Using the description of dominions in the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most two, we give a characterization of which groups are absolutely closed in this variety. We use the general result to derive an easier characterization for some subclasses; e.g. an abelian group $G$ is absolutely closed in ${\cal N}_2$ if and only if $G/pG$ is cyclic for every prime $p$.
Let $\mathcal C$ be a class of topological semigroups. A semigroup $X$ is called $absolutely$ $\mathcal C$-$closed$ if for any homomorphism $h:X\to Y$ to a topological semigroup $Y\in\mathcal C$, the image $h[X]$ is closed in $Y$. Let $\mathsf{T_{\!1}S}$, $\mathsf{T_{\!2}S}$, and $\mathsf{T_{\!z}S}$ be the classes of $T_1$, Hausdorff, and Tychonoff zero-dimensional topological semigroups, respectively. We prove that a commutative semigroup $X$ is absolutely $\mathsf{T_{\!z}S}$-closed if and only if $X$ is absolutely $\mathsf{T_{\!2}S}$-closed if and only if $X$ is chain-finite, bounded, group-…
A semigroup $X$ is $absolutely$ (resp. $injectively$) $T_1S$-$closed$ if for any (injective) homomorphism $h:X\to Y$ to a $T_1$ topological semigroup $Y\in\mathcal C$, the image $h[X]$ is closed in $Y$. We prove that a commutative semigroup $X$ is injectively $T_1S$-closed if and only if $X$ is bounded, nonsingular and Clifford-finite. Using this characterization, we prove that (1) every injectively $T_1S$-closed semigroup has injectively $T_1S$-closed center, and (2) every absolutely $T_1S$-closed semigroup has finite center.
We prove that pure braid groups of closed surface are almost-direct products of residually torsion free nilpotent groups and hence residually torsion free nilpotent. As a Corollary, we prove also that braid groups on 2 strands of closed surfaces are residually nilpotent.
For every infinite cardinal $κ$ with $κ^+=2^κ$ we construct a group $G$ of cardinality $|G|=κ^+$ such that (i) $G$ is $36$-Shelah, which means that $A^{36}=G$ for any subset $A\subseteq G$ of cardinality $|A|=|G|$; (ii) $G$ is absolutely $\mathsf{T_{\!1}S}$-closed and projectively $\mathsf{T_{\!1}S}$-discrete, which means that for every homomorphism $h:G\to Y$ to a $T_1$ topological semigroup $Y$ the image $h[G]$ is a closed discrete subspace of $Y$, (iii) $G$ cannot be covered by finitely many algebraic subsets, i.e., subsets of the form $\{x\in G:xc_1xc_2\cdots xc_n=e\}$ for some $c_1,c_2,\c…
We study the strong, weak, and special amalgamation bases in the varieties of nilpotent groups of class two and exponent n, where n is odd. The main result is a characterization of the special amalgamation bases for these varieties. We also characterize the weak and strong bases. For special amalgamation bases, we show that there are groups which are special bases in varieties of finite exponent but not in the variety of all nil-2 groups, whereas for weak and strong bases we show this is not the case. We also show that in these varieties, as well as the variety of all nil-2 groups, a group has…
Here we show that a finite nilpotent group is 2-closed if and only if it is either cyclic or a direct product of a generalized quaternion group with a cyclic group of odd order.
Let G be a free group in a variety of groups, but G is not absolutely free. We prove that the group of automorphisms Aut(G) is linear iff G is a virtually nilpotent group.
We consider the fundamental group $π$ of a surface of finite type equipped with the infinite generating set consisting of all simple closed curves. We show that every nilpotent quotient of $π$ has finite diameter with respect to the word metric given by this set. This is in contrast with a result of Danny Calegari that shows that $π$ has infinite diameter with respect to this set. Furthermore, we give a general criterion for a finitely generated group equipped with a generating set to have this property.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $p$ a fixed prime divisor of $|G|$. Combining the nilpotence, the normality and the order of groups together, we prove that if every maximal subgroup of $G$ is nilpotent or normal or has $p'$-order, then (1) $G$ is solvable; (2) $G$ has a Sylow tower; (3) There exists at most one prime divisor $q$ of $|G|$ such that $G$ is neither $q$-nilpotent nor $q$-closed, where $q\neq p$.
It is well known that when $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed surface of negative Euler characteristic, it has the $R_{\infty}$ property. In this work we compute the least integer $c$, {\it called the $R_{\infty}$-nilpotency degree of $G$}, such that the group $G/ γ_{c+1}(G)$ has the $R_{\infty}$ property, where $γ_r(G)$ is the $r$-th term of the lower central series of $G$. We show that $c=4$ for $G$ the fundamental group of any orientable closed surface $S_g$ of genus $g>1$. For the fundamental group of the non-orientable surface $N_g$ (the connected sum of $g$ projective planes) this …
A dessin is an embedding of connected bipartite graph into an oriented closed surface. A dessin is regular if its group of colour- and orientation-preserving automorphisms acts transitively on the edges. In the present paper regular dessins with a nilpotent automorphism group are investigated, and attention are paid on those with the highest level of external symmetry. Depending on the algebraic theory of dessins and using group-theoretical methods, we present a classification of nilpotent groups of class two which underly a unique regular dessin.
A virtual endomorphism of a group G is a homomorphism f from H into G where H is a subgroup of G of finite index m. The triple (G,H,f) produces a state-closed (or, self-similar) representation t of G on the 1-rooted m-ary tree. This paper is a study of properties of the image G^t when G is nilpotent. In particular, it is shown that if G is finitely generated, torsion-free and nilpotent then G^t has solvability degree bounded above by the number of prime divisors of m.
