytope associated with various type of finite simple graphs. Among them, we obtained the recursive volume formula (RVF) that is fundamental and most useful to compute the volume of the graph polytope for an arbitrary finite simple graph.
We describe a provably complete algorithm for the generation of a tight, possibly exact superset of all combinatorially distinct simple n-facet polytopes in R^d, along with their graphs, f-vectors, and face lattices. The technique applies repeated cutting planes and planar sweeps to a d-simplex. Our generator has implications for several outstanding problems in polytope theory, including conjectures about the number of distinct polytopes, the edge expansion of polytopal graphs, and the d-step conjecture.
Let P a polytope and let G(P) be the graph of P. Following Gil Kalai, we say that an acyclic orientation O of G(P) is good if, for every non-empty face F of P, the induced graph G(F) has exactly one sink. Gil Kalai gave a simple way to tell a simple polytope from the good orientations of its graph. This article is a broader study of ``good orientations'' (of the graphs) on matroid polytopes.
We give an Euler Maclaurin formula with remainder for the sum of the values of a smooth function on the integral points in a simple integral polytope. This formula is proved by elementary methods.
A simple convex polytope $P$ is \emph{cohomologically rigid} if its combinatorial structure is determined by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. Not every $P$ has this property, but some important polytopes such as simplices or cubes are known to be cohomologically rigid. In this article we investigate the cohomological rigidity of polytopes and establish it for several new classes of polytopes including products of simplices. Cohomological rigidity of $P$ is related to the \emph{bigraded Betti numbers} of its \emph{Stanley--Reisner ring}, another important invariants coming…
Given a (finite) simplicial complex, we define its $i$-th Laplacian polytope as the convex hull of the columns of its $i$-th Laplacian matrix. This extends Laplacian simplices of finite simple graphs, as introduced by Braun and Meyer. After studying basic properties of these polytopes, we focus on the $d$-th Laplacian polytope of the boundary of a $(d+1)$-simplex $\partial(σ_{d+1})$. If $d$ is odd, then as for graphs, the $d$-th Laplacian polytope turns out to be a $(d+1)$-simplex in this case. If $d$ is even, we show that the $d$-th Laplacian polytope of $\partial(σ_{d+1})$ is combinatorially…
We present new pivot rules for the Simplex method for LPs over 0/1 polytopes. We show that the number of non-degenerate steps taken using these rules is strongly polynomial and even linear in the dimension or in the number of variables. Our bounds on the number of steps are asymptotically optimal on several well-known combinatorial polytopes. Our analysis is based on the geometry of 0/1 polytopes and novel modifications to the classical Steepest-Edge and Shadow-Vertex pivot rules. We draw interesting connections between our pivot rules and other well-known algorithms in combinatorial optimizat…
The chromatic number for properly colouring the facets of a combinatorial simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ that is the orbit space of a quasitoric manifold satisfies the inequality $n\leq P^n\leq 2^n-1$. The inequality is sharp for $n=2$ but not for $n=3$ due to the Four Color theorem. In this note, we construct a simple 4-polytope admitting a characteristic map whose chromatic number equals $15$ and deduce that the predicted upper bound is attained for $n=4$. Analogues results are verified for the case of oriented small covers in dimensions $4$ and $5$.
We describe a perturbation method that can be used to reduce the problem of finding the multivariate generating function (MGF) of a non-simple polytope to computing the MGF of simple polytopes. We then construct a perturbation that works for any transportation polytope. We apply this perturbation to the family of central transportation polytopes of order kn x n, and obtain formulas for the MGFs of the feasible cone of each vertex of the polytope and the MGF of the polytope. The formulas we obtain are enumerated by combinatorial objects. A special case of the formulas recovers the results on Bi…
We explore the connection between simple polytopes and self-dual binary codes via the theory of small covers. We first show that a small cover $M^n$ over a simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ produces a self-dual code in the sense of Kreck-Puppe if and only if $P^n$ is $n$-colorable and $n$ is odd. Then we show how to describe such a self-dual binary code in terms of the combinatorial information of $P^n$. Moreover, we can define a family of binary codes $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$, $0\leq k\leq n$, from an arbitrary simple $n$-polytope $P^n$. We will give some necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfr…
This article mainly aims to give combinatorial characterizations and topological descriptions of quasitoric manifolds with string property. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple polytope in dimension 2 and 3 to be realizable as the orbit polytope of a string quasitoric manifold. In particular, a complete description of string quasitoric manifolds over prisms is obtained. On the other hand, we characterize string quasitoric manifolds over $n$-dimensional simple polytopes with no more than $2n+2$ facets. Further results are available when the orbit polytope is the connecte…
Two simple polytopes of dimension 3 having the identical bigraded Betti numbers but non-isomorphic Tor-algebras are presented. These polytopes provide two homotopically different moment-angle manifolds having the same bigraded Betti numbers. These two simple polytopes are the first examples of polytopes that are (toric) cohomologically rigid but not combinatorially rigid.
We prove that, apart from some well-known low-dimensional examples, any compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytope has a pair of disjoint facets. This is one of very few known general results concerning combinatorics of compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes. We also obtain a similar result for simple non-compact polytopes.
