We study Lie algebras generated by extremal elements (i.e., elements spanning inner ideals of L) over a field of characteristic distinct from 2. We prove that any Lie algebra generated by a finite number of extremal elements is finite dimensional. The minimal number of extremal generators for the Lie algebras of type An, Bn (n>2), Cn (n>1), Dn (n>3), En (n=6,7,8), F4 and G2 are shown to be n+1, n+1, 2n, n, 5, 5, and 4 in the respective cases. These results are related to group theoretic ones for the corresponding Chevalley groups.
A nonzero element $x$ in a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with Lie product $[ , ]$ is called extremal if $[x,[x,y]]$ is a multiple of $x$ for all $y$. In this paper we characterize the (finitary) symplectic Lie algebras as simple Lie algebras generated by their extremal elements satisying the condition that any two noncommuting extremal elements $x,y$ generate an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and any third extremal element $z$ commutes with at least one extremal element in this $\mathfrak{sl}_2$.
For any finite graph Gamma and any field K of characteristic unequal to 2 we construct an algebraic variety X over K whose K-points parameterise K-Lie algebras generated by extremal elements, corresponding to the vertices of the graph, with prescribed commutation relations, corresponding to the non-edges. After that, we study the case where Gamma is a connected, simply laced Dynkin diagram of finite or affine type. We prove that X is then an affine space, and that all points in an open dense subset of X parameterise Lie algebras isomorphic to a single fixed Lie algebra. If Gamma is of affine t…
A brief review of the extremal projectors for contragredient Lie (super)symmetries (finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras, basic classical Lie superalgebras, infinite-dimensional affine Kac-Moody algebras and superalgebras, as well as their quantum $q$-analogs) is given. Some bibliographic comments on the applications of extremal projectors are presented.
An extremal element $x$ in a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is an element for which the space $[x, [x, \mathfrak{g}]]$ is contained in the linear span of $x$. Long root elements in classical Lie algebras are examples of extremal elements. Lie algebras generated by extremal elements lead to geometries with as points the $1$-spaces generate by extremal elements an as lines the $2$-spaces whose non-zero elements are pairwise commuting extremal elements. In this paper we show that the finitary special linear Lie algebras can be characterized by their extremal geometry. Moreover, we also show that the …
We give an overview of some properties of Lie algebras generated by at most 5 extremal elements. In particular, for any finite graph Γ and any field K of characteristic not 2, we consider an algebraic variety X over K whose K-points parametrize Lie algebras generated by extremal elements. Here the generators correspond to the vertices of the graph, and we prescribe commutation relations corresponding to the nonedges of Γ. We show that, for all connected undirected finite graphs on at most 5 vertices, X is a finite-dimensional affine space. Furthermore, we show that for maximal-dimensional Lie …
A nonzero element x in a Lie algebra g over a field F with Lie product [ , ] is called a extremal element if [x, [x, g]] is contained in Fx. Long root elements in classical Lie algebras are examples of extremal elements. Arjeh Cohen et al. initiated the investigation of Lie algebras generated by extremal elements in order to provide a geometric characterization of the classical Lie algebras generated by their long root el- ements. He and Gabor Ivanyos studied the so-called extremal geometry with as points the 1-dimensional subspaces of g generated by extremal elements of g and as lines the 2-d…
The long-root elements in Lie algebras of Chevalley type have been well studied and can be characterized as extremal elements, that is, elements $x$ such that the image of $(\ad x)^2$ lies in the subspace spanned by $x$. In this paper, assuming an algebraically closed base field of characteristic not 2, we find presentations of the Lie algebras of classical Chevalley type by means of minimal sets of extremal generators. The relations are described by simple graphs on the sets. For example, for $C_n$ the graph is a path of length $2n$, and for $A_n$ the graph is the triangle connected to a path…
An element $x$ of a Lie algebra $L$ over the field $F$ is extremal if $[x,[x,L]]=Fx$. Under minor assumptions, it is known that, for a simple Lie algebra $L$, the extremal geometry ${\cal{E}}(L)$ is a subspace of the projective geometry of $L$ and either has no lines or is the root shadow space of an irreducible spherical building $Δ$. We prove that if $Δ$ is of simply-laced type, then $L$ is a quotient of a Chevalley algebra of the same type.
