We prove that the image of the mapping class group by the representations arising in the SU(2)-TQFT is infinite, provided that the genus is bigger than 2 and the level r of the theory is different from 2,3,4,6. In particular the quotient of the mapping class group by the normaizer of the r-th power of a Dehn twist is infinite if the genus is at least 3 and r is bigger than 12.
We show that for an odd prime r > 3 and an integer g > 1, in the projective representation given by the SO(3) Witten-Chern-Simons theory at an rth root of unity, the image of the mapping class group of a surface of genus g is dense.
We construct integral bases for the SO(3)-TQFT-modules of surfaces in genus one and two at roots of unity of prime order and show that the corresponding mapping class group representations preserve a unimodular Hermitian form over a ring of algebraic integers. For higher genus surfaces the Hermitian form sometimes must be non-unimodular. In one such case, genus 3 and p=5, we still give an explicit basis.
We find decomposition series of length at most two for modular representations in positive characteristic of mapping class groups of surfaces induced by an integral version of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev SO(3)-TQFT at the p-th root of unity, where p is an odd prime. The dimensions of the irreducible factors are given by Verlinde-type formulas.
Given a mapping class f of an oriented surface Sigma and a lagrangian lambda in the first homology of Sigma, we define an integer n_{lambda}(f). We use n_{lambda}(f) (mod 4) to describe a universal central extension of the mapping class group of Sigma as an index-four subgroup of the extension constructed from the Maslov index of triples of lagrangian subspaces in the homology of the surface. We give two descriptions of this subgroup. One is topological using surgery, the other is homological and builds on work of Turaev and work of Walker. Some applications to TQFT are discussed. They are bas…
We study the TQFT mapping class group representations for surfaces with boundary associated with the $SU(2)$ gauge group, or equivalently the quantum group $U_q(\Sl(2))$. We show that at a prime root of unity, these representations are all irreducible. We also examine braid group representations for transcendental values of the quantum parameter, where we show that the image of every mapping class group is Zariski dense.
For each oriented surface $Σ$ of genus $g$ we study a limit of quantum representations of the mapping class group arising in TQFT derived from the Kauffman bracket. We determine that these representations converge in the Fell topology to the representation of the mapping class group on $\boH(Σ)$, the space of regular functions on the $SL(2,\C)$ representation variety with its hermitian structure coming from the symplectic structure of the SU(2)-representation variety. As a corollary, we give a new proof of the asymptotic faithfulness of quantum representations.
In [arXiv:1912.02063], we constructed 3-dimensional Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) using not necessarily semisimple modular categories. Here, we study projective representations of mapping class groups of surfaces defined by these TQFTs, and we express the action of a set of generators through the algebraic data of the underlying modular category $\mathcal{C}$. This allows us to prove that the projective representations induced from the non-semisimple TQFTs of [arXiv:1912.02063] are equivalent to those obtained by Lyubashenko via generators and relations in [arXiv:hep-th/9405167]. …
We give new explicit formulas for the representations of the mapping class group of a genus one surface with one boundary component which arise from Integral TQFT. Our formulas allow one to compute the h-adic expansion of the TQFT-matrix associated to a mapping class in a straightforward way. Truncating the h-adic expansion gives an approximation of the representation by representations into finite groups. As a special case, we study the induced representations over finite fields and identify them up to isomorphism. The key technical ingredient of the paper are new bases of the Integral TQFT m…
We calculate the knot invariant coming from the Teichmüller TQFT [AK1]. Specifically we calculate the knot invariant for the complement of the knot $6_1$ both in the original [AK1] and the new formulation of the Teichmüller TQFT [AK2] for the one-vertex H-triangulation of $(S^3,6_1)$. We show that the two formulations give equivalent answers. Furthermore we apply a formal stationary phase analysis and arrive at the Andersen- Kashaev volume conjecture as stated in [AK1, Conj. 1]. Furthermore we calculate the first examples of knot complements in the new formulation showing that the new formulat…
We endow a non-semisimple category of modules of unrolled quantum sl(2) with a Hermitian structure. We also prove that the TQFT constructed in arXiv:1202.3553 using this category is Hermitian. This gives rise to projective representations of the mapping class group in the group of indefinite unitary matrices.
