This paper is devoted to the geometric analysis of the incompressible averaged Euler equations on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary. The equation also coincides with the model for a second-grade non-Newtonian fluid. We study the analytical and geometrical properties of the Lagrangian flow map. We prove existence and uniqueness of smooth-in-time solutions for initial data in $H^s$, $s > n/2 +1$ by establishing the existence of smooth geodesics of a new weak right invariant metric on new subgroups of the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group. We establish smooth limits of zero viscosity for the second-grade fluids equations even on manifolds with boundary. We prove that the weak curvature operator of the weak invariant metric is continuous in the $H^s$ topology for $s> n/2+2$, thus proving existence and uniqueness for the Jacobi equation. We show that this new metric stabilizes the Lagrangian flow of the original Euler equations by changing the sign of the sectional curvature.
We demonstrate that the solutions to the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) system can develop diferent types of norm inflations in $\dot{B}_{\infty}^{-1, \infty}$. Particularly the magnetic field can develop norm inflation in short time even when the velocity remains small and vice verse. Efforts are made to present a very expository development of the inginious construction of Bourgain and Pavlović for Navier-Stokes equation.
Using Littlewood-Paley theory, one formulates the determining wavenumbers for the Hall-MHD system, defined for each individual solution $(u,b)$. It is shown that the long time behaviour of strong solutions is almost finite dimensional as the wavenumbers are bounded in certain average senses.

The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating was first derived from the Boltzmann equation in the form of the diffusive scaling by Bardos-Levermore-Ukai-Yang (2008). The purpose of this paper is to justify such an incompressible hydrodynamic approximation to the Boltzmann equation in $L^2\cap L^\infty$ setting in a periodic box. Based on an odd-even expansion of the solution with respect to the microscopic velocity, the diffusive coefficients are determined by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating and the super Burnett functions. More impo…
In this paper, we consider suitable weak solutions of the four dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic equations. We give two different kind $\varepsilon$-regularity criteria. One only requires the smallness of scaling $L^{p,q}$ norm of $u$, another requires the smallness of scaling space time $L^2$ norm of $\nabla u$ and boundedness of scaling norm of $H$ or $\nabla H$. And as an application of the second kind criteria, we also prove that up to the boundary, the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the set of singular points is equal to zero.
We demonstrate that the three dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) system is ill-posed in the largest scaling invariant space $\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-1}$. The construction method of initial data used in this paper is different from the one in a previous work [DQS] of the author. Specifically, we construct initial data which has finite energy and is small enough in $H^s\cap \dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-1}$, with $s<1/2$, such that any Leray-Hopf type of weak solution to the MHD system starting from this initial data is discontinuous at time $t=0$ in the metric of $\dot{B}_{\in…
This paper is concerned with the rigorous analysis of the zero electron mass limit of the full Navier-Stokes-Poisson. This system has been introduced in the literature by Anile and Pennisi (see [5]) in order to describe a hydrodynamic model for charge-carrier transport in semiconductor devices. The purpose of this paper is to prove rigorously zero electron mass limit in the framework of general ill prepared initial data. In this situation the velocity field and the electronic fields develop fast oscillations in time. The main idea we will use in this paper is a combination of formal asymptotic…
We prove a global-in-time limit from the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system with Ohm's law. Besides the techniques developed for the classical solutions to the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations in the past years, such as the nonlinear energy method and micro-macro decomposition are employed, key roles are played by the decay properties of both the electric field and the wave equation with linear damping of the divergence free magnetic field. This is a companion paper of [N. Jiang and Y.-L. Luo, \emph{Ann. PDE} 8 (20…
We provide local formulas for the pressure of incompressible fluids. The pressure can be expressed in terms of its average and averages of squares of velocity increments in arbitrary small neighborhoods. As application, we give a brief proof of the fact that $C^α$ velocities have $C^{2α}$ (or Lipschitz) pressures. We also give some regularity criteria for 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
We present a geometric analysis of the incompressible averaged Euler equations for an ideal inviscid fluid. We show that solutions of these equations are geodesics on the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group of a new weak right invariant pseudo metric. We prove that for precompact open subsets of ${\mathbb R}^n$, this system of PDEs with Dirichlet boundary conditions are well-posed for initial data in the Hilbert space $H^s$, $s>n/2+1$. We then use a nonlinear Trotter product formula to prove that solutions of the averaged Euler equations are a regular limit of solutions to the averaged Navi…
In this article, we study bounded solutions of Euler-type equations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ which have no integrability at $|x| \rightarrow +\infty$. As has been previously noted, such solutions fail to achieve uniqueness in an initial value problem, even under strong smoothness conditions. This contrasts with well-posedness results that have been obtained by using the Leray projection operator in these equations. This apparent paradox is solved by noting that using the Leray projector requires an extra condition the solutions must fulfill at $|x| \rightarrow + \infty$. Our goal is to find one such …
We prove the existence of short time, low regularity solutions to the incompressible, isotropic Lagrangian Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in Sobolev spaces. In the special case of initial datum in the Sobolev space $H^{3/2,2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, we obtain a global solution, improving on previous results, which required data in $H^{3,2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$.