Let L be a simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra of characteristic distinct from 2 and from 3. Suppose that L contains an extremal element that is not a sandwich, that is, an element x such that [x, [x, L]] is equal to the linear span of x in L. In this paper we prove that, with a single exception, L is generated by extremal elements. The result is known, at least for most characteristics, but the proofs in the literature are involved. The current proof closes a gap in a geometric proof that every simple Lie algebra containing no sandwiches (that is, ad-nilpotent elements of order 2) is in fac…
Max cones are max-algebraic analogs of convex cones. In the present paper we develop a theory of generating sets and extremals of max cones in ${\mathbb R}_+^n$. This theory is based on the observation that extremals are minimal elements of max cones under suitable scalings of vectors. We give new proofs of existing results suitably generalizing, restating and refining them. Of these, it is important that any set of generators may be partitioned into the set of extremals and the set of redundant elements. We include results on properties of open and closed cones, on properties of totally depen…
We study the smallest, as well as the largest numbers of congruences of lattices of an arbitrary finite cardinality $n$. Continuing the work of Freese and Cz\' edli, we prove that the third, fourth and fifth largest numbers of congruences of an $n$--element lattice are: $5\cdot 2^{n-5}$ if $n\geq 5$, respectively $2^{n-3}$ and $7\cdot 2^{n-6}$ if $n\geq 6$. We also determine the structures of the $n$--element lattices having $5\cdot 2^{n-5}$, respectively $2^{n-3}$ congruences, along with the structures of their congruence lattices.
Given an ideal of forms in an algebra (polynomial ring, tensor algebra, exterior algebra, Lie algebra, bigraded polynomial ring), we consider the Hilbert series of the factor ring. We concentrate on the minimal Hilbert series, which is achieved when the forms are generic. In the polynomial ring we also consider the opposite case of maximal series. This is mainly a survey article, but we give a lot of problems and conjectures. The only novel results concern the maximal series in the polynomial ring.
In this paper solvable Leibniz algebras with naturally graded non-Lie $p$-filiform $(n-p\geq4)$ nilradical and with one-dimensional complemented space of nilradical are described. Moreover, solvable Leibniz algebras with abelian nilradical and extremal (minimal, maximal) dimensions of complemented space nilradical are studied. The rigidity of solvable Leibniz algebras with abelian nilradical and maximal dimension of its complemented space is proved.
We construct large families of characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras by considering deformations of the Lie algebra g_{m,m-1}^{4} of type Q_{n},and which arises as a central extension fo the filiform Lie algebra L_{n}. By studying the graded cohomology spaces we obtain that the sill algebras are isomorphic to the nilradicals of solvable, complete Lie algebra laws. For extremal cocycles these laws are also rigid. Considering supplementary cocycles we construcy, for dimensions n>8, nonfiliform characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras and show that for certain deformations these are compatib…
Let $\mathcal{T}$ be a triangular algebra over a commutative ring $\mathcal{R}$ and $φ: \mathcal{T} \times \mathcal{T}\longrightarrow \mathcal{T}$ be an arbitrary Lie biderivation of $\mathcal{T}$. We will address the question of describing the form of $φ$ in the current work. It is shown that under certain mild assumptions, $φ$ is the sum of an inner biderivation and an extremal biderivation and a some central bilinear mapping. Our results is immediately applied to block upper triangular algebras and Hilbert space nest algebras .
In this paper, we mainly study some properties of elementary n-Lie algebras, and prove some necessary and sufficient conditions for elementary n-Lie algebras, we also give the relations between elementary n-algebras and E-algebras.
Let L be a restricted Lie algebra over a field of characteristic p > 2 and denote by u(L) its restricted enveloping algebra. We determine the conditions under which the set of symmetric elements of u(L) with respect to the principal involution is Lie solvable, Lie nilpotent, or bounded Lie Engel.
Let $L$ be a restricted Lie algebra over a field of characteristic $p>2$ and denote by $u(L)$ its restricted enveloping algebra. We establish when the symmetric or skew elements of $u(L)$ under the principal involution are Lie metabelian.
In this paper, the notion of a uniformly distributed systems of elements on the variety of metabelian Lie algebras is introduced. This notion is analogous to one of a measure preserving systems of elements on group varieties. As the main result of the paper it was shown that on the variety of metabelian Lie algebras a system of elements is primitive iff it is uniformly distributed.
We construct the universal enveloping algebra of a Hom-Lie algebra and endow it with a Hom-Hopf algebra structure. We discuss group-like elements that we see as a Hom-group integrating the initial Hom-Lie algebra.
