To any compact hyperbolic Riemann surface $X$, we associate a new type of automorphism group -- called its *commensurability automorphism group*, $ComAut(X)$. The members of $ComAut(X)$ arise from closed circuits, starting and ending at $X$, where the edges represent holomorphic covering maps amongst compact connected Riemann surfaces (and the vertices represent the covering surfaces). This group turns out to be the isotropy subgroup, at the point represented by $X$ (in $T_{\infty}$), for the action of the universal commensurability modular group on the universal direct limit of Teichmüller spaces, $T_{\infty}$.
Now, each point of $T_{\infty}$ represents a complex structure on the universal hyperbolic solenoid. We notice that $ComAut(X)$ acts by holomorphic automorphisms on that complex solenoid. Interestingly, this action turns out to be ergodic (with respect to the natural measure on the solenoid) if and only if the Fuchsian group uniformizing $X$ is *arithmetic*. Furthermore, the action of the commensurability modular group, and of its isotropy subgroups, on some natural vector bundles over $T_{\infty}$, are studied by us.
There exists on each Teichmüller space $T_g$ (comprising compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$), a natural sequence of determinant (of cohomology) line bundles, $DET_n$, related to each other via certain ``Mumford isomorphisms''. There is a remarkable connection, (Belavin-Knizhnik), between the Mumford isomorphisms and the existence of the Polyakov string measure on the Teichmüller space. This suggests the question of finding a genus-independent formulation of these bundles and their isomorphisms. In this paper we combine a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch lemma with a new concept of $C^{*} \otimes Q…
We define an adelic version of a CM elliptic curve $E$ which is equipped with an action of the profinite completion of the endomorphism ring of $E$. The adelic elliptic curve so obtained is provided with a natural embedding into the adelic Heisenberg group. We embed into the adelic Heisenberg group the set of commensurability classes of arithmetic $1$-dimensional $\mathbb{K}$-lattices (here and subsequently, $\mathbb{K}$ denotes a quadratic imaginary number field) and define theta functions on it. We also embed the groupoid of commensurability modulo dilations into the union of adelic Heisenbe…
In this paper we determine all finite groups G that can act on some compact Riemann surface M with the property that if H is any non-trivial subgroup of G, then the orbit surface M/H is the Riemann sphere. The idea is to look at the induced action on the vector space of holomorphic differentials on M (in the positive genus case) and then use the old-known (Wolf) classification of groups admitting fixed point-free linear actions. A description of the corresponding group actions is given in terms of Fuchsian representations.
Using the arithmetic Schottky uniformization theory, we show the arithmeticity of $PSL_{2}({\mathbb C})$ Chern-Simons invariant. In terms of this invariant, we give an explicit formula of the Riemann-Roch isomorphism as Zograf-Mcintyre-Takhtajan's infinite product for families of algebraic curves. By this formula, we determine the unknown constant which appears in the holomorphic factorization formula of determinant of Laplacians on Riemann surfaces via the classical Liouville action. As an application, we show the rationality of Ruelle zeta values for Schottky uniformized $3$-manifolds.
Let $ \; G \; $ be a group acting on a compact Riemann surface $ \; {\mathcal X} \; $ and $ \; D \; $ be a $ \; G$-invariant divisor on $\; {\mathcal X}. \; $ The action of $ \; G \; $ on $ \; {\mathcal X} \; $ induces a linear representation $ \; L_G(D) \; $ of $ \; G \; $ on the Riemann-Roch space associated to $ \; D.$ In this paper we give some results on the decomposition of $ \; L_G(D) \; $ as sum of complex irreducible representations of $ \; G, \; $ for $ \; D \; $ an effective non-special $\; G$-invariant divisor. In particular, we give explicit formulae for the multiplicity of each c…
We produce for each natural number $n \geq 3$ two 1--parameter families of Riemann surfaces admitting automorphism groups with two cyclic subgroups $H_{1}$ and $H_{2}$ of orden $2^{n}$, that are conjugate in the group of orientation--preserving homeomorphism of the corresponding Riemann surfaces, but not conjugate in the group of conformal automorphisms. This property implies that the subvariety $\mathcal{M}_{g}(H_{1})$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ consisting of the points representing the Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ admitting a group of automorphisms topologically conjugate to $H_{…
In an earlier paper [Acta Mathematica, v. 176, 1996, 145-169, alg-geom/9505024 ] the present authors and Dennis Sullivan constructed the universal direct system of the classical Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces of varying genus. The direct limit, which we called the universal commensurability Teichmüller space, $T_{infty}$, was shown to carry on it a natural action of the universal commensurability mapping class group, $MC_{\infty}$. In this paper we identify an interesting cofinal sub-system corresponding to the tower of finite-sheeted characteristic coverings over any fixed base surfac…
We prove that the number of distinct group actions on compact Riemann surfaces of a fixed genus $σ\geq 2$ is at least quadratic in $σ$. We do this through the introduction of a coarse signature space, the space $\mathcal{K}_σ$ of {\em skeletal signatures} of group actions on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $σ$. We discuss the basic properties of $\mathcal{K}_σ$ and present a full conjectural description.
