In this paper, we investigate the solvability, regularity and the vanishing dissipation limit of solutions to the three-dimensional viscous magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations in bounded domains. On the boundary, the velocity field fulfills a Navier-slip condition, while the magnetic field satisfies the insulating condition. It is shown that the initial-boundary problem has a global weak solution for a general smooth domain. More importantly, for a flat domain, we establish the uniform local well-posedness of the strong solution with higher order uniform regularity and the asymptotic convergence with a rate to the solution of the ideal MHD as the dissipation tends to zero.
In this paper, we prove that as the viscosity and resistivity go to zero, the solution of the Cauchy problem for the incompressible MHD equations converges to the solution of the ideal MHD equations in the same topology with the initial data. Our proof mainly depends on the method introduced by the paper \cite{G.L.Y} and the constructions of the incompressible MHD equations.
In the present paper, we show the ill-posedness of the free boundary problem of the incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in two spatial dimensions for any positive vacuum permeability $μ_0$, in Sobolev spaces. The analysis is uniform for any $μ_0>0$.
Let $(u,b)$ be a smooth enough solution of 3-D incompressible MHD system. We prove that if $(u,b)$ blows up at a finite time $T^*$, then for any $p\in]4,\infty[$, there holds $\int_0^{T^*}\bigl(\|u^3(t')\|^p_{\dH^{\frac 12+\frac 2p}}+\|b(t')\|^p_{\dH^{\frac 12+\frac 2p}}\bigr)dt'=\infty$. We remark that all these quantities are in the critical regularity of the MHD system.
In this paper, we solve a long-standing open problem: nonlinear stability of current-vortex sheet in the ideal incompressible Magneto-Hydrodynamics under the linear stability condition. This result gives a first rigorous confirmation of the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field on Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the multi-dimensional incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with inhomogeneous density and fractional dissipation. It is shown that when $α+β=1+\frac{n}{2}$ satisfying $1\leq β\leq α\leq\min \{\frac{3β}{2},\frac{n}{2},1+\frac{n}{4}\}$ and $\frac{n}{4}<α$ for $n\geq3$ , then the inhomogeneous incompressible MHD equations has a unique global strong solution for the initial data in Sobolev space which do not need a small condition.
This paper focuses on the 3D incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with mixed partial dissipation and magnetic diffusion. Our main result assesses the global stability of perturbations near the steady solution given by a background magnetic field. The stability problem on the MHD equations with partial or no dissipation has attracted considerable interests recently and there are substantial developments. The new stability result presented here is among the very few stability conclusions currently available for ideal or partially dissipated MHD equations. As a special consequence o…
In this paper, we prove the a priori estimates in Sobolev spaces for the free-boundary compressible inviscid magnetohydrodynamics equations with magnetic diffusion under the Rayleigh-Taylor physical sign condition. Our energy estimates are uniform in the sound speed. As a result, we can prove the convergence of solutions of the free-boundary compressible resistive MHD equations to the solution of the free-boundary incompressible resistive MHD equations, i.e., the incompressible limit. The key observation is that the magnetic diffusion together with elliptic estimates directly controls the Lore…
In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of plasma-vacuum interface problem for ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics under the stability condition: the magnetic field $\mathbf{h}$ and the vacuum magnetic field $\hat{\mathbf{h}}$ are non-collinear on the interface(i.e., $|\mathbf{h}\times \hat{\mathbf{h}}|>0$), which was introduced by Trakhinin as a stability condition for the compressible plasma-vacuum interface problem.
In this paper, we study the two phase flow problem with surface tension in the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. We first prove the local well-posedness of the two phase flow problem with surface tension, then demonstrate that as surface tension tends to zero, the solution of the two phase flow problem with surface tension converges to the solution of the two phase flow problem without surface tension.
