Let $M$ be a smooth manifold, $\cal S$ the space of polynomial on fibers functions on $T^*M$ (i.e., of symmetric contravariant tensor fields). We compute the first cohomology space of the Lie algebra, $Vect(M)$, of vector fields on $M$ with coefficients in the space of linear differential operators on $\cal S$. This cohomology space is closely related to the $Vect(M)$-modules, ${\cal D}_λ(M)$, of linear differential operators on the space of tensor densities on $M$ of degree $λ$.
In this short note we define a new cohomology for a Lie algebroid $\mathcal{A}$, that we call the \emph{twisted cohomology} of $\mathcal{A}$ by an odd cocycle $θ$ in the Lie algebroid cohomology of $\mathcal{A}$. We proof that this cohomology only depends on the Lie algebroid cohomology class $[θ]$ of the odd cocycle $θ$. We give a few examples showing that this new cohomology encompasses various well-known cohomology theories.
We define Lie and Courant algebroids on Fréchet manifolds. Moreover, we construct a Dirac structure on the generalized tangent bundle of a Fréchet manifold and show that it inherits a Fréchet Lie algebroid structure. We show that the Lie algebroid cohomology of the $\bb$-cotangent bundle Lie algebroid of a weakly symplectic Fréchet manifold $M$ is the Lichnerowicz-Poisson cohomology of $M$.
We give numerous examples of almost Lie algebroids arising as Dirac structures in pre-Courant algebroids, e.g. from twisted Poisson structures, as well as from twisted actions of a Lie algebra. We moreover define a cohomology for them, motivated by a Q-structure, that is trivial for (bundles of) Lie algebras but characterizes the underlying integrable distribution the image of the anchor map.
The space of differential operators acting on skewsymmetric tensor fields or on smooth forms of a smooth manifold are representations of its Lie algebra of vector fields. We compute the first cohomology spaces of these representations and show how they are related to the cohomology with coefficients in ther space of smooth functions of the manifold.
In this thesis, we introduce a new cohomology theory associated to a Lie 2-algebras and a new cohomology theory associated to a Lie 2-group. These cohomology theories are shown to extend the classical cohomology theories of Lie algebras and Lie groups in that their second groups classify extensions. We use this fact together with an adapted van Est map to prove the integrability of Lie 2-algebras anew.
We study representations of hemistrict Lie 2-algebras and give a functorial construction of their cohomology. We prove that both the cohomology of an injective hemistrict Lie 2-algebra $L$ and the cohomology of the semistrict Lie 2-algebra obtained from skew-symmetrization of $L$ are isomorphic to the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of the induced Lie algebra $L_{\operatorname{Lie}}$.
In this article, we introduce a new cohomology theory associated to a Lie 2-algebras. This cohomology theory is shown to extend the classical cohomology theory of Lie algebras; in particular, we show that the second cohomology group classifies an appropriate type of extensions.
We introduce a bicomplex which computes the triple cohomology of Lie--Rinehart algebras. We prove that the triple cohomology is isomorphic to the Rinehart cohomology \cite{Ri} provided the Lie--Rinehart algebra is projective over the corresponding commutative algebra. As an application we construct a canonical class in the third dimensional cohomology corresponding to an associative algebra.
We show that the theory of Lie algebra cohomology can be recast in a topological setting and that classical results, such as the Shapiro lemma and the van Est isomorphism, carry over to this augmented context.
We propose a unified framework in which the different constructions of cohomology groups for topological and Lie groups can all be treated on equal footings. In particular, we show that the cohomology of "locally continuous" cochains (respectively "locally smooth" in the case of Lie groups) fits into this framework, which provides an easily accessible cocycle model for topological and Lie group cohomology. We illustrate the use of this unified framework and the relation between the different models in various applications. This includes the construction of cohomology classes characterizing the…
The space of Lie algebra cohomology is usually described by the dimensions of components of certain degree even for the adjoint module as coefficients when the spaces of cochains and cohomology can be endowed with a Lie superalgebra structure. Such a description is rather imprecise: these dimensions may coincide for cohomology spaces of distinct algebras. We explicitely describe the Lie superalgebras on the space of cohomology of the maximal nilpotent subalgebra of any simple finite dimensional Lie algebra. We briefly review related results by Grozman, Penkov and Serganova, Poletaeva, and Tolp…
We study the tangential Poisson cohomology (TP-cohomology) of regular Poisson manifolds, first defined by Lichnerowicz using contravariant tensor fields. We show that for a regular Poisson manifold M, the TP-cohomology coincides with the leafwise de Rham (or Cech) cohomology of the symplectic foliation of M. Its computation in various degrees leads to open, non trivial problems. To get a better understanding of these difficulties, we study explicitly many examples coming from nilpotent and 3-dimensional (real) Lie algebras. For the latter, we compare the TP-cohomology and the usual Poisson coh…
On the basis of Brylinski's work, we introduce a notion of equivariant smooth Deligne cohomology group, which is a generalization of both the ordinary smooth Deligne cohomology and the ordinary equivariant cohomology. Using the cohomology group, we classify equivariant circle bundles with connection, and equivariant gerbes with connection.