With the help of a new program, we do computations concerning the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev representations of mapping class groups. In particular we distinguish some mutant fibered knots. The program can be downloaded from http://www.geometrie.ch/TQFT
In this article we give examples which show that the TQFT representations of the mapping class groups derived from quantum SU(N) for N>2 are generically decomposable. One general decomposition of the representations is induced by the symmetry which exchanges SU(N) representation labels by their conjugates. The respective summands of a given parity are typically still reducible into many further components. Specifically, we give an explicit basis for an irreducible direct summand in the SL(2,Z) representation obtained from quantum PSU(3) when the order of the root of unity is a prime r=2 mod 3.…
We show that the graph TQFT for Heegaard Floer homology satisfies a strong version of Atiyah's duality axiom for a TQFT. As an application, we compute some Heegaard Floer mixed invariants of 4-dimensional mapping tori in terms of Lefschetz numbers on $HF^+$.
In this work, we compute the representation of the mapping class group of the sphere with $4$ punctures arising from the non semi-simple TQFT (constructed by Blanchet--Costantino--Geer--Patureau). We show that it is faithful. Lastly, we compare quantum representations of punctured spheres in general with those of braid groups.
The SU(2) TQFT representation of the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus g, at a root of unity of prime order, is shown to be irreducible. Some examples of reducible representations are also given.
We construct a Topological Quantum Field Theory (in the sense of Atiyah) associated to the universal finite-type invariant of 3-dimensional manifolds, as a functor from the category of 3-dimensional manifolds with parametrized boundary, satisfying some additional conditions, to an algebraic-combinatorial category. It is built together with its truncations with respect to a natural grading, and we prove that these TQFTs are non-degenerate and anomaly-free. The TQFT(s) induce(s) a (series of) representation(s) of a subgroup ${\cal L}_g$ of the Mapping Class Group that contains the Torelli group.…
We use modified traces to renormalize Lyubashenko's closed 3-manifold invariants coming from twist non-degenerate finite unimodular ribbon categories. Our construction produces new topological invariants which we upgrade to 2+1-TQFTs under the additional assumption of factorizability. The resulting functors provide monoidal extensions of Lyubashenko's mapping class group representations, as discussed in arXiv:2010.14852. This general framework encompasses important examples of non-semisimple modular categories coming from the representation theory of quasi-Hopf algebras, which were left out of…
We construct and study a new family of TQFTs based on nilpotent highest weight representations of quantum sl(2) at a root of unity indexed by generic complex numbers. This extends to cobordisms the non-semi-simple invariants defined in (arXiv:1202.3553) including the Kashaev invariant of links. Here the modular category framework does not apply and we use the ``universal construction''. Our TQFT provides a monoidal functor from a category of surfaces and their cobordisms into the category of graded finite dimensional vector spaces and their degree 0-morphisms and depends on the choice of a roo…
For $n$ an even number, we study representations of the mapping class group of the $n$-punctured sphere arising from $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-TQFT when all punctures are colored by the same integer $N \geq 1$. We prove that the conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno holds for the $4$-punctured sphere for all $N \geq 2$. In the case $n \geq 6$ of punctures, we prove it for the pseudo-Anosovs satisfying a homological condition, namely they should act with a non trivial stretching factor on certain eigenspaces of homology of a $\frac{n}{2}$-fold branched cover considered by McMullen. The main idea is t…
We show that unrolled quantum groups at odd roots of unity give rise to relative modular categories. These are the main building blocks for the construction of 1+1+1-TQFTs extending CGP invariants, which are non-semisimple quantum invariants of closed 3-manifolds decorated with ribbon graphs and cohomology classes. When we consider the zero cohomology class, these quantum invariants are shown to coincide with the renormalized Hennings invariants coming from the corresponding small quantum groups.
Motion groups of links in the three sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ are generalizations of the braid groups, which are motion groups of points in the disk $\mathbb{D}^2$. Representations of motion groups can be used to model statistics of extended objects such as closed strings in physics. Each $1$-extended $(3+1)$-topological quantum field theory (TQFT) will provide representations of motion groups, but it is difficult to compute such representations explicitly in general. In this paper, we compute representations of the motion groups of links in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with generalized axes from Dijkgraaf-Witt…
We provide a homological model for a family of quantum representations of mapping class groups arising from non-semisimple TQFTs (Topological Quantum Field Theories). Our approach gives a new geometric point of view on these representations, and it gathers into one theory two of the most promising constructions for investigating linearity of mapping class groups. More precisely, if $\varSigma_{g,1}$ is a surface of genus $g$ with $1$ boundary component, we consider a (crossed) action of its mapping class group $\mathrm{Mod}(\varSigma_{g,1})$ on the homology of its configuration space $\mathrm{…
We show that the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum SU(n)-representations, for any fixed integer $n \geq 2$. In the Pseudo-Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) SU(2)-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.