In this paper, we solve a long-standing open problem: nonlinear stability of current-vortex sheet in the ideal incompressible Magneto-Hydrodynamics under the linear stability condition. This result gives a first rigorous confirmation of the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field on Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.
We study the Boltzmann equation with external forces, not necessarily deriving from a potential, in the incompressible Navier-Stokes perturbative regime. On the torus, we establish local-in-time, for any time, Cauchy theories that are independent of the Knudsen number in Sobolev spaces. The existence is proved around a time-dependent Maxwellian that behaves like the global equilibrium both as time grows and as the Knudsen number decreases. We combine hypocoercive properties of linearized Boltzmann operators with linearization around a time-dependent Maxwellian that catches the fluctuations of …
We present a Lagrangian-Eulerian strategy for proving uniqueness and local existence of solutions in path spaces of limited smoothness for a class of incompressible hydrodynamic models including Oldroyd-B type complex fluid models and zero magnetic resistivity magneto-hydrodynamics equations.
We prove the existence of short time solutions to the incompressible, isotropic Lagrangian Averaged Navier-Stokes equation with low regularity initial data in Besov spaces $B^{r}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $r>n/2p$. When $p=2$ and $n\geq 3$, we obtain global solutions, provided the parameters $r,q$ and $n$ satisfy certain inequalities. This is an improvement over known analogous Sobolev space results, which required $n=3$.
We present two types of the hydrodynamic limit of the nonlinear Schrödinger-Chern-Simons (SCS) system. We consider two different scalings of the SCS system and show that each SCS system asymptotically converges towards the compressible and incompressible Euler system, coupled with the Chern-Simons equations and Poisson equation respectively, as the scaled Planck constant converges to 0. Our method is based on the modulated energy estimate. In the case of compressible limit, we observe that the classical theory of relative entropy method can be applied to show the hydrodynamic limit, with the a…
We are interested in the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation for a gas of fermions in the incompressible Euler regime. We use the relative entropy method as improved by Saint-Raymond. Our result is analogous to what is obtained in the classical case, but the treatment is slightly complicated by the cubic nonlinearity of the collision operator.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible hydrodynamic flow of liquid crystals with periodic boundary conditions in R^N(N = 2, 3). It is rigorously shown that the local (and global) strong solution of the compressible system converges to the local (and global) strong solution of the incompressible system. Furthermore, the convergence rates are also obtained in some sense.
We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for…

In this thesis we prove that the homogeneous incompressible Euler equation of hydrodynamics on the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^n)$, $n \geq 2$ and $s > n/2+1$, can be expressed as a geodesic equation on an infinite dimensional manifold. As an application of this geometric formulation we prove that the solution map of the incompressible Euler equation, associating intial data in $H^s(\R^n)$ to the corresponding solution at time $t > 0$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous and nowhere differentiable.