In this paper, we study the well-posedness of boundary layer problems for the inhomogeneous incompressible magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) equations, which are derived from the two dimensional density-dependent incompressible MHD equations.Under the assumption that initial tangential magnetic field is not zero and density is a small perturbation of the outer constant flow in supernorm, the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of inhomogeneous incompressible MHD boundary layer equation are established in weighted Conormal Sobolev spaces by energy method. As a byproduct, the local-in-time well-posedn…
The global regularity for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations (MHD) in three dimensions is a long standing open problem of fluid dynamics and PDE theory. The Navier-Stokes equations can be viewed as a special case of MHD with a constant magnetic field, whose global regularity problem is known as a Clay Millennium Prize Problem. In this article, we prove the global regularity of axially symmetric solutions to the ideal MHD in three dimensions for a family of non-trivial magnetic fields. The proofs are based on the special structures of MHD and can of course also applied to the resi…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem of the nonhomogeneous incompressible non-resistive MHD on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with vacuum as far field density and prove that the 2D Cauchy problem has a unique local strong solution provided that the initial density and magnetic field decay not too slow at infinity. Furthermore, if the initial data satisfy some additional regularity and compatibility conditions, the strong solution becomes a classical one.
This paper is concerned with the Liouville type theorems for the 3D stationary incompressible Hall-MHD equations. We establish that under some sufficient conditions in local Morrey spaces, solutions of the stationary Hall-MHD equations are identically zero. In particular, we also prove Liouville type results for the stationary incompressible MHD equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$. Our theorems extend and generalize the classical results for the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
We obtain the global well-posedness to the 3D incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in Besov space with negative index of regularity. Particularly, we can get the global solutions for a new class of large initial data. As a byproduct, this result improves the corresponding result in \cite{HHW}. In addition, we also get the global result for this system in $\mathcalχ^{-1}(\R^3)$ originally developed in \cite{LL}. More precisely, we only assume that the norm of initial data is exactly smaller than the sum of viscosity and diffusivity parameters.
The present paper is dedicated to the global well-posedness for the 3D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in critical Besov spaces without smallness assumption on the variation of the density. We aim at extending the work by Abidi, Gui and Zhang (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 204 (1):189--230, 2012, and J. Math. Pures Appl. 100 (1):166--203, 2013) to a more lower regularity index about the initial velocity. The key to that improvement is a new a priori estimate for an elliptic equation with nonconstant coefficients in Besov spaces which have the same degree as $L^2$ in $\mathbb{…
In this paper, we investigate the well-posedness theory for the MHD boundary layer system in two-dimensional space. The boundary layer equations are governed by the Prandtl type equations that are derived from the full incompressible MHD system with non-slip boundary condition on the velocity, perfectly conducting condition on the magnetic field, and Dirichlet boundary condition on the temperature when the viscosity coefficient depends on the temperature. To derive the Prandtl type boundary layer system, we require all the hydrodynamic Reynolds numbers, magnetic Reynolds numbers and Nusselt nu…
For the free boundary problem of the plasma-vacuum interface to ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in two-dimensional space, the a priori estimates of solutions are proved in Sobolev norms by adopting a geometrical point of view. In the vacuum region, the magnetic field is described by the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, while at the interface the total pressure is continuous and the magnetic field is tangent to the boundary. We prove that the $L^2$ norms of any order covariant derivatives of the magnetic field in vacuum and on the boundaries are bounded in terms of initi…
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of global solutions to 3D anisotropic incompressible MHD systems. For the 3D MHD system with horizontal dissipation and full magnetic diffusion, it is shown that $\uh(t)$ decays at the rate of $O(t^{-(1-\f{1}{p})})$, $u_3(t)$ decays at the rate of $O(t^{-\f{3}{2}(1-\f{1}{p})})$ and $B(t)$ decays at the rate of $O(t^{-\f{3}{2}(1-\f{1}{p})-\f{1}{2}})$. Furthermore, we give the asymptotic expansion of solutions. We prove that the leading term of $\uh(t)$ is a combination of linear solution and two integrals from nonlinear coupling effects, while …
In this paper, similar to the incompressible Euler equation, we prove the propagation of the Gevrey regularity of solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. We also obtain an uniform estimate of Gevery radius for the solution of MHD equation.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of a singular perturbation problem for a $2$-D incompressible MHD system with density variations and Coriolis force, in the limit of small Rossby numbers. Two regimes are considered. The first one is the quasi-homogeneous regime, where the densities are small perturbations around a constant state. The limit dynamics is identified as an incompressible homogeneous MHD system, coupled with an additional transport equation for the limit of the density variations. The second case is the fully non-homogeneous regime, where the densities vary around a general non…
This paper concerns with the explicit blowup phenomenon for 3D incompressible MHD equations in R^3. More precisely, we find two family of explicit blowup solutions for 3D incompressible MHD equations in R^3. One family of solutions admit the smooth initial data, and the initial data of another family of solutions are not smooth. The energy of those solutions is infinite. Moreover, our results tell us that the blowup phenomenon of 3D incompressible MHD can only take place in the velocity field of the fluid, but no blowup for the magnetic field.
