Any real number $x$ in the unit interval can be expressed as a continued fraction $x=[n_1,...,n_{_N},...]$. Subsets of zero measure are obtained by imposing simple conditions on the $n_{_N}$. By imposing $n_{_N}\le m \forall N\in \zN$, Jarnik defined the corresponding sets $E_m$ and gave a first estimate of $d_H(E_m)$, $d_H$ the Hausdorff dimension. Subsequent authors improved these estimates. In this paper we deal with $d_H(E_m)$ and $d_H(F_m)$, $F_m$ being the set of real numbers for which ${\sum_{i=1}^N n_i\over N}\le m$.
Using the variational principle in parametric geometry of numbers, we compute the Hausdorff and packing dimension of Diophantine sets related to exponents of Diophantine approximation, and their intersections. In particular, we extend a result of Jarník and Besicovitch to intermediate exponents.
Following in the footsteps of P. Erdős and A. Rényi we compute the Hausdorff dimension of sets of numbers whose digits with respect to their $Q$-Cantor series expansions satisfy various statistical properties. In particular, we consider difference sets associated with various notions of normality and sets of numbers with a prescribed range of digits.
Expansions in non-integer bases have been investigated abundantly since their introduction by Rényi. It was discovered by Erdős et al. that the sets of numbers with a unique expansion have a much more complex structure than in the integer base case. The present paper is devoted to the continuity properties of these maps with respect to the Hausdorff metric.
We show that the set of numbers that are $Q$-distribution normal but not simply $Q$-ratio normal has full Hausdorff dimension. It is further shown under some conditions that countable intersections of sets of this form still have full Hausdorff dimension even though they are not winning sets (in the sense of W. Schmidt). As a consequence of this, we construct many explicit examples of numbers that are simultaneously distribution normal but not simply ratio normal with respect to certain countable families of basic sequences. Additionally, we prove that some related sets are either winning sets…
Let $\{s_n\}$ and $\{t_n\}$ be two sequences of positive real numbers. Under some mild conditions on $\{s_n\}$ and $\{t_n\}$, we give the precise formula of the Hausdorff dimension of the set \[ \mathbb{E}(\{s_n\},\{t_n\}):=\Big\{x\in(0,1): s_{n}<d_{n}(x)\leq s_n+t_n, \forall n\geq1\Big\}, \] where $d_n(x)$ denotes the digit of the Engel expansion of $x$. This result improves the Lemma 2.6 of Shang and Wu (2021JNT), and is very useful for calculating the Hausdorff dimension of certain sets in Engel expansions.
Let $ψ:\mathbb R_{+}\to \mathbb R_{+}$ be a nonincreasing function. A pair $(A,\mathbf b),$ where $A$ is a real $m\times n$ matrix and $\mathbf b\in\mathbb R^{m},$ is said to be $ψ$-Dirichlet improvable, if the system $$\|A\mathbf q +\mathbf b-\mathbf p\|^m<ψ(T), \quad \|\mathbf q\|^n<T$$ is solvable in $\mathbf p\in\mathbb Z^{m},$ $\mathbf q\in\mathbb Z^{n}$ for all sufficiently large $T$ where $\|\cdot\|$ denotes the supremum norm. For $ψ$-Dirichlet non-improvable sets, Kleinbock--Wadleigh (2019) proved the Lebesgue measure criterion whereas Kim--Kim (2021) established the Hausdorff measure …
In this paper, we will introduce and study the lower moving digit mean $\underline{M}(x)$ and the upper moving digit mean $\overline{M}(x)$ of $x\in[0,1]$ in $p$-adic expansion, where $p\geq2$ is an integer. Moreover, the Hausdorff dimension of level set \[B(α,β)=\left\{x\in [0,1]\colon \underline{M}(x)=α,\overline{M}(x)=β\right\}\] is determined for each pair of numbers $α$ and $β$ satisfying with $0\leqα\leqβ\leq p-1$.
Let Q be an infinite set of positive integers. Denote by W_{τ, n}(Q) (resp. W_{τ, n}) the set of points in dimension n simultaneously τ--approximable by infinitely many rationals with denominators in Q (resp. in N*). A non--trivial lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the liminf set W_{τ, n}\W_{τ, n}(Q) is established when n>1 and τ>1+1/(n-1) in the case where the set Q satisfies some divisibility properties. The computation of the actual value of this Hausdorff dimension as well as the one--dimensional analogue of the problem are also discussed.
