It is proved that the associative differential graded algebra of (polynomial) polyvector fields on a vector space (may be infinite- dimensional) is quasi-isomorphic to the corresponding cohomological Hochschild complex of (polynomial) functions on this vector space as an associative differential graded algebra. This result is an $A_\infty$-version of the Formality conjecture of Maxim Kontsevich [K].
We conjecture an explicit formula for a cyclic analog of the Formality $L_{\infty}$-morphism [K]. We prove that its first Taylor component, the cyclic Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg map, is in fact a morphism (and a quasiisomorphism) of the complexes. To prove it we construct a cohomological version of the Connes-Tsygan bicomplex in cyclic homology. As an application of the cyclic Formality conjecture, we obtain an explicit formula for cyclically invariant deformation quantization. We show that (a more precise version of) the Connes-Flato-Sternheimer conjecture [CFS] on the existence of closed st…
We prove a conjecture raised by Tsygan, namely the existence of an L-infinity-quasiisomorphism of L-infinity-modules between the cyclic chain complex of smooth functions on a manifold and the differential forms on that manifold. Concretely, we prove that the obvious u-linear extension of Shoikhet's morphism of Hochschild chains solves Tsygan's conjecture.
In this short note we describe an alternative global version of the twisting procedure used by Dolgushev to prove formality theorems. This allows us to describe the maps of Fedosov resolutions, which are key factors of the formality morphisms, in terms of a twist of the fiberwise quasi-isomorphisms induced by the local formality theorems proved by Kontsevich and Shoikhet. The key point consists in considering $L_\infty$-resolutions of the Fedosov resolutions obtained by Dolgushev and an adapted notion of Maurer-Cartan element. This allows us to perform the twisting of the quasi-isomorphism int…
In this paper we prove that the sheaf of $\Lscr$-poly-differential operators for a locally free Lie algebroid $\Lscr$ is formal when viewed as a sheaf of $G_\infty$-algebras via Tamarkin's morphism of DG-operads $G_\infty\r B_\infty$. In an appendix we prove a strengthening of Halbout's globalization result for Tamarkin's local quasi-isomorphism.
We settle several questions about the theory of universal deformation quantization of Lie bialgebras by giving their complete classification up to homotopy equivalence. An important new technical ingredient introduced in this paper is an endofunctor D in the category of augmented props with the property that for any representation of a prop P in a vector space V the associated prop DP admits an induced representation on the graded commutative tensor algebra S(V) given in terms of polydifferential operators. Applying this functor to the prop LieB of Lie bialgebras we show that universal formali…
Let $(g,δ_\hbar)$ be a Lie bialgebra. Let $(U_\hbar(g),Δ_\hbar)$ a quantization of $(g,δ_\hbar)$ through Etingof-Kazhdan functor. We prove the existence of a $L_\infty$-morphism between the Lie algebra $C(\g)=Λ(g)$ and the tensor algebra $TU=T(U_\hbar(g)[-1])$ with Lie algebra structure given by the Gerstenhaber bracket. When $(g,δ_\hbar,r)$ is a coboundary Lie bialgebra, we deduce from the formality morphism the existence of a quantization $R$ of $r$.
Boris Shoikhet noticed that the proof of lemma 1 in section 2.3 of math.QA/0504420 contains an error. In this note I give a correct proof of this lemma which was suggested to me by Dmitry Tamarkin. The correction does not change the results of math.QA/0504420.