In this paper, we provide a much simplified proof of the main result in [Lin, Xu, Zhang, arXiv:1302.5877] concerning the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for a 2D incompressible viscous and non-resistive MHD system under the assumption that the initial data are close to some equilibrium states. Beside the classical energy method, the interpolating inequalities and the algebraic structure of the equations coming from the incompressibility of the fluid are crucial in our arguments. We combine the energy estimates with the $L^\infty$ estimates for time sli…
In this paper, we first prove the local well-posedness of strong solutions to the incompressible Hall-MHD system for initial data $(u_0,B_0)\in H^{\frac{1}{2}+σ}(\mathbb{R}^3)\times H^{\frac{3}{2}}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $σ\in (0,2)$. In particular, if the viscosity coefficient is equal to the resistivity coefficient, we can reduce $σ$ to $0$ with the aid of the new formulation of the Hall-MHD system observed by Danchin and Tan (Commun Partial Differ Equ 46(1):31-65, 2021). Compared with the previous works, our local well-posedness results improve the regularity condition on the initial data. Mor…
In this paper, we consider a layer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic filed in a horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary bounded by a free boundary and below bounded by a flat rigid interface. We prove the global well-posedness of the problem for both the case with and without surface tension. Moreover, we show that the global solution decays to the equilibrium exponentially in the case with surface tension, however the global solution decays to the equilibrium at an almost exponential rate in the case without surface tension.
Whether or not classical solutions of the 2D incompressible MHD equations without full dissipation and magnetic diffusion can develop finite-time singularities is a difficult issue. A major result of this paper establishes the global regularity of classical solutions for the MHD equations with mixed partial dissipation and magnetic diffusion. In addition, the global existence, conditional regularity and uniqueness of a weak solution is obtained for the 2D MHD equations with only magnetic diffusion.
We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in $\R^3$ for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system. We also prove that the solution to the incompressible MHD system can be obtained as the incompressible limit of the corresponding compressible system. We apply methods in extracting weak dissipative structure which were suggested by Lei-Liu-Zhou.
In this paper, we address the space-time decay properties for strong solutions to the incompressible viscous resistive Hall-MHD equations. We obtained the same space-time decay rates as those of the heat equation. Based on the temporal decay results in \cite{cs}, we find that one can obtain weighted estimates of the magnetic field $B$ by direct weighted energy estimate, and then by regarding the magnetic convection term as a forcing term in the velocity equations, we can obtain the weighted estimates for the vorticity, which yields the corresponding estimates for the velocity field. The higher…
We consider the dynamics of a layer of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic field in a two-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary is in contact with the atmosphere, and the lower boundary is a rigid flat bottom. We prove the global well-posedness of the inviscid and resistive problem with surface tension around a non-horizontal uniform magnetic field; moreover, the solution decays to the equilibrium almost exponentially. One of the key observations here is an induced damping structure for the fluid vorticity due to the resistivity…
In this paper, we we study boundary layer problems for the incompressible MHD systems in the presence of physical boundaries with the standard Dirichlet oundary conditions with small generic viscosity and diffusion coefficients. We identify a non-trivial class of initial data for which we can establish the uniform stability of the Prandtl's type boundary layers and prove rigorously that the solutions to the viscous and diffusive incompressible MHD systems converges strongly to the superposition of the solution to the ideal MHD systems with a Prandtl's type boundary layer corrector. One of the …
In this paper we show that the incompressible Hall-MHD system without resistivity is not globally in time well-posed in any Sobolev space $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for any $m>\frac{7}{2}$. Namely, either the system is locally ill-posed in $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, or it is locally well-posed, but there exists an initial data in $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, for which the $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ norm of solution blows-up in finite time if $m>7/2$. In the latter case we choose an axisymmetric initial data $u_0(x)=u_{0r}(r,z)e_r+ b_{0z}(r,z)e_z$ and $B_0(x)=b_{0θ}(r,z)e_θ$, and reduce the system to the axisymmet…