In this article, we study the Hausdorff measure of shrinking target sets on self-conformal sets. The Hausdorff dimension of the sets we are interested in here was established by Hill and Velani in 1995. However, until recently, little more was known about the Hausdorff measure of these particular sets. In this paper we provide a complete characterisation of the Hausdorff measure of these sets, obtaining a dichotomy for the Hausdorff measure which is determined by the convergence or divergence of a sum depending on the radii of our "shrinking targets". Our main result complements earlier work o…

We provide new similarities between regular continued fractions and Lüroth series in terms of topological dynamics and Hausdorff dimension. In particular, we establish a complete analogue for the Lüroth transformation of results by W. Liu, B. Li and W. Liu, S. Wang on the distal, asymptotic and Li-Yorke pairs for the Gauss map.
By applying a 2014 result on the distribution of full cylinders, we give a proof of the useful folklore: for any $β>1$, the Hausdorff dimension of an arbitrary set in the shift space $S_β$ is equal to the Hausdorff dimension of its natural projection in $[0,1]$. It has been used in some former papers without proof. Then we clarify that for calculating the Hausdorff dimension of frequency sets using variational formulae, one only needs to focus on the Markov measures of explicit order when the $β$-expansion of $1$ is finite. Concretely, it suffices to optimize a function with finitely many vari…
We study natural measures on sets of beta-expansions and on slices through self similar sets. In the setting of beta-expansions, these allow us to better understand the measure of maximal entropy for the random beta-transformation and to reinterpret a result of Lindenstrauss, Peres and Schlag in terms of equidistribution. Each of these applications is relevant to the study of Bernoulli convolutions. In the fractal setting this allows us to understand how to disintegrate Hausdorff measure by slicing, leading to conditions under which almost every slice through a self similar set has positive Ha…
This paper is dedicated to the study of two famous subsets of the real line, namely Lagrange spectrum $L$ and Markov spectrum $M$. Our first result, Theorem 2.1, provides a rigorous estimate on the smallest value $t_1$ such that the portion of the Markov spectrum $(-\infty,t_1)\cap M$ has Hausdorff dimension $1$. Our second result, Theorem 3.1, gives a new upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of the set difference $M\setminus L$. Our method combines new facts about the structure of the classical spectra together with finer estimates on the Hausdorff dimension of Gauss--Cantor sets of continu…

Dobiński set $\mathcal{D}$ is an exceptional set for a certain infinite product identity, whose points are characterized as having exceedingly good approximations by dyadic rationals. We study the Hausdorff dimension and logarithmic measure of $\mathcal{D}$ by means of the Mass Transference Principle and by the construction of certain appropriate Cantor-like sets, termed willow sets, contained in $\mathcal{D}$.
The authors have recently obtained a lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the sets of vectors $(x_1, \ldots, x_d)\in [0,1)^d$ with large Weyl sums, namely of vectors for which $$ \left| \sum_{n=1}^{N}\exp(2πi (x_1 n+\ldots +x_d n^{d})) \right| \ge N^α $$ for infinitely many integers $N \ge 1$. Here we obtain an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of these exceptional sets.
I. J. Good (1941) showed that the set of irrational numbers in $(0,1)$ whose partial quotients $a_n$ tend to infinity is of Hausdorff dimension $1/2$. A number of related results impose restrictions of the type $a_n\in B$ or $a_n\geq f(n)$, where $B$ is an infinite subset of $\mathbb N$ and $f$ is a rapidly growing function with $n$. We show that, for an arbitrary $B$ and an arbitrary $f$ with values in $[\min B,\infty)$ and tending to infinity, the set of irrational numbers in $(0,1)$ such that \[ a_n\in B,\ a_n\leq f(n)\text{ for all $n\in\mathbb N$, and }a_n\to\infty\text{ as }n\to\infty\] …
We prove that the algorithm of [13] for approximating the Hausdorff dimension of dynamically defined Cantor sets, using periodic points of the underlying dynamical system, can be used to establish completely rigorous high accuracy bounds on the dimension. The effectiveness of these rigorous estimates is illustrated for Cantor sets consisting of continued fraction expansions with restricted digits. For example the Hausdorff dimension of the set $E_2$ (of those reals whose continued fraction expansion only contains digits 1 and 2) can be rigorously approximated, with an accuracy of over 100 deci…
We consider Farey series of rational numbers in terms of {\it fractal sets} labeled by the Hausdorff dimension with values defined in the interval 1$ $$ < $$ $$h$$ $$ <$$ $$ 2$ and associated with fractal curves. Our results come from the observation that the fractional quantum Hall effect-FQHE occurs in pairs of {\it dual topological quantum numbers}, the filling factors. These quantum numbers obey some properties of the Farey series and so we obtain that {\it the universality classes of the quantum Hall transitions are classified in terms of $h$}. The connection between Number Theory and Phy…