Proofs of Tsygan's formality conjectures for chains would unlock important algebraic tools which might lead to new generalizations of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem and the Riemann-Roch-Hirzebruch theorem. Despite this pivotal role in the traditional investigations and the efforts of various people the most general version of Tsygan's formality conjecture has not yet been proven. In my thesis I propose Fedosov resolutions for the Hochschild cohomological and homological complexes of the algebra of functions on an arbitrary smooth manifold. Using these resolutions together with Kontsevi…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a curved $L_\infty$-algebra endowed with a complete filtration $\mathfrak{F}\mathfrak{g}$. Suppose there exists an integer $r \in \mathbb{N}_0$ for which the curvature $μ_0$ satisfies $μ_0 \in \mathfrak{F}_{2r+1} \mathfrak{g}$ and the spectral sequence yields $E_{r+1}^{p,q} =0$ for $p,q$ with $p+q=2$. We prove that then a Maurer-Cartan element exists. In addition, we show, as a typical application, that for $P$ a possibly inhomogeneous Koszul operad with generating set in arities 1,2 (e.g. $P$=Com,As,BV,Lie,Ger), a $P_\infty$-algebra $A$ is intrinsically formal if its twi…
We extend the Kontsevich formality $L_\infty$-morphism $\U\colon T^\ndot_\poly(\R^d)\to\D^\ndot_\poly(\R^d)$ to an $L_\infty$-morphism of an $L_\infty$-modules over $T^\ndot_\poly(\R^d)$, $\hat \U\colon C_\ndot(A,A)\toΩ^\ndot(\R^d)$, $A=C^\infty(\R^d)$. The construction of the map $\hat \U$ is given in Kontsevich-type integrals. The conjecture that such an $L_\infty$-morphism exists is due to Boris Tsygan \cite{Ts}. As an application, we obtain an explicit formula for isomorphism $A_*/[A_*,A_*]\simto A/\{A,A\}$ ($A_*$ is the Kontsevich deformation quantization of the algebra $A$ by a Poisson b…
In this short note we prove an equivariant version of the formality of multidiffirential operators for a proper Lie group action. More precisely, we show that the equivariant Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg quasi-isomorphism between the cohomology of the equivariant multidifferential operators and the complex of equivariant multivector fields extends to an $L_\infty$-quasi-isomorphism. We construct this $L_\infty$-quasi-isomorphism using the $G$-invariant formality constructed by Dolgushev. This result has immediate consequences in deformation quantization, since it allows to obtain a quantum mom…
Let X be a Poisson manifold and C a coisotropic submanifold and let I be the vanishing ideal of C. In this work we want to construct a star product * on X such that I[[lambda]] is a left ideal for *. Thus we obtain a representation of the star product algebra A[[lambda]] = C^\infty(X)[[lambda]] on B[[lambda]] = A[[lambda]] / I[[lambda]] deforming the usual representation of A on the functions on C. The result follows from a generalization of Tamarkin's formality adapted to the submanifold C. We show that in the case X = R^n and C = R^{n-l} with l > 1 there are no obstructions to this formality…
In this paper we prove, with details and in full generality, that the isomorphism induced on tangent homology by the Shoikhet-Tsygan formality $L_\infty$-quasi-isomorphism for Hochschild chains is compatible with cap-products. This is a homological analog of the compatibility with cup-products of the isomorphism induced on tangent cohomology by Kontsevich formality $L_\infty$-quasi-isomorphism for Hochschild cochains. As in the cohomological situation our proof relies on a homotopy argument involving a variant of {\bf Kontsevich eye}. In particular we clarify the rôle played by the {\bf I-cube…
We recover some recent results by Dotsenko, Shadrin and Vallette on the Deligne groupoid of a pre-Lie algebra, showing that they follow naturally by a pre-Lie variant of the PBW Theorem. As an application, we show that Kapranov's $L_\infty$ algebra structure on the Dolbeault complex of a Kähler manifold is homotopy abelian and independent on the choice of Kähler metric up to an $L_\infty$ isomorphism, by making the trivializing homotopy and the $L_\infty$ isomorphism explicit.
We prove the 0-(co)homology part of the conjecture on the cup-products on tangent cohomology in the Tsygan formality [Sh2]. We discuss its applications to the Duflo formula.