The small data global well-posedness of the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^3$ with only one-directional dissipation remains an outstanding open problem. The dissipation in just one direction, say $\partial_1^2 u$ is simply insufficient in controlling the nonlinearity in the whole space $\mathbb R^3$. The beautiful work of Paicu and Zhang \cite{ZHANG1} solved the case when the spatial domain is bounded in the $x_1$-direction by observing a crucial Poincaré type inequality. Motivated by this Navier-Stokes open problem and by experimental observations on the stabilizing e…
We consider the three-dimensional incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in a bounded domain with small volume and free moving surface boundary. We establish a priori estimate for solutions with minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data in Lagrangian coordinates. In particular, due to the lack of the Cauchy invariance for MHD equations, the smallness assumption on the fluid domain is required to compensate a loss of control of the flow map. Moreover, we show that the magnetic field has certain regularizing effect which allows us to control the vorticity of the fluid and t…
This paper is concerned with a Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3D) nonhomogeneous incompressible heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the whole space. First of all, we establish a weak Serrin-type blowup criterion for the strong solutions. It is shown that for the Cauchy problem of the 3D nonhomogeneous heat conducting MHD equations, the strong solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the weak Serrin's condition. In particular, this criterion is independent of the absolute temperature and magnetic field. Then as an immediate application, we prove the globa…
This paper establishes the global regularity of classical solution to the 2D MHD system with only horizontal dissipation and horizontal magnetic diffusion in a strip domain $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$ when the initial data is suitable small. To prove this, we combine the Littlewood-Paley decomposition with anisotropic inequalities to establish a crucial commutator estimate. We also analysis the asymptotic behavior of the solution. In addition, the global existence and uniqueness of classical solution is obtained for the 2D simplified tropical climate model with only horizontal dissipations.
In this paper, we are concerned with the two-dimensional (2D) incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with velocity dissipation given by $(-Δ)^α$ and magnetic diffusion given by reducing about logarithmic diffusion from standard Laplacian diffusion. More precisely, we establish the global regularity of solutions to the system as long as the power $α$ is a positive constant. In addition, we prove several global \emph{a priori} bounds for the case $α=0$. In particular, our results significantly improve previous works and take us one step closer to a complete resolution of the global r…

For the free boundary problem of the plasma-vacuum interface to three-dimensional ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), the a priori estimates of smooth solutions are proved in Sobolev norms by adopting a geometrical point of view and some quantities such as the second fundamental form and the velocity of the free interface are estimated. In the vacuum region, the magnetic fields are described by the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, while at the interface the total pressure is continuous and the magnetic fields are tangent to the interface, but we do not need any restriction…
This paper examines the global (in time) regularity of classical solutions to the 2D incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with only magnetic diffusion. Here the magnetic diffusion is given by the fractional Laplacian operator $(-Δ)^β$. We establish the global regularity for the case when $β>1$. This result significantly improves previous work which requires $β>\frac32$ and brings us closer to the resolution of the well-known global regularity problem on the 2D MHD equations with standard Laplacian magnetic diffusion, namely the case when $β=1$.
In this paper, we consider the global wellposedness of 3-D incompressible magneto-hydrodynamical system with small and smooth initial data. The main difficulty of the proof lies in establishing the global in time $L^1$ estimate for the velocity field due to the strong degeneracy and anisotropic spectral properties of the linearized system. To achieve this and to avoid the difficulty of propagating anisotropic regularity for the transport equation, we first write our system \eqref{B1} in the Lagrangian formulation \eqref{B11}. Then we employ anisotropic Littlewood-Paley analysis to establish th…