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with an automorphism of prime order $g+1.$ The main result provides a classification of such surfaces. In addition, we give a description of them as algebraic curves, determine and realise their full automorphism groups and compute their fields of moduli. We also study some aspects of their Jacobian varieties such as isogeny decompositions and complex multiplication. Finally, we determine the period matrix of the Accola-Maclachlan curve of genus four.
Given a faithful action of a finite group G on an algebraic curve X of genus g_X > 1, we give explicit criteria for the induced action of G on the Riemann-Roch space H^0(X,O_X(D)) to be faithful, where D is a G-invariant divisor on X of degree at least 2g_X-2. This leads to a concise answer to the question when the action of G on the space H^0(X, Ω_X^m) of global holomorphic polydifferentials of order m is faithful. If X is hyperelliptic, we furthermore provide an explicit basis of H^0(X, Ω_X^m). Finally, we give applications in deformation theory and in coding theory and we discuss the analog…
We first give an exposition of how the Polyakov path integral for the bosonic string produces a natural mapping class group invariant measure, $d(Poly)$, on the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces of each fixed genus. The description of $d(Poly)$ via the Mumford isomorphisms for determinant bundles over Teichmüller space is also explained. We then report on our recent results with I.Biswas and D.Sullivan, where we succeed in coherently fitting together this Polyakov-Mumford construction over the universal direct limit, $T_\infty$, of all the finite genus Teichmüller spaces. The virtual autom…
A tautological system, introduced in [16][17], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold $X$, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. A geometric formula for the holonomic rank of such a system was conjectured in [4], and was verified for the case of projective homogeneous space under an assumption. In this paper, we prove this conjecture in full generality. By means of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and Fourier transforms, we also generalize the rank formula to an a…
Consider a finite group $G$ acting on a Riemann surface $S$, and the associated branched Galois cover $π_G:S \to Y=S/G$. We introduce the concept of geometric signature for the action of $G$, and we show that it captures the information of the geometric structure of the lattice of intermediate covers, the information about the isotypical decomposition of the rational representation of the group $G$ acting on the Jacobian variety $JS$ of $S$, and the dimension of the subvarieties of the isogeny decomposition of $JS$. We also give a version of Riemann's existence theorem, adjusted to the present…
Let $p \geq 3$ be a prime integer and, for $l \geq 1$, let $G \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{l}$ be a group of conformal automorphisms of some closed Riemann surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$. By the Riemann-Hurwitz formula, either $p \leq g+1$ or $p=2g+1$. If $l=1$ and $p=2g+1$, then $S/G$ is the sphere with exactly three cone points and, if moreover $p \geq 7$, then $G$ is the unique $p$-Sylow subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(S)$. If $l=1$ and $p=g+1$, then $S/G$ is the sphere with exactly four cone points and, if moreover $p \geq 13$, then $G$ is again the unique $p$-Sylow subgroup. The above unique facts perm…
Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. Fix positive integers r and d. Let Q denote the Quot scheme that parametrizes the torsion quotients of {\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X of degree d. This Q is also the moduli space of vortices for the standard action of U(r) on {\mathbb C}^r. The group \text{PGL}(r, {\mathbb C}) acts on Q via the action of $\text{GL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ on ${\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X$. We prove that this subgroup $\text{PGL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ is the connected component, containing the identity element, of the holomorphic automorphism group Aut(\mathcal Q)…
We investigate the action of the automorphism group of a closed Riemann surface on its set of theta characteristics (or spin structures). We give criteria for when an automorphism fixes all spin structures, or when it fixes just one. The case of hyperelliptic curves and of the Klein quartic are discussed in detail.
