A theorem of Mina evaluates the determinant of a matrix with entries $D^j(f(x)^i)$. We note the important special case where the matrix entries are evaluated at $x=0$ and give a simple proof of it, and some applications. We then give a short proof of the general case.
We present a variation and generalization of a determinant evaluation of Wilf (math.CO/9809120). His result concerns a matrix whose entries are the coefficients of powers of a given power series; we replace the powers by repeated compositions and obtain similar results.
We give an elementary combinatorial proof of Bass's determinant formula for the zeta function of a finite regular graph. This is done by expressing the number of non-backtracking cycles of a given length in terms of Chebychev polynomials in the eigenvalues of the adjacency operator of the graph.
In 1998, Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen established that the Hankel determinants associated with the Thue--Morse sequence on $\{-1, 1\}$ are always nonzero. Their proof depends on a set of sixteen recurrence relations. We present an alternative, purely combinatorial proof of the same result. We also re-prove a recent result of Coons on the non-vanishing of the Hankel determinants associated to two other classical integer sequences.
We prove that $\det A\leq 6^\frac{n}{6}$ whenever $A\in\{0,1\}^{n\times n}$ contains at most $2n$ ones. We also prove an upper bound on the determinant of matrices with the $k$-consecutive ones property, a generalisation of the consecutive ones property, where each row is allowed to have up to $k$ blocks of ones. Finally, we prove an upper bound on the determinant of a path-edge incidence matrix in a tree and use that to bound the leaf rank of a graph in terms of its order.
In this paper, we compute asymptotics for the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of $d$-dimensional orthotope square lattices as the number of vertices in each dimension grows at the same rate. It is related to the number of spanning trees by the well-known matrix tree theorem. Asymptotics for $2$ and $3$ component rooted spanning forests in these graphs are also derived. Moreover, we express the number of spanning trees in a $2$-dimensional square lattice in terms of the one in a $2$-dimensional discrete torus and also in the quartered Aztec diamond. As a consequence, we…
In this article we provide with combinatorial proofs of some recent identities due to Sury and McLaughlin. We show that, the solution of a general linear recurrence with constant coefficients can be interpreted as a determinant of a matrix. Also, we derive a determinantal expression of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We prove Binets formula for Fibonacci and Lucas numbers in a purely combinatorial way and in course of doing so, we find a determinantal identity, which we think to be new.
We characterize genus g canonical curves by the vanishing of combinatorial products of g+1 determinants of Brill-Noether matrices. This also implies the characterization of canonical curves in terms of (g-2)(g-3)/2 theta identities. A remarkable mechanism, based on a basis of H^0(K_C) expressed in terms of Szego kernels, reduces such identities to a simple rank condition for matrices whose entries are logarithmic derivatives of theta functions. Such a basis, together with the Fay trisecant identity, also leads to the solution of the question of expressing the determinant of Brill-Noether matri…
In this paper we confirm several conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on Hankel-type determinants for some combinatorial sequences including Franel numbers, Domb numbers and Apéry numbers. For any nonnegative integer $n$, define \begin{gather*}f_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^3,\ D_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{2k}k\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k}, b_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k,\ A_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k^2. \end{gather*} For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$, we show that $6^{-n}|f_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ and $12^{-n}|D_{i+j}|_{0\le i,j\le n}$ are positive odd integers, and $10^{-n}|b_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}…
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding fa…
In this article, we evaluate determinants of block hook matrices, which are block matrices consist of hook matrices. In particular, we deduce that the determinant of a block hook matrix factorizes nicely. In addition we give a combinatorial interpretation of the aforesaid factorization property by counting weighted paths in a suitable weighted digraph.
We consider the matrix ${\frak Z}_P=Z_P+Z_P^t$, where the entries of $Z_P$ are the values of the zeta function of the finite poset $P$. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of ${\frak Z}_P$ and establish a recursive formula for this determinant in the case in which $P$ is a boolean algebra.
The classic Cayley identity states that \det(\partial) (\det X)^s = s(s+1)...(s+n-1) (\det X)^{s-1} where X=(x_{ij}) is an n-by-n matrix of indeterminates and \partial=(\partial/\partial x_{ij}) is the corresponding matrix of partial derivatives. In this paper we present straightforward combinatorial proofs of a variety of Cayley-type identities, both old and new. The most powerful of these proofs employ Grassmann algebra (= exterior algebra) and Grassmann-Berezin integration. Among the new identities proven here are a pair of "diagonal-parametrized" Cayley identities, a pair of "Laplacian-par…
Following Benjamin et al., a matrix with entries being sums of two neighbouring Catalan numbers is considered. Its LU-decomposition is given, by guessing the results and later prove it by computer algebra, with lots of human help. Specializing a parameter, the determinant turns out to be a Fibonacci number with odd index, confirming earlier results, obtained back then by combinatorial methods.
We give a new combinatorial explanation for well-known relations between determinants and traces of matrix powers. Such relations can be used to obtain polynomial-time and poly-logarithmic space algorithms for the determinant. Our new explanation avoids linear-algebraic arguments and instead exploits a classical connection between subgraph and homomorphism counts.