Let $H$ be a linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that any "exponential map" for $H$ induces a bijection between the variety of $r$-tuples of commuting $[p]$-nilpotent elements in $Lie(H)$ and the variety of height $r$ infinitesimal one-parameter subgroups of $H$. In particular, we show that for a connected reductive group $G$ in pretty good characteristic, there is a canonical exponential map for $G$ and hence a canonical bijection between the aforementioned varieties, answering in this case questions raised both implicitly and explicitly…
Let $k$ be any positive integer and $G$ a compact (Hausdorff) group. Let $\mf{np}_k(G)$ denote the probability that $k+1$ randomly chosen elements $x_1,\dots,x_{k+1}$ satisfy $[x_1,x_2,\dots,x_{k+1}]=1$. We study the following problem: If $\mf{np}_k(G)>0$ then, does there exist an open nilpotent subgroup of class at most $k$? The answer is positive for profinite groups and we give a new proof. We also prove that the connected component $G^0$ of $G$ is abelian and there exists a closed normal nilpotent subgroup $N$ of class at most $k$ such that $G^0N$ is open in $G$.
We determine the largest α for which the nilpotent group of 4-by-4 triangular matrices with integer coefficients and 1 in the diagonal embeds into the group of C1+α diffeomorphism of the closed interval.
We study the closures of subgroups, semilattices and different kinds of semigroup extensions in semitopological inverse semigroups with continuous inversion. In particularly we show that a topological group $G$ is $H$-closed in the class of semitopological inverse semigroups with continuous inversion if and only if $G$ is compact, a Hausdorff linearly ordered topological semilattice $E$ is $H$-closed in the class of semitopological semilattices if and only if $E$ is $H$-closed in the class of topological semilattices, and a topological Brandt $λ^0$-extension of $S$ is (absolutely) $H$-closed i…
Let G be a reductive group acting on an affine variety X, let x in X be a point whose G-orbit is not closed, and let S be a G-stable closed subvariety of X which meets the closure of the G-orbit of x but does not contain x. In this paper, we study G.R. Kempf's optimal class Omega_G(x,S) of cocharacters of G attached to the point x; in particular, we consider how this optimality transfers to subgroups of G. Suppose K is a G-completely reducible subgroup of G which fixes x, and let H = C_G(K)^0. Our main result says that the H-orbit of x is also not closed, and the optimal class Omega_H(x,S) for…
Let $N$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$. For a faithful $N$-set $Δ$, applying the university embedding theorem one can construct a faithful $G$-set $Ω$. In this short note, it is proved that if the $2$-closure of $N$ in $Ω$ is equal to $N$, then the $2$-closure of $N$ in $Δ$ is also equal to $N$; in addition, it is proved that any abelian normal subgroup of a finite totally $2$-closed group is cyclic; finally, it is proved that if a finite nilpotent group is a direct of two nilpotent subgroups where the two factors have coprime orders and both of them are totally 2-closed then G is …
We exhibit an extension of the category of class two nilpotent groups. It has the same objects but, unlike the latter, its morphisms are closed under pointwise addition of maps. At the same time the class of its morphisms is much smaller than the class of all maps. In fact, the morphisms are quadratic maps of very special kind. It is indicated that classification of various class two nilpotent groups up to isomorphism in this larger category can give interesting results.
We show that relative Property (T) for the abelianization of a nilpotent normal subgroup implies relative Property (T) for the subgroup itself. This and other results are a consequence of a theorem of independent interest, which states that if $H$ is a closed subgroup of a locally compact group $G$, and $A$ is a closed subgroup of the center of $H$, such that $A$ is normal in $G$, and $(G/A, H/A)$ has relative Property (T), then $(G, H^{(1)})$ has relative Property (T), where $H^{(1)}$ is the closure of the commutator subgroup of $H$. In fact, the assumption that $A$ is in the center of $H$ ca…
Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Assume that p is good for G. In this note we consider particular classes of connected reductive subgroups H of G and show that the cocharacters of H that are associated to a given nilpotent element e in the Lie algebra of H are precisely the cocharacters of G associated to e that take values in H. In particular, we show that this is the case provided H is a connected reductive subgroup of G of maximal rank; this answers a question posed by J.C. Jantzen.
To define the notion of a generic property of finite dimensional 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras we use standard correspondence between such Lie algebras and points of an appropriate algebraic variety, where a negligible set is one contained in a proper Zariski-closed subset. We compute the maximal dimension of an abelian subalgebra of a generic Lie algebra and give a sufficient condition for a generic Lie algebra to admit no surjective homomorphism onto a non-abelian Lie algebra of a given dimension. Also we consider analogous questions for finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups of cl…
According to the classical Plante-Thurston Theorem, all nilpotent groups of $C^2$-diffeomorphisms of the closed interval are Abelian. Using techniques coming from the works of Denjoy and Pixton, Farb and Franks constructed a faithful action by $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of $[0,1]$ for every finitely-generated, torsion-free, non-Abelian nilpotent group. In this work, we give a version of this construction that is sharp in what concerns the Hölder regularity of the derivatives. Half of the proof relies on results on random paths on Heisenberg-like groups that are interesting by themselves.
We extend Leth's notion of subsets of the integers satisfying the Standard interval measure (SIM) property to the class of virtually nilpotent groups and name the corresponding property the Standard ball measure (SBM) property. In order to do this, we define a natural measure on closed balls in asymptotic cones associated to such groups and show that this measure satisfies the Lebesgue density theorem. We then prove analogs of various properties known to hold for SIM sets in this broader context, occasionally assuming extra properties of the group, such as the small spheres property and the sm…
