Let G be a Lie groupoid and L his Lie algebroid. We give a definition of the classical limit of a C^*-bundle and we use the tangent groupoid associated to G to show that the Poisson structure on L is the classical limit of a C^*-bundle.
For a Lie groupoid G over a smooth manifold M we construct the adjoint action of the etale Lie groupoid G# of germs of local bisections of G on the Lie algebroid g of G. With this action, we form the associated convolution C_c(M)/R-bialgebra C_c(G#,g). We represent this C_c(M)/R-bialgebra in the algebra of transversal distributions on G. This construction extends the Cartier-Gabriel decomposition of the Hopf algebra of distributions with finite support on a Lie group.
Any etale Lie groupoid G is completely determined by its associated convolution algebra C_c(G) equipped with the natural Hopf algebroid structure. We extend this result to the generalized morphisms between etale Lie groupoids: we show that any principal H-bundle P over G is uniquely determined by the associated C_c(G)-C_c(H)-bimodule C_c(P) equipped with the natural coalgebra structure. Furthermore, we prove that the functor C_c gives an equivalence between the Morita category of etale Lie groupoids and the Morita category of locally grouplike Hopf algebroids.
Alain Connes introduced the use of Lie groupoids in noncommutative geometry in his pioneering work on the index theory of foliations. In the present paper, we recall the basic notion involved: groupoids, their C*-algebras, their pseudodifferential calculus... We review several recent and older advances on the involvement of Lie groupoids in noncommutative geometry. We then propose some open questions and possible developments of the subject.
In this paper we generalize a theorem of M. Hilsum and G. Skandalis stating that the $C^*$- algebra of any foliation of non zero dimension is stable. Precisely, we show that the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid is stable whenever the groupoid has no orbit of dimension zero. We also prove an analogous theorem for singular foliations for which the holonomy groupoid as defined by I. Androulidakis and G. Skandalis is not Lie in general.
We describe how Lie groupoids are used in singular analysis, index theory and non-commutative geometry and give a brief overview of the theory. We also expose groupoid proofs of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and discuss the Baum-Connes conjecture for Lie groupoids. With the help of the general framework of Lie groupoids and related structures we survey recent progress on problems which were outside the scope of the original work of Atiyah and Singer. This includes the Atiyah-Singer type index problem for many classes of non-compact manifolds (e.g. manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity).…
Using the calculus of Fourier integral operators on Lie groupoids developped in [18], we study the fundamental solution of the evolution equation ($\partial$ $\partial$t + iP)u = 0 where P is a self adjoint elliptic order one G-pseudodifferential operator on the Lie groupoid G. Along the way, we continue the study of distributions on Lie groupoids done in [17] by adding the reduced C *-algebra of G in the picture and we investigate the local nature of the regularizing operators of [32].
In this paper, we introduce quotients of étale groupoids. Using the notion of quotients, we describe the abelianizations of groupoid C*-algebras. As another application, we obtain a simple proof that effectiveness of an étale groupoid is implied by the full uniqueness property of its groupoid C*-algebra.
We show that every groupoid C*-algebra is isomorphic to its opposite, and deduce that there exist C*-algebras that are not stably isomorphic to groupoid C*-algebras, though many of them are stably isomorphic to twisted groupoid C*-algebras. We also prove that the opposite algebra of a section algebra of a Fell-bundle over a groupoid is isomorphic to the section algebra of a natural opposite bundle.
In this paper we study the Lie groupoids which appear in foliation theory. A foliation groupoid is a Lie groupoid which integrates a foliation, or, equivalently, whose anchor map is injective. The first theorem shows that, for a Lie groupoid G, the following are equivalent: - G is a foliation groupoid, - G has discrete isotropy groups, - G is Morita equivalent to an etale groupoid. Moreover, we show that among the Lie groupoids integrating a given foliation, the holonomy and the monodromy groupoids are extreme examples. The second theorem shows that the cyclic homology of convolution algebras …
In this master's thesis, we will go into the (projective) blow-up construction for Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. In the literature, there are different methods to be found on how to do this, especially for Lie groupoids. The main goal of the thesis is to explain, in detail, the Lie groupoid and the Lie algebroid blow-up constructions, but also to examine and compare different points of view. More explicitly, we will rigorously explain the blow-up construction for Lie groupoids by Claire Debord and Georges Skandalis. Moreover, we will show that the blow-up construction for Lie groupoids by …
From a suitable groupoid G, we show how to construct an amenable principal groupoid whose C*-algebra is a Kirchberg algebra which is KK-equivalent to C*(G). Using this construction, we show by example that many UCT Kirchberg algebras can be realised as the C*-algebras of amenable principal groupoids.