We evaluate four families of determinants of matrices, where the entries are sums or differences of generating functions for paths consisting of up-steps, down-steps and level steps. By specialisation, these determinant evaluations have numerous corollaries. In particular, they cover numerous determinant evaluations of combinatorial numbers - most notably of Catalan, ballot, and of Motzkin numbers - that appeared previously in the literature.
Determinant maximization provides an elegant generalization of problems in many areas, including convex geometry, statistics, machine learning, fair allocation of goods, and network design. In an instance of the determinant maximization problem, we are given a collection of vectors $v_1,\ldots, v_n \in \mathbb{R}^d$, and the goal is to pick a subset $S\subseteq [n]$ of given vectors to maximize the determinant of the matrix $\sum_{i \in S} v_iv_i^\top$, where the picked set of vectors $S$ must satisfy some combinatorial constraint such as cardinality constraint ($|S| \leq k$) or matroid constr…
We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of a matrix as a generating function over Brauer diagrams in two different but related ways. The sign of a permutation associated to its number of inversions in the Leibniz formula for the determinant is replaced by the number of crossings in the Brauer diagram. This interpretation naturally explains why the determinant of an even antisymmetric matrix is the square of a Pfaffian.
We consider a combinatorial Laplace operator on a sequence of discrete graphs which approximates the m-dimensional torus when the discretization parameter tends to infinity. We establish a polyhomogeneous expansion of the resolvent trace for the family of discrete graphs, jointly in the resolvent and the discretization parameter. Based on a result about interchanging regularized limits and regularized integrals, we compare the regularized limit of the log-determinants of the combinatorial Laplacian on the sequence of discrete graphs with the logarithm of the zeta determinant for the Laplace Be…
In this paper, we evaluate determinants of some families of Toeplitz-Hessenberg matrices having tribonacci number entries. These determinant formulas may also be expressed equivalently as identities that involve sums of products of multinomial coefficients and tribonacci numbers. In particular, we establish a connection between the tribonacci and the Fibonacci and Padovan sequences via Toeplitz-Hessenberg determinants. We then obtain, by combinatorial arguments, extensions of our determinant formulas in terms of generalized tribonacci sequences satisfying an r-th order recurrence of a more gen…
Trace diagrams are structured graphs with edges labeled by matrices. Each diagram has an interpretation as a particular multilinear function. We provide a rigorous combinatorial definition of these diagrams using a notion of signed graph coloring, and prove that they may be efficiently represented in terms of matrix minors. Using this viewpoint, we provide new proofs of several standard determinant formulas and a new generalization of the Jacobi determinant theorem.
In this paper, firstly, by a determinant of deformed Pascal's triangle, namely the normalized Hessenberg matrix determinant, to count Dyck paths, we give another combinatorial proof of the theorems which are of Catalan numbers determinant representations and the recurrence formula. Secondly, a determinant of normalized Toeplitz-Hessenberg matrix, whose entries are binomials, arising in power series, we derive new four properties of Pascal's triangle.
In this paper we give combinatorial proofs of some well known identities and obtain some generalizations. We give a visual proof of a result of Chapman and Costas-Santos regarding the determinant of sum of matrices. Also we find a new identity expressing permanent of sum of matrices. Besides, we give a graphical interpretation of Newton-Girard identity.
In this paper we present a combinatorial proof of Selberg's integral formula. We start by giving a bijective proof of a Theorem about the number of topological orders of a certain related directed graph. Selberg's Integral Formula then follows by induction. This solves a problem posed by R. Stanley in 2008. Our proof is based on Andersons analytic proof of the formula. As part of the proof we show a further generalisation of the generalised Vandermonde determinant.
Let A=(a_(ij)) be the generic n by n circulant matrix given by a_(ij)=x_(i+j), with subscripts on x interpreted mod n. Define d(n) (resp. p(n)) to be the number of terms in the determinant (resp. permanent) of A. The function p(n) is well-known and has several combinatorial interpretations. The function d(n), on the other hand, has not been studied previously. We show that when n is a prime power, d(n)=p(n). The proof uses symmetric functions.
We give a combinatorial interpretation of a certain positivity conjecture of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, as stated by P. Aluffi and the author in a previous paper. It translates into a positivity property for a sum of p by p determinants consisting of binomial coefficients, generalizing the classical Theorem of Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot et al. which computes these determinants in terms of non-intersecting lattice paths. We prove this conjecture for p=2,3.