We study the multiphasic formulation of the incompressible Euler equation introduced by Brenier: infinitely many phases evolve according to the compressible Euler equation and are coupled through a global in-compressibility constraint. We are able to prove that the entropy, when averaged over all phases, is a convex function of time, a result that was conjectured by Brenier. The novelty in our approach consists in introducing a time-discretization that allows us to import a flow interchange inequality previously used by Matthes, McCann and Savar{é} to study first order in time PDE, namely the …
The dynamics of a membrane is a coupled system comprising a moving elastic surface and an incompressible membrane fluid. We will consider a reduced elastic surface model, which involves the evolution equations of the moving surface, the dynamic equations of the two-dimensional fluid, and the incompressible equation, all of which operate within a curved geometry. In this paper, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the reduced elastic surface model by reformulating the model into a new system in the isothermal coordinates. One major difficulty is that of constructing an…
To date it has not been possible to prove whether or not the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations develop singular behaviour in finite time. Some possible singular scenarios, as for instance shock-waves, are very important from a physical point of view, since they imply the connection among the macroscopic and the microscopic scale. Therefore, the appearence of this type of singularity or a similar one might be interpreted as a possible explanation of the transition to turbulence. In order to clarify the question, some one-dimensional models for ideal incompressible hydrodynamics h…
It is challenging to perform a multiscale analysis of mesoscopic systems exhibiting singularities at the macroscopic scale. In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations $$\mathrm{St} \partial_t F + v\cdot \nabla_x F = \frac{1}{\mathrm{Kn}} Q(F ,F ) $$ toward the singular solutions of 2D incompressible Euler equations whose vorticity is unbounded $$\partial_t u + u \cdot \nabla_x u + \nabla_x p = 0,\text{div }u =0.$$ We obtain a microscopic description of the singularity through the so-called kinetic vorticity and understand its behavior in the vicinity of the macro…
We consider the three-dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic system with fractional powers of the Laplacian. We discover a wide range of spaces where the norm inflation occurs and hence small initial data results are out of reach. The norm inflation occurs not only in scaling invariant (critical) spaces, but also in supercritical, and, surprisingly, subcritical ones.
The hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations is considered for weak solutions. Using relative entropy estimate about an absolute Maxwellian, an incompressible Electron-Magnetohydrodynamics-Fourier limit for solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Blotzmann equations over any periodic spatial domain in $\R^3$ is studied. It is shown that any properly scaled sequence of renormalized solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations has fluctuations that (in the weak $L^1$ topology) converge to an infinitesimal Maxwellian with fluid variables that satisfy the incompressibility and B…
We study the equations of a two dimensional incompressible Newtonian fluid coupled with a dispersive parabolic-elliptic system on bounded domains. Global in time weak solutions are shown to exist and converge with a rate to the stationary solution for L^2 initial data. This paper extends and improves on a body of work surrounding the Debye-Huckel system to the hydrodyanamical case.
By direct numerical simulation to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with small-scale forcing and large-scale damping, Xiao-Wan-Chen-Eyink (2009) found an evidence that inverse energy cascade may proceed with the vortex thinning mechanism. On the other hand, Alexakis-Doering (2006) calculated upper bound of the bulk averaged enstrophy dissipation rate of the steady-state two dimensional turbulence. {In this paper, we show that vortex thinning induces enhanced dissipation with strictly slower vanishing order of the enstrophy dissipation than $Re^{-1}$.}
We are concerned with large-time behaviors of solutions for Vlasov--Navier--Stokes equations in two dimensions and Vlasov-Stokes system in three dimensions including the effect of velocity alignment/misalignment. We first revisit the large-time behavior estimate for our main system and refine assumptions on the dimensions and a communication weight function. In particular, this allows us to take into account the effect of the misalignment interactions between particles. We then use a sharp heat kernel estimate to obtain the exponential time decay of fluid velocity to its average in $L^\infty$-…
We consider the hydrodynamic limit of a stationary Boltzmann equation in a unit plate with in-flow boundary. We prove the solution can be approximated in $L^{\infty}$ by the sum of interior solution which satisfies steady incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, and boundary layer with geometric correction. Also, we construct a counterexample to the classical theory which states the behavior of solution near boundary can be described by the Knudsen layer derived from the Milne problem.
We study the interaction between the stability, and the propagation of regularity, for solutions to the incompressible 3D Euler equation. It is still unknown whether a solution with smooth initial data can develop a singularity in finite time. This article explains why the prediction of such a blow-up, via direct numerical experiments, is so difficult. It is described how, in such a scenario, the solution becomes unstable as time approaches the blow-up time.