A theorem of Muhly-Renault-Williams states that if two locally compact groupoids with Haar system are Morita equivalent, then their associated convolution C*-algebras are strongly Morita equivalent. We give a new proof of this theorem for Lie groupoids. Subsequently, we prove a counterpart of this theorem in Poisson geometry: If two Morita equivalent Lie groupoids are s-connected and s-simply connected, then their associated Poisson manifolds (viz. the dual bundles to their Lie algebroids) are Morita equivalent in the sense of P. Xu.
A famous theorem of Dixmier-Malliavin asserts that every smooth, compactly-supported function on a Lie group can be expressed as a finite sum in which each term is the convolution, with respect to Haar measure, of two such functions. We establish that the same holds for a Lie groupoid. Most of the heavy lifting is done by a lemma in the original work of Dixmier-Malliavin. We also need the technology of Lie algebroids and the corresponding notion of exponential map. As an application, we obtain a result on the arithmetic of ideals in the smooth convolution algebra of a Lie groupoid arising from…
Many index theorems (both classical and in noncommutative geometry) can be interpreted in terms of a Lie groupoid acting properly on a manifold and leaving an elliptic family of pseudodifferential operators invariant. Alain Connes in his book raised the question of an index theorem in this general context. In this paper, an analytic index for many such situations is constructed. The approach is inspired by the classical families theorem of Atiyah and Singer, and the proof generalizes, to the case of proper Lie groupoid actions, some of the results proved for proper locally compact group action…

We construct an algebra of pseudodifferential operators on each groupoid in a class that generalizes differentiable groupoids to allow manifolds with corners. We show that this construction encompasses many examples. The subalgebra of regularizing operators is identified with the smooth algebra of the groupoid, in the sense of non-commutative geometry. Symbol calculus for our algebra lies in the Poisson algebra of functions on the dual of the Lie algebroid of the groupoid. As applications, we give a new proof of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for Lie algebroids and a concrete quantization …
We present natural and general ways of building Lie groupoids, by using the classical procedures of blowups and of deformations to the normal cone. Our constructions are seen to recover many known ones involved in index theory. The deformation and blowup groupoids obtained give rise to several extensions of $C^*$-algebras and to full index problems. We compute the corresponding K-theory maps. Finally, the blowup of a manifold sitting in a transverse way in the space of objects of a Lie groupoid leads to a calculus, quite similar to the Boutet de Monvel calculus for manifolds with boundary.
In this paper we define K-theoretic secondary invariants attached to a Lie groupoid $G$. The K-theory of $C^*_r(G_{ad}^0)$ (where $G_{ad}^0$ is the adiabatic deformation $G$ restricted to the interval $[0,1)$) is the receptacle for K-theoretic secondary invariants. We give a Lie groupoid version of construction given by Piazza and Schick in the setting of the Coarse Geometry. Our construction directly generalises to more involved geometrical situation, such as foliations, well encoded by a Lie groupoid. Along the way we tackle the problem of producing a wrong-way functoriality between adiabati…
In this work we realize Leavitt path algebras as partial skew groupoid rings. This yields a free path groupoid grading on Leavitt path algebras. Using this grading we characterize free path groupoid graded isomorphisms of Leavitt path algebras that preserves generators.
We give a concise introduction to (discrete) algebras arising from étale groupoids, (aka Steinberg algebras) and describe their close relationship with groupoid C*-algebras. Their connection to partial group rings via inverse semigroups also explored.
For any Lie groupoid $G$, the vector bundle $g^*$ dual to the associated Lie algebroid $g$ is canonically a Poisson manifold. The (reduced) C*-algebra of $G$ (as defined by A. Connes) is shown to be a strict quantization (in the sense of M. Rieffel) of $g^*$. This is proved using a generalization of Weyl's quantization prescription on flat space. Many other known strict quantizations are a special case of this procedure; on a Riemannian manifold, one recovers Connes' tangent groupoid as well as a recent generalization of Weyl's prescription. When $G$ is the gauge groupoid of a principal bundle…