Using the language and terminology of relative homological algebra, in particular that of derived functors, we introduce equivariant cohomology over a general Lie-Rinehart algebra and equivariant de Rham cohomology over a locally trivial Lie groupoid in terms of suitably defined monads (also known as triples) and the associated standard constructions. This extends a characterization of equivariant de Rham cohomology in terms of derived functors developed earlier for the special case where the Lie groupoid is an ordinary Lie group, viewed as a Lie groupoid with a single object; in that theory o…
Let $G$ be a complex Lie group acting on a compact complex Hermitian manifold $M$ by holomorphic isometries. We prove that the induced action on the Dolbeault cohomology and on the Bott-Chern cohomology is trivial. We also apply this result to compute the Dolbeault cohomology of Vaisman manifolds.
The main topic of this paper is two folds. First, we compute the first relative cohomology group of the Lie algebra of smooth vector fields on the projective line, Vect(RP^1), with coefficients in the space of bilinear differential operators that act on tensor densities, D_{λ, ν;μ}, vanishing on the Lie algebra sl(2,R). Second, we compute the first cohomology group of the Lie algebra sl(2,R) with coefficients in D_{λ, ν;μ}.
Let $A \Rightarrow M$ be a Lie algebroid. In this short note, we prove that a pull-back of $A$ along a fibration with homologically $k$-connected fibers, shares the same deformation cohomology of $A$ up to degree $k$.
We show that every Lie algebroid $A$ over a manifold $P$ has a natural representation on the line bundle $Q_A = \wedge^{top}A \otimes \wedge^{top} T^*P$. The line bundle $Q_A$ may be viewed as the Lie algebroid analog of the orientation bundle in topology, and sections of $Q_A$ may be viewed as transverse measures to $A$. As a consequence, there is a well-defined class in the first Lie algebroid cohomology $H^1(A)$ called the modular class of the Lie algebroid $A$. This is the same as the one introduced earlier by Weinstein using the Poisson structure on $A^*$. We show that there is a natural …
In this paper we study the cohomology of (strict) Lie 2-groups. We obtain an explicit Bott-Shulman type map in the case of a Lie 2-group corresponding to the crossed module $A\to 1$. The cohomology of the Lie 2-groups corresponding to the universal crossed modules $G\to \Aut(G)$ and $G\to \Aut^+(G)$ is the abutment of a spectral sequence involving the cohomology of $GL(n,\Z)$ and $SL(n,\Z)$. When the dimension of the center of $G$ is less than 3, we compute explicitly these cohomology groups. We also compute the cohomology of the Lie 2-group corresponding to a crossed module $G\to H$ whose ker…
We give a definition of differentiable cohomology of a Lie group G (possibly infinite-dimensional) with coefficients in any abelian Lie group. This differentiable cohomology maps both to the cohomology of the group made discrete and to Lie algebra cohomology. We show that the secondary characteristic classes of Beilinson lead to differentiable cohomology classes with coefficients in C*. These may be viewed as an enrichment of the Chern-Simons differential forms. By transgression, classes in differentiable cohomology of a Lie group G lead to differentiable cohomology classes for gauge groups Ma…
We obtain formulas for the first and second cohomology groups of a general current Lie algebra with coefficients in the "current" module, and apply them to compute structure functions for manifolds of loops with values in compact Hermitian symmetric spaces.
The van Est map is a map from Lie groupoid cohomology (with respect to a sheaf taking values in a representation) to Lie algebroid cohomology. We generalize the van Est map to allow for more general sheaves, namely to sheaves of sections taking values in a (smooth or holomorphic) $G$-module, where $G$-modules are structures which differentiate to representations. Many geometric structures involving Lie groupoids and stacks are classified by the cohomology of sheaves taking values in $G$-modules and not in representations, including $S^1$-groupoid extensions and equivariant gerbes. Examples of …
Inspired by the work of Chevalley and Eilenberg on the de Rham cohomology on compact Lie groups, we prove that, under certain algebraic and topological conditions, the cohomology associated to left-invariant elliptic, and even hypocomplex, involutive structures on compact Lie groups can be computed by using only Lie algebras, thus reducing the analytical problem to a purely algebraic one. The main tool is the Leray spectral sequence that connects the result obtained Chevalley and Eilenberg to a result by Bott on the Dolbeault cohomology of a homogeneous manifold.
Two examples of $\mathrm{Diff}^+S^1$-invariant closed two-forms obtained from forms on jet bundles, which does not admit equivariant moment maps are presented. The corresponding cohomological obstruction is computed and shown to coincide with a nontrivial Lie algebra cohomology class on $H^2(\mathfrak{X}(S^1))$.

Let M be a manifold carrying the action of a Lie group G, and A a Lie algebroid on M equipped with a compatible infinitesimal G-action. Out of these data we construct an equivariant Lie algebroid cohomology and prove for compact G a related localization formula. As an application we prove a Bott-type formula.
In this paper we analyse the topological group cohomology of finite-dimensional Lie groups. We introduce a technique for computing it (as abelian groups) for torus coefficients by the naturally associated long exact sequence. The upshot in there is that certain morphisms in this long exact coefficient sequence can be accessed (at least for semi-simple Lie groups) very conveniently by the Chern-Weil homomorphism of the naturally associated compact dual symmetric space. Since the latter is very well-known, this gives the possibility to compute the topological group cohomology of the classical si…
We consider spectral sequences in smooth generalized cohomology theories, including differential generalized cohomology theories. The main differential spectral sequences will be of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch (AHSS) type, where we provide a filtration by the Cech resolution of smooth manifolds. This allows for systematic study of torsion in differential cohomology. We apply this in detail to smooth Deligne cohomology, differential topological complex K-theory, and to a smooth extension of integral Morava K-theory that we introduce. In each case we explicitly identify the differentials in the corres…