In this paper, we find determinant formulas of several Hessenberg-Toeplitz matrices whose nonzero entries are derived from the small and large Schroder and Fine number sequences. Algebraic proofs of these results can be given which make use of Trudi's formula and the generating function of the associated sequence of determinants. We also provide direct arguments of our results that utilize various counting techniques, among them sign-changing involutions, on combinatorial structures related to classes of lattice paths enumerated by the Schroder and Fine numbers. As a consequence of our results…
For any integer $m\geq 2$ and $r \in \{1,\dots, m\}$, let $f_n^{m,r}$ denote the number of $n$-Dyck paths whose peak's heights are $im+r$ for some integer $i$. We find the generating function of $f_n^{m,r}$ satisfies a simple algebraic functional equation of degree $2$. The $r=m$ case is particularly nice and we give a combinatorial proof. By using the Sulanke and Xin's continued fraction method, we calculate the Hankel determinants for $f_n^{m,r}$. The special case $r=m$ of our result solves a conjecture proposed by Chien, Eu and Fu. We also enriched the class of eventually periodic Hankel de…
Michael Somos conjectured a relation between Hankel determinants whose entries $\frac 1{2n+1}\binom{3n}n$ count ternary trees and the number of certain plane partitions and alternating sign matrices. Tamm evaluated these determinants by showing that the generating function for these entries has a continued fraction that is a special case of Gauss's continued fraction for a quotient of hypergeometric series. We give a systematic application of the continued fraction method to a number of similar Hankel determinants. We also describe a simple method for transforming determinants using the genera…
Cartan matrices are of fundamental importance in representation theory. For algebras defined by quivers (i.e. directed graphs) with relations the computation of the entries of the Cartan matrix amounts to counting nonzero paths in the quivers, leading naturally to a combinatorial setting. In this paper we study a refined version, so-called q-Cartan matrices, where each nonzero path is weighted by a power of an indeterminant q according to its length. Specializing q=1 gives the classical Cartan matrix. Our main motivation are derived module categories and their invariants: the invariant factors…
Given an abstract simplicial complex G, the connection graph G' of G has as vertex set the faces of the complex and connects two if they intersect. If A is the adjacency matrix of that connection graph, we prove that the Fredholm characteristic det(1+A) takes values in {-1,1} and is equal to the Fermi characteristic, which is the product of the w(x), where w(x)=(-1)^dim(x). The Fredholm characteristic is a special value of the Bowen-Lanford zeta function and has various combinatorial interpretations. The unimodularity theorem proven here shows that it is a cousin of the Euler characteristic as…
This is a detailed survey -- with rigorous and self-contained proofs -- of some of the basics of elementary combinatorics and algebra, including the properties of finite sums, binomial coefficients, permutations and determinants. It is entirely expository (and written to a large extent as a repository for folklore proofs); no new results (and few, if any, new proofs) appear.
In this article, we use Lindström Gessel Viennot Lemma to give a short, combinatorial, visualizable proof of the identity of Schur polynomials -- the sum of monomials of Young tableaux equals to the quotient of determinants. As a by-product, we have a proof of Vandermonde determinant without words. We also prove the cauchy identity. In the remarks, we discuss factorial Schur polynomials, dual Cauchy identity and the relation beteen Newton interpolation formula.
Varchenko defined the Varchenko matrix associated to any real hyperplane arrangement and computed its determinant. In this paper, we show that the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement has a diagonal form if and only if it is semigeneral, i.e., without degeneracy. In the case of semigeneral arrangement, we present an explicit computation of the diagonal form via combinatorial arguments and matrix operations, thus giving a combinatorial interpretation of the diagonal entries.
We study integer-valued matrices with bounded determinants. Such matrices appear in the theory of integer programs (IP) with bounded determinants. For example, Artmann et al. showed that an IP can be solved in strongly polynomial time if the constraint matrix is bimodular, that is, the determinants are bounded in absolute value by two. Determinants are also used to bound the $\ell_1$-distance between IP solutions and solutions of its linear relaxation. One of the first works to quantify the complexity of IPs with bounded determinants was that of Heller, who identified the maximum number of dif…

Consideration of a question of E. R. Berlekamp led Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville to give a combinatorial interpretation of the entries of certain matrices of determinant~1 in terms of lattice paths. Here we generalize this result by refining the matrix entries to be multivariate polynomials, and by determining not only the determinant but also the Smith normal form of these matrices. A priori the Smith form need not exist but its existence follows from the explicit computation. It will be more convenient for us to state our results in terms of partitions rather than lattice paths.
We introduce and study several combinatorial properties of a class of symmetric polynomials from the point of view of integrable vertex models in finite lattice. We introduce the $L$-operator related with the $U_q(sl_2)$ $R$-matrix, and construct the wavefunctions and their duals. We prove the exact correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials which is a quantum group deformation of the Grothendieck polynomials. This is proved by combining the matrix product method and an analysis on the domain wall boundary partition functions. As applications of the correspondence betwe…
We propose an (essentially combinatorial) approach to the correlation functions of the domain wall six vertex model. We reproduce the boundary 1-point function determinant expression of Bogoliubov, Pronko and Zvonarev, then use that as a building block to obtain analogous expressions for boundary 2-point functions. The latter can be used, at least in principle, to express more general boundary (and bulk) correlation functions as sums over (products of) determinants.
This is a detailed version of the paper math.FA/0212273. The main motivation for this work was to find an explicit formula for a "Szego-regularized" determinant of a zeroth order pseudodifferential operator (PsDO) on a Zoll manifold. The idea of the Szego-regularization was suggested by V. Guillemin and K. Okikiolu. They have computed the second term in a Szego type expansion on a Zoll manifold of an arbitrary dimension. In the present work we compute the third asymptotic term in any dimension. In the case of dimension 2, our formula gives the above mentioned expression for the Szego-redulariz…