Let $d \geq 3$ be an integer. It is known that the number of edges of the edge polytope of the complete graph with $d$ vertices is $d(d-1)(d-2)/2$. In this paper, we study the maximum possible number $μ_d$ of edges of the edge polytope arising from finite simple graphs with $d$ vertices. We show that $μ_{d}=d(d-1)(d-2)/2$ if and only if $3 \leq d \leq 14$. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of $μ_d$. Tran--Ziegler gave a lower bound for $μ_d$ by constructing a random graph. We succeeded in improving this bound by constructing both a non-random graph and a random graph whose compleme…
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off …
The aim of this article is to show the existence, and also give an explicit construction, of infinite sets of orthogonal exponentials for certain families of convex polytopes which include simple-rational polytopes and also non simple polytopes which satisfy other nontrivial conditions. We also show that by considering weight functions one can construct infinite sets of orthogonal exponentials with a positive density by considering orthogonal projections of affine transformations of hypercubes (i.e., zonotopes).
We describe a technique to obtain linear descriptions for polytopes from extended formulations. The simple idea is to first define a suitable lifting function and then to find linear constraints that are valid for the polytope and guarantee lifted points to be contained in the extension. We explain the technique at an example from the literature (matching polytopes), obtain new simple proofs of results on path-set polytopes and small-cliques polytopes, and finally exploit the technique in order to derive linear descriptions of orbisacks, which are special Knapsack polytopes arising in the cont…
Consider the question: Given integers $k<d<n$, does there exist a simple $d$-polytope with $n$ faces of dimension $k$? We show that there exist numbers $G(d,k)$ and $N(d,k)$ such that for $n> N(d,k)$ the answer is yes if and only if $n\equiv 0\quad \pmod {G(d,k)}$. Furthermore, a formula for $G(d,k)$ is given, showing that e.g. $G(d,k)=1$ if $k\ge \left\lfloor\frac{d+1}{2}\right\rfloor$ or if both $d$ and $k$ are even, and also in some other cases (meaning that all numbers beyond $N(d,k)$ occur as the number of $k$-faces of some simple $d$-polytope). This question has previously been studied o…
Our main theoretical result is that, if a simple polytope has a pair of complementary vertices (i.e., two vertices with no facets in common), then it has at least two such pairs, which can be chosen to be disjoint. Using this result, we improve adjacency testing for vertices in both simple and non-simple polytopes: given a polytope in the standard form {x \in R^n | Ax = b and x \geq 0} and a list of its V vertices, we describe an O(n) test to identify whether any two given vertices are adjacent. For simple polytopes this test is perfect; for non-simple polytopes it may be indeterminate, and in…
In this paper we give several criteria for the edge polytope of a fundamental FHM-graph to possess a regular unimodular triangulation in terms of some simple data of the the graph. We further apply our criteria to several examples of graphs and show that their edge polytopes possess a regular unimodular triangulation.
Euler Maclaurin formulas for a polytope express the sum of the values of a function over the lattice points in the polytope in terms of integrals of the function and its derivatives over faces of the polytope or its expansions. Exact Euler Maclaurin formulas [Khovanskii-Pukhlikov, Cappell-Shaneson, Guillemin, Brion-Vergne] apply to exponential or polynomial functions; Euler Maclaurin formulas with remainder [Karshon-Sternberg-Weitsman] apply to more general smooth functions. In this paper we review these results and present proofs of the exact formulas obtained by these authors, using elementa…
Following the seminal work of Padberg on the Boolean quadric polytope $BQP$ and its LP relaxation $BQP_{LP}$, we consider a natural extension: $SATP$ and $SATP_{LP}$ polytopes, with $BQP_{LP}$ being projection of the $SATP_{LP}$ face (and $BQP$ -- projection of the $SATP$ face). We consider a problem of integer recognition: determine whether a maximum of a linear objective function is achieved at an integral vertex of a polytope. Various special instances of 3-SAT problem like NAE-3-SAT, 1-in-3-SAT, weighted MAX-3-SAT, and others can be solved by integer recognition over $SATP_{LP}$. We descri…
A simple polytope $P$ is said to be \emph{B-rigid} if its combinatorial structure is characterized by its Tor-algebra, and is said to be \emph{C-rigid} if its combinatorial structure is characterized by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. It is known that a B-rigid simple polytope is C-rigid. In this paper, we, further, show that the B-rigidity is not equivalent to the C-rigidity.
This paper is a survey on the Lickorish type construction of some kind of closed manifolds over simple convex polytopes. Inspired by Lickorish's theorem, we propose a method to describe certain families of manifolds over simple convex polytopes with torus action. Under this construction, many classical classification results of these families of manifolds could be interpreted by this construction and some further problems will be discussed.
This paper is concerned with the linkedness of Cartesian products of complete graphs. A graph with at least $2k$ vertices is {\it $k$-linked} if, for every set of $2k$ distinct vertices organised in arbitrary $k$ pairs of vertices, there are $k$ vertex-disjoint paths joining the vertices in the pairs. We show that the Cartesian product $K^{d_{1}+1}\times K^{d_{2}+1}$ of complete graphs $K^{d_{1}+1}$ and $K^{d_{2}+1}$ is $\floor{(d_{1}+d_{2})/2}$-linked for $d_{1},d_{2}\ge 2$, and this is best possible. %A polytope is said to be {\it $k$-linked} if its graph is $k$-linked. This result is connec…
We introduce fractional realizations of a graph degree sequence and a closely associated convex polytope. Simple graph realizations correspond to a subset of the vertices of this polytope. We describe properties of the polytope vertices and characterize degree sequences for which each polytope vertex corresponds to a simple graph realization. These include the degree sequences of pseudo-split graphs, and we characterize their realizations both in terms of forbidden subgraphs and graph structure.
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the s…