It has been conjectured that every $(2+1)$-TQFT is a Chern-Simons-Witten (CSW) theory labelled by a pair $(G,λ)$, where $G$ is a compact Lie group, and $λ\in H^4(BG;Z)$ a cohomology class. We study two TQFTs constructed from Jones' subfactor theory which are believed to be counterexamples to this conjecture: one is the quantum double of the even sectors of the $E_6$ subfactor, and the other is the quantum double of the even sectors of the Haagerup subfactor. We cannot prove mathematically that the two TQFTs are indeed counterexamples because CSW TQFTs, while physically defined, are not yet mat…
We construct certain orbifold compactifications of the moduli stack of pointed stable curves over $\mathbb C$ and study their fundamental groups by means of their quantum representations. This enables to construct interesting Kähler groups and to settle most of the candidates for a counter-example to the Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity proposed in 1998 by Bogomolov and Katzarkov, using TQFT representations of the mapping class groups.
We prove a conjecture of Hutchings and Lee relating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold X with b_1 > 0 to an invariant that `counts' gradient flow lines--including closed orbits--of a circle-valued Morse function on the manifold. The proof is based on a method described by Donaldson for computing the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds by making use of a `topological quantum field theory,' which makes the calculation completely explicit. We also realize a version of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of X as the intersection number of a pair of totally real submanifolds of a pr…

In this brief sequel to a previous article, we recall the notion of a cut cellular surface (CCS), being a surface with boundary, which is cut in a specified way to be represented in the plane, and is composed of 0-, 1- and 2-cells. We obtain invariants of CCS's under Pachner-like moves on the cellular structure, by counting colourings of the 1- and 2-cells with elements of a finite 2-group, subject to a "fake flatness" condition for each 2-cell. These invariants, which extend Yetter's invariants to this class of surfaces, are also described in a TQFT setting. A result from the previous article…
The aim of this paper is to survey some known results about mapping class group quotients by powers of Dehn twists, related to their finite dimensional representations and to state some open questions. One can construct finite quotients of them, out of representations with Zariski dense images into semisimple Lie groups. We show that, in genus 2, the Fibonacci TQFT representation is actually a specialization of the Jones representation. Eventually, we explain a method of Long and Moody which provides large families of mapping class group representations.
For $N \geq 2$, we study a certain sequence $(ρ_p^{(c_p)})$ of N-dimensional representations of the mapping class group of the one-holed torus arising from SO(3)-TQFT, and show that the conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum, and Ueno \cite{1} holds for these representations. This is done by proving that, in a certain basis and up to a rescaling, the matrices of these representations converge as $p$ tends to infinity. Moreover, the limits describe the action of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ on the space of homogeneous polynomials of two variables of total degree $N-1$.
Given a TQFT in dimension d+1, and an infinite cyclic covering of a closed (d+1)-dimensional manifold M, we define an invariant taking values in a strong shift equivalence class of matrices. The notion of strong shift equivalence originated in R. Williams' work in symbolic dynamics. The Turaev-Viro module associated to a TQFT and an infinite cyclic covering is then given by the Jordan form of this matrix away from zero. This invariant is also defined if the boundary of M has a circle factor and the infinite cyclic cover of the boundary is standard. We define a variant of a TQFT associated to a…
We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Filed Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging $G$-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group $G$ symmetry. We use the fact that the latter are classified by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space $BG$. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is $G$-equivariant invertible pin$^\pm$-TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their g…
We use quantum invariants to define an analytic family of representations for the mapping class group of a punctured surface. The representations depend on a complex number A with |A| <= 1 and act on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. They are unitary when A is real or imaginary, bounded when |A|<1, and only densely defined when |A| = 1 and A is not a root of unity. When A is a root of unity distinct from 1, -1, i, -i the representations are finite-dimensional and isomorphic to the "Hom" version of the well-known TQFT quantum representations. The unitary representations in the interval [-1…
We produce a sequence of finite dimensional representations of the fundamental group $π_1(S)$ of a closed surface where all simple closed curves act with finite order, but where each non--simple closed curve eventually acts with infinite order. As a consequence, we obtain a representation theoretic algorithm which decides whether or not a given element of $π_1(S)$ is freely homotopic to a simple closed curve. The construction of these representations combines ideas from TQFT representations of mapping class groups with effective versions of LERF for surface groups.