We prove the statement/conjecture of M. Kontsevich on the existence of the logarithmic formality morphism. This question was open since 1999, and the main obstacle was the presence of $dr/r$ type singularities near the boundary $r=0$ in the integrals over compactified configuration spaces. The novelty of our approach is the use of local torus actions on configuration spaces of points in the upper half-plane. It gives rise to a version of Stokes' formula for differential forms with singularities at the boundary which implies the formality property. We also show that the logarithmic formality mo…
We prove Tsygan's formality conjecture for Hochschild chains of the algebra of functions on an arbitrary smooth manifold M using the Fedosov resolutions proposed in math.QA/0307212 and the formality quasi-isomorphism for Hochschild chains of R[[y_1, ..., y_d]] proposed in paper math.QA/0010321 by Shoikhet. This result allows us to describe traces on the quantum algebra of functions on an arbitrary Poisson manifold.
The Kontsevich-Soibelman solution of the cyclic version of Deligne's conjecture and the formality of the operad of little discs on a cylinder provide us with a natural homotopy calculus structure on the pair (C^*(A), C_*(A)) ``Hochschild cochains + Hochschild chains'' of an associative algebra A. We show that for an arbitrary smooth algebraic variety X with the structure sheaf O_X the sheaf (C^*(O_X), C_*(O_X)) of homotopy calculi is formal. This result was announced in paper [29] by the second and the third author.
A first goal of this paper is to precisely relate the homotopy theories of bialgebras and $E_2$-algebras. For this, we construct a conservative and fully faithful $\infty$-functor from pointed conilpotent homotopy bialgebras to augmented $E_2$-algebras which consists in an appropriate "cobar" construction. Then we prove that the (derived) formal moduli problem of homotopy bialgebras structures on a bialgebra is equivalent to the (derived) formal moduli problem of $E_2$-algebra structures on this "cobar" construction. We show consequently that the $E_3$-algebra structure on the higher Hochschil…
The global formality of Dolgushev depends on the choice of a torsion-free covariant derivative. We prove that the globalized formalities with respect to two different covariant derivatives are homotopic. More explicitly, we derive the statement by proving a more general homotopy equivalence between $L_\infty$-morphisms that are twisted with gauge equivalent Maurer-Cartan elements.
We construct a differential and a Lie bracket on the space\linebreak $\{\Hom (A^{\otimes k}, A^{\otimes l})\},_{k,l\ge 0}$ for any associative algebra $A$. The restriction of this bracket to the space $\{\Hom (A^{\otimes k}, A)\},_{k\ge 0}$ is exactly the Gerstenhaber bracket. We discuss some formality conjecture related with this construction. We also discuss some applications to deformation theory.
It is well-known that the Kontsevich formality [K97] for Hochschild cochains of the polynomial algebra $A=S(V^*)$ fails if the vector space $V$ is infinite-dimensional. In the present paper, we study the corresponding obstructions. We construct an $L_\infty$ structure on polyvector fields on $V$ having the even degree Taylor components, with the degree 2 component given by the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket, but having as well higher non-vanishing Taylor components. We prove that this $L_\infty$ algebra is quasi-isomorphic to the corresponding Hochschild cochain complex. We prove that our $L_\inft…
We give a new computation of Hochschild (co)homology of the exterior algebra, together with algebraic structures, by direct comparison with the symmetric algebra. The Hochschild cohomology is determined to be essentially the algebra of even-weight polyvector fields. From Kontsevich's formality theorem, the differential graded Lie algebra of Hochschild cochains is proved to be formal when the vector space generating the exterior algebra is even dimensional. We conjecture that formality fails in the odd dimensional case, proving this when the dimension is one. In all dimensions, formal deformati…
This paper is dedicated to the memory of Moshe Flato, and will appear in Lett. Math. Phys. 48 (1) It became clear during last 5-6 years that the algebraic world of associative algebras (abelian categories, triangulated categories, etc) has many deep connections with the geometric world of two-dimensional surfaces. One of manifestations of this is Deligne's conjecture (1993) which says that on the cohomological Hochschild complex of any associative algebra naturally acts the operad of singular chains in the little discs operad. Recently D. Tamarkin discovered that the operad of chains of the li…