We consider the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with non stationary source terms f chosen in a suitable space. We prove the existence of Leray-Hopf weak solutions and that it is possible to characterize (up to sub-sequences) their long-time averages, which satisfy the Reynolds averaged equations, involving a Reynolds stress. Moreover, we show that the turbulent dissipation is bounded by the sum of the Reynolds stress work and of the external turbulent fluxes, without any additional assumption, than that of dealing with Leray-Hopf weak solutions. Finally, in the last se…
In this paper, we investigate the solvability, regularity and the vanishing dissipation limit of solutions to the three-dimensional viscous magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations in bounded domains. On the boundary, the velocity field fulfills a Navier-slip condition, while the magnetic field satisfies the insulating condition. It is shown that the initial-boundary problem has a global weak solution for a general smooth domain. More importantly, for a flat domain, we establish the uniform local well-posedness of the strong solution with higher order uniform regularity and the asymptotic converge…
T. Tao constructed an averaged Navier-Stokes equations which obey an energy identity. Nevertheless, he proved that smooth solutions can blow up in finite time. This demonstrates that any proposed positive solution to the famous regularity problem for the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations which does not use the finer structure of the nonlinearity cannot possibly be successful. In this paper, we propose a very simple model of the Navier Stokes equation which also obey the energy identity and establish a similar result of finite-time blow up . The drawback of our result is …
We study dynamics of vortices in solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation $i \partial_t u = Δu + \varepsilon^{-2} u (1 - |u|^2)$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with nonzero degree at infinity. We prove that vortices move according to the classical Kirchhoff-Onsager ODE for a small but finite coupling parameter $\varepsilon$. By carefully tracking errors we allow for asymptotically large numbers of vortices, and this lets us connect the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the plane to two dimensional incompressible Euler equations through the work of Schochet [21].
We derive the incompressible Euler equations with heat convection with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse boundary in the hydrodynamic limit for the scale of large Reynold number. Inspired by the recent framework in [30], we consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with no-slip boundary conditions as an intermediary approximation and develop a Hilbert-type expansion of the Boltzmann equation around the global Maxwellian that allows the nontrivial heat transfer by convection in the limit. To justify our expansion and the limit, a new direct estim…
We consider the two-dimensional, $β$-plane, vorticity equations for an incompressible flow, where the zonally averaged flow varies on scales much larger than the perturbation. We prove global existence and uniqueness of the solution to the equations on periodic settings.
In this paper, we investigate the well-posedness theory for the MHD boundary layer system in two-dimensional space. The boundary layer equations are governed by the Prandtl type equations that are derived from the full incompressible MHD system with non-slip boundary condition on the velocity, perfectly conducting condition on the magnetic field, and Dirichlet boundary condition on the temperature when the viscosity coefficient depends on the temperature. To derive the Prandtl type boundary layer system, we require all the hydrodynamic Reynolds numbers, magnetic Reynolds numbers and Nusselt nu…
In this paper, we investigate some sufficient conditions for the breakdown of local smooth solutions to the three dimensional nonlinear nonlocal dissipative system modeling electro-hydrodynamics. This model is a strongly coupled system by the well-known incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the classical Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations. We show that the maximum of the vorticity field alone controls the breakdown of smooth solutions, which reveals that the velocity field plays a more dominant role than the density functions of charged particles in the blow-up theory of the system. Moreover…
In this paper, we study a hydrodynamic system modeling the deformation of vesicle membranes in incompressible viscous fluids. The system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a fourth order phase-field equation. In the three dimensional case, we prove the existence/uniqueness of local strong solutions for arbitrary initial data as well as global strong solutions under the large viscosity assumption. We also establish some regularity criteria in terms of the velocity for local smooth solutions. Finally, we investigate the stability of the system near local minimizers of the elast…
We introduce a special stochastic perturbation of the flow of diffuse matter as a curve in the group of diffeomorphisms of flat n-dimensional torus such that the perturbed system yields a solution of Burgers equation in the tangent space at unit of the diffeomorphism group. The same perturbation of the flow of perfect incompressible fluid yields a solution of Reynolds type equation but under some special external force on the diffeomorphism group it transforms into a solution of Navier-Stokes equation without external force.