The deformation theory of a Dirac structure is controlled by a differential graded Lie algebra which depends on the choice of an auxiliary transversal Dirac structure; if the transversal is not involutive, one obtains an $L_\infty$ algebra instead. We develop a simplified method for describing this $L_\infty$ algebra and use it to prove that the $L_\infty$ algebras corresponding to different transversals are canonically $L_\infty$-isomorphic. In some cases, this isomorphism provides a formality map, as we show in several examples including (quasi)-Poisson geometry, Dirac structures on Lie grou…
The solution of Deligne's conjecture on Hochschild cochains and the formality of the operad of little disks provide us with a natural homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the Hochschild cochains of an associative algebra. In this paper we construct a natural chain of quasi-isomorphisms of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras between the Hochschild cochain complex C(A) of a regular commutative algebra A over a field of characteristic zero and the Gerstenhaber algebra of multiderivations of A. Unlike the original approach of the second author based on the computation of obstructions our method a…
The $q$-Onsager algebra $\mathcal O_q$ is defined by two generators $W_0, W_1$ and two relations called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. Recently Baseilhac and Kolb obtained a PBW basis for $\mathcal O_q$ with elements denoted $\lbrace B_{n δ+ α_0} \rbrace_{n=0}^\infty, \lbrace B_{n δ+ α_1} \rbrace_{n=0}^\infty, \lbrace B_{n δ} \rbrace_{n=1}^\infty $. In their recent study of a current algebra $\mathcal A_q$, Baseilhac and Belliard conjecture that there exist elements $\lbrace W_{-k}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty, \lbrace W_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty, \lbrace G_{k+1} \rbrace_{k=0}^\infty, \lbrace {\tilde G…
In our recent paper [Sh1] a version of the "generalized Deligne conjecture" for abelian $n$-fold monoidal categories is proven. For $n=1$ this result says that, given an abelian monoidal $k$-linear category $\mathscr{A}$ with unit $e$, $k$ a field of characteristic 0, the dg vector space $\mathrm{RHom}_{\mathscr{A}}(e,e)$ is the first component of a Leinster 1-monoid in $\mathscr{A}lg(k)$ (provided a rather mild condition on the monoidal and the abelian structures in $\mathscr{A}$, called homotopy compatibility, is fulfilled). In the present paper, we introduce a new concept of a ${\it graded}…
We give a topological solution to the $\Ainf$ Deligne conjecture using associahedra and cyclohedra. For this we construct three CW complexes whose cells are indexed by products of polytopes. Giving new explicit realizations of the polytopes in terms of different types of trees, we are able to show that the CW complexes are cell models for the little discs. The cellular chains of one complex in particular, which is built out of associahedra and cyclohedra, naturally acts on the Hochschild cochains of an $\Ainf$ algebra yielding an explicit, topological and minimal solution to the $\Ainf$ Delign…
First we describe a class of homotopy Frobenius algebras via cyclic operads which we call cyclic $A_\infty$ algebras. We then define a suitable new combinatorial operad which acts on the Hochschild cochains of such an algebra in a manner which encodes the homotopy BV structure. Moreover we show that this operad is equivalent to the cellular chains of a certain topological (quasi)-operad of CW complexes whose constituent spaces form a homotopy associative version of the Cacti operad of Voronov. These cellular chains thus constitute a chain model for the framed little disks operad, proving a cyc…
The vertex algebra W_{1+\infty,c} with central charge c may be defined as a module over the universal central extension of the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle. For an integer n\geq 1, it was conjectured in the physics literature that W_{1+\infty,-n} should have a minimal strong generating set consisting of n^2+2n elements. Using a free field realization of W_{1+\infty,-n} due to Kac-Radul, together with a deformed version of Weyl's first and second fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the standard representation of GL_n, we prove this conjecture. A consequence is th…
